When Jaimie Fletcher’s twin girls are snatched from under her nose, she faces a race against time to save them from a deadly fate.
It was a day children dream of — dodgems, roller coasters and enough candy floss to rot every tooth twice over. But after Jaimie’s daughters are kidnapped in broad daylight, it becomes a nightmare that drags her to the edges of hell. Jaimie’s frantic search forces her into an uneasy alliance with her ex-husband and a stranger with a violent streak. But as her world falls apart, she realises a horrible truth. The kidnappers don’t want money, notoriety or revenge, they want her children. She is faced with a terrifying dilemma — how do you bargain with someone who already has what they seek?

Andy Graham is a British author currently living in the Czech Republic. His books have been described as 'dark fiction with a twist of hope'.
There are two main collections. The Risen World Thrillers are a set of scary supernatural stories that can be read separately or as a series. The Misrule is a series of slow-burn dystopian thrillers set in a future Earth similar to our own. There is also a short collection of tales that explore the creepier side of life, death and the undead.
Outside of writing he has done various things - worked as a musician, osteopath, and teacher. Now, most of his free time is taken up with two young kids who have too much energy for their own good.
This book grabbed me by the throat from the 1st chapter where the twins are kidnapped by some shady characters in a terrifying and surreal scene at a fair (always creepy places for me). Mother Jaime is insane with grief, however, I was put off by her lashing out at police and security personnel who were only trying to help her. She immediately lost empathy points from me as a reader.
The author kept me guessing with twists and turns as each character’s backstory emerged and intertwined. The plot was full of overlapping stories and surprises that kept me engaged and reading fast. The final chapters were so tense and action-packed I couldn’t put the book down.
I would have given the book a 4 rating if I had one character I could relate to or consider a protagonist, but they all had such deep flaws I found it impossible to root for anyone other than the little girls. A story packed with villains left me with no one to root for as I pretty much wanted everyone punished.
Andy Graham totally outdid himself with A Demon Risen. It is his best book ever! At least in my opinion. The characters are so real that you will be checking over your shoulder to make sure they aren't with you. The action is so intense you won't be able to stop reading. If you like books with a demonic tone, you will love A Demon Risen.
Preface: I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review Actual rating: 4.25 stars Explicit content: Sex scenes, exploration of intense lust, violence, death, harm to children
This author snuck up on me again! I'm terrible with names, so I often select works to review from authors I've read before without realizing it. This marks round 3 for me and Andy. Interestingly, this novel actually contains a character from his novella, which I read previously. It took me a little while to catch on, but certain little details reminded me of that novella, and then I looked it up, and here we are! That's actually a little problem with the novel, but I'll get to it in a minute.
Overall, this was a really engaging, gripping story! The central characters were believable (if not always likable), the plot was gripping, and there was tons of suspense. I found the two threads of whether they'd save the kids in time and whether Mike would be redeemed or sink back into his old habits the most interesting. Everything to do with Our Destiny and the imagery of it was also super good. This author has a habit of sliding into a dreamy vagueness in his other books when he gets into the really weird stuff, which makes the action and such difficult to track, but I never felt that here - there weren't any times where I felt too lost or confused by what was happening, aside from maybe the wax monster fight, which was a little messy (no pun intended).
But, by far the best thing about this novel is our villain (and I really don't get to say that often). The Bride is amazing. Her design is awesome, her motives are super spooky and cloaked in mystery, and most of her dialogue is pretty good (admittedly, some is kinda cheesy, but that's the kind of villain she is). I adored her (and wanted her to die a horrible death, of course). She's easily the best part of all of this. Any moment she was on the page, I was very happy.
Overall, the characters in this are really strong. I didn't like Jamie from the get-go - she's extremely negative and snippy and judgmental - but she grew on me in time as she developed. The array of baddies were all unique and stood apart from each other very well. I wish we'd gotten more of Abdi, since he comes into the story a little late and then disappears for a while, which is odd since he seems so big and important. And, as mentioned previously, Mike's development was really good, and kept me guessing as to which side he'd land on for the entire novel.
That's not to say this story doesn't have a few problems. The biggest, in my opinion, is the reliance on the novella for your understanding of one of the main characters. Most people don't read a lot of novellas, myself included; it was just a happy accident that I happened to review the novella that kicks off this series. If I hadn't, a huge part of Mike's character would have been lost for me, because this novel doesn't really go into much depth as to who he was and where he came from. There are allusions to his relationship with Raph and the stuff with his mother(s), but it's left very vague. I imagine if I hadn't ready the novella, I would have been really confused by all that, especially when so much of it contributes to his choices in the end and the culmination of his character arc. I definitely think there should have been more summarization of the novella in here, to give new readers a more concrete understanding of what was happening.
In all, I was pretty pleased with this read. I'm not sure if it's my favorite of the series, as the second was pretty good (though very different) but it was an enjoyable read. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone with an interest in gothic fantasy/horror.
I had read the first book and wasn't that keen on it but this one was much better and really enjoyed it.
Going from the kidnapping of Jaimie and Gareth's twin girls to going into hell (literally) to get them back.
I felt more for Mike and connected more with him than I did with Jaimie as she became a little to much for my liking but the storyline itself kept me interested.

Wow!!!! What a ride I have just been on reading this one! This is undoubtedly Andy Graham at his best with this one. Well written and engaging plot and story line. Great world building to go along with all this. Characters that are so well fleshed out and relatable. I was on the edge of my seat reading this; absolutely relentless with the suspense, twists and turns. Highly recommend reading.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Normally books like this I’m all over when an author takes us from our mundane world and crafts a world that involves the supernatural. Unfortunately it may have to do with the beginning of the book when the children are taken from Jaimie. I totally understood her hysteria and the paralyzing fear that now consumed her world. What was a bit much for me was the pure vitriol that came out of her mouth towards many of the people around and the intensity of it when it was directed at her ex-husband Gareth. I found myself instantly not liking her and never really warming up to her throughout the story.
To be honest the only person while I won’t say bonded with I had more of an interest in was Mike. Not sure why for most of this book it came across as an overacted bad TV drama with some of the dialogue and the almost caricature likeness of the bad guys, the people helping etc. It was nice at the end when Jaimie and Gareth final forgive each other. For me I was never immersed in the story nor the characters.

This is a really scary, horrifying and compelling story that absolutely had me biting my nails/on the edge of my seat/shaking in my boots! I could not put this book down until the end and then, I had trouble sleeping. I have children myself and this would be my worst nightmare!

So intriguing and mysterious. Written well which keeps the attention to the point of not wanting to put the book down. It was a little bit slow to start but it didn't take long to ramp up and have you right in the thick of it all. Really good book 😊.
