Gosho Aoyama (青山剛昌) is a Japanese manga artist. He is best known as the creator of the manga series Detective Conan (known in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom as Case Closed).
Aoyama made his debut as a manga artist with the work Chotto Matte which was published in the weekly magazine Shōnen Sunday on winter of 1987. Shortly after that, another work by Aoyama, Magic Kaito, was published on the same magazine.
this volume was such a big disappointment. none of the mysteries were as entertaining as the previous ones and the reveals of how the murders were committed were so unbelievably ridiculous and eyeroll inducing. i definitely have a limit where i’m just like i refuse to suspend my disbelief and each one of the three mysteries featured in this volume was that for me.
the first mystery was a murder during a live television broadcast and the reveal had me laughing not from how good it was but solely how bad and ridiculously ott it was .
the second mystery (the worst of the lot) was about a murder in a restaurant during a secret rendezvous and it felt like a rush job to introduce a potentially important relative of one of the main characters and but it could have been done in a much more interesting way.
the beginning of the third mystery had me hoping this volume would be saved because i loved how it was set in a temple atop a mountain but i was sorely disappointed because the method of murder purely pissed me off. idk but it felt so stupid omg and insultingly ott plus gave me filler vibes.
however, this last mystery was completely wrapped up in this volume so that makes me hopeful that the next volume is going to feature some really great mysteries and also move the main storyline along.
This isn't really a review, but Eri Kisaki, you're a real cool mum. Her introduction is great and it's always a pleasure to have her involved in cases. It's also nice to have more concluded stories in one volume, making the book feel more like a complete package than one which is stringing you along for the long run.
★★★✯☆ - 3.5 To be honest, this volume was kind of forgettable.. It contained three full cases in addition to the resolution of the case started in volume 10. The conclusion of the first case was interesting. I always enjoy finding the hidden meaning of dying massages, but I lacked interest in the characters involved. The second case was probably my favourite one, which is surprising, as we knew who the culprit was from the start. We even knew some specifics of how the crime was committed from the start. Yet, it was pretty interesting to unravel the full scheme of the plot and see Conan unravel it. And I think it was one of the most fun crime explanation scenes. The third case should have been to my liking. We had a small number of suspects and interesting clues to be found. My lack of enjoyment might arose from the fact that I remembered too much from the anime and especially that the new character which was introduced in this case was not new to me, so all of Shinichi’s speculations were just annoying. The last case, again, was very interesting. I feel like I should have liked it more than I did, but then again, it was pretty short and we were mostly following conan and not learning too much about the characters. While the motive and the procedure were relatable and creative, the overall case was lacking some more depth. So there was nothing truly wrong with these cases, but I did not love any of them either.
Meine Meinung: Dieser Band gefiel mir richtig gut.
No cliffhanger in this volume :) Not my most favorite of volumes, but still entertaining nevertheless!
Case 1: We finish off the case from the previous volume.
Case 2: Richard is invited as a guest on a live television broadcast show for mystery lovers. He's as silly and awkward as ever, and things all seem normal, until the show's producer is found dead. Conan knows who the killer is, but can he prove it?
This case itself wasn't particularly exciting to me. The villain of this one and his motivation are kind of 'eh'? But the method used for how the victim died was really unique and creative. While I remembered from when I first read this volume, it was still really cool to go through the motions again in Conan figuring it out. (And also seeing Richard at the start being goofy is always entertaining xD)
Case 3: Rachel tries to sneak out for a secret date with Jimmy, which leaves Conan highly suspicious--he is Jimmy! So who is Rachel meeting up with? As Conan waits in the cafe for this mysterious person, someone is murdered in the bathroom! Who is the killer? And, more importantly, the person Rachel planned to meet??
This one was pretty cute. It's interesting to see how Conan/Jimmy handles himself without Richard to cover for him. And him being a jelly bean is always entertaining. (The facial expressions are so well drawn!) We also get to meet a new semi-recurring character this chapter, and the reveal was hilarious. The murder itself wasn't so much the highlight of this case for me so much as the new character. They really steal the show!
Case 4: Out in the wilderness, Richard manages to puncture the tire of their car, leaving him, Rachel, and Conan stranded. Or so they thought. They managed to find a monastery to stay the night. But by morning, the priest is found dead. Was it suicide, or murder?
This case, while having beautiful art, feels a little more far-fetched to me. Certainly some of the cases are a little wild, but this one in particular has always stuck around in my head as being at least a little silly. It was also really funny to see Conan/Jimmy pull out of his head when discussing how the case happened.
I do especially love the artwork in this chapter though. And it was nice to see a little more about Japanese culture and mythology with the discussion of Tengu.
For Japanese Learners:
Check my previous review on book two for more info. This is a series, so things are gonna be consistent.
This was a very solid Volume. I had no all time favourite Moments Tabs but also no truly negative tabs. Each of the three cases in here was very great to amazing and we got to meet Eri ♥ which is always a fun time.
Case 1: after one chapter finishing up the prior case we got into the best case of this volume (imo) - this one was an obvi case and an amazing one at that. I adored the way it was presented to us and really liked both killer and motive a lot. Great Case with lots of little moments and nods. Kogoro also got to show off some actual knowledge in here.
