Deeper into the shadows. . .

The paranatural community isn’t done with Alex. She’s been summoned to the fae court, and she's got her hands full trying to prepare. But her date with the fae will have to wait. There’s been a death at the gallery, and the man she hoped would be a part of her future is the prime suspect.

Bitter enemies pull her into the middle of a paranatural war for territory that has her dodging police, swords, teeth, and claws—not to mention the truth. The deeper she digs, the more secrets she uncovers, and the less certain she is about the innocence of the one man she wanted to trust.

She thought she was done with murder and monsters, but she’ll have to enter the belly of the beast if she hopes to save her friend.

COURTING DARKNESS by L.R. Braden is the second book in The Magicsmith supernatural suspense / urban fantasy series. The female protagonist, Alex Blackwood is a metalsmith creating works of art in Colorado after a fragile peace between the Fae and humans. She’s been summoned to the fae court and needs to learn a lot about proper etiquette and the fae world as a whole. When a dead body is found above an art gallery and a friend is implicated, her life gets even more complicated and her studies suffer for it. Along the way, she learns a lot about herself, her friends, secrets, enemies, relationships and the Fae.

Alex is a likeable main character who is loyal to her friends and is definitely someone you want to succeed. Her goals were clear and her motivations were believable. However, I wanted Alex to be a stronger protagonist. The main secondary characters are getting more developed, but new characters were introduced as well. They did enhance the story and they added to the story rather than detracting from it. Hopefully, Alex will become an even stronger protagonist and the secondary characters will show even more growth and depth as the series develops. The prose was well-written, engaging, and entertaining. The plot was engrossing, fascinating and action-filled. The world-building was good, but I wanted a bit more.

Overall, the book was suspenseful, entertaining and fast-paced. I am looking forward to reading more in this fantasy series. If you enjoy urban fantasies with a lot of action, then this book is one you may enjoy as much as I did.

Many thanks to Bell Bridge Books, Inc. and L.R. Braden for a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley and the opportunity to provide an honest review. Opinions are mine alone and are not biased in any way.

Alex Blackwood is torn between the human world and the paranatural one. As an unregistered half-fae with unusual powers and connections in high fae places Alex needs to stay off the radar. However, when her boyfriend is accused of murder and she has full blooded fae visiting her unannounced her life starts to get even more complicated that it was already.

I think my journey with Alex is going to end at the book. It isn’t because I hated it; it’s just I didn’t exactly like it either. I just slogged through it for the sake of completing the book so I could write a review. It’s a shame as I think this has a lot of potential. I love an urban fantasy with a variety of different creatures, sadly, for me, this potential wasn’t exploited.

We have a motely bunch of paranatural creatures mainly fae, vampires and werewolves all of whom are friends of Alex. However, it’s hard to think of a single distinguishing characteristic of any of them. They are all very bland and seem superfluous to the story, they added numbers not personality. Then there was the romance between Alex and James which seemed to come out of nowhere. Although there was a hint of it towards the end of book 1, there was no build up, we never saw them together, the author told the reader rather than showing them. Which made it completely baffling when Alex was willing to sacrifice not only her life, but that of her friends to attempt save him from an enemy that she had no chance of defeating.

Although this book wasn’t awful, it was just bland and needed to focus more on character development. I’ve given the series 2 books to hook me, sadly that hasn’t been the case so this is where my journey with Alex ends.

Some spoilers below for the first book in the series.

Alex is a halfling, half-fae in a word where the humans and the fae have just brokered an uneasy peace after a brutal war. She has found out that she is related to one of the Fae Lords and has been summoned to Court to make her curtsey (as it were) where she will be quizzed on fae life and possibly challenged by rival fae. Oh, and added to which she and her friend Sophie were attacked by a werewolf and Sophie is now a werewolf being cared for by the local pack.

I thought all of the above was enough plot for the second book, but no, Alex's sort-of boyfriend Simon has been accused of murdering a young woman in his art gallery and we are suddenly drawn into yet another group of non-humans.

I'll be honest I found all of the different characters a bit confusing - Alex seems to have befriended a member of every single fae species, most of whom hang around her cottage on a regular basis but none really have enough personality to distinguish them from each other.

