The Beautiful Dead is the first book to feature Cal Nyx, a park ranger based in the Australian outback, and although I was hoping it would follow in the successful footsteps of other recent Aussie based crime such as Jane Harper’s atmospheric thrillers, it was a tad disappointing. Granted there is certainly potential but it’s quite slow to engage you and whilst it definitely gets better the deeper into it you get I would’ve liked a little more of the sparkling Aussie setting with a depiction of the searing heat, miles of barren desert and the renowned Aussie banter/sense of humour. Should there be a second instalment I would consider picking it up as often the opening book in a series can be marred by the scene-setting that inevitably must take place. However, it wouldn’t be a priority. Many thanks to Bloodhound Books for an ARC.

Just finished this audiobook and it’s a good introduction to the Cal Nyx series. I read the great reviews for the sequel so I wanted to start from the beginning before I read Book 2. Cal is a park ranger for the national parks surrounding Sydney, Australia. She’s tough and a grinder at her job, a loner but not because she doesn’t have people in her life. Cal just seems to distance herself internally from others and you feel her isolation. The story itself is a mystery involving the murders of two people Cal knows. Because she finds one of the bodies while working in the park, the police spotlight is on her.

What I liked best about this book is Cal, a main character who has plenty of back story to be mined and endless potential for development. Gruff but decent hearted, smart and fearless. But also reckless like a runaway train. I am looking forward to the next books in this series just to see where the author takes Cal. Truthfully, that alone is worth the read.

The mystery was just okay for me. But the toughest part was the number of characters. I wanted more focus on Cal and on Liz Scobie, the chief detective who started to connect with Cal. Instead, the mystery had a long list of detectives and minor characters who had too many pages. On audio, I kept getting lost because of so many different names. Since I was only listening, I had no visual cue/line break to tell me that the pov had changed in the same chapter. The last third was much better, picking up pace as the author settled on Cal and her race to find out the truth. I’m jumping right into The Quarry next.

While counting moths, Park Ranger Cal Nyx stumbles across a decomposed body. When the police identify the remains, Cal is surprised and disturbed that she knew the victim ...and his sister. Autopsy shows he was shot in the back. When the police look at Cal as a suspect, she decides to do some investigating on her own.

When it turns out the victim was wanted in relation to a previous murder, the case takes a complicated turn. And with family issues bubbling away in the background, Cal starts to feel the heat.

But this man isn't the only body to turn up ...and there's still someone missing. There is someone out there who want Cal to quit investigating .. or else.

Cal is a great character, skillfully drawn. She's lost a lot of friends, mostly to AIDS and working in the vast, quiet Australian bush gives her the solitude she craves. This is a well written, tautly paced crime fiction full of action and suspense.

Many thanks to the author / Bloodhound Books for the digital copy of this crime thriller. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

THE BEAUTIFUL DEAD is a crime thriller by author Kim Hunt set in Sydney, Australia.

In a small rural community north-west of Sydney, park ranger, Cal Nyx, finds a badly decomposed body in the bush. When the remains are identified as someone she once knew, the police treat her as a suspect. Cal, a tough and feisty woman, needs to find the killer and convince the police of her innocence.

After further investigation it turns out the victim was wanted in relation to a previous murder, the case.

To make matters worse, Cal has her own skeletons and baggage, and when the police start probing into her private life, she finds herself in a race against the clock to solve the crime.

But the murderer has Cal in their sights, and the clock is ticking…

Catch a killer or do right by her family?

This book starts off slow with many characters and Australian terminology, but quickly speeds up and I was routing for Cal to catch the killer. A good read.

Many thanks to the author and Bloodhound books for my digital copy.

I read the first 30% and skimmed a lot of the rest. I loved the setting of Australia, in and around Sydney but also in the more rural and bush areas around it. There's great descriptive details about locations and unapologetically Australian lingo that I loved. (Although there were times when Americanisms were used, like 'Gas' for Petrol, which is never used here. So that was perplexing.)

But what fell flat for me was no real emotion being conveyed in the writing, at all! There's some heavy subject matters here, and what was so very frustrating was the author eeking so many details out, about who our characters, their pasts, their connection and who the players even ARE.

