Why in this time we are living in not read--when I personally am reading the late novels of Philip Roth on death and dying--a relatively short--13 volumes, which in manga-reading-time could mean a few short hours--a feel-good series emphasizing the virtues of love and friendship? Kawahara and Aruko's series is about an unlikely super large but so respectful and thoughtful guy--Takeo Goda--in love with Rinko Yamato, who thanks him for fending off a subway groper by baking him some sweets. Takeo assumes when he approaches her that he will fail to notice him--that would be typical--and instead see his bff and stereotypically gorgeous Sunakawa, but no! In this one nice people prevail.

Too cynical to read this sappy tripe, you say? I challenge you to check it out. This would be the one, if you want to try a happy contemporary manga shoujo series (typically read by girls, focused on romance). And (almost maddeningly) chaste! I read it with two of my middle school kids (who love it and rush to share it with me--Ooh, you have to read volume 12 right now, you'll be surprised!) and my summer YA graphic novels and comics class with a focus on kick-ass girls, the latter of which you may not generally find in romance. The shy Yamato is not Lara Croft or Ms. Marvel--she bakes!--but when it comes to asserting her own desires, she is not passive. And finally, neither is the shy Takeo.

The series ends a bit too abruptly--we could easily have lingered, in manga-time, two or three volumes, maybe more, in the process to the expected end--but it is a satisfying end, the end we expected and wanted. Maybe the real strength of the series is the close and enduring friendship maintained throughout between Takeo and Suna, though. Sweet! I'm serious!

UPDATE - September 25, 2025

Oh, Takeo Goda, you lovable oaf!!

Almost exactly eight years to the day after the first time I finished this wonderful series, I complete my first re-read. I'm not big on reading anything twice, but I can see coming back to this one a third time in a few years.

ORIGINAL REVIEW - September 23, 2017

While more abrupt than I wanted (Why must this series end at 13 when so many crappy ones go on forever? Why can't we have a whole volume of Takeo taking Spain by storm?), this is a fine ending, especially due to the moment Suna steps up to help Takeo realize he has made a mistake. This is probably my all-time favorite Shojo Beat title.

4/5 🌟 (overall series rating)

this manga is so much fun!! very lighthearted, wholesome and heartwarming. nothing very deep plot-wise and it's more character-driven but it's enough just to have a good time. i literally laughed out loud in each volume. i love every characters' relationship portrayed in this story -- romantic, family, friendship.

as much as i loved how adorable takeo and yamato's relationship is, very awkward and innocent, takeo and suna's friendship is my most favorite thing in this story. it's not very common for a romance shoujo manga to have takeo as the male love interest. he's not the conventional prince charming type with a pretty face. that physically describes suna more, but suna has this role of being the bestest friend and wingman one could have. he's always beside the main couple, sometimes as background, but it's very obvious that suna is the pillar of takeo and yamato's relationship. try to say something bad about takeo and you're definitely going to get on his bad side and receive a harsh 'i don't like you' from him. i can't even begin to explain how much suna has done for the main couple and when there was a part where he has this tiny possibility that he could have his own love story, i sincerely wished for him to have it. but i guess pushing him to have his own romance is not something the author deemed necessary because this is about takeo and yamato's love story. all i want to say is that SUNA IS A GOAT AND I LOVE HIM SO MUCH!!

i love the art style so much in this manga! this made the story so much more hilarious, especially when it comes to takeo. now i want to watch the anime adaptation!

And so this beautiful story ends…and I was so not ready for it to! *cries*

While I confess this wasn't my favorite volume and didn't SUPER love everything leading up to the wrap-up, I very much loved this series! I never expected for there to be a long-distance relationship and how hard that would be on our couple. And I think in large, that's the only reason I didn't love this volume as much as the others because it felt a little too fast in some places as well as was shocked by something Takeo says. It felt very out of the blue and was very much taken aback. So much so, I did feel that maybe it wasn't true to his character? Or maybe it was just me wanting to see that specific situation a little more fleshed out so I could know what led Takeo specifically to say what he did.

However, I LOVED everything with Sunakawa! I loved seeing him try to cheer up Takeo and how he even kept his promise when it came to something said earlier in the series. He really is the ultimate male best friend and will deeply miss his and Takeo's friendship as it has definitely been one of my favorite parts of this series!