Alex did have a touch of the TSTLs, when your BFF who has just turned into a werewolf and can't be allowed out unsupervised calls out of the blue and invites you to go clubbing do you think that's normal? If she says her alpha says it's fine do you believe her? Alex does! Also she is consistently rude to the fae sent to teach her what she needs to know about her grandfather's court. Granted Hortense is a snooty entitled woman but does Alex have to behave like a petulant child?

Overall, once the story came together it had all the drama and action that could be required but it felt like too many characters have been introduced too fast and we just need to consolidate the characters and their relationships a bit more.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

Courting Darkness is the second installment in author L.R. Braden's The Magicsmith series. The story picks up where A Drop of Magic left off. Protagonist Alex Blackwood is a metalsmith whose works are often inspired by the mood that she is in thanks to her magic. Oh, yes, she's also part fae, but without all the worry about metals burning her like full blooded Fae. Alex's Grandfather gave her a magical boost to her powers, but it also marked her as kin. To make matters worse, she's been summoned to the Court of Enchantment which meets in only a few short weeks!

I love the second book in a series so much. You enter with enough background to enjoy the characters and world as more information is given to you.

In this book, Alex has a lot on her plate when determining if her boyfriend-hopeful is a drug-dealing killer gets added to the mix. As she tries to sort things out while dodging the challenges sent her way by her fae heritage, we learn more about the paranatural world she inhabits.

About 1/4 of the way into this book things get going and they keep picking up speed. I enjoyed the ride and was left wanting more of course!

I received this novel from net galley and the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you!
This novel was a great sequel to the firs novel in the series! More action, more secrets revealed, more trouble, more mystery. Alex Blackwood needs to prepare for her visit with the fae and uncover more of her magical abilities, but it is not going that well and that is the least of her problems. The man she thinks she might love has cancelled dates and now is in trouble, for a dead body was found at the gallery. Her trust in others is waning and she has kept secrets from people she has known for years. New potential allies approach and more enemies arise. Alex is loyal to those she cares about and will risk her life for them. Kai, her fae housemate, has sworn to protect Alex and get her ready for the fae court. But with enemies on all sides, both human and supernatural, Alex will need everything at her disposal to protect herself and her friends. Alex's choices will have repercussions and lead her deeper into the supernatural world. Looking forward to the next novel in the series!

I didn’t take long to become totally engrossed in the second book in this riveting series. Ms. Braden is an exceptional writer in her characters, her plot, and her interesting world building. In fact, I really loathe one of her characters, and I really want to yell at him so very much, a mark of a great writer to get the reader so invested. One thing though is that this book took a darker turn than the previous one which I didn’t mind at all. Anyway, this is a great urban fantasy with a myriad of characters to keep the reader entertained. I stayed up past my bedtime to finish, something I don’t do very often. I can’t wait for the next book; maybe we’ll go see her grandfather! Give this author and this series a try; you’ll love them! Highly recommend and I received a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

"Courting Darkness" is book two in the "Magicsmith" series by L.R. Braden. Alex is still learning about the magical world and is being trained by Kai. I liked all the action packed in this book. Alex is such a great main character, and I enjoyed being sucked into her world again. Braden knows how to keep you wanting more, and I look forward to continuing in this series. I need to see what happens next with Alex and what else she will learn about in the magical realm.

Alex is finally putting the pieces back together after finding out everything she thought she knew about herself was wrong. But when her boyfriend stands her up again, she has had enough of his blow offs and erratic behavior. On top of that, she is concerned about her newly turned werewolf friend, trying to learn everything that is Fey for her upcoming forced trip to the Fey Reservation, manage her new paranormal house guests and keep her human friends in dark about her true self. Can Alex survive this next batch of challenges?

Keep in mind this is a series that needs to be read in order so make sure to grab book 1 first! Wow, did things just get extremely complicated, and just when I thought I knew this world L.R. Braden created, I was introduced to a new conflict. Between finding out more about the faeries, we are introduced to SO MANY different kinds of supernatural creatures, just randomly popping out at Alex (and me!) I felt like I needed a chart sheet to keep them all straight but I love that about the book, the ability to surprise me with the creatures and the twists and turns

One thing is for sure now after reading the second book in this series is that Alex can take a beating. I swear, both of these books spent at least half the books in physical battles and getting the ever loving crap beat out of her. I wanted to hire her a bodyguard to protect her for the inevitable beatings I knew were going to happen, but she basically has one (cough cough Kai) and still manages to get into some terrible situations. Courting Darkness was one dangerous, exciting, stressful and action-packed encounter after another and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I think I finally caught my breath when I reached the end of the book and there was a tentative resolution.

