Rate this book

Reluctantly returning to London for yet another Season, shy Nora Hamilton has nearly given up hope that she will ever find the love match she longs for. After all, the one man she does harbor feelings for—her closest friend, James—has made it perfectly clear he views her as just that: a friend. With James traveling half a world away and Nora’s father pressuring her to marry for wealth and status, Nora is forced to set aside her desire for love and accept the future she has always dreaded. Until James returns unexpectedly and Nora’s feelings once again rush unbearably close to the surface. Determined to save what is left of their friendship, Nora ignores her own heart and allows herself to be swept up in the London Season, soon finding herself the object of two very different gentlemen’s affections. Though she should be thrilled, both men come with a glaring fault: neither is the one man who holds her heart. But there is much more at stake than heartbreak. When long-kept secrets are laid bare, Nora must face the fears that have plagued her all her life and decide what true love is worth.

A well written and engaging Regency romance

21 year old Nora Hamilton is under pressure by her father to find a husband during the season in London. But Nora wants to marry for love, not status and money. Furthermore, she already loves James, a childhood friend whose feelings towards her appear to be purely brotherly.
But time is running out. Nora’s sister can’t go out into society until her older sister is married.

Should she marry for money and position or defy her father, fight the conventions and marry for love?

Thanks to the author, Covenant Communications and the NetGalley for my copy.

This was much more interesting then a plain regency romance. The Characters were complex and had a history. I loved how the author revealed the secrets and as they came out things were able to go forward in a good way. I hate secrets, they never are a good idea and I liked how the story showed that. Sweet Nora was so caught up in everyone's ideas of who she was, she was stiffed and hurting. I love that this book showed that love can help another find themselves and their truth. This book was very unpredictable, I did not know where the author was going. From the first pages I was pulled in and just wanted Nora to find her answer. The ending was so lovely! Barker is a great author and I will be following her for a long time.
Thanks for the early copy:}

A delightful read detailing being presented for the Season in high society.
The rules are rigid and I could definitely understand the anxiety young women faced. Way too many rules, how about just acting like yourself and not putting on airs?
I know I could not act this way, it's just not me but this is what's fascinating about reading this as it's so different from our daily lives now a days.
Secrets roam the halls of the great house and sadness has touched lives in a way the main character doesn't understand.
There is a bit of an uncertainty in love and who Nora will end up with as her father pressures her to marry for status and wealth. What is marriage without love though?
Will Nora stand up for herself and marry for love or do her father's bidding?
Interesting characters, I am glad we don't live in this time period though.

I adored this book! Really, really loved it. It was written in such a charming voice...it was humorous and sweet with just enough romantic angst to make it the perfect page turner. I happily read it in less than a day...and the only unhappy moment was when I realized it was over. :)

Warning: devastating warm fuzzies

Look, I’m not an emotional reader, and by the end, this had me inner ugly crying. Like, end of Mary Poppins “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” level of tied with a bow perfection. Plus a next milestone epilogue? Something in my eye.

And the thing is, I don’t usually go for childhood friends romance, especially with a first person single POV where the heroine is intensely, resignedly pining in silence. Plus, going from the title, I love secrets in my romance, but “suitors”? Don’t really want anyone distracting from our main couple. Yet, I can’t be the only one that thinks “I know I love this author, let’s see if I can be made to love this”. And not only did she make me love it, but Ms. Barker had to make me descend to borderline HEA blubbering after being constantly, personally attacked by the characterization of oblivious, unassuming, introvert queen Nora. She is me. I am her. Not even wallflowers, more like wallferns. She put herself out there for childhood love and class difference neighbor, James, and he disappeared for six months sailing to far off shores. Now he’s back, just as a sensible marriage is being forced on her, and she’s attempting to maneuver as best she can since being firmly friend-zoned. Their progression tried my patience in the best way. I was a little too invested at how things would resolve and then that third act took such a fun, intense turn. Ugh, reach for what you want, my little wallfern. This was so good!

Poor Nora! I really struggled with the first part of the book because Nora feels hopeless and resigned, and the author did a great job of connecting the reader to her emotions- so I was feeling sad and frustrated as I read. Things picked up when the setting moves to London and Nora begins to develop hope for another plan for her future. I found the evolving dynamics of her family interesting and I appreciated that we got to see the more complex layers of her parents and especially her father, who is not the villain he seems to be in the beginning. Nora has a strong bond with her sister and brother, and it added a nice element to the story. Nora also evolves and grows through her experiences and she is a much stronger person for it by the end, where she refuses to let the secrets stay hidden so she can grasp the future she wants with both hands- not just who she marries, but a warm and loving family.

