Having fallen slightly in love with this series in book one, this second instalment doesn't disappoint. Yes, it suffers from some of the same continuity bugbears and Wynter seems to have become even more blind to obvious plot line cues, but I still really enjoyed it for what it is.
We pick up the moment after The Source of Magic: Thieves & Demons: An Epic Fantasy Adventure ended: Wynter and Alexander are safe, but now with Lucian free and no idea about a) how to explain surviving a fall that should have killed them without revealing forbidden demon assistance and b) what the heck was going on up in Reverie that caused the whole demons/Viviane/massive fracture in the floor debacle to begin with. Wynter wants some answers about the conspiracy Dorian's had her chasing, and knows she can find some clues in the forest before they head on back up. Prince Alex, suspicious but just about trusting, decides to help. But in unravelling lies of seventeen years past a few of Wynter's own come undone. When old secrets with dire consequences come to light, who can she trust: the demon who hates mages, the prince who hates paupers, or the noble who manipulates everyone he meets?
Having established characters and relationships in the first book diving back in was a breeze. I loved how the friendships and frenemyships evolved - snarky Lucian, the opening up of Viviane, even flip-floppy Alex eventually worked out how to be a proper character. Tati, Jessa, Dorian; everyone got more fleshed out and I loved them for it. The romance element isn't in your face or full of hormonal gushing, which is always a plus. It's almost a side note(!) to the real character developments. Wynter does seem to have lost a bit of savvy somewhere though, being clueless about plot points people are practically spelling out for her.
Now the downside was that like book one, it's obvious there are two authors. Not in terms of style (except that one used a lot of commas in odd places, the other favouring the semi-colon), but in terms of content. Sometimes things were broken up mid-scene indicated by *** breaks, and in those seconds passing characters could flip from one way of speaking to another, forget something they'd just been told, or know something they couldn't have known until the end of the next chapter. Wynter's "I have magic!" followed by "I'm a fraud, not a mage!" repeatedly was another issue, as if it hadn't been decided what attitude she'd have. Do not get me wrong, I really loved this second part, but I honestly believe that if it had a thorough editorial review to check for typos and oddities like that it would shine alongside traditional published young adult fantasy novels.
There is also one scene including an act of mutilation/torture near the end that set my nerves jangling with how nasty it was. Luckily it was over quickly.
The pace is just right, neither too slow nor too fast. The twists are more laboured and obvious here, but no more so that your usual young adult story. I really enjoyed making those new discoveries along with them as well as confirming that I had been right all along about others - I think that's one of the joys of obvious plot twists for seasoned YA readers.
It might not be perfect, but it's magical and fun and different in how it plays with the YA tropes. Book three, here I come!

I enjoyed this book more than the first in the series. It starts exactly where the last left off and continues developing the mystery of the source of magic, including how Reverie floats. And once that secret is reveled, those that know it are now in a perilous position because the masses cannot know the secret.
But the secret of magic is not the only secret being kept. Wynter has many secrets and lies that eventually unravel and redefine not only who she is, but also her place in the world. While I still think she is a bit too trusting, that trait has really become a hallmark of her character and fits well in this story. It no longer comes across as naïve; in fact this trait was summed up nicely at the end of the book when Wynter finally acknowledged that because she has been abused her whole life she was desperate for anyone to love her. I do like how she was able to display just a little bit of backbone towards her Uncle at the end.
One criticism I had of the previous book was that it contained many YA troupes... and this book does continue those story arcs. For instances, many of the secrets - once finally revealed - were easily deduced if one had been reading carefully. For example: Or of course: Some of these "secrets" just seemed too overlooked by Wynter, especially that second one, and had she used her head she may have been able to avoid some unpleasantness.
One bit of unpleasantness Wynter experienced was her classmates thinking she was weird and always talking to herself. When in fact, she was talking to Lucien. But I didn't understand that... there were times he would react to her thoughts or emotions.
Overall, I enjoyed this addition to the series better than the first and would like to see where this story goes. The books are easy reads and perfect for the summer.

Wynter and Alexander fell from Reverie into the Scraps and survived thanks to the help of Lucian, Wynter's demon friend, now it was up to Alexander not to tell on her and her ability to talk to,, and control demons. As they walked through the Gardens, Wynter realised what a massive gap there was between the three social classes of the Kingdom and she wanted to just get the job she was hired out to do to a satisfactory end, so that She, Briar and Stirling might get the opportunity to live in comfort and get taken out of the dire poverty which was the Scraps.However things in Reverie where not as easy as they seemed from below, and danger lurked everywhere for Wynter. A rogue mage was unleashing demons on the academy, and she felt they were after her for some reason. She had become embroiled in the political machinations between the Nobles, the Royal Family and the Council and it seemed as though Dorian was using her as bait! Can Wynter, Alexander and their friends save Reverie from falling, the lives of the people below as well as the Academy? Another thrilling adventure full of magic, demons, villains, a budding romance plus a few huge surprises throw in too, as well as an ending which begs for the 3rd book to be read yesterday!

