Dakota Burn by D V Berkom reads like a true story. Frightening.

From the hot temperatures of Africa to the cold tundra of North Dakota, Derek follows his mission in life, but he can’t do it alone. Sooooo, he calls Leina Basso for help…and here she is.

Few understand their brand of justice, but sometimes rules need to be broken for the better good.

Jinn…saved and mentored by Leine, I so wanted her character to grow and be shared in one of Leine Basso’s stories. It’s like you read my mind, D. She is such a firecracker, I am happy to hear she is doing great.

Even in Hansen, North Dakota, population 1500, scum sucking sex trafficers are alive and well…until…they meet Leine.

I see a character named Sherry and I love it. Whether it was intentional or not, it is rare when I see my name in any book. I am a victim, one of the trafficked girls, and I am so glad that Leine is on the case.

“How do you do it? You can’t save everybody.”

“No, but I can sure as hell try.”

I think that describes that strong, determined character. She does not hesitate to put her life on the line for what she knows is right, regardless of the consequences.

WOW! I love an author that does their research and D V Berkom makes this read like a true crime story with the depth and details bringing to life the terrified tear stricken young girls and the guns blazing, bullets flying battles.

Strong characters are a must in D V Berkom’s novels and I love the Leine Basso series, about a former government assassin that has no problem sharing the limelight with other memorable characters, like Jinn and Chloe…and Derek.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Dakota Burn by D V Berkom.

Jerked away from sunny L.A. to the bitter cold of North Dakota, Leine Basso, former assassin, and now fighting human trafficking for SHEN, joins Derek van der Haar, former poacher, now also on the hunt for those who traffic in children, in an operation to bring down a notorious child sex trafficker in one of the oil boom towns of the Dakotas. The closer they get to their prey, the more dangerous it becomes, as they learn that high-powered men all over the country are behind the heinous happenings, and they will stop at nothing to continue raking in their dirty dollars.

Dakota Burn by best-selling author D.V. Berkom is without doubt the best, and most gut-wrenching Basso thriller yet. Bodies fall along with criminal empires, as Leine and Derek face almost insurmountable odds in their quest to bring justice—of the final kind—to men who have zero respect for life.

If you’re a Leine Basso fan, as I am, you’ll love this book. A strong, determined female heroine who not only competes in a man’s world, but prevails. This penetrating look at the problem of human trafficking in the United States, where most of the population seems unaware of its existence, will open your eyes and leave you breathless in awe.

I received a complimentary copy of this latest Basso magnum opus, and once I started reading, time stopped, but I didn’t until I’d read every last thrilling word. Do yourself a favor—don’t let this one get away.

Here she is again: Leine Basso, taking you on a roller-coaster ride, making your heart stop, taking your breath away and giving you the odd tummy-wobble...without leaving the comfort of your best reading spot: sofa/bed/sun lounger!

Number eight in the series, there's no letting up in thrills, spills, action, shoot-outs and despicable, evil criminals: child sex-traffickers this time and Leine pairs up with old colleague, Derek, to take down this dangerous ring of unscrupulous, amoral, disgusting men.

Unsavoury and unpalatable though the subject is, in the hands of this brilliant author, the atrocity of the crime and its perpetrators is moulded into a story that stages her writing skills at their very best. Leine may be our girl with bomb-proof armour, but we love her because of her heart and passion for obliterating scum.

As always, gripping, fast-paced with edge-of-your-seat action. Berkom has only one standard: excellence.

I received a free advance ARC copy from the author for my honest review and I also purchased a copy from amazon.com. Something I like to do, to support one of my favorite authors.

"Dakota Burn" starts with a bang, with a storyline that could be ripped right out of the headlines. Which D.V. expertly sets up from the first paragraph in Lucky's, in frigid cold North Dakota winter, with ex-poacher Derek van der Haar impatiently waiting for someone. He ends up rescuing a young runaway, then makes a call to an old friend Leine Basso asking for help and you end up with a heart pounding edge of your seat read.