Overall I am ever so much enjoying this series! The Magicsmith is exciting and unique, with complex world building that I feel like is just getting started, yet at the same time makes me connect emotionally to Alex's struggles and personality. I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves gritty urban fantasy, every kind of paranormal creatures and a headstrong, stubborn main character who refuses to back down. I can't wait to continue the series!

Intriguing Urban Fantasy

Fast-paced, action-packed story that will keep you turning the pages. Relatable characters with a little extra than the normal human. With each book in this series, we get to know Alex more as she grows and learns.

I’m loving this series and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good Urban Fantasy.

Alex is busy preparing for her upcoming appearance at the fae court. Kai is still there as her teacher, and Chase is spending more time in his more human form around her. Alex and James are dating, but he is cancelling a lot of their dates, and is being very mysterious. Alex is pulled into paranormal fights once again when people start disappearing around James.

There is constant action, and while Alex has developed some skills of her own, she is still sadly outmatched by pretty much everybody around her. Luckily, she has some pretty powerful beings on her side, willing to put up with her smart mouth.

I liked it when James turned out to be not-human, because it explained much of his previous behaviour, and makes him a more suitable potential partner for Alex. I still didn’t really feel the love between Alex and James. In this story Alex expressed more of her ambivalent feelings towards James, and the two of them went to extraordinary lengths to save each other. Maybe it was because we only see the story from Alex’s viewpoint, so we are only privy to her thoughts and her interpretations of James’s actions.

In some instances it was a bit annoying to just have Alex’s viewpoint on the story, especially the fighting scenes. Because she is the weakest, she often gets sidelined during the physical fights and usually only wakes up later after all has been said and done. And then her partners in crime don’t want her to know the details of the aftermath, so they keep it to themselves, which means the reader also doesn’t know what happened exactly.

I did enjoy the story overall, and would love to read the next installment.

I received an advanced copy of the book from Netgalley to review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The paranatural community isn’t done with Alex, she’s been summoned to the fae court so she has hands full trying to prepare. But her date with the fae will have to wait. There’s a death at the gallery and James is the prime suspect and bitter enemies pull into a paranatural war for territory that has her dodging police, swords, teeth and claws – not to mention the truth.

Alex is once again caught up in things that she had no clue about in this riveting and exhilarating read. The fascinating alter earth world continues with non-stop thrills, adrenaline pumping action and breath stealing suspense that keeps readers on the edge throughout. With surprising twists, magical battles, plenty of opposition and a spirited and determined Alex whose loyalty can’t be questioned this story has it all including all the turbulent emotions that come with all the excitement that seems determined to turn her life upside down.

The fast paced plots has Alex training and learning how to navigate the fae courts with help from Kai but also from a new fae player that causes a bit of frustration and angst. Then the PTF is gung ho to catch Alex and her fae friends, and Alex learns the big secret that her would be boyfriend has been keeping has put her right smack in a deadly and dangerous grab for territory and a game changing magical artifact. Once this book is begun, readers can’t tear their eyes away as they become one hundred percent immersed in all the excitement of Alex’s life.

I received a free copy of COURTING DARKNESS (The Magicsmith Book 2) by L.R. Braden in exchange for an honest review. Alex’s debut into the paranatural community caused quite a splash and brought her some notoriety. As a result, her grandfather has summoned her to the fae court and has set the date for her presentation; it’s soon, too soon. Burdened with tutors force-feeding her libraries of information needing to be digested in a few short weeks, Alex is, of course, pushed into devoting most of her time to resolving vampire political disputes. Vampire shenanigans make Alex’s boyfriend a prime suspect in a murder investigation. Apparently ignorant of or immune to the threat of fae retaliation, those same vampires repeatedly attempt to kill or capture Alex because of her relationship with her boyfriend. Meanwhile, no one in the supernatural community wants to help Alex or her boyfriend because it’s not their business or their problem. Alex is determined to remove this distraction from her studies even if she has to do it all by herself.