I understand them trying to project an air of mystery - but at many points it simply became frustrating and just leaves you at arms length from your main characters, in a way that had me uncaring and unfeeling, just as much as it seems our MC Cal, was.
I'm all for unlikable, jaded, complicated people with shady pasts, but the extent this was drawn out, and what very little info we do get - and how even at the end we never seem to know Cal - was far too great for me to enjoy, let alone recommend to anyone else, and I could do no more than skim it in the end. It's a shame!

The blurb of 'The Beautiful Dead' really appealed to me. The book is billed as being perfect for fans of Jane Harper, Fiona Barton and Karin Slaughter. I love their books and so I was eagerly looking forward to finally start reading 'The Beautiful Dead'. Overall, I did enjoy reading 'The Beautiful Dead' but more about that in a bit.
Cal Nyx is an interesting character. She is a park ranger in a rural community not far from Sydney. Cal is a tough, kick ass, independent woman, who is quite happy to work in the great outdoors. She makes a horrific discovery when she discovers a badly decomposed body. It gets even worse for her when it emerges that she actually knows the victim well and she emerges as a murder suspect. Cal vows to investigate the case herself as she feels that that could be the only way in which she can clear her name. Things become even more urgent when the police probe into Cal's personal life. To say that Cal is feeling the heat is an understatement. Cal faces a race against time to prove her innocence and to find the murderer. What happens? Well for the answers to that question and so much more you are just going to have to read the book for yourselves to find out as I am not going to tell you.
I have to be honest and say that it took me a little while to get into this book. For me, the story was a little slow to get going. That's just my opinion though and others might think differently. This wasn't a book that I could read solidly over the course of a day but I did manage to read it over the course of three or four days- this way of reading worked in the book's favour because it meant that I could read a bit, put the book down and think about what I had read. The pace of the book did pick up over the latter half of the book and this meant that the pages were turning quicker and quicker. As the book went on, I found myself getting into the story more and I found myself enjoying the book more.
'The Beautiful Dead' is well written. Kim has one of those writing styles that is easy to get along with and easy to get used to. The author has that ability to grab your attention from the start and make this book stand out from the crowd. Kim uses such vivid and realistic descriptions that if I closed my eyes, I could easily imagine that I was in Australia with the sun beating down on my face and listening to the sounds of daily life going on around me.
In short, 'The Beautiful Dead' is overall a good book, which I did enjoy in the end. I will definitely be reading more of Kim's work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 4* out of 5*.

Another book from the Ngaio Marsh list of 2021 that feels like the start of a series. This one is set north-west of Sydney, Australia, featuring park ranger Cal Nyx, who finds a badly decomposed body in the bush. Identification shows the body to be that of somebody she once knew, and Cal becomes a suspect in the death as a result. The whole thing gets even more complicated when it turns out the victim was wanted for murder in their own right.

Nyx is living with plenty of family complications and skeletons in closets, which takes a probe of her personal life as part of the police investigation into murky territory indeed. There's a lot going on in THE BEAUTIFUL DEAD, perhaps too much, particularly early on as there is a lot of heavy lifting in the scene setting and introducing a cast of lots of characters. A complex plot at its heart, THE BEAUTIFUL DEAD also relies a bit on coincidences and connections to get lots of suspects, and a lot of motives lined up. It works in creating a lot of possible contenders, and a hefty dose of confusion, which was successful at some points, veering towards overcrowded at others.

None of which is all that terribly surprising in a debut novel, with a complicated, complex character at its heart. Certainly less surprising if we're heading into series territory here, for which there is plenty of potential, particularly with such a strong sense of place as well as an interesting central protagonist.

Hard to put this book down. Beautifully paced, Kim Hunt's writing style gives an immediacy to the story line, and her descriptions and dialogue sparkle throughout.
This is an intelligent crime fiction debut from a sharply observant female gaze.
More please!

I enjoyed this book. It is my first book by this author and I will be looking for more. It is a suspenseful-mystery that kept me turning pages fast. The twists and turns had me sitting on the edge of my seat. This is a creative well written story with characters that bring the story to life. Cal finds a dead body but problem is he knows who it is and has become a suspect. I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next. I dont regret picking this book up and neither will you.

Cal Nyx is a park ranger in the Australian outback. While out in the bush she comes across a decomposing body. When the police identify the victim Cal realises that she knew him and decides to carry out her own investigation.

