What would happen if you showed a T-Rex a book? Well, she wouldn't know what to do with it . . . would she?
A madcap, super silly adventure story rooted in the transformative power of books, created by incredible new picture-book duo Rashmi Sirdeshpande and Diane Ewen
Rashmi Sirdeshpande is an award-winning British Indian author of both fiction and nonfiction. Rashmi gave up her beloved job as a lawyer to spend more time stretching and squeezing words into stories. In 2018, she was selected for the Penguin Random House WriteNow mentoring program and started her writing career by signing with Puffin Books. Rashmi loves learning about new things, writing, and uses her platform to be the author that she was missing in her childhood.
I LOVED this book. I found it so funny and found myself giggling after reading each page. This book shows imagination so well and i believe it would really encourage children to use imagination in their writing too. The illustrations are bright and colourful and on each page there are so many illustrations alongside the story and main images. I think this would make a great class discussion activity as you could talk about the stories of some of the images that can be seen in the background. I would definitely use this as a whole-class read aloud text, probably in ks1 however i think it would also be enjoyed in lower ks2. Highly recommend reading.
Never Show a T-Rex a Book! is a wonderful, map-cap, giggle inducing romp. Highly recommended!
Have you ever wondered... what WOULD happen if you started reading a book to a T-Rex?!?! She might catch the reading bug... and then ALL SORTS of things could occur!! The whole word would open up, and then...
A joyous and exuberant celebration of imagination and the possibilities that can open up if you read books.
I would recommend this for: Just before you head out to the library on a cold, wet, windy day when you have to battle your way there and once you arrive, you’ll step through the door together into a magical world of hope, books and dreams.
The Story: What happens when a little girl teaches her T-Rex to read? The dinosaur wants to read every book she can borrow from the library, causing complete chaos along the way and opening up a whole new world. Will the T-Rex decide to be an artist, a doctor, a professor or perhaps an architect? There are so many wonderful possibilities out there for her. How on earth can you hide her and her mountain of books from your parents? What happens if you then take your dinosaur to school? If she teaches her dinosaur friends to read too, what will happen then?
Illustration The use of bright, cheery colours enhances the sheer joy and fun of this story. It is so obvious from their expressions the delight the dinosaur and her owner take in reading. I particularly love the T-Rex’s bright red glasses and the patterns on the girl’s dress. There’s so much to study in Diane Ewen’s illustrations; they perfectly reflect the busyness of a child’s imagination. Each page is worth exploring for the many tiny details that both children and adults will love.

When I read a children’s book, I look for 3 things: (1) a story that is easy to follow, (2) words that will be fun for parents to say, and fun for children to hear, and (3) illustrations that draw attention. Never Show a T-Rex a Book, by Rashmi Sirdeshande and Diane Ewen, earns 5 stars in all 3 categories.
The story is great. The notion is that if you show a T-Rex a book, she will want to read more and more, and share reading with her friends, and eventually everyone is reading. What a clever way to encourage reading in children.
The book is full of fun words: some words will encourage conversation with the child (such as why the word “biscuit” in the UK means “cookie” in the US); others are an avenue to learning, such as “architect, ” “prime minister,” and “cinema.” Others are just fun to say: “big trouble,” “very, very sleepy,” and “a lot of books.”
The illustrations are wonderful. The colors are bright, and the bespectacled T-Rex is adorable. In fact, the illustrations really “make” this book.
I can hardly wait to share this book with the children in our family.
Wow, I could be totally misinterpreting this book. But it seems to have an underlying theme of prejudice in it. The story line seems to be if you give a book to a dinosaur - that dinosaur might become smart and become prime minister and then the dinosaur might want other dinosaur friends to learn to read to. And if they did, they might become smart as well and might start running a lot of things "there would be no stopping them. They will be everywhere! Can You imagine?!" And all of this seems to be said as if it's a bad thing instead of a good thing.
The book seems to have much of the same prejudice that some people who fear immigrants have. Oh, no, if they come they will start taking over.
It is possible that I'm misinterpreting this book. But with so many other good books to read, I'd skip this one.
Who knew that dinosaurs were so studious? Rashmi Sirdeshpande delights with “Never Show a T-Rex a Book”, a quirky story that tells us exactly what would happen if you let a certain curious carnivore sink her teeth into a good book of her own. Similar to the ‘slippery slope’ format popularized by Laura Numeroff’s “If You Give….” series, this hilarious tale gradually builds with each page, until pandemonium ensues!
The book creatively encourages kids to see how magical and fun reading truly can be. Diane Ewen’s illustrations are incredibly bright, boisterous, and intricate, helping make “Never Show a T-Rex” a real page-turner. The colorful cover alone will have your little velociraptor wanting to claw through it for his or her next storytime.
We love books and know just how far they can take you into the world of your imagination. This is a colourful picture book with brilliant illustrations by Diane Ewen. The funny story asks you to imagine what might happen if you showed a T-Rex a book?
The main character is a little girl who think the T-Rex wouldn’t know what to do with it . . . but then she begins to think about all the things that looking a the book could cause. From teaching the dinosaur to read, sneaking her into the library, learning about so many different topics then deciding what job she could have!
This is silly and fun adventure story that perfectly shows how books can change your life in all kinds of ways.
Along the lines of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, but a bit more sophisticated in terms of the potential repercussions and with a focus on using one's imagination. This is obviously a British book, so we talked a little bit about who the Prime Minister is. I will admit that I substituted the word "movie theater" for cinema, just to make it a little clearer for preschoolers.
This was such a fun book! It gave off If You Give a Mouse a Cookie vibes with the circular story telling, but with DINOSAURS! An adorable ode to imagination and the joy of reading. The bright illustrations support the exploration of imagination with so many details. I found that it was a great springboard for discussing why we love reading and the benefits of reading.
Wonderful picture book that encourages children to use their imagination and think big - as big as a dinosaur! Particularly loved the pro reading and libraries message of course and the illustrations are great fun.
A circular style book. The author shows what would happen if you teach a T-rex to read. It can lead to major growth and learning for dinosaurs of all types. Young readers will appreciate the fun and joy. Older readers will appreciate the concepts and the detailed illustrations.
Never show a T. rex a Book, by Sirdeshpande an illustrated by Ewen is an amazing children’s story about imagination and what would happen. I love the illustrations. I highly recommend this superb book.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
So... we want to discourage dinosaurs (and kids) from reading... because they might become very good readers, thus changing the world in a positive way? That's a strange take.
I enjoyed reading this to my youngest. It's like Give A Mouse a cookie, but started with a girl who is reading to her toy T. Rex and her imagination gets bigger and bigger. So fun and cute.