Great story...Oblivious, idiotic Female MC
I loved the story behind this book and the characters are okay. There’s nothing unique about the relationships between all the characters and the story was very easy to predict.
I especially didn’t like the female MC, Wynter; she is ignorant and weak. She often doesn’t see very obvious connections and she is very easily manipulated.
I would recommend only if you were in a book funk looking for a mildly entertaining story.

This picks up where Source of Magic left off. Wynter has saved Alexander and herself from the fall with the help of her demon friend, Lucien, from her sword. Now Alexander knows more of her secret and she fears he will turn on her. The term starts up again and someone is trying to kill Wynter and her friends and there are secrets galore.
I don’t like Wynter’s naivete but also her denial that she has magic. She acts as if she is just someone from the poor area and she isn’t. We get to see this play out more and more as we find out more about Wynter herself. This is the one dynamic that drives me batty. She has no confidence in her abilities with magic. She is also way too trusting for her own good for someone who came from a rough area.
The story itself is action packed and interesting as secrets about where magic is from starts to unravel and her and her friends go on the quest for this truth. I love the relationship with her and Lucien. They are a fun yet complex relationship that has you smile especially with the banter between the two. Her relationship with Alexander is great as well.
I like this one more than the first book because I like how it is more complex and gets more into the relationships of the characters and the dynamics of magic itself.

I’m really enjoying this series, it’s simple enough but it’s a very interesting world they live in and very different than most of the other fantasy books I’ve read/ listened to.
Winter we had a feeling was the daughter of Nicholas and the sister that they say jumped (but I believe the king pushed her to take her necklace that let her talk to the demons). Or possibly the uncle who stayed by her bed after she was attacked by the water monster (the way he stayed at her bed all night just looking at her face made me feel like her saw her mothers face looking back at him and maybe he killed her for the king… could of been to pay for some of his “bastard” born children) 🤷♀️
We already knew winters uncle down below wasn’t her real uncle but now we found out her best friend from below did have a sister that was taken by a mage 🧙♀️ (not to eat like they were told but to adopt) so her cousin is her best friends sister!
I was right about who was releasing the demons but didn’t know why, now we do!
And you really can’t help but feel bad for all these demons that were kidnapped from their world and trapped loosing their minds over the years.
These places in the sky shouldn’t exist and should be brought down slowly. These places king should be killed he’s definitely evil!

A great continuation of the Academy of Falling Kingdoms trilogy. Wynter is trying to find clues and make the right connections to solve the mystery from book 1. It seems like finding answers is more important than Wynter ever thought because the Floats/Reverie and all its people are in danger. Like in the first book, Wynter contemplates and makes conclusions which bring her closer to the final answer concerning the demon attacks, the earthquakes and the family secret of the Rosewoods. Everything is somehow connected but the time is running out for Wynter and her friends. Book 3 will give the answer whether they will make it and save/free everyone.

I really enjoyed this book. the character development from the previous one to now is very exciting.
I felt the "bad guy" was a lot more obvious than the author seemed to think and was not surprised in the least, but it was still a really nice twist. it was only obvious because it was perfect.
I'm kind of disappointed that it's taken this long to get Winter's ground family safe and even now there's still only promises and no action in that area.
I honestly liked this book better than the first though so that is refreshing.

The Secret Of Magic by Marisa Mills and Drake Mason is the second story in the Falling Kingdoms series!
Picking up where the first story ended, the mystery continues to grow and the danger to Wynter, her friends and the whole kingdom is escalating very quickly.
I really love how the characters are growing and becoming more, especially Wynter. Her strength is really starting to show. Looking forward to the conclusion in this series!

Only good thing about this book is lucien I don't understand the protagonist i she's just plain and I would say stupid or oblivious and makes all the wrong decisions one dicision is her obession with alexander boy may be hot but he's a rude ass and this girl just need to stand up and stop being all he's abad but he's hot. Like hello you have lucien like that guy is just ;) but yes I hate the protagonist

I loved it! From surviving the fall to the very last chapter I found it interesting and just wanted to keep reading. I knew her true identity it was kind of obvious I was just willing it along until Wynter found out too! Looking forward to seeing where they all go from here.

I cannot believe how long it took her to realize she's actually a mage. I feel the audience knew in book 1 when she did get entrance exam.
Is Alexander supposed to be our love interest? They have no sparks, just the author telling us. I lost the little respect I had for him after he whipped her

Masterfully written! This is a superb book and an absolute must-read! After Wynter escapes certain death with the help of Lucian, the demon she freed from her sword, she returns to the academy and Dorian's service in the hope of securing a better future for herself, her brother, Briar, and best friend Sterling. Demons are still attacking, the floating kingdom seems to be falling, and it is becoming apparent that somebody wants her (or somebody close to her) dead and will stop at nothing to achieve it. Fulfilling Dorian's quest will put her and all those she has come to love and care for in mortal danger and reveal a far greater threat that if not thwarted will doom them all. Foe will become friend. Friend will become a foe. And secrets will be uncovered with life changing consequences.
The Secret of Magic is a highly imaginative tale full of suspense, intrigue and thrilling action that left me completely spell-bound. This book resolves and answers many of the mysteries and questions that were formed in book one. We also get to learn more about the history and motivations of many of the characters. The characters are well-developed, complex with their own and sometimes conflicting agendas. The story is set in an expansive, fascinating and inventive world and we get to see more of the Lower Realms and Reverie and are given a glimpse of Lucian's heavenly demon home. Do yourself a favour and put this to the top of your to-read pile now.