Despite what I shared earlier, I did really like this volume and loved the direct ending! I still am in awe of how our trio was a trio to the very end and it was never awkward or weird. (Though poor Suna might say otherwise with the awkward situations he's been in more than once LOL!) It's a beautiful story of first love, but also friendship, and thankful I was so encouraged to read this because it was a very wonderful story that I would highly recommend! <3

Le sigh!! This is the last volume! I didn't even know that going in! Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Yamato and Takeo face their hardest challenge when her family moves to Spain. A long distance relationship is very hard for them. Things don't go exactly as both of them had planned but it ends with an absolutely brilliant, happy ending. This series has just been so squeeeee! Highly recommend it, even to those who don't typically like shojo, like me.

Huaaah... akhirnya tamat juga nih komik.

Eksekusi penyelesaiiannya bagus.

Jadi inget waktu awal nggak ekspektasi apa pun baca komik ini. Ternyata kocaq, apalagi tokohnya jauh dari kata "ganteng", wkwkw.

Mantap. Moga Kazune Kawahara mau buat komik seru gini. Btw kenapa kakak gua ngeship dua cowok dah... *tepok jidat

Re-read 2021: And so it comes to an end, not sure how I feel about it. I just wanted more. It felt a bit rushed. I mean, it was also cute that he did all that, worked so hard, and then when things went wrong decided to do a grand gesture, but it also felt off. Rushed. I would have liked to see at least one more volume. Plus, hello, I want weddings? Maybe a bit of the first year in college? I have been so invested in this couple and I don't want it to end so suddenly.
And as said in my bigger review from 5 years ago, I just wanted to see what happens AFTER what happened in Spain. I mean a big thing was asked, and I wanted to know more. See Yamato be proud of better grades. See them both get accepted. And more.
But in overall a very good and sweet series.

-----------------------------

And so this series comes to an end.

On the one hand I am delighted (and in tears) over this volume, but on the other hand... It feels like a cop-out that we only get to see the first 6 months of them being apart, something happens, and then suddenly it is graduation and Yamato is back again. There was just so much more I wanted to see. For instance I wanted to see Yamato call Takeo when she got better grades. I wanted to see more of her family's reaction on what happened in Spain with Takeo. I wanted to see them get married. I wanted so so much more. And I feel like the author had to stop with the series and just hurried through the ending. :( Which is a shame, these two characters went through so much and deserve a lot more than this hurried thing.

Quite a bit of the volume is again emphasising on the friendship between Suna and Takeo (yes, they do have a special friendship, they are so close). More people are commenting on it being special (when Suna won that prize). But also Takeo studying hard (as he has to) to fulfil his promise with Yamato to get in the same college as her. I just loved seeing him energised and filled with the power of love. He really is going for it and the results are showing. And of course, most importantly... the long distance relationship with Yamato. We saw them say goodbye at the airport, and then we saw them text, mail, skype, call, anything. I had such a laugh when Takeo's little sister disconnected the call. :P But you can see it is eating away Yamato. Whereas Takeo still has all his friends, she is in a strange country without anyone to really talk to, without much support. She is having a much much harder time. It leads up to a point that had me in tears and, yes, shouting at my book. :P I wanted to smack Takeo for doing that, but I was happy that all of their friends there just rallied and went to Takeo. Poor guy, they are way too invested in Takeo x Yamato.

I loved what Takeo did for Yamato (the ring, but also that other thing that was really supersweet and a bit over the top). They really make a wonderful couple, I am happy they found each other.

The ending, well, I already said it was lacking, hurried, and I want to see certain things.

But all in all, this is still a really good series with friendship, romance, hilarious and awkward situations, and a protagonist who doesn't fit with the normal standard for this manga. I would still highly recommend this series to everyone looking for something adorable and funny.

This was my least favorite volume in the series. While I’m glad that we got to see the couple struggling doing the long distance (vs just a time skip), it was pretty annoying. But I did enjoy the last few pages, seeing these kids graduate after reading all these volumes. It was very bittersweet.

Overall, I give this series a 4/5. It’s sweet, innocent and fluffy. It’s a rom com so take it for what it is! Definitely not meant to be taken so seriously. It’s just cute fun!

Oh my god, my tears, what a sweet, wholesome story!!

A major motivation for me reading this was learning more about Suna’s character, because I suspected alternatively that he was asexual or even maybe gay, but that there might be some complications between him and Takeo. They have such a sweet friendship! Ultimately, I found that thread satisfying.