I don't read a lot of romance novels, but now and then, I enjoy a Regency. I had the opportunity to receive a review copy of Secrets and Suitors from the publisher, and the book came highly recommended, so I decided to give it a try. My assessment: the high recommendation was accurate; Secrets and Suitors is a very well-written and worthwhile read. Joanna Barker weaves a multilayered story centered around a likable main character, Nora, who has a realistic combination of strengths and flaws. Though at times I became impatient with what felt to me like her cluelessness and denial regarding the man she loved, it was credible given her situation, her insecurities, and the expectations of her family and society. I appreciate it when a romance author gives the relationship between the main characters a solid foundation, and Barker does this extremely well. In addition, one of my favorite parts of the book is the progression of the relationship between . . . Never mind; I'm afraid of giving spoilers, but a layer of the story that runs underneath and beside the romantic plot was particularly beautiful and satisfying. I enjoyed how Barker caught me by surprise several times--characters don't always do the expected thing, and those twists were great. Romance readers, you're going to love this one.

Whenever I see Joanna Barker's name on a book, I know I will enjoy reading the book. Secrets and Suitors was no exception, it was a sweet regency but also dealt with secrets that forced Nora and her family to bring them into the light and not hide from the pain that these secrets had created. I loved James' strong and nurturing character and his inability to give up on Nora.

SECRETS AND SUITORS is a story that is a delight to read from the first page to the last. Readers won't be able to resist falling in love with the heroine, Nora, with all her insecurities, shyness, and bravery, and wish for her to find happiness. With an endearing family dynamic, friendship, and a sweet romance, this is the perfect read for sweet historical romance fans!

I'm a big fan of friends-to-romance stories and this one did not disappoint. Nora was such a reserved character who lacked confidence in herself, but under James influence she literally blossomed before my eyes. I loved their friendship and teasing. I also loved how well the author conveyed feeling through looks and a touch here and there, besides words. The chemistry was definitely palpable. There was a bit of a love triangle, or maybe square, here which is normally not my thing but it worked and made sense to me. There was even enough of chemistry between Nora and one of the suitors that I felt the story left a bit of a question as to how things might have turned out, making me question that maybe Nora wouldn't end up with the person I thought she should. I enjoyed seeing Nora develop as a character, as well as how her friendships developed, and the way her family joined together and the changes there. This story pulled emotions from me with the decisions these characters faced and the realizations they came to.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This story was full of so much heart, with lovable characters and an endearing plot. Highly recommended!

Oh my, what a lovely Regency friends-to-lovers romance the author has written. When a young woman hides behind large ferns at balls, it's never a good sign although there's usually a good reason for her doing so. Nora Hamilton has several reasons--she's shy, hates socializes at balls, and her father's determined to marry her off to the ever socially correct, but dull Mr. Weston. I think the main reason she was hiding is she missed her best friend James, whom she can't seem to admit that she loves.

James Allen left England six months ago to help his family's sugar plantation in Jamaica, but Nora thinks he left because he doesn't care for her as she cares for him. His unexpected return during the ball throws her off balance and leads her to come up with a foolhardy plan to attract someone to offer for her so she doesn't have to marry Mr. Weston. Through it all James is there for her, but will Nora let him back in to her life?

I loved this story. All the secrets of the characters that guided their actions had me wondering what would happen next and I was surprised a couple of times. I liked Nora but there were a few times I wanted to Gibbs slap her to shake some sense into her. I loved James and can see why Nora couldn't seem to forget about him. These two were perfect for each other.

I'm so glad I didn't live in Regency times. I love to dance but all the strict rules would've had me hiding behind a potted plant too. This is a clean romance.

Thanks to NetGalley and Covenant Communications for allowing me to read this book. All thoughts and opinions expressed in my review are my own.

Note: I loved the story so much I bought my own personal copy.

Just as in her previous novels, Joanna Barker weaves romance thread by thread until the whole stunning tapestry is revealed. Nora is an unlikely heroine; she is shy, reserved and uncomfortable in the many social situations her parents have thrown her. Truly the only person other than her siblings she can be herself with is her childhood friend James. But his rapid departure to Jamaica leaves her floundering in a society she never fit in. She is determined to find the best life for herself and her siblings but the choices she makes to provide for her brother and sister may steal her own chance at happiness. In the end, she must decide whether or not to stand up for herself, and what she is willing to risk for a chance at true love. I read this in a remote cabin sneaking away from my family every chance I could get. Imagine my frustration when my phone died right at one of the most climatic parts (it was a highly anticipated kiss scene guys, I mean, imagine it!) I had to retrieve my charger, but to do so would mean walking past people who would inevitably notice I had been missing. Never fear, I managed my task quite discretely and was able to quickly get my phone powered up again. I love Barker’s books, they are always filled with heart, growth, and a hard-earned happily ever after. Secrets and Suitors is a must-read for Regency fans.