The coolest thing with "Dakota Burn" and the series. Is that Berkom just grabs your attention from the first paragraph, just transposes you into the pages, your right their for all the action, love that she adds new elements to the story, with each books, she adds in a little trickery, it's never the same things over and over and be them good or bad, she just vividly brings her characters to life and got teary eyed when you realize that Chloe will ended up dying.

How can you not like Leine Basso character, she's superhuman, tough as nails, no fear, can handle any situation, lethal with a gun and protector of the weak, that can't defend themselves. She's a retired assassin, who now works as a agent for Shen, she travels any where to help rescue victims of sex trafficking, she's well connected and even coming to the dark underbelly of the Bakken oil fields in North Dakota.

For me as an avid Western genre fan. "Dakota Burn" is a modern-day Western set in North Dakota's Bakken Oil Fields, human life is a commodity and outlaws still rule. It's an epic good verse evil tale, that builds to an epic conclusion and good conquer's evil in the end.

You'll have to read it, too know what happens in "Dakota Burn", not only Derek but another character that has taken over a certain book in the series, also appears in this one and don't want to spoil it by giving anything away.

Berkom is an amazing author, definitely if you haven't yet, give her books a try, her Leine Basso character awesome, then you have Kate Jones and she'll end up being your new favorite author.

Another electrifying adventure with Leine…

As an armchair adventurer, I have been enthralled by each of the Leine Basso books and I am happy to say that this one was no exception. In this installment, Leine braves the frigid cold of North Dakota to dispense her unique brand of justice to a truly loathsome villain who makes his fortune by exploiting children and contributing to the ever-burgeoning plague of human trafficking. It seems that the citizens of North Dakota, like much of the United States, are unaware of the misery and suffering that is taking place in their communities. When confronted with the possibility of such horrors, some turn a blind eye, some prefer not to get involved due to the immense danger of dealing with the soulless individuals responsible for such heinous crimes, but others, like Leine and her friends will risk their lives to end such vile practices. As always, the story is captivating from the first page up to the very end. The characters, some likeable, some loathsome, are all well-developed and believable. Being a long-standing series, there are brief mentions of characters familiar from other stories, but this book can absolutely be read as a stand-alone, if so desired, without invoking a feeling of having missed important background. The storyline is complete with a satisfying ending (no cliffhanger) but you just know that there is more adventure in store for Leine and her cohorts. Like most thrillers, the action and tension are intense, but you will not be bombarded with excessive coarse language or overly graphic descriptions of the violence which takes place. Given that you are reading about child exploitation in the sex industry, you will be introduced to some unsavory concepts but, thankfully, there is no explicit material presented. Without reservation, I highly recommend this author and this series for anyone who enjoys fast-paced, intelligent thrillers involving relevant and timely issues.

I was gifted an advance copy of this book by the author and am voluntarily leaving this honest and unbiased review.

If you find this review helpful, thank you for so indicating.

If you’ve read a few books in the Leine Basso series and liked them, odds are good you’ll like the others including this one. You’ll also have an idea of what you might expect. Someone will be involved in sex trafficking. SHEN, the association Leine works for will send her to investigate. There will probably be a few people shot. Some of those could be by the bad guys, some could be by the good guys and even though the legality of what happens is questionable, you’re not at all upset to see it happen. Spoiler alert: Eventually the operation will be shutdown with the major players facing justice, if they survive. Yeah, that’s not really a spoiler because who really expects the protagonist of a thriller to ever not survive?

The basic format is engaging and exciting, but what really sets each book apart are the specifics. Sometimes that’s the specific bad guys and what they’re doing. Sometimes it’s something about this case that is especially a big deal to Leine and the reader. Sometimes it’s the setting. For me, the last two things are what sets this volume apart. The something special is the involvement of Jinn, a character from a prior installment of this series who is now working with Leine. I also found the setting in North Dakota to be interesting and a change of pace. Many books in the series have taken place on the west coast which has been done to death in books, TV, and movies, almost to the point where a southern California location is about as close to generic as you can be. It’s easy to imagine that the oil boom in North Dakota could have had some negative side-effects. The author did a good job of evoking the qualities a rural middle-of-nowhere location like this has and integrating them into the story. As always, Leine let me hang out for an intense and at times gut-wrenching case and I’m glad I came along for the ride.

