The adventure continues - Brenner is not a werewolf…

He is the result of a secret US Army experiment. The creation of a government controlled Super Soldier.

And no one asked if he wanted to take part.

So, he escaped. And for the last fifty years has been living in the backroads and the small unknown towns of America. Never aging. Searching for a cure. At the same time avoiding the dark ops experts who are looking for him.

But just because he can become a seven foot, four hundred pound killing machine, it doesn’t mean that Brenner is bad. In fact, he sticks to a strict code.

And like the High Plains drifters of old, anyone who crosses the Wolfman’s code is sure to suffer.

They took his humanity … and now it’s time for payback.
Author’s note …

“I was looking to create a character that brought to mind the high plains drifters of old. A western hero that rode into town on a dark horse, delivered justice and retribution in equal measure and then rode off into the sunset. A modern-day gunslinger with a dark secret. I hope that I did the premise justice.”

Praise for Craig Zerf …

“This is an exciting story written by a master...can't wait to read more by this author! What if this story really happened! Wow.”

“This book is sheer Perfection! It has everything. Brenner's story makes you sad then happy, scared and anxious then shouting and cheering. One moment you are crying and the next you can't stop laughing. Craig Zerf is definitely now on my list of favorite authors. Do yourself a favor and buy this book!”

“Violent and exciting. The characters make no excuses, they are monsters and violence is their trade. Despite this the main character is likeable and interesting. This book is a fast, fun read, and I am looking forward to more from the author.”

“Mr. Zerf, I must compliment you on each and every one of the stories in this series! Words like exceptional, outstanding, gripping, unrelenting, engaging and yes enthralling simply are NOT enough to do these stories justice.”

The successors to Project Bloodborn are kidnapping children to alter to serve as their new super soldiers. They make the mistake of taking Shadow's niece and nephew.
Brenner has settled down as sheriff of the small Montana town of Backlash. Now he's drawn back in to put down Project Bloodborn once again.
Very enjoyable series

Synopses:
The synopsis of the first book, Wolf Man:

Brenner is not a werewolf...

But just because he can become a seven foot, four hundred pound killing machine, it doesn't mean that Brenner is bad. In fact, he sticks to a strict code.

And like the High Plains drifters of old, anyone who crosses the Wolfman's code is sure to suffer.

They took his humanity ... and now it's time for payback.

Synopsis of Wolf Pack:

The adventures of Brenner and Griff continues in this book. A couple of old army buddies. Vietnam veterans. One old and one young. One human, one wolf. Together they fight evil. The bad guys this time is another group of US military group much like the first one. Experimenting. However unlike the first US military group, their experimentation has a new twist. Either way, they are still very bad.

The synopsis of the first book was taken from GoodReads at https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36178703-wolf-man on 14/06/2021. The synopsis of the current book, Wolf Pack, is provided by me.

My Thoughts:
What I want to know is, what happened to Bruno Catalano?! The author just left it there hanging for the reader to fill in the blanks. I do not like that kind of writing. It's like, so he's dead. Then later on in the series he rose to life again! That is really annoying! If the bad guys are to rise back to life again, let him die properly first!! Whether he comes back to life or not, at least give the reader the satisfaction of reading him die! Geez! **grumble grumble**

This is also the book which started to use the "chopped-up" kind of writing where a different thread of the story is told after every other chapter. Like for example, chapter 20 is Brenner. 21 is Solomon. Then 22 is Brenner again. And so on and so forth until the end. I so hate this kind of writing. It disrupts the flow of the story! It yanks you out of the story. When that happens I needed a minute to re-align myself again. Annoying!! So what I do is cheat. I read the book every other chapter and when that thread is done, I go back to the last chapter I skipped and follow that thread until the end. Less annoying that way. However, I sincerely hope that Craig Zerf would go back to his old style of writing and abandon this new-found style!

Same old, same old, MO. Our heroes fight bad guys. Blood and gore! Same tune, different song. And still same enjoyable read.

Another short-ish read (at 237 pages) from this author. Still a violent book, not recommended for young readers.

This is a genuinely fun but frustrating book. That's basically my review in a nut shell.

More specifically, the groundwork is great, the characters are fun to read, the bad guys are bad guys and the good guys are good guys; none of this bullshit morally grey, etc etc. But that groundwork has significant cracks that Zerf refuses to fill in.

Among the most frustrating is there's been nothing more about Solomon's eyes turning blue - or happened when the healer touched him in general - a few books ago, no explanation for why Shadow is suddenly so chatty after maintaining absolute silence since she met Brenner (and literally no one brings it up like it never happened), no explanation for why she was glued to his hip from the moment they met and didn't return to her clan (except for brief visits, I assume, since it's mentioned she'd briefly disappear occasionally, and her Alpha had ordered her not to speak of the clan or shifters at some point).

Only a few paragraphs in to chapter 2 of the book Brenner says he catches a glimpse of Shadow out of the corner of his eye looking at him with something close to hatred and the beginning of a snarl on her lips but when he looked properly he saw nothing but love in her eyes. Why? No idea, it's never brought up again.

Seeing a pattern? Outside of a lot of those cracks being associated with Shadow. Maybe I missed some tiny detail or throw-away line, and I really hope I did and it's a me problem, but it just feels kinda lazy, or even an author who changes his mind about his story details more often than he changes his socks.

Like a few other author's I read these are small details which are amplified because I enjoy the rest so much. It's a fun story with fun characters. Brenner and Griff genuinely feel like a couple of guys who've been to hell and back as best friends for 50-odd years. As much as Shadow feels tacked on and not particularly fleshed out, I look forward to her brief moments of interaction with Brenner. Solomon perfectly flip-flops between genuinely likeable and truly disgusting. Bad guys feel like genuine bad guys because the author doesn't police their actions or language.

It's genuinely fun to read, I just desperately want some concrete to fill in those cracks.

The plot in this one is really interesting, Brenner finally realizes that he is not that 'alone' in the world but migth still be 'unique' new secret societys pop their heads around, wich it gives a nice boost to the book. The only problem is that it doesn't make sense that this all 'so reaching' entitys have been so clueless about the events in the book so far . As well in how stupid can this so called black ops group be, really they found out that the shifters are all about family and clan, and their first idea is subjegate them by force instead of forming an alliance? I think I am at the end of my rope with this series, I love the way the were are portrayed here, but the characters are killing me.

FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC Again 😁

This series is completely addictive and I've been unable to stop reading it😃. So far this series has been a never ending fight against the abuse that humans continue to think they need to do to be more than the next guy 🤔. Doesn't matter that the shifters haven't taken away anything from humans, human beings are just disgusting parasites that abuse just about everything 😢. Thanks again Craig, I can't wait to read the next book 🤓.

Great Book, Great Series

Ded Brenner and Shadow have settled down but not for long. Shadow disappears when she finds out that her twin nephew and niece have been kidnapped. Brenner follows and administers justice in the extreme. Solomon searches for vampires to find help with his serum problem. I like the action and humor. I look forward to the next book.

Book 5

This series gets more exciting with each book. It seems Brenner can do anything and his best friend Gruff is a spry one even in his Seventies. Can't wait to read book 6. Will we ever find out what Brenner really is?

Outstanding read !

Excited to finally see this book, have been waiting for it. And, like the others in the series it does disappoint. I love the new twist with Solomon, and all I can say is this series just keeps getting better !