Case 2: Rans mysterious date is a case that i always remember intensely well. But it is a blast regardless of knowing everything by heart. I love the set-up for this one and Shinichis thoughts and actions throughout. Eri is awesome and we stan her. Megure had some nice moments and even though we only got a second of Sonoko she made one hell of a time of it and we love her for it. YOU GO GIRL ♥ Definitely really like the case for the main cast but what drags it down a bit are the case only characters - which are pretty bland and motive and killer were mediocre at best (but they weren't supposed to be the main focus of the case anyway which means it was still GREAT).
Case 3: When I saw that this case was next I remembered the basics and wasn't sure how much I liked it in general - the answer ended up being: a lot! What truly makes this case for me is the first chapter - I adore the set-up and the atmosphere of the chapter. Ten'ei and Kannen also had some seriously great moments and pieces of dialogue. I truly ended up liking Kannen A LOT. And Ten'ei I ended up HATING (in a good way) and still digging his presence in the story. The reveal of how the murder was done was dragging a bit for me and not that interesting and we spent a lot of time on that which dragged the case down a bit. But the killer was good (didn't get entirely enough focus to be great but he was good) and did he have one hell of a motive. SUCH a good motive. Up there for me for sure. I ended up really liking this case, it is simply dragged down a little by all the exposition about the how that I did not find as intriguing as Gosho wanted me to^^
Not one of my favourite Volumes ever but definitely one I enjoy immensely!
This volume opens with the revelation of the killer from the last story! I don't know if this is the way future volumes will work, but it truly is captivating...and sometimes forces you to read the previous volume (or at least last few pages) to get you in the right mindset for the newest volume of reading pleasure. The second case (or rather first full one) is about a TV personality and the murder of the TV producer. What seems like an impossible murder is concluded live on TV! (I'm sure ratings would be BEYOND over the top, but also feel that the case might get dismissed because of the broadcast of the person presumed guilty of the crime). The next case involves a murder in a diner. The next case has to do with the "Tengu of the Mist" (A famous long nosed character from Japanese lore and the them for the cover picture of this volume). Another fun romp in the world of Detective Conan!
1. We get the ending of the Medical Professors murder case. 2. The TV Station Murder Case - which’s was pretty fun for the most part. 3. The Coffee Shop Case - Where we meet [redacted]’s mother for the first time (which is hard to not to know these days). 4. And finally the Mist Tengu Case - which was a bit of a slog but interesting enough.
Overall decent volume and fun mysteries the TV station and Coffee Shop cases being the highlights of the volume. But as a follow up the crazy that was the previous book, it lacked a some bite.
Regardless, still fun as always, moving on to v12 after finishing a few other things (Like Kaito Kid v1)
(Oh, I just noticed how this edition calls Shinichi "Jimmy", that's SO goofy, I love it.)
Now, onto the best case of the volume: Murder in the temple with a little paranormal spice to it. Sure, the murderer was still a human, but going the Scooby Doo route of adding a monster to the story made it all the more interesting. Would love for the series to actually get a little paranormal later on. Here's to hoping.
Never spend the night in a temple. At least in the mountain your chances of being hung by a vengeful monk are fewer than otherwise.
Finishing off the ski lodge mystery, this volume also includes three other unique murder cases all with differing locales and specific motives!
My favorite case of the volume had to be the "Important Person" restaurant case as it marked the first appearance of one of my favorite side characters of the series! Plus, it was strictly placed the murder at the forefront with Jimmy not having to jump through as many hoops as he does when having to solve cases with Richard...
Nämä vaan ovat niin karkkia 🥰 Pakko ihailla kirjailijaa, sillä edelleen hän keksii hyviä tarinoita, joissa on kaikki hyvän dekkarin elementit: uskottava juoni, kunnon aivopähkinä ja mahdollisuus kokeilla omia salapoliisin taitoja 😁
Piirrostyyli on myös upea! Kuvat ovat selkeitä ja melkein elokuvamaisia. Niiden avulla tarinan seuraaminen on helppoa ja luodaan tunnelmaa.
Suosittelen näitä kirjoja kaikille, joita dekkarit, manga ja Japani kiinnostavat 😊
The first case does the always interesting tactic of showing us the criminal from the get go, and we get to go along on Conan's journey of finding evidence to arrest them. Next we have Rachel sneaking off to meet someone, and oh boy is that an interesting someone! In the final case we dip our toes into Japanese mythology and learn about the evil Tengu, who is said to kill and eat people. Spooky!
I'll admit it, that last case in here was one of those that scare me to death :D there's three very suspenseful cases in this one, the resolution of the last case from volume 10 as well. This ends on a clean cut though, I greatly appreciate that. Also really loved meeting Ran's mom, even though I'll never understand how she got with Kogoro in the first place :D
The idea that Shinichi has a body memory of Ran's mother based on how she'd punish him when he and Ran were kids is kind of funny. I also think that some of the strategies that the murderers in this series uses to kill and conceal their crimes are kind of wild. They are very dedicated in their methods.
4/5 I liked this one. I really did. What may be a popular opinion is probably due to the fact that there are so many over-the-top situations and explanations that I definitely found myself chuckling and re-reading to be sure I read correctly. But— —the amount of imagination and dedication to making these crimes while still trying to maintain some form of logical thought is actually insane.
Another excellent volume with fun mysteries. I really liked the last one, especially how the murderer accidentally confessed but thinking he's getting away with it. I'm so happy there are many more volumes and tons of mysteries to go.