I can't imagine what it would be like to live in a time and place where young men and women were supposed to marry someone who could give a better social standing or had a large dowry.

Nora is faced with this dilemma. Her father has picked out her suitor and she is to fall in line and obey. Her head cannot reconcile this with her heart. She tries to look at Mr. Weston objectively, but he doesn't compare to her childhood friend. In order to buy time with her father, she strikes a bargain. Now, she needs to figure out a way to extricate herself from a delicate situation.

This book is a pleasure to read. I love how Joanna Barker is able to pull me into her story. I had great empathy for the characters and loved the descriptions. Regency Romance is one of my favorite genres because of the pageantry, societal expectations, and love finding a way in spite of roadblocks.

I really enjoyed reading Secrets and Suitors! I could feel all the warm fuzzies and the sorrow, disappointment, family bonds and healing! I felt urgency with the characters and was drawn to keep reading to find out what would happen next! There was a question from the very beginning that I knew the answer to but wanted to find out what had happened that formed that question! There were so many secrets. I am ever so grateful I did not live in those times! Just putting that out there!

Nora and James have been friends since childhood. James knew Nora better than I think Nora knew herself. He could pry anything out of her. He knew when things were not right with her. Last summer he left to his plantation in Jamaica for business and left Nora devastated. She had thought he loved her but he had left. She is trying to move on. He returns and is ever there for her again and Nora’s heart can’t seem to get over him. But Nora has been forced to marry Mr Weston by her seemingly uncaring father. Nora then notices that Lord Worthington has noticed her. He is attentive to her and she thinks that maybe she can get him to propose to her so she would not have to marry the quiet and humble looking Mr Weston.

Meanwhile James who is in need of an investor into his plantation has also been invited to Lord Worthington’s grandmother’s home for a visit along with Nora who had fallen ill and needs the country air and has also become good friends with Lord Worthington’s sister. James is hard to let go of. I wouldn’t let him go either. The author writes him so kind and caring and really a wonderful man that I want him too! Hehe! But Nora tries hard to be herself and get Lord Worthington to be hers.

Nora and James are a match if ever there was one! He would grab her hand and just pull her somewhere and the way the author wrote it, I could feel her hand in his and her feelings over a simple act. She reacted every time he showed up in a room! How difficult it must have been. I forget that it is just a story and not real! I enjoyed learning all these secrets everyone has kept and how it impacted soo much of the story and you don’t even know they did until the secrets come out! I love watching people grow. I also love watching people do stupid things as well. Keeps the book interesting! Haha! And stupid things were done!! And you don’t really know who Nora will end up with till the end after all the secrets are out!

If you like stories of families who grow, people who guard their hearts to protect from getting hurt, rakes, secrets, tree climbing, little brothers who adore their older sister, lions, running away from home, families who make mistakes but learn to fix them, intimidating people, deceiving people, and doing what is right and kind and fair and full of love than this story might be for you. As for me, it is on my shelf to be read over and over!

I felt so many different emotions while reading this book. The greatest of which was joy. I was completely immersed in this story and really found myself enjoying every moment of it. There were plenty of emotions that tugged on my heartstrings. Especially emotions that had me feeling resigned and sorrowful for Nora, our heroine.

Then there were emotions that had me wanting to tell her to wake up and shake off her doldrums and see what was right in front of her eyes.

Then I had emotions of anger towards other characters in this story. How could they do that???!?!?!?!?!

Then I would find myself circling back to the emotions of joy and happiness and love and swooning.

All my frustration and wanting to tell characters to straighten up worked perfectly...they quickly learned and changed.

I have loved all the books that I've read by this author and this book was no exception. It might possibly even been my favorite of hers. If you haven't read anything by her, you're in for a real treat. If you have, read her other books but not this one, you're really in for a treat.

Find yourself immersed into the ups and downs of Nora's world. Her family, her friends, her suitors, her impressions, her mistakes, her joys and her sorrows. So much goodness packed into this sweet read. Especially the love story. Oh my! Definitely one I loved!

Content: Clean. A moment of peril but nothing graphic.

I received a copy from the publisher, Covenant Communications, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

Another delightful read from Joanna Barker, with characters that will entice you to their plight and your heart almost immediately. It is enlightening to get a glimpse at how hard society would have been for someone who had anxiety & struggled in social settings when for those of the higher set depended upon it entirely to make their match.