I liked both this book and the first in the series. I rejoice in the return to urban fantasy without having to wade through all of the harem/reverse harem/polyamory/other kinkiness erotica garbage. I recommend this book and this series to all fans of good urban fantasy.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring. -- I remove previously rated books to not give a false positive or negative, if books IMO got better or worse as the series progressed.)
(I do not read reviews before I read a book, I like to go in with an open mind.)

1 star for world, that was interesting.

And another liked series bites the dust.

IMHO Alex (aka MC, for most of this) went completely downhill in this book.

3 days into the new year and already two series in a row have gone from a 3 or 4 star rating to a do not continue. :(

First time read the author's work?: No. I actually gave book 1 a 3.5* rating.

Will you be reading more?: No.

Would you recommend?: No.

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked or DNF

I wish we could add 0.25 / 0.50 and 0.75 of stars to better show feelings towards books

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

The second book in this series does not disappoint. Alex is struggling with her fae heritage as the time narrows where she will have to go to court in faerie. When a murder hits close to home, she becomes embroiled in werewolf and evil vampire dealings. Loyalty is everything. Alex can't catch a break in this book. Action packed and bloody gory, new characters and old flesh out this ride. And a ride it is. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book from Netgalley

First let me state that I received an Advance Reader Copy, (ARC), but this in no way influences my review. I always leave an honest review.

Holy shiznet!!! This is the second book in this series and it's just as good, if not better than the first. Alex is getting stronger in her magic, but her life is becoming more messed up. This story had me fearing for her life a few times. I can't wait to read the next story. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up

I highly recommend this newly published author! This is a great series with many paranormal types found within the characters. I found this second book in the series even more exciting than the A Drop of Magic, the first book in the series. The third book, Faerie Forged, does not have a released publishing date at this time.

L. R Braden has done it again with Courting Darkness- the second installment of the Blacksmith series. As soon as I opened the pages, I felt like I was returning home.

Our MC Alex Blacksmith really shows growth in her character both emotionally and physically. Courting Darkness allowed Alex to gradually accept her fae side while opening herself to the possibility of love. I thoroughly enjoyed the honesty of Alex's emotions and the way L. R. Braden has penned her as a fighter and a believer makes for an interesting, entertaining and dynamic read that really stands out among the paranormal/urban fantasy genre.

Always at the thick of things, Alex is unwavering in her loyalty and support for those she cares for which was a far cry from where we first met her in a drop of magic with her "Don't care about anyone" approach.
I love that she isn't afraid to get her hands dirty and that when it comes down to it she is willing to do anything to protect those she loves.

Alex has always felt more realistic to me than most paranormal characters. She isn't the strongest, fastest, prettiest or smartest nor does she possess any insanely kickass supernatural powers. Instead, she has a quiet strength, with an unwavering resilience that helps her utilize the resources she has, combined with her sharp intellect to maneuver the curveballs that are constantly thrown her way. Alex is not infallible, she bruises, she bleeds and she hurts just like everyone else and I think it makes her more real and approachable as an MC.

L. R Braden definitely stepped up in her game in Courting Darkness as there was no shortage of action, action, action. There were tons of fight scenes, drama, mystery, zealous magic haters, suspense, and murder scenes that had me on the edge of my seat.

Once again, Braden has woven an intricate story that focuses on our MC but also allows room for our favorite supporting characters to grow and even included some new additions that only served to enhance the overall story. I was very intrigued to see the gradual incorporation of the faerie world and the introduction of rules, customs, etc which masterfully set the stage for upcoming events.

Courting Darkness was beautifully written, keeping in theme with Braden's style which I highly appreciated. Even in the darkest scenes, Braden made the whispers of death sound poetic and eloquent. I don't want to drop any spoilers but I sense a love triangle of epic proportions for the next installment of the Blacksmith series. I look forward to reading more Alex and Braden's strangely quirky dental hygiene descriptions.

Thank you to L. R Braden, Bell Bridge Books and NetGalley for providing me with an arc of this amazing book. All views and opinions expressed above are my own.

Please come say hi and read my review at The Bookdragon Nomad

*Thanks NetGalley for providing this copy in exchanged for an honest review.

