When I wake up at Locklear Academy, I have no memory of how I got here… or any memories at all. Oh, yeah, and did I mention that I’m dead?
If I ever want to pass on, I’m going to have to recover my past. Easier said than done. But Locklear, aka Ghost Academy, specializes in helping spirits take care of their unfinished business.
There are just a few problems.
First, the X-ers, an extremist group whose main goal is to forcibly send ghosts like me into the great whatever beyond, painfully and without that sense of peace we crave.
Then there’s the polter-ghost who has been following me around since I got here.
But my biggest distraction comes in the form of Rafe: a fox shifter with the most adorable dimples, carrying around way more guilt than any ghost deserves.
Maybe I shouldn’t have a crush in the afterlife, but I’m dead, not blind.
As my memories start to resurface, so do the threats from the X-ers. The clock is ticking and every moment I’m here becomes more dangerous. Not just because of the X-ers, but because the more time I spend with Rafe, the less I want to move on.
Ghost Academy is a YA paranormal academy / urban fantasy that will contribute to your reading related insomnia. This is book one of the Ghost Academy Duology and a spin off of Blakemore Academy.
E.C. Farrell never met a book she didn’t like. (Just kidding! Though she’s not going to bad-mouth the ones she couldn’t finish, she is still mad about the end of Hunger Games Trilogy - RIP Prim) She likes her characters sassy and her endings surprising. Fluent in sarcasm, she has also studied Krav Maga and could out-burpee you any day of the week. When she's not writing, she often teaches creative writing classes for a local non-profit organization Write Create.
(4.5 stars) - Wonderful story with one little hitch
So I should have read closer, but because I already knew this was about Rafe, I just jumped right in. And was promptly confused. Billie? Don't they mean Rafe? Who's Billie? I don't remember anyone named Billie.
Ok, so the story is about Rafe. AND Billie. Who it didn't take long for me to figure out that I actually really liked. She's funny - even when she isn't funny. Like Rafe, she's a lost soul - a ghost - with unfinished business. Unlike Rafe, however, she has no memory of who she is or why she died.
We learn the "rules" of ghosts in general & Ghost Academy in particular. I'm sure there are readers who will likely pick those details apart, but while I'll admit to some questions that flickered in the background, I'm not going to be one of them. There's nothing glaring enough to pull me from a very engaging story, & that's all that really matters to me.
Billie & Rafe have to take care of the unfinished business of their earthly lives, while also avoiding the well meaning but seriously misguided Xers who are trying to help ghosts along to the afterlife but are actually turning ghosts into nightmares called the Twisted.
Meanwhile, Billie & Rafe are growing closer - which since they're in a kind of temporary state, really complicates their lives. Well, deaths.
Especially since Billie is starting to find out who she was, & her life has the potential to complicate her death even more than Rafe.
I was totally, happily immersed in this story from beginning to end. I had only one issue - the ending. As a rule, I pan cliffhangers. Like many readers, I hate, hate, hate them. I just can't bring myself to do so here, however; I liked the story too much.
I'll settle for begging the author to please consider "chapter closure" style plotting instead. Many, perhaps most, readers want some level of satisfaction at the end of the story. Leaving them with everything hanging does the opposite. 152 days to go till book 2... if I die before then, I WILL haunt you. 😉
Billie isn't your average girl. After waking up in a field alone with no memory a dark magic tornado-like entity, she is off to ghost academy. What a way to find out you're dead. Billie meets up with her new ghost guide Kaz and my personal favorite from Supernatural Reform School, Rafe. With a new goal of finding her body and finding out what her unfinished business is, can she make new friends and find out why other kids are turning in to the Twisted?
Love. Love. Love. More Rafe and no Sebastian. Billie is strong and trying to figure out who she is while keeping people at a distance. But wants to help wherever she can too. She is finding out more about herself constantly, but will she kike herself when she sees the whole picture?
I was really hoping to get more of Rafe in this story- his point of view. He was one of my favorites from the previous series. I like the developing story here, enough to keep reading. I dislike the cliff hanger ending ( as I do all books that have them) and I might just come back to this series when it reaches it's end so I don't have to wait.
I love this book. I totally love that I get to read about Rafe. He is amazing and this book has many major thrilling events. It was very much awesome with all the twists and great characters. I just can't wait for the next book.
I have to be honest. Ghosts aren't my thing and I was hesitant to read this series. I chose to after finishing the Blakemore Academy series that leads into this one. I loved Rafe's character in that and so I gave this series a go. I'm so glad I did. I still found the idea of an academy for ghosts to be somewhat silly, but I fell in love with the characters. Billie's character is so original in her quirkiness and yet very complex. The plot and world building were great as always from Ms. Farrell. This was definitely worth my time.
