Rate this book

Holly Ward is a natural-born mystery solver. She spends her days as a waitress in her mother’s restaurant, and her spare time scuppering criminals. Trained from a young age by her Detective Grandfather, she sees all puzzles as a challenge and loves to try and work them out, leading to all sorts of mysteries and adventures.

This collection of stories is an introduction to the Workhouse (Restaurant) Mysteries series, and of course our cozy-mystery solver Holly: her background, her upbringing and how she came to be the crime solving sleuth she is today.

Quaint and charming are words that come to mind when reading this. I've never been much of a cozy mystery reader, but Holly is a charming, enterprising young lady whose growth it was a pleasure to read.
This is a collection of short stories, taking us from Holly's birth to a couple of cases where she shows her intelligence. I especially liked the stories The Robbery and To Catch a Thief.
Holly and her boyfriend are sugary sweet, their connection a little too instant for me, but as Holly becoming a sleuth is the point of these stories, I can overlook that sugared sweetness. And they ARE cute together, I'll not deny.
Some grammar mistakes jump at me, missing words etc., but nothing to truly distract me.
Also, I'll say I learned a few things reading these quaint little stories!

If you like gentle Cozy Mysteries, then The Workhouse Mysteries are for you. With a restaurant as a backdrop, they tell the stories of a young 18 year old girl, Holly, who is inspired by her Detective grandfather to solve puzzles and become a sleuth.

This particular collection is a good introduction to Holly and her background, as well as giving a taster of the mysteries she uncovers and helps the police resolve.

With an element of romance as her boyfriend, Samuel, a professional footballer, accompanies her on many of her adventures.
