A Space Marine Heroes novella

The Word Bearers have come to corrupt the shrine world of Luminata, and all that stands against them are the noble Blood Angels – but with the Black Rage gnawing at them and enemies everywhere, can the sons of Sanguinius prevail?

READ IT BECAUSE
Discover the adventures of Captain Donato and his Terminators as Rachel Harrison weaves a tale of brave warriors facing impossible odds – a story of true Space Marine Heroes.

THE STORY
Once an idyllic imperial Shrine World, the planet of Luminata has been corrupted by an ancient and hated foe, its inhabitants driven to madness and butchery by the demagogues of the Word Bearers. The Heretic Astartes have come in force to desecrate the holy world and its most sacred treasure: the chalice of Sanguinius, bequeathed to the people of Luminata by the primarch’s own hand. Such an affront cannot be borne, and Blood Angels Captain Donato and his archangels descend on the world, determined to cleanse the stain of the traitors. However, the Word Bearers are not the only threat to the noble warriors, for with each step towards the stronghold of Dark Apostle Tur Zalak, the siren song of the Black Rage grows stronger. Caught between the blades of the enemy and the flaw in their blood, only by recovering the chalice and killing the heretics will the angels themselves be saved.

Rachel Harrison delivers another fine slice of 40K fiction, authoring a strong, moody meditation on The Flaw & The Thirst that mark the Blood Angels chapter. Harrison’s writing is so vivid because it deals with complex emotions, the types of feeling most 40K fiction sweeps under the rug. It brings depth to (what would otherwise be) a predictable story and allows the reader to actually dial in on the characters. All in a slim novella too. Her work thus far marks her as one of Black Library’s finest authors.

Thirst. Rage. It must be resisted.

I hate Word Bearers. But so do the Blood Angels! Cultists, heretic Astartes, warp spawn, the Angels battle for a sacred relic and to save a world. But what is the legacy of Sanguinius?

I dunno how Rachel Harrison does but she continues to excel, imo at least, as a writer under Black Library ever since her first short stories were published.

This was a perfect balance of being plot and character driven, which is pretty unique in the Warhammer stories I've read. I'm so excited to read more from this author!

I loved this novella. It had me in its grip from the beginning. I loved the use of back and forth chapters between the past and present. Cool story that made me more interested in the Blood Angels.

Picked this up on the strength of the author's excellent Severina Raine stories and it didn't disappoint.