Courting Darkness picks up shortly after the events of A Drop of Magic. Alex’s life will never be the same again. Being named as blood-kin by the fae Lord of Enchantment is no luxury. Alex must prepare to make her debut in front of the court in a month’s time. Unfortunately, that means pulling all-nighters and cramming as much fae knowledge, court etiquette and swordsmanship on top of learning to harness her newfound gifts.
As if her plate wasn’t full enough, her romantic life already has its own set of problems. James’ closely guarded secrets are starting to come to light and Alex is further pulled into a dark and macabre world she may never be prepared for.
Wasting no time jumping right back into the thick of it and introducing some new foes along with new along the way. The dynamic between Alex and her new roommates, Kai and Chase, is quirky and fun. A welcomed reprieve from the stress and anxiety Alex is plagued with. Torn between two worlds, she must re-discover her place in the world and who she can trust. Along for the ride are some new faces including an adorable and headstrong, teenage- shifter fae. And a cranky, stick in the mud, old fae who’s sure to make you chuckle.
The romance between Alex and James felt like it came out of nowhere at the end of the first book and in Courting Darkness, the chemistry is still absent. Their couple status being more of a statement that they’re in a romantic relationship without actually seeing them interact as a couple.
With mystery and intrigue driving the story, the plot line was well thought out and not once did it seem to drag. Highlighting the dangers of racial prejudices and how fearmongering can put evil people in leadership roles, sets up a dangerous combination for the next book The darker, more gory elements also added to the appeal and it was wonderful to see Alex starting to trust in herself and fight for her morals along side her new friends.
Courting Darkness is well worth a read if you are looking for a modern fae story with self-growth, political themes and mystery.

Everything in Alex Blackwood’s life has turned upside down since she learned not only of her existence as a “halfer,” but also the nature of her grandfather in the realm of Fae. Despite her skills and lineage, however, not everyone is willing to accept Alex into the ranks of the fae without a challenge. So, Alex must absorb as much as she can about fae culture from her new roommate Kai before she officially visits the Court of Enchantment. A crash-course in fae history would be enough of a challenge on its own, but every day brings more nefarious creatures to Alex’s doorstep who actively arrest her forward momentum. With each new danger, Alex improves her skills and understanding, and she must step far outside of her comfort zone to find a way to fit into this new and intimidating world.

This second in the Magicsmith Series begins shortly after the first book ends, and winter has descended upon Alex’s mountain home. While she has become more skilled since the first book, she is not out of the woods as far as danger is concerned. Luckily, her kind personality and previous good deeds draw others to her who will protect her to the bitter end. Alex spends a great deal of time learning about the fae, and the reader vicariously collects this information alongside her that enhances their understanding of Alex’s world. The overall pacing of the story is well-done, keeping readers engaged in the plot from one dramatic scene to the next.

Though Alex is in her late twenties, this series will speak to mature young adult readers as well as adults who enjoy paranormal storytelling and urban fantasy. Werewolves, vampires, fairies, and more all appear in Alex’s life, and they coexist among humans in a very recognizable iteration of Boulder, Colorado. Colorado natives will appreciate the many references to locales in the Denver/Boulder area, and it is enjoyable to imagine a magical community living among everyday humans. Occasional strong language and violence are found within the narrative, serving to enhance the delivery and justify the high stakes Alex faces. This well-written and action-packed story is an excellent addition to library collections for new adults.

I received a copy of this book from the author and I chose to leave this review.

It was a breathless thrill ride being back in this world. Holy cow, this part was intense. Things really took a turn with James, and then another turn, and then another. The twists were delicious. The action parts were so thrilling. I mean edge of your seat fights that were so bada$%. Alex is awesome. She's not only able to hold her own but she doesn't have the usual emotional drama female leads are depicted with. Yes, there are complicated relationships but they don't cripple her, heck when push comes to shove they don't slow down at all. I want to be her when/if I grow up.

Some threads had to take a back seat because of the off the rails war that burst to life and that's perfectly fine by me. However... I must must read the next part starting umm right now because I am dying to see more of Chase who didn't play a huge role in this part, the new teacher, who made a move that endeared her to me, and I just can't get enough of Kai.