Ghost Academy by E.C Farrell is Book One In the Ghost Academy Duology. This is the first book I’ve read by this author but oh my gosh! But it will not be the last! What a fantastic read, it was so freaking good! The world building in the book with the plot and pace was phenomenal! I could not put my kindle down, I had to keep reading. It was absolutely addicting. This was such an intriguing take on an Academy book; considering it was for ghosts! This truly is an epic start for this paranormal young adult series!
This is about ghosts with unfinished business. The goal is to realize what that is while avoiding conflict with X-er’s who want nothing out to force the ghosts to their end. The characters of Billie and Rafe are amazing. The chemistry these two have were one of my favorite things to read. Not to mention Rafe is a fox shifter! (Can we say hot!) Even though this is a paranormal the characters I read were so relatable and had so much depth. I wanted to be a part of this world. (Well maybe except for the dead part. Lol) E.C Farrell did an amazing job describing this world that it was so easy to picture everything as I was reading! I cannot say enough great things, I can’t wait to read the next book. I absolutely need to add a physical book to my bookshelf! You need to read this book!!!
Can I be a ghost? That's how I feel after reading this book. Farrell does such a fabulous job of creating a world in between life a death that the reader can't help but want to join it.
Billie is dead and can't remember a thing about it or her life. She finds herself at (of all places) a school for the dead. Their main assignment is to discover and complete their unfinished business--and not let their remains get burned by the Xers in the process. Getting burned turns them into a screaming tornado-like poltergeist that sucks up other ghosts in their path. Billie's problem? she has no idea where her body is. Enter Rafe, a fox shifter (excuse me while I pant for a second!) He's dead, too, but at least he finds his remains. He and Billie have a chemistry that sparks from the start. Their quirky voices, their identical curiosity and mischievous natures, and their growing attraction keeps things interesting! They work together to discover their unfinished business and to solve the growing mystery of the Xers and their connections to the school.
Farrell has well developed characters, a solid plot that keeps you guessing, and lots of good old fashioned teenaged angst and sexual tension, all wrapped up in a setting that is realistic, despite being filled with ghosts. If you've ever wondered what happened to your favorite characters who met unfortunate deaths, this is it. I highly recommend! Can't wait for book two! #TEAMRAFE forever!
A very enjoyable read. It's a very different and unique story which has everything in it like adventure and major suspense. The characters are written in a very awesome way that you love them.
The academy for ghosts and the afterlife, it is written in a way which made me want to know more. But afterlife didn't mean hey were free of the life before death. That is the thing I loved most about this book. And Rafe is so awesome. I loved to see him again.
After reading this book, I wanted to write and post this review to share my honest experiences toward the story.
What an amazing spinoff series to the Blakemore Academy books. This story takes pace some time after the ending of the Blakemore Academy series, with Billie waking to find herself a ghost. She meets her ghost guide, Kaz, and Rafe, who you will probably remember from the Blakemore books. Billie has no memories of her life while still alive, and she and Rafe are given the opportunity to attend Locklear Academy, a special school for supernatural people who have passed on to either learn to move on, or how to help others like themselves.
I’ve read a lot of supernatural books lately, and those with individuals seeing spirits, but none about ghosts themselves. The author has taken this unique concept and created a great masterpiece which may redefine and raise awareness to the genre. I loved reading this, and I am looking forward to seeing how the series continues.
That much she knows. As a ghost, she can't move on until she finishes her "unfinished business." The problem is that she can't remember much of anything about being alive. While she tries to figure out how she lived, she and her other new ghostly friends train at a ghost academy together.
If only it were that simple. Billie has to contend with the Xers, who intend to rid the world of all ghosts if they don't get Twisted first.
This was a great, quick read. Even though I am far from a young adult myself, I still connected with Billie as she struggles to figure out exactly who she was. Plus, there's a really cute fox shapeshifter ghost she has her eye on too.
E.C. Farrell did an awesome job with world-building and creating characters we want to root for. Can't wait for the second book in the series!
This is an amazing concept that needs to be told. What happens to supernatural people who have passed on? Well if they are lucky they get to attend a special school for them where they learn to either move on or how to help others like themselves. In this first book we meet Billie, who wakes up and has no idea who she is, what she is or what happened to her before her guide finds her. She meets Rafe and together they try and figure out exactly what they both need to do for the next chapter of their existence. There's a lot of mystery and intrigue that will keep you turning page after page. I can't wait to see where we go from here.