Reading Stuff 'n' Things

I seem to have run out of superlatives to describe this series of books by D.V. Berkom and containing the awesome Leine Basso so will just say it's another fantastic read and a must-read addition to anyone's bookshelf be it a physical one or electronic.

With an extremely disturbing but, tragically, all too realistic story line, this book contains subject matter which is distasteful and abhorrent to the majority of the "normal" population however, it is treated with respect and restraint by the author.

Excellent and believable characters litter this book from the goodies to the villains with Derek being a particular favourite of mine along with Jinn who gets better and better with each outing. The setting amongst the bleakness of an oil town in North Dakota is perfect and adds to the atmosphere and darkness of the subject matter.

Full of action and a fair amount of violence, this book is written at a quick pace which had me devouring it at every opportunity with the only complaint I have being that I finished it too quickly!

Another hit for me and I have no hesitation in recommending any of them in the series; you don't particularly need to read them in sequence but I would certainly advise that you do in order to get the most out of the characters and to have a greater understanding of their motivations and thought processes.

I must thank the author for sending me a copy in return for a honest and unbiased review - I can't wait for the next one.

In my mind, Dakota Burn is D.V. Berkom’s fastest paced and action-packed Leine Basso novel. It is simply one of those books that have you making up excuses to stay up later, to postpone meals or to get some work done. In an earlier review I said that the reading was like riding a roller coaster: Building suspense is the click-click-click of the cars climbing the hill. The climax come in the freefall at the top. Dakota Burn is not that at all. It is a balls-to-the wall wild ride from beginning to end, and I consider it one of the best if not the best of D.B.’s Leine Basso novels. I have enjoyed them all, but initially I came across one of them, loved it, so went back and started from the beginning. I think a person unfamiliar with Leine could well read Dakota Burn first as a stand-alone, but then would surely go back to the beginning and read them through. Berkom’s style is straight-forward prose that captures the emotions of the characters is a way that surpasses most modern novelists. Sometimes you know more about the character than the character does about herself. I find Berkom to be one of the most exciting authors of thrillers writing today. Leine Basso is a great character to love. [Note: I received and advance reader’s copy of Dakota Burn from the author.]

“I wish more people would pay attention to what’s happening—not just in Hansen, but all over the United States. We need more people like you two.” He nodded at Leine and Derek. “Child sex trafficking—trafficking, period—is a cancer that needs to be eliminated. Law enforcement can’t do it alone. We need people who care to get involved.”

Isn’t Leine supposed to be in L.A? Instead we see her in cold and frozen North Dakota helping Derek van der Haar find a group of sex traffickers and save the children. The need to help the children is the overarching focus of a tightly drawn from-the-headlines story that can be found all over the world. You can’t help but be angry as you read...

Having worked in the Dakotas I can tell you D V Berkom has got the description of the areas down pat and was one of the reasons I offered to read and review this book. Having never read any others in the series I was still captivated by the depth of knowledge reflected in the fast moving book with well written characters. This may be my first Leine Basso, but it isn’t my last. Highly Recommended 5/5

Dakota Burn, Leine Basso’s latest gripping adventure, is set in the icy, bleak winter landscape of North Dakota devastated by the oil industry. The frozen land, the omnipresent oil rigs, the countless oil trucks create a stark, vivid picture of what the industry has done to land and people.

The focus however, is not on the rough-neck labourers, or the down-trodden farmers, but on the evil gang of child traffickers and their enforcers who steal and use children as young as eight or nine for their pleasure and profit. Leine and Derek van der Haar cut a satisfying swathe of destruction through the gang, not without some tragic losses on their own side, culminating in the death of the leader. It is a clever, fast moving, and thrilling story.

I find myself haunted by the children, and their suffering at the hands of vile, inhuman men who can find pleasure in such cruel exploitation, and also by the hellish vision of the ugly exploitation of the land - a double exposure of man’s ruthless greed. Well written as usual, and an excellent read.