Start this series at part one because there are a lot of moving parts, but do start this series. It's well-written, with characters you will love and plots that are fast moving and complex.

3 stars - Courting Darkness was action packed and kept my interest, but I did have a few issues with the direction the story went this second book. I was completely on board with the Fae bits in the previous book and at the start of this one - the leading lady Alex is half Fae, she is keeping her heritage secret and there is a human anti fae movement in the world (and the police are wrapped up in it) and trouble keeps finding her and bringing her to the attention of the police . Plus, since she's just discovered her heritage and has a very important relative who is now aware of her existence, she is getting Fae lessons in fighting, etiquette, magic and history in preparation for going to the Fae Court and meeting her Fae relatative. But then vampires. I am not a vampire fan and she suffers some yucky stuff at the fangs of bad vamps when she stumbles into their territory. So this part of the story worked less well for me. Hopefully, though with the way things played out, we'll be back to the Fae storyline in the next book.

ARC via NetGalley courtesy of the publisher, this is the second book in the series and I believe that book 3 and 4 are also available now.

This book reminds me of the Merry Gentry series, but that may just be because that was the first series I read with a strong female lead and the fae. Just without all the steamy romance and court politics, so I guess there really aren't that much alike.
I was super nervous coming into this book since I have not read the first book in the series. I was worried that I would be lost. The first chapter does a good job about catching you up in the world, to a certain extent and making sure you know the important cast of characters. While there were some aspects of the first book that were mentioned throughout, I was able to follow without having read it.
I really enjoyed the action and exploring the relationship that were built between Alex and the other character. The story was able to keep me hooked, without the romance that I have been craving lately. I see a lot of potential for that as the series continues. Overall, this was a very entertaining read and I think I will pick up other books in the series.

I was very excited to have the opportunity thanks to the publisher and NetGalley to read the second book in the Magicsmith Series by L.R.Braden. I thoroughly enjoyed my introduction in 'A Drop of Magic' to Alex Blackwood, an artisan who can do remarkable things with metal in particular iron, despite her half fae heritage. This book intensifies the changes occurring in her life partly as the result of discovering who she is related to in the fae world as well as dealing with problems that her love interest, James, is facing in his life. All-round this is an intriguing series that has a number of very interesting characters who are part of Alex's world - I really found myself holding my breath at times as misunderstandings happen and violence ensues. I found I was very invested in Alex finding her way through safely and hopefully bringing her friends with her. Absolutely a series worth engaging with - just do start with book one as it builds Alex's world and those significant to her.

This is a fun read and a good start to a new series.

Alex Blackwood a kick-ass (YA'ish) 'half fae' heroine fights to solve a crime. Helped by Malakai, a fae Knight and Chase her house cat/ hot protector. And then there is James her Vampire lover (not that there is some romance. But it was mentioned). So you get enough of the fantasycharacters in this book. A Drop of Magic is a medium paced book to read. Here and there some fillers but interesting enough to give you areal page turner. Together with the amazing world building and interesting plots an exiting first book for this Urban fantasy Series.

Overall, I found A Drop of Magic to be an entertaining read that left me smiling. Not a read for the die hard paranormal Romance lovers but I will definitely be on the lookout for more from L.R. Braden, and would absolutely recommend this book to all Urban fantasy fans or anyone else looking for a fast paced fun read. I look forward to the next novel in this series.

This is book 2 in the Magicsmith series. I would recommend reading book 1, A drop of Magic before starting this story. Alex is studying for her appearance in FAE court and the vampires and wolves seems to be working against her. Alex is only part Fae and has been learning about her powers. Now she is drawn into the war of the paranormal community with a body being found in the gallery run by her sometimes boyfriend James. Good story with a big mix of creatures helping or hindering, depending on your point of view. Books 3 should provide some answers soon about Alex's visit to the Fae court and her grandfather. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

As book one in the Magicsmith series ended Alex was coming to terms with her halfer status and excited about a growing relationship with gallery owner James. As book two opens her appearance in the fae court is looming. Alex is trying to learn as much as she can about fae etiquette and politics so she will live through the visit. Adding to her stress, James has been canceling their dates without excuse. Alex tries to maintain her normal life, but her connection to the paranormal world keeps getting in the way. This book is full of tension and danger and the action is nonstop. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys urban fantasy.