This story written solely from the point of view of Nora, is a tender look inside her thoughts, experiences & expectations as the oldest daughter, out now for 3 yrs and her Father is ready for her to marry. This book grabbed my interest right in the very first chapter, and it carries all the way through. Though occasionally repetitive, Nora seems to constantly battle the same struggle over and over. The build up and the tension that comes as time passes, is what creates, what I think is one of the best written tenderly expressed scene towards the end. It has all the feels, and is oh so sweet. Of course there’s much more to come after that, and will leave you abandoning everything on your to-do-list until the very last page.

One of the things I love most about Ms. Barker's novels is how her words have the power to completely transport me into the story!

Poor Nora Hamilton has been in love with her best friend James since childhood, but unfortunately, he doesn't return her feelings. Though I rooted for the pair to end up together, I also enjoyed reading about her adventures with the other suitors. There were times I wished the secrets would be revealed, I will admit that this only added to the story's tension and had me staying up late to see them exposed. I loved how Nora grew throughout the novel and how her personal growth deepened the relationship with her and James.

Which brings us to James. Swoon. Oh how I love James! I can't say too much without giving things away, but he was so deserving of Nora's love. I loved every second he was on the page and I know other readers will too.

This is a fab addition to Ms. Barker's collection and I can't wait to read more from her. Highly recommend this sweet regency romance!

There is a magical quality to Joanna Barker’s writing. It goes far beyond her excellent historical research or her beautiful descriptive prose; it pulls upon our emotions, drawing us in until we finish the last page with a happy sigh. Secrets and Suitors is a masterfully written story of hurt and healing, of families and forgiveness, and of finding lasting happiness.

I adored this book and absolutely fell in love with the story. This sweet and clean Regency romance will have you aching for what the protagonist Nora experiences, and cheering her on as she grows and learns the confidence she needs to make her own happily-ever-after.

The title, “Secrets and Suitors” is such a good description for this book. There were so many secrets throughout, both with suitors and with those closest to Nora, and ones Nora had to keep herself. I really came to love and admire her as a protagonist. She is often thought of as shy and quiet, but to read from her first-person perspective, we get to see how kind, brave, and selfless she really is.

James was another favorite character. He definitely made for a fantastic swoony hero! His kindness and compassion added a great depth to his charming and easy-going personality.

I also really loved the family interactions throughout the book. There is so much more to this story than I ever thought before reading it. To see Nora’s family life and some of the realities of the time period and how it affected them all was fascinating. To see broken hearts mend had me tearing up at times.

In all, I cannot say enough good things about this book! I truly enjoyed myself and can’t wait to see what this author writes next!

3-3.5⭐️ decent little regency romance. Not a huge stand out but solid. Nora the FMC was likable other than being obtuse about the MMC being in love with her. It drive me crazy the length that the author dragged it out. Honestly this was the reason for the lowered score. I loved Joanna Barker’s last book I read but this one wasn’t for me. I will definitely read other books by her.

I've enjoyed Joanna Barker's books before and I was excited to see that she had a friends-to-something-more romance coming out. I was not disappointed with Secrets and Suitors! It was the perfect, swoony, historical romance read.

Nora is entering her third season and her parents are pressuring her to marry. She has some prospects, but none of them measure up to the man she's always loved---her childhood friend, James. But James is in Jamaica and doesn't return her feelings anyway. Nora is trying to move on with her season and bow to her parents wishes, when James suddenly appears. All her old feelings come rushing back and maybe, just maybe, he might return them. But secrets come to the surface and Nora is forced to make a choice that could ruin any chance she would have with James. Do you see why it's an un-put-down-able book? Who wouldn't be turning pages as fast as possible to see what happens?

I loved the characters in this book. Nora is so adorably introverted, but trying valiantly to participate in the season. She loves her sister and brother and James truly understands the person she is inside. But outside forces seem to be combined against them, and Ms. Barker draws out all the feelings on this twisty-turny journey to love. I loved the setting, the secondary cast of characters, and even the villain was well-drawn. But my favorite character was James. He's such a sigh-worthy hero and readers will definitely be rooting for James and Nora to get their happily-ever-after! Definitely one for the keeper shelf.

Secrets and Suitors is another standout regency read for me this year. I have always had a weak spot for romances that begin as best friends and this story was so well done that I had a hard time putting it down. Nora is shy and dreads society parties and social groups but the ease of her friendship with James pulls out her wit and bravery. James as a best friend is exactly as he should be: kind, supportive and a bit dashing, but not quite in the same social standing as Nora. An unknown source seems to keep them apart but that doesn’t mean their romance doesn’t continue to grow even after Nora tries finding love elsewhere.