But also I wonder what Suna’s life will be like without Takeo when him and Rinko are married, ya know?

Well, anyways, it was a great read!

Closing out the original run (I've since learned there's one more volume that came out several years after this finished...) with another good volume! Devoted to showing both best bros at work and a sugary sweet yet wholesome romance finish as it started: strong. Managed to squeeze one more bump to overcame, and of course made sure there were some laughs too! (If you thought the saran wrap incident was the worst... XD XD)

All in all I'm very happy to have read this series. <3

My love story is the PERFECT shojo manga to me. It follows a lot of cliche romance beats in a way that really puts some silliness and sincerity into them, but My Love Story is way e than a romance manga. It’s about the love between your friends, love for your family, love for strangers, love for your partner, and love for those who hurt you.
One of my favorite pats of this series is how much we get to see the growth and friendship of Takeo and Sunakawa. It’s just as much their love story as it is Takeo and Rinko’s.
This is one of my top comfort anime and I am so glad to have read the full story. My only wish is that some of the latter plot tensions had been given more attention and time.
I love My Love Story and I can’t wait for my next read through!!! <3

Vol. 8 ★★★☆☆
Vol. 9 ★★★☆☆
Vol. 10 ★★★☆☆
Vol. 11 ★★☆☆☆
Vol. 12 ★★★☆☆

Not gonna lie, I'm disappointed by how rushed this volume is. On top of that, it's just so cliché. This series starts off with a bang and ends in a whimper; the earlier chapters are absolutely fantastic and make the later ones extremely lackluster in comparison. Had the series been able to maintain its momentum, it would've been a solid 5/5. As it is right now, I'd give it a 3/5.

A lovely ending for a great story! I’m so glad I picked this manga, it has everything I like: a healthy relationship between the leads, a wonderful friendship that doesn’t get tossed away in the name of romance, loving families, the portrayal of a nice and sweet male friendship, the realistic depiction of the many challenges that come with growing up… for a moment it felt like being back in high school. I hope I can read more stories like this in the future!

*TW and ratings for the overall series:

TW: groping, sexual assault, misogyny, slapping/hitting, running away.

Takeo is the purist form of positive masculinity. I want to be him when I grow up. Sunakawa is the sweetest (and very headcannon) ace. Their friendship and constant care for each other made me tear up many times.

The love story was cute, some predictable tropes here and there, but Takeo's wonderful character made them a bit less predictable and more wholesome.

I love this series so so much. I can't believe I've actually reached the end. It has been my happy series since I started it, and I will never forget these characters and how incredible they are. I'm so happy at the ending, for how wild it was and in-character everything that happened was, and I'm just so happy this is how it ended.

I've been holding off reading this final volume of My Love Story!! as I wasn't quite ready to see the story end. This has been such a delightful series. As much as I enjoyed Takeo and Yamato's love story, what I most enjoyed in the story was the friendship between Takeo and Sunakawa.

I'm kind of giving my rating of the entire series here.
This is a very cute series. Some parts were very relatable. If you like highschool romance I'd recommend this series.
I did feel like the ending of the series was slightly rushed, but I don't hate it.

a pretty straight forward love story, not too heavy or overly emotional, also I don’t think most people gather just how FUNNY this series is, the visual gags at times made me cry

A safe recommendation, I’d even say a great beginner rec for just anyone 🩷

I consider this series a breath of fresh air in a world that is suffocating. What signifies My Love Story!! is the sense of loyalty not only between lovers but also between family and friends. This series simplicity in delivering brief lessons in gratitude and love is heartwarming that touches the readers without trying so hard. I was recommended to read this by my younger sister and as I'm not into romance so I thought that I'll end up dropping it but I stuck with it until the end. I'm also sure that I will miss it deeply.

Note: My rating is for the manga series as a whole.

Over all as a series, My Love Story!! was enjoyable. But it isn't without it's problems. I know part of my issues stem from the cross-cultural translation. Like...in America, we tip toe around it sometimes, but for the most part: teens hook up. It's fine (...well, okay, maybe 'fine' isn't the word I'm looking for). But most of the last, like, four volumes of this series were all "I have these feelings for you and they're weird and I want to do things to you!" and god forbid a girl reciprocate having those feelings too.

BUT, all that aside, I think MLS!! was a great twist on your average shoujo manga. Having the leading male be anything but your average pretty-boy was refreshing. Good job on the part of the mangakas!