This spin off has all the great things that made you love the original series, all brought together once again. Rafe was a favourite in the blakemore series but with a book all on his own, brilliant. I loved seeing more of Rafe and seeing a more complex side to the story, showing us many different aspects to this world. The story was enjoyable and the story flowed from one chapter to the next with ease. Being back in this world was fantastic and I loved every page. The characters was original and quirky. I'm looking forward to see what else Farrell brings us. Great start to an exciting spin off. Great read and must have if you're a fan of the original blakemore academy series.
Having Read all of the Paranormal Academy Books so far , (even the Backstories of Rafe and Sebastian) I have to say this one is my favorite. But I may be just a little bit biased because I got so much more of my favorite fox. I really bonded with Billie and rooted for her, I liked her attitude and there were moments where I was dying to know her story just as much as she was. There were moments that brought tears to my eyes, but once I started reading this I could not put it down. Worth ignoring everyone on New Years Day to read. It was wonderful, and I am anxiously awaiting the next one!! 5 out of 5 Stars!
I honestly was so excited to read this book! I love reading about ghosts and this takes it to a whole new level! So glad I loved this story. The characters are easy to fall in love with. There are so many twists and questions that have to be answered that it keeps you turning the pages. The ending makes you yearn for book two. Can’t wait to continue the adventure. Definite must read!
I received a free copy of this story which by no means changes how I feel about this story.
This book is so good, so original. 🤩 I was driven to read this book because of Rafe, from the Blakemore Paranormal Academy Series, but was greately surprised by an amazing, original storyline. Billie is the FMC, whom you immediately fall in love with, she is sorrounded by mysteries, since can't remember antyhing from her lifetime and when those mysteries start to unravel, wow, prepare yourself for a bumpy ride!!!! 😳🤯🙈 Can't wait for the next book!!! 😍❤️
Wow! This story is all sorts of twisty. I absolutely love the storyline, it's so different from other academy stories! I love that Rafe is a secondary MC character and we get to know more about him. The MC Billie, well I'm not sure what to make of her character yet, she's a developing character. Which is odd,but honestly works with the story! Looking forward to reading the next book!
This is an honest review based on a requested arc copy. Love, love, love this book! It was so nice to see more of Rafe after his abrupt disappearance in the dragon shifter book! (And who doesn't love that little fox shifter?!) Billie is so relatable and kickass! That ending though?! 😲 Man! Itching to know what happens next!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It’s full of mystery and ghosts, danger and young love. There’s a lot of action between students, teachers, Twisted and Xers. Billie is such a crack up at times, using humour to diffuse and deflect. I firmly believe she will find the answers. I hope the author feels the same way!
This was such a fun twist on paranormal. Academy books are all the rage these days, but I have never read one about a ghost academy, and I enjoyed it! I also enjoyed seeing Rafe again after reading the previous books he was in. I can’t wait for more books!
I love reading about Rafe again. He’s such a sweet guy/ fox 🦊. Billie is a pretty badass witch . She has to go through a whole lot of stuff along with the other ghost.
Ghost Academy: Book One, written by E.C. Farrell, immerses readers in a captivating YA paranormal academy and urban fantasy world. The story follows a protagonist who wakes up at Locklear Academy without any memories, only to discover that she is dead.
In order to pass on to the afterlife, our protagonist must uncover her past and complete her unfinished business. Luckily, Locklear Academy specializes in helping spirits like her find closure. However, obstacles abound. The X-ers, an extremist group, are determined to forcefully send ghosts into the unknown without providing them the peace they seek. On top of that, a persistent polter-ghost seems to be tailing our protagonist since her arrival.
Amidst the challenges, our protagonist finds herself drawn to Rafe, a fox shifter burdened with guilt. Despite being in the afterlife, she can't help but develop feelings for him. As her memories resurface, the threats from the X-ers intensify, and time becomes a ticking clock.
E.C. Farrell skillfully crafts a world that blends the paranormal with the academy setting, offering readers a thrilling and suspenseful reading experience. The protagonist's journey of self-discovery, romance, and the ever-looming danger of the X-ers keeps the pages turning.
Ghost Academy: Book One is an enthralling start to the Ghost Academy Duology and a spin-off of Blakemore Academy. With its compelling storyline and well-developed characters, it will keep readers hooked and contribute to those late-night reading sessions.
This book caters to fans of YA paranormal stories and urban fantasy, delivering an addictive combination of mystery, romance, and supernatural elements. E.C. Farrell's engaging writing style and vivid world-building create a reading experience that will leave readers eagerly anticipating the next installment in the series while embracing their own reading-related insomnia.
Is this death? Like, capital “D” death? Because if it is, I am so not following it to any kind of white light or shining doorway. I’ll go haunt some old mansion before I let this thing take me with it.