I felt the heartache of these characters. Their silent moments/conversations were those that will claim your attention. I always base a good book off character interaction and banter. (Spoiler alert: it’s excellent). It wasn’t predicable as some proper romances tend to be and there are many different depths to this story that kept me guessing at how it would end. I loved seeing Noras growth as a person as she discovers who she is and where she wants to be. My first from Joanna Barker but certainly not my last!

How sweet was this book?! I really fell in love with both Nora and James (through Nora's eyes). Nora's family is so important to her and that is the motivating factor for most of her decisions and filled the majority of this story line. Difficult circumstances and bring out the best and the worst in people and this book does an excellent job of highlighting that. Nora finds herself on a bumpy road, trying to navigate her family's expectations and desires, her third London season and her conflicting feelings for the different men in her life. Poor Nora and her tender heart, trying to do the right thing all the time, but getting knocked down repeatedly. She was so easy to root for and I found myself silently cheering when she spoke up, defended, acted and followed her heart. I love when I feel invested in a story, it's characters and it's outcome! I loved this one.

Johanna Barker is one of my favorite Regency authors and I adored her newest book, Secrets and Suitors; after The Truth About Miss Ashbourne, it’s my favorite by her. This was such a beautiful romance between Nora and her dear childhood friend, James.

Nora was such a wonderful character with an incredibly tender heart, whose worth and remarkable traits are easily overlooked by others, including herself. I really connected with her character, as well as her struggles with her insecurities and shyness. Her growth throughout the story was fantastic and incredibly well written. She not only comes to develop confidence in herself, but gains the strength to stand up for herself, choose her own path, and follow her heart. I loved how the more she came to see her worth, the more she could see how much James truly cared for her. It was beautiful.

The plot was interesting as Nora tries to navigate her family’s expectations and desires, as well as her conflicting feelings for the different men in her life as she strives to do the right thing, all while fighting the feelings for her childhood friend whom she dearly loves, but whom she believes doesn’t love her in return. Their romance was adorable, beautifully written in Joanna Barker’s lovely style and developed at a perfect pace. I absolutely fell in love with James. He was such a kind and fun character who not only perfectly understood Nora but was utterly devoted to her. I adored watching them come together for their happy ending.

All in all, Secrets and Suitors was another beautiful romance by Joanna Barker, and I’m already so excited to read her next book!

Joanna Barker has a way with writing Regency romance. I love the way she writes her characters, and her plots are amazing!

I loved Nora. She’s the character that the reader gets to know in this one. The reader sees everything through her eyes. Nora is the type of girl who has always done what her parents want her to do. But she doesn’t want to anymore. Her parents want her to marry Mr. Weston, but she doesn’t want to. Nora is the type of girl to make a plan, and she plans to sacrifice herself on the altar of marriage to Mr. Weston for her siblings. I loved Nora!

I loved the way Nora’s life wasn’t perfect. Nora’s parents seemed really disconnected from their whole family for a large part of the book. That’s due to some secrets that Nora didn’t even know were being kept. And Nora loves her neighbor, but he doesn’t appear to love her back. There were so many secrets in this one. I loved finding each and every one!

I loved everything about this book! It made me happy to read it.

THIS WAS SWEET.

BLOG || INSTAGRAM

I’ve made myself a mission to read Joanna Barker’s backlist and was happy to check this one off recently! I adored this friends to lovers romance. It’s just sweet. And I love sweet so dang much.

I do wish there would have been less suitors and more James, but that was my only small tidbit. I loved the character growth in Nora and learning how to be shy and strong and that those are not mutually exclusive traits. Seeing her Father and family fight to find peace and common ground again was wonderful. I love a tight family that may struggle, but you know the love is there.

A short and tender heartfelt romance and one that I really liked on audio!

Overall audience notes:
- Historical Romance

this one was really underwhelming. i did enjoy some bits but they alone cannot supersede my frustration about the other problematic elements in this book. the main character, nora, was as basic and plain as white bread.

the reasonings behind why certain things played out the way they did and particular events that happened prior (to the story) were so damn predictable and cliche. they reminded me of those old 90’s low budget movies with the macho overly possessive fathers who would offer large sums of money to the hapless suitor to leave his daughter’s life simply because he, the suitor, was ‘beneath them’. ummm, the stone age just called and they want their sub-par quasi-sexist tropes back.

also nora’s lack of backbone and unwillingness to step up and take charge of her own life infuriated me right to the core. 🌚

This book was so good! It didn’t seem like your typical Regency romance. I loved James and Nora! It was so easy to get hooked into the story. I just didn’t want to put it down!