Another great read by DV Berkom.
I love the Leine Basso books, so I made sure I signed up to the author's mailing list to be notified of the next in the series. This didn't disappoint.
Emails come out rarely, and with only with pertinent information, enabling me to a) anticipate the new novel (just what I wanted at the end of a summer) and b) preorder so it downloads painlessly to my Kobo.
The book itself brings a couple of characters from Leine's back story into play, and fleshes them out further. That was truly a joy. The story is classic Berkom - nail-biting, gripping, filled with jeopardy and realism. I felt fear, amusement, sadness, loss and relief at various stages. It felt a little longer than previous novels in the series - and this is excellent because I need more Leine in my life -but is perfectly paced. I've found it very difficult to put it down to do those crucial things in my life.
Classic Berkom - a thrilling thriller, with strong women throughout, that reads smoothly with a very convincing story.

A great action thriller that will keep you swiping your Kindle way past your bedtime! The subject matter addresses a sensitive subject in teen trafficking and gives you the thrill, mystery, and drama you are seeking when looking for a sure thing thriller. Never a spoiler in my reviews, just pick up this book and start reading for the page-turning, action-packed story you are anticipating when you finish these reviews and the blurb! Great character and story development, twists and turns; heart-wrenching at times, but one of the best things about this book is you don't have to have read the others before this to get into it, (but you'll certainly want to). Leine Basso is a strong, kick-ass female protagonist that you'll be glad you started following! I received an ARC of this book and am providing my honest review to help you decide! You'll be glad you made the choice to get this book!

Dakota Burn

Our friend and protagonist - Leine Basso - and her good friend from South Africa - Derek - get caught in another case of sex trafficking of teen and preteen victims.

I can’t think of anything that enrages me more than even the thought of such vile, heartless, and disgusting animals. Not to mention their clientele.

This time our heroes fight the good fight - the oh so necessary fight- in a North Dakota Winter.

You cannot possibly stop reading till you have finished. Nor can you manage to keep your blood below the boiling point.

Another great read, another page burner. Actually a chapter burner.

Enjoy the novel as I have enjoyed every entry in the series.

Somehow, someway, someday the traffickers must be stopped.

I don’t wish to reveal any of the details of the novel nor the plot or outcome, but IT IS A MUST READ.

My thanks to DV Berkom ...

Another excellent book by a great author, I always look forward to new releases by this author and this book was everything I would expect lots of action.....and a great read. I like Leine as a character as she is she tough but we also see a soft side to her as well but she is definitely the character I would want to recuse me if I was kidnapped.
Leine gets a phone call from an old friend asking for help. He has stumbled on a young trafficked girl that needs her expertise and he thinks there could be more. Dropping everything Leine rushes to the middle of nowhere freezing cold North Dakota, where things are a lot worse than one kidnapped girl. With lives on the line Leine must call in reinforcements and gets help from new C.H.E.N recruit Jin , a stripper and even the mob. It's a race against time, cold weather and even guns for Leine to save the day

Dakota Burn evokes many emotions with DV Berkom at the helm as great Author which shines a beautiful light on such a sad dark ugly topic of child trafficking and child exploitation. DV Berkom uses well developed character Leine to deal out her own form of justice for the problem. Leine, former assassin, definitely uses another type of light to deal that justice too! Such a beautiful story and well written, for such a dark sad worldly issue which is all too real. Kudos to DV Berkom for undertaking this topic, and using her very accomplished writing skills to attack such a topic as child trafficking, and child exploitation with her great read Dakota Burn. Her well developed character, Leine, in Dakota Burn, attacks with a vengeance, the evil doer’s in her own way and brings hope to a sad dark problem. A MUST READ.

Another well done Leine Basso thriller from DV Berkom. This time, Leine goes to the freezing cold of N. Dakota. She reconnects with an old friend and they try to take down the main guy doing the sex trafficking. Leine meets some of the girls that had gone missing. Despite not being the emotional type, she cares for these girls. Jinn, from a previous book, has been trained and is sent on this mission to help Leine figure out what's going on.
DV is an excellent writer, writes "unputdownable" books. I received this book free as part of her ARC group and to write an honest review.