I could almost really like this book however the MC bothered me so much that I was getting frustrated while reading. There are so many obvious moments that I felt the MC almost actively decided to ignore or was too stupid to put together. For instance even though she she was obviously talking to demons she didn't figure that that might not be normal and she might have magic? And for someone who was supposed to have grown up in the Scraps she was too trusting, too forgiving and too easy to manipulate. There was even a part of the book were she thinks "that sounded suspicious, but then he looked at me and smiled" (or something along those lines) and I wanted to stop reading. Also she is apparently isn't afraid of confronting huge demons with the obvious magic she does have but doesn't want to acknowledge but is still afraid of human uncle? She reminds me of a tiger who doesn't realize its not in its cage anymore and still continues to pace back and forth as if it still is. The entire book I wanted to slap her so many times for being either naive, having no self worth, being ignorant or just plain simple minded.
However like I said had the main character not bothered me so much and I would have enjoyed reading this.

It is not often that the second book in a series bypasses the first. I loved reading the Source of Magic (Book 1 in the series), but the Secret of Magic (book 2 in the series) is even better!!!
It is impressive and helpful that the second book comes so close on the heels of the first. That way, my goldfish memory was able to retain what happened in the first book and jump headfirst into all the action in this book. Since the various worlds and protagonists were already set up previously, this book easily manages to delve deeper into it. I love that this book is longer - one never wants a good thing to end!
Every time I thought one mystery was solved, the story took another turn. I was so involved and immersed in the story that at one point when things are super tense (no spoilers), I actually had to stop and do something else for a while to calm down. I cheered, I cried and I rooted for Wynter and her group of friends. This is one of the best books that I have read this year.

The last book left off so abruptly it made me mad. This one picks up right where it left off. I actually wish they were all just one large book. Would have made me happier.
BUT, the story is a good one.
They find out what is going on. The kingdom is falling and someone wants it to fall faster....and kill everyone. It's a plot for revenge on the entire kingdom. I won't tell who....just read it.
This book has more action than the last and you'll want to jump right into the 3rd as soon as you finish this one. I sure did. So have it on hand.
I don't need to retell the story. I'm sure you read the summary already. But things get much more exciting in this one. Who is 'bad,' who is 'good?' You don't truly find out in this one. You must keep reading. But it all comes together well in the last book and it ends great.

We return from the end of the last book where Wynter and Alexander have fallen from Reverie but survived. Wynter is trying to hide that she's a fraud from Alexander, who happens to be a prince.
When things are revealed, Wynter thinks that she's alone and exposed, but some people reveal kindness unexpectedly. In other ways, other people are revealed to be the true evils behind the attacks, and Wynter must decide if she is to keep her promise to Lucian, the demon who has saved her multiple times or save her people.
Wynter also discovers things about her family that shock everyone around her and make her realize just how much has been sacrificed for her.

November 28, 2020I have finally finished this one! It was partially me, partially the book. I’m not quite sure how to rate this one. Some big reveals, most unexpected yet expected at the same time. I liked getting more information about the mage’s magic and how demons play into that. It was interesting getting that tidbit of info about the demon’s world(s?). Some good character growth in regards to Vivianne and it was especially nice seeing more of Tati and Jessa. I hope the next one answers all of my questions, especially considering the next is the final book and the there’s quite a bit to wrap up. Here’s to hoping there are no loose ends!

The Secret Of Magic by Drake Mason and Marissa Mills is the 2nd book of the Academy of Falling Kingdoms series. And it was just as enchanting as the first book. I end up staying up all night to finish it. When you sacrifice sleep you know you have a 5 star read. It’s a page packed adventure where Prince Alexander and Wynter with the help of her sword Lucian try to figure out who is bringing in the demons. While trying to decide if they can trust one another. It was definitely full of big secret reveals and former enemies becoming allies. I definitely look forward to the next book!

This series just gets better & better with each book! More secrets & answers are revealed as Wynter & her friends from the Academy make more discoveries about who's releasing the demons & the connection to the earthquakes & Reverie falling. More facts are uncovered about Wynter's family in a way she never thought possible! Brilliant story-telling & unique style continue to make this series a must-read. Hope book 3 comes out soon need to know what happens to Wynter, Lucian, Alexander, Vivianne & Dorian next!

Great book. Although she saved the life of Prince Alexander when they fell from the floating city, Wynter is worried that he might tell his father and the academy that she was a fraud who also talks to demons. She had to go back to the academy and pretend that nothing was wrong, but demon attacks keep happening and people are starting to look at her because she was present at each attack. When things come to a head, her Wynter and her friends try to find out who is releasing demons and is therefore responsible for the attacks.
