I’ve never met anyone who remembers their birth, but I remember mine. I dream about it all the time. Why? Because today, October 10, 1997, will be the seventh time it’s happened.
Eleanor Blackwell is turning seventeen and although excited about her birthday, she already knows what it will bring. At seventeen Ellie will meet the boy of her dreams, get swept off her feet, and fall in love only to be murdered a year later, right before her eighteenth birthday.
How does Ellie know this?
Because this isn't the first time she's lived this story… it's the seventh.
With each rebirth, Ellie finds herself in a different time period but surrounded by the same souls of both her friends and enemies leading her to the conclusion that in order to change her fate she must unravel the secrets those closest to her are hiding.
Piecing together the clues spanning over 200 years, can Ellie alter events enough to change her death this time around? Or, is she cursed to repeat the same mistakes and return once again?
Camille Funk is the author of the paranormal, historical romance: The Return Series, which has been read over 2 million times online.
Born in Singapore, she grew up in Taiwan where, without any access to TV, her love of creating stories began. She attended Simmons College in Boston, MA, receiving a BA in Education and English before traveling overseas and working as a teacher in Myanmar, Gabon, and Hanoi. She loves collecting stamps in her passport, and usually moves to a new country every 2-3 years. Together with her husband, she raises her two children all over the world.
Originally read the whole series on Wattpad which means it was ages ago. So I don't really remember much of it. But I still remember how it made me feel. I haven't read anything similar to this plot ever before. Such well executed work. Great story telling. I personally might be a little biased because this was one of the first books that I read but still I am positive there's nothing like this currently out there in the market.
I love the story line but it was annoying that there were so many grammatical errors. I am rooting for Ellie and Levi and I can’t wait for the next book!
One of my favourite series to this day and reading it again after years still hasn't changed my stance on it. There are a few grammatical errors but I enjoy the pace of the story, how well written it is and of course the overall plot in general. I love the time jumps too, they're never confusing.
One of my absolute favorite reads since I was a teenager will always me my num we one pick! Can’t wait till she finishes putting all of series for sale so I can own them all!
What I Loved: The concept of reincarnation and remembering your previous lives was so captivating! I loved the way Camille Funk wrote this story. She focused on the first life of the main character and the 7th life, or the current life. The story was being told at the same pace for each life, switching between the two lives every other chapter. This writing style allowed the story to be revealed to the reader expertly. I LOVED it and I cannot wait until the next book comes out!
How I Felt: I was so absorbed in this story. The characters were written with such detail, I really felt like I knew them, but I also had mistrust for so many of them! This is a mystery, as the main character is murdered in each life, and I kept pointing a finger at a different character at every turn in the book’s road. The ONLY downside of this book was that it is a series, so I have to WAIT for the next book now!
Content Warnings: Some sexual scenes without explicit details. Some swearing.
To Read or Not To Read: Readers that enjoy mystery, romance, YA, and a pit of fantasy would really enjoy this book!
What’s This Book About Anyway? I’ve never met anyone who remembers their birth, but I remember mine. I dream about it all the time. Why? Because today, October 10, 1997, will be the seventh time it’s happened.
The Return by Camille Funk Eleanor is living her 7th life. She remembers each past life from birth to death, which happens after her 17th birthday each time. She just doesn’t know who murders her.
Each lifetime is surrounded by the same souls as the previous, just different bodies and names, but they don’t remember. Eleanor has tried so many different ways to break this cycle, but she doesn’t know why it is happening, and she has not been able to change the ending in any life.
In her first life, on her 17th birthday, she meets Levi and they fall madly in love. Life has other plans for them though, causing problem after problem and then she is murdered and she starts life number two.
In this 7th life, we pick up the story just as she is approaching her 17th birthday. Eleanor narrates her 7th life, gives us background on each of the people that follow her from life to life, and reveals things to us only when she is ready, making the story so mystifying. She also narrates her first life, where we get to experience everything that happened to her for the first time. Between the two stories, some mysteries are solved for Eleanor, but is it enough for her to stop this cycle and live, happily ever after with Levi?
I was provided an advanced readers copy of this book. I am leaving my review voluntarily.