I can't recommend this series enough.

Out to save the innocent no matter where. In the middle of a wind and snow whipped small town in North Dakota, Derek discovers what he believes is an illegal operation in the middle of a new oil rush in the area. He calls in Leine to verify his suspicions. Derek and Leine discover an operation larger than they expected. The intrigue of discovering where all the puzzle pieces are hidden takes the help of some locals. Finding the perpetrators, especially the higher ups, is a difficult task. This story is filled with harsh weather, and even harsher people. The adventure is intense and sometimes gruesome. Again, an eye opening experience to the realities of life. Love her books.

This book is a fantastic read. Leine Basso is defintely a protagonist that I love. She's strong, knows what she wants, what she won't put up with and doesn't need any help to do it. The duo she formed with Derek gels beautifully, and I really appreciated the fact that a love interest wasn't explored as it would have taken away from the story. I was rooting for Chloe and Derek the whole way through and Gloria was a good character. Fantastic read, this is probably my favourite in the series so far.

Another great Leine Basso thriller by D. V. Berkom. This one takes place in North Dakota and again Leine and her counterpart Derek are on the trail of child sex traffickers. Very fast paced and exciting. It’s a shame that these stories are so real! There was 104 arrested in my hometown this week for sex trafficking. The character are very real and you feel their pain. Looking forward to the next book in the series! I received an advance copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Leine is back in action, in the USA this time. Dakota is in the spotlight.
Child molestation and slavery, prostitution and murder. All are to be found in these pages. What is also found is hope. Hope that someone can help these children and let them escape from the slavery and degradation.
Hope's helper is Leine Basso. Be ready for a real action packed novel, be appalled at some of the scenes, rightly so, and root for Leine and her companions to remove the stain and the corruption.

I received an arc copy of the ebook.

In my view this is the best of the Leine Basso stories to date. The location is different and exciting, and very well described. The exploiters that follow a boom town are portrayed well, and the interaction as Leine attempts to save her friends and take the criminals down are great in themselves. I received an advanced copy of this book, and it is one of the best I have received. The characters, the plot, the writing, it is all there! I did got back and re-read the book before writing this review.

This story is populated with strong characters Derek, Leine, and Lucky who influence others like Chloe and Jinn to become more confident in their abilities to help bring down the child sex traffickers who reside in their town. Add in a bunch of mobsters and there’s a lot of trouble coming their way in Hansen, North Dakota. Of course, there is a lot of shooting, killing, and blowing things up action to keep the suspense up over who will win.

It was definitely hard to put this book down so I kept reading to the end. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a lot of action and suspense.

Wow! Another great book in this series. You will not be disappointed!

I love this series by DV Berkom. Leine Basso is not a woman to cross and she is always willing to help fight the good fight against the evil people in the world. Great way to raise awareness about the human trafficking problem worldwide. It is amazing the out of the way, small town places you hear of it happening. And it is not only in third world countries people! I wish our heroine were real and could rid the world of all these monsters!

It’s always a pleasure to read a Leine Basso novel
Each one is a fast paced adrenaline junkie ride, full throttle all the way.
From page one you are drawn into the story. Sadly there are casualties along the way but that’s life. It was hard to imagine the freezing environment that the story was written in as we don’t get snow where we live.
Great story. D.V. Is one of the best action thriller writers I know .

Another Leine Basso thriller from D.V Berkom. This one does not disappoint. Leine gets involved in finding a kidnapped girl, Mimi. She joins Derek to try to take down the leader and the organization that is involved in human trafficking. Jinn joins her in an under cover role to take down the leader of the organization. This is a thrill ride and a page turner. I am anxiously awaiting the next Leine novel.

DAKOTA..BURN...by D.K..Berkom
Leinè and Derek find themselves in the frozen vast land of North Dakota. The mission is not of terrorists, but of inhuman people seeking their profit and pleasure in sex trafficking. The author brought a haunting story, of the destruction. To finally killing, to stop. A story that was well done, and readers will remember.