Struggled with this one to be honest. Good enough story but didn’t feel it flowed well when I was reading it. At times it felt like I was reading the second book in the series (it might be) as events in the main character’s past are mentioned but no further information given.

Thanks to Bloodhound Books and Kim Hunter fie the ARC in return for an honest review.

Cal Nyx is someone who you could probably describe as an original Aussie female – quite happy to work in the outback on her own and doesn’t need to rely on men to help her with anything especially cars. As a ranger, she comes across a body in the middle of nowhere, not knowing at this point, due to the decomposition of the body, that she knew the deceased. When the police are called in and start their investigations, Cal becomes a suspect partly due to her friendship with the dead guy but also she has history with the police too. Throw in the death of an old close friend and the illness of another, Cal has to try and find out who is responsible for the killings before she too becomes a victim.
This novel was not the easiest to read if I am being honest. The basic story is good although at times it became a bit convoluted especially with all the police names banded about along with all the suspects too. I am also glad that this was an electronic copy as I quite frequently had to use the dictionary to clarify some of the Australian colloquialisms used. I have read numerous novels set in Australia by Australian authors and not ‘struggled’ with the stories as I have done with this one.
What I did enjoy was the attention to detail in the description of the outback, highlighting just how remote and vast it can be, but also the beauty which can be found there too. Overall I would give it 3.5* as I wouldn’t have liked to have read a hard copy and having to check all the words and phrases that the Brits might not be au fait with! ( I may be called a pedant re this however I have always needed to know all the words!!)

The Beautiful Dead by Kim Hunt has a raw and timeless staying power in the crime genre. Cal Nyx, is a tough and incredibly capable protagnist that is layered with so much authenticity that can only be present when the author knows exactly what they're talking about, in the way that every detail has earned its place on the page.

I also loved the presence of place as a character, as Hunt employs the isolated and unforgivingly beautiful NSW lanscape to give the novel an almost neo-western atmosphere.

The novel is gritty and moving and expertly paced, while also having that key ingredient of humanity behind the narrative. Also, there is a nuanced, blue-collar grit to the writing that perfectly compliments a subtle poetry which I found to be so skillfully interwoven.

I once heard Kim Hunt in an interview swiftly define the reason for the world's fascination with the crime genre when she said, "I think it's the idea of justice, in a world where it's not always delivered."

I think this brilliant and succint definition perfectly sets the tone for The Beautiful Dead.

I was blown away and inspired, and I can't wait to get to the next Cal Nyx book, The Quarry, which is waiting for me back in New Zealand.

Cal Nyx is a somewhat dark character in that she has this innate mysterious air about her. You can't help but wonder about her past and want to unravel all those character layers that make up the armor she has around herself. The mystery plot is engaging, but as a reader, I found that Cal is a greater mystery. The author gives us some insight into her history, just enough to keep me wanting more.

The writing style is beautifully economical. The author uses many short descriptive statements that are to the point, constantly propelling the storyline. There is no redundancy, no irrelevant sidelines that take the reader's attention away from the core plot. It marries perfectly with the character of Cal. It is succinct and straightforward.

This is a good read but it took me a while to get into it.
Cal Nyx, finds a badly decomposed body in the bush and when the Police find out it was someone she knew, questions start being asked.
Cal is desparate to prove her innocence but when more information about the victim comes to light, Cal wonders which way to turn.
She’s also dealing with her own problems but has to focus on finding the killer before it’s too late.
This book got better as it went on and I was keen to find out how it would all come together.
A good read.
Thanks to Bloodhound Books for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

A writing rythm to die for.

This is the first Kim Hunt book I've read and I was captivated from beginning to end. More from this author please! Love Cal Nyx and hope to read more of this character. As an ex Sydneysider it's also a lovely romp through my memories of that city. Evocative, sparing and deftly written. Highly recommend and look forward to more!

Great cast of characters, sharp dialogue and gorgeous descriptive writing locate this gripping yarn firmly in its Ocker setting. A tortuous trail of crime, a damaged protagonist and a queer love story wrap this fitting finalist for the 2021 Ngaio Marsh awards. Would have been five stars if not a struggle at the start to sort the characters out.
