'Twas: The Krampus Night Before Christmas

Rate this book

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse...

And then the clock strikes thirteen and you wake to hear a thud downstairs. Investigating, you discover that your home has been invaded by two red-cloaked, and bearded, strangers.

Before you know what is happening, Krampus the Christmas Devil has
abducted Santa Claus, and it's up to you to save Saint Nick before Christmas Day dawns and the cruel, birch-wielding, goat-leggéd one usurps the generous gift-giver's position, taking his place forever.

He knows if you've been good or bad, so be good for goodness sake...

Throughout the course of the adventure, YOU decide which path to take, which risks to brave, and even which of the strange creatures you will meet along the way to engage in battle.

Success is by no means certain and you may well fail to complete the adventure at your first attempt. However, with experience, skill, and maybe even a little luck, each new attempt should bring you closer to your ultimate goal.

But whether you succeed in your quest will be down to the choices YOU make.

A fun Fighting Fantasy style choose your own adventure gamebook by Johnathan Green - a man with a *lot* of experience of writing them (and, indeed, writing two books about the history of Fighting Fantasy Gamebooks - the company he initially wrote them for).

Here he's writing for a slightly older audience than the FF books, though this book is not quite as adult as most of his recent gamebooks. It's also a piece easier to complete, but is still a very entertaining romp through Christmas tropes as you go on your quest to rescue Santa from kidnapping by the Krampus. The writing is as pacy and exciting, as you'd hope - with humour and horror lurking within (and some rather fine illustrations).

All in all, a great festive read.

It should be noted there's an unfortunate error within the final encounter - it means it's possible to not be given the stats of the final boss you're supposed to fight ... so when you meet him (you'll know!) keep your thumb in the page, just in case.

Author Jonathen Green’s character assassination is a beautifully told tale of a Santa kidnapping, with you exploring a winter wonderland to save Christmas. The charming blend of camp creatures, moments of humour, and genuine horror draws the reader into a world populated by Christmas tropes and characters, dipping into classic stories to further enrich the tale.

Christmas gamebook suffused with Jonathan Green’s trademark mischievous humour. There’s some beautiful, creepy artwork by Tony Hough (a shame there isn’t more of it but it’s understandable why there isn’t). I just read the book as a story in which I made decisions, with no dice, and winning all encounters and agility tests, etc., and completed it fairly easily in one go. I look forward to exploring the rest of the book in future Chistmases.

'TWAS, The Krampus Night Before Christmas'
by Jonathan Green

This is a lovely hardback book thats also a game, in the style of the old Fighting Fantasy game books. Its a load of fun & hokum as an adventure with lots of little nods to Christmas traditions & myths. The Krampus is the Scandinavian enemy of Santa Claus who you must defeat to win the day.
Great Fun.

Once we got over the complicated rules (there's an option for less complicated one's) we had a great time reading this book. Rolling dice and battling various creatures and making decisions on which way to go when the options arose.

A fantastic Christmas choose your own adventure with a Krampus twist.

It's a role playing game in a choice your own adventure style book. I'm hoping my kids will like this one in a year or two. I'm not as into flipping pages and keeping score while reading.
