Two years have passed since Amelia left Orville. Her senior year of high school had been a mess, her dad’s death being a big reason why. The time away has given her some perspective and now Amelia is ready to face what, and who, she left in her hometown. However, her first night back doesn’t go as planned. Her mom forgets to pick Amelia up at the train station, she falls in the river and almost dies, the police pick her up in the school parking lot, and her brother calls her a monster. Amelia’s only hope for a normal summer resides in reconnecting with her friends, but guilt, fear, and especially her insecurity make even that difficult. Especially when those feelings speak in her mind.

I was supposed to be an arc reader for this book but I flaked and I'm genuinely sorry about that. But I did buy a copy when it came out... it just took me a while to read it. Yay procrastination. Anyways, on to the review.

Formatting: 8/10
A couple minor things: The size of the book makes it a little awkward to hold, and the cover art is kind of confusing. I can't tell if the person on the cover has open eyes or closed. Also the font in the first paragraph of page 234 looks smaller than all the rest of the font but it's really hard to tell.

The frogs are adorable though! I loved seeing them on the pages and the dedication was so cute.

Mechanics: 8/10
It could have used another proofread. Most if not all of the em-dashes were hyphens, and there were some typos and miswritten words (ex: tires breaking instead of tires braking). But overall it was decent.

Style: 9/10
I found the opening slow, enough so that it took me three tries to get through to the rest of the book. In general the whole book has a slower pacing than I'm used to, but it suited the story and it wasn't hard to adjust to.

Otherwise I liked the writing style. The narrator's sass was right up my alley, I especially agree with the "bodies are gross" sentiment. Amelia was a darling, I spent a lot of the book wanting to scoop her up in a hug. And the POV was super interesting to read. I've never read a book written like this before, it added a whole other layer of intrigue and suspense.

Content: 10/10
So we've already established that the narration is a really cool aspect of this story and the author does a great job of creating characters that readers can love and get invested in. It's a short book, at twelve chapters and an epilogue but the plot is twisty and with an unreliable narrator, readers are kept on their toes.

The topic of mental illness is important to the story and the author handles it very well. The author's page says that she has a bachelor's in psychology and it's obvious that she put that knowledge to use while writing this book. Even the herbal treatments mentioned are accurate (according to a google search, I'm not a professional).

There are a lot of untied loose ends by the end of the book, so I can only hope that there are more books to come in this saga.

Overall
I can't wait to read the next one!