Billie wakes up to find she's dead. And has no memories other than her name. Follow her as she joins the Locklear Academy (a school to help spirits take care of their unfinished business), meets a cast of new friends (and someone a little more), and tries to uncover her past. On top of all this, an extremist group, called the Xers, want to forcibly and painfully send ghosts onto the next life before they're ready. Will she be able to find the answers she needs while receiving threats from the Xers? Guess you'll have to read to find out.
So full disclaimer, I'm not familiar at all with any of E.C. Farrell's other works including the Academy series. Did I feel like I needed to read it prior to this? No, I was able to feel confident in my following of the story although there were a couple of direct correlations - it would have helped me with context but I think it's fine. I honestly really enjoyed this book although it's more on the younger side of the YA genre (still 15+ish). The characters had interesting backstories, the whole story premise is unique, and I'm genuine excited to read the sequel. Probably a really niche recommendation but if you enjoyed the k-drama Hotel del Luna then you might enjoy this series.
I quite enjoyed this teen & YA shifter adventure-romance. In a world where superpowers can be stolen & handed out to the entirely wrong sort of people, Billie finds herself dead in the woods with her body and memories missing. Next, she and a fellow lost soul Rafe are taken to the Loclear academy for the Life Deprived, a school for those who aren’t ready to pass on. In Potter-style, she finds herself drawn to things she shouldn’t be and needs to resolve a few mysteries, including why she has general amnesia and knows spells the enemy uses. While I was occasionally lost with the colloguel acronyms like Xers and supes and princess references, I loved the clean swearwords like ‘where the flip’ and the enneagram references. I was rooting for Billie and Rafe in this clean teen romance and loved how the author turned protecting shifters’ rights on its head (yeah, you can go too far when sticking up for someone to the point of sounding condescending). Hopefully, the backstory of Blakemore Academy and the princess will be fleshed out in subsequent books, as it did pique my interest. Recommended for lovers of clean teen & YA mysteries with a romance side-dish and for lovers of shifter and ghost books. A solid 4 stars.
Ghost Acedemy: Book One is the first part in the Ghost Acedemy duology of E.C. Farrell. This duology is a spin-off series of the Blakemore Acedemy series, but it is certainly easy to read separately.
I’m dead. I’m alone. I don’t know who I am
When Billie wakes up, she doesn’t remember anything. Where is she? What is she doing here? Who is she? Soon two men come to get her, and Billie finds out that she has passed away. Because it is not safe outside, Billie is taken to Locklear Academy, a school for lost spirits. Here they help the ghosts finish their unfinished business, after which they can move on.
Billie soon learns that she is only safe within the boundaries of the academy, because of the dangerous group of ghost hunters called the X-ers outside of those boundaries. But to deal with her unfinished business, she will have to be out of the boundaries. Billie soon becomes friends with one of the men named Rafi who is also a fresh student at Locklear Academy. Together they search for their unfinished business. Will they manage to stay out of the hands of the X-ers? Will they be able to move on?
Ghost Acedemy: Book One is a paranormal fantasy with a hint of romance. Both Billie and Rafi play an important role in the story and although the story is told from Billie, Rafi plays the biggest role in my eyes.
Both Rafi and Billie are very nice characters who have a good feeling for humor. Billie doesn’t seem to mind that she died, but because she has no memories, this is also difficult for her. In this book, the characters look for themselves and try to embrace the lesser things in their lives. This gives the book a special message, which is subtly woven into the story.
E.C. Farrell has a very nice writing style, which makes it easy to read through the story. She also knows very well how to write a paranormal story. The story is exciting, fun to read and also wonderfully witty.
The story has a big cliffhanger with a revelation. This makes me very curious about the second part in this duo called Ghost Acedemy: Book Two which will be released on June 1st.
Wow, I did not expect to get wrapped up into a story THAT quickly.
The ending will leave you with your jaw absolutely dropped. Billie, a new ghost with no memory of her life, has to go on a journey to fulfill her unfinished business before she can pass on. Just as she’s gaining crucial information about who she was on Earth, she makes a jaw dropping discovery. But the information she’s receiving doesn’t quite make sense to her.
Ghost Academy by E.C. Farrell is a good, and enjoyable teen young adult mystery paranormal romance read. The story has a great entertaining story line with some really great twists along the way. The characters are great, and they have great chemistry. This story is a very entertaining read. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is the first book of the Ghost Academy series, the books should be read in order. I loved this book. I'm not sure why I didn't read it earlier, because I loved the Blakemore series too. Can't wait to see how the story will go on.
