This was an easy read. Predictable but still engaging. It could have been better but for a Golden Age Sword and Sorcery book, it was a fast read and not too heavily bogged down, like some of them can be. Enjoyable but probably not one I'll read again.
Talk about a book to love and hate. Daryn is a cool character. He's a duke, but he's down to earth. He possesses a stone. A stone that allows him to do magic. He's sworn to protect his king. But I daresay his king doesn't deserve it. Well, what about the king's son, then? Prince Gaylon is a spoiled brat, but maybe Daryn can guide him to somehow become king material. Or not.
I hate how this book ended. Just because there's a trope involving character death, doesn't mean it always should be used. And what? Gaylon is actually supposed to be the main character? Really? Sorry, but Daryn is where it's at. Oh, that ending. How I detested it. Some cool concepts here, but several unlikable characters, senseless graphic violence, and a dissatisfying conclusion. Somehow you just keep turning the pages though.
Klare Leseempfehlung.
