Nothing of value in this book. If you’re career driven, which you probably are if you picked up this book, then everything is OBVIOUS. Just in case, I’ve added my spark notes and main points version below:
1. Do less, the obsess
2. Multitasking actually decreases productivity
3. Limit distractions from working hard - only go on personal phone during lunch
4. Start with values, then goals, then priorities
5. Growth mindset - seek informal feedback and learning opportunities
6. Find areas of passion (intrinsic, achievement, creative, people, learning, competence)
7. Match passions with purpose (ability to generate value, reduce harm)
8. Never lose your sense of purpose in helping society and generating good, not just profit
9. Reveal negative emotions about the present and generate positive emotions about what could be. Show (visually appeal) don’t tell.
10. Make them FEEL purpose and they will try harder to help you achieve. Relate back to mission statements, guiding principles, and company values
11. Don’t be a pusher (rely on authority or charisma), pushing pushes people away. Master inspirational, collaborative, and smart grit behaviors(tactful and tailored in the face of opposition)
12. Smart grit - understanding oppositions stance and tailoring argument from THEIR perspective, they confront, concede, include opponents and mobilize people to advocate on their behalf.
13. Teams are more effective when everyone feels they can share their ideas fairly. Advocate, not sell your ideas, and listen to those of others equally. Encourage debate and prioritize the team goal over your personal goals (unity).
14. Disciplined collaboration: establish a business case, craft a unifying goal, reward results not activities, commit full resources (time, money, and skills), establish and enhance trust.
