The Green Beach File

Rate this book
A funny, engaging legal mystery for all those who love and enjoy nature—and reading at the beach.

First, an amphibian expert is found murdered in the fancy shoreline town of Mayfield, Connecticut. Then, a second, shocking murder of a well-respected community leader occurs. Why are there murders happening in a town as peaceful as Mayfield?

Jenn isn't the perfect clever attorney. She doesn't love her job, has no innate ability to solve mysteries, no superpowers, and no awesome legal skills. But she does have her love and respect for nature—which tends to distract her from her legal work, yet still somehow guides her. Along with her entertaining and dysfunctional family, Jenn weaves her way into the midst of a momentous fight over land preservation.

The murders appear to be tied to the development of the largest parcel of pristine beachfront land between Boston and New York. Most folks in Mayfield want the unique beachfront preserved for the public and object to the construction of expensive homes, but are any of these folks extremist enough to murder for the environment and save coastal land? And how much will Jenn stretch the law to solve the mystery?

The Green Beach File touches on the solace we as humans get from time spent outside in nature, the social pressure of today's environmentalism, and our culture's continued quest for meaning through overt consumption and the acquisition of wealth—all while remaining a light-hearted summer read for those who love nature, the outdoors, and relaxing on the beach!

K.A. Perry's The Green Beach File is a mystery that makes you think—gotta love it!

Jenn is an environmental attorney who is more comfortable with nature than socializing with others. But as she’s headed to meet a blind date, she finds a rare form of moss in a bookstore parking lot. And upon looking closer at the moss, she stumbles upon a dead body stashed in a cooler.

It turns out the body is that of a noted amphibian expert who has been employed by Jenn’s law firm to render an opinion about whether a proposed development on acres of beachfront should move forward. Shortly after this murder, another occurs—this time it’s a well-respected community leader who was against the development.

Two murders in this small town so close together leave everyone shaken. While some townspeople believe the murders are totally unrelated to the development project, Jenn isn’t so sure. And even though she knows she’s not an investigator, she can’t help but start looking into the murders, and keeps blundering into things. It turns out there was a lot of behind-the-scenes manipulation going on, but was that enough to provoke murder?

I really enjoyed this book and read it in one sitting. I loved Perry’s imagery and how much joy Jenn derived from the nature around her. It also was a very thought-provoking look at the debate between expansion and preserving and protecting nature.

While I had my suspicions about how the book would resolve itself, I still enjoyed the way Perry tied everything together. I’d love to see Jenn and these characters (maybe not her sister-in-law, lol) again!!

Thank you so much to Kate Rock Book Tours and K.A. Perry for having me on the Instagram tour for The Green Beach File!

The book is smarter than your average cozy mystery, so I guess it’s just a mystery? The protagonist, Jenn, is a lawyer with a love for the outdoors and multiple beverages at once. She is quirky and feels like a real person to me. There are concerns regarding the competency and professionalism of the local detective/police force, so Jenn uses her environmental and legal expertise to help reason out the case. Her sister, community members, other lawyers, and one handsome policeman are also on the cozier side of the case. I liked the characters a lot, I could relate to a lot of Jenn’s issues as a 30 something year old workaholic who likes her “pet trees” more than most people. I can’t count how many people have tried to set me up with their friends or someone they know, so I feel Jenn’s pain.

The mystery itself was interesting because there were so many potential suspects. Most locals don’t want the stretch of beach in question to be developed, and there are so many people with a stake in the profits and action. There is one kind of obvious red herring, then at least 4 or 5 other suspects who totally could have committed the murders, with equally as many motives floating around. It wasn’t busy though and I could easily keep track of the people and plot lines. I made a good guess but it wasn’t the right person or motive.

I definitely recommend for fans of mysteries that are looking for a good summer read, beach book, or mystery to cozy up with next to at a winter fire. The book is funny and on the lighter side but definitely also interesting with real life issues and a small twist of romantic interest. Oh gosh I also love how awkward Jenn is with Matt, likening his eyes to potting soil! That’s something I would blurt out too

I honestly devoured this book in one sitting. I love the small-town mystery setting and our main character Jenn who is beyond brilliant and passionate about solving the mystery surrounding the town and its reasons. The rest of the characters are likable, and I specifically love all the historical and ecological information. The story is inimitable and kept me guessing till the end. If you’re into engaging, enlightening, and tons of whodunit scenes, look no further! Grab this book!

In The Green Beach File two murders have occurred in the peaceful shoreline town of Mayfield, Connecticut. When local attorney Jenn stumbles upon the first dead body she finds herself drawn to the case and begins an investigation of her own. Are the murders related to each other, and are they somehow tied to the planned development of expensive homes on the pristine beachfront land in Mayfield? With tensions high in the town and most people strongly in favor of preserving the land for public use, Jenn sets out to find who feels strongly enough to kill.

The Green Beach File was a quick read, with short, bite-sized chapters. After reading a number of longer books in a row this light book was exactly what I needed. The Green Beach File is one of a few legal thrillers I have read this year and I’m finding that I really enjoy them. This particular novel was unique in that it focused on environmental law, and specifically land preservation. This is an area I don’t know much about so I found the details of the storyline to be very interesting. I really enjoyed Jenn, the main character, who is quirky, often awkward, and largely in over her head. Given the shortness of the novel the story wrapped up a bit quickly for me, so I’m hoping we’ll get to see more of Jenn and her lawyerly exploits in the future! If you’re a nature-lover, definitely give this one a try!

Thank you to Kate Rock Book Tours and author K. A. Perry for including me on the tour for this unique debut novel!

Jenn was reluctant to go to a book signing event at P.T. Jane's, an independent bookstore in Mayfield, which was actually another hopeless attempt by her sister - in - law Claire to set her up on a date. However, little did Jenn know that a seemingly ordinary day will start a chain of unsettling events (read murders) not only for her but all the Mayfield folks.

Jenn found a dead body of Dr. Tilman, a renowned herpetologist from Columbia University in an ice freezer in the parking area of P.T. Jane's. He was preparing a report for Mayfield coastal development project that could show if it's okay to go ahead with the construction project without endangering any biodiversity or the landscape. Many citizens were against the project and wanted to preserve the coastline in its pristine condition. Could the murder be linked with Riverfront Landing? Who was the murderer? Whose beach is it anyway? Does it belong to the citizens who want to preserve it or is it just a private property that should be allowed to be developed in any manner the owner wants?

The Green Beach File is a different read, it feels more real than fiction as the elements of drama and emotions have been underplayed. One thing that I admired about the writing style is the author's description of nature. Nature has been described beautifully throughout the book. Another thing that I really liked was the nature of the protagonist, Jenn herself. Her character is well developed. She is not extra ordinary, she is the one who likes to spend some quite time on her own staring at her pet trees - Romeo and Juliet, she caves in to other's requests easily, she admires flowers, trees and nature around her and spends time dwelling in thoughts of nature's beauty.

I hoped the relationship between Jenn and Matt was developed some more, the secrets revealed as the story was reaching climax also failed to impress. The book has very short chapters and overall is an interesting read.

Thank you to Kirkus Reviews and the author (who signed it). She said she wanted me to save it since she wants to be known as the next John Grisham? Far from it (sorry).

It was a fast read but all the references to environmental things and trees and amphibians really were too much for my liking. The character Jenn was an environmental attorney who worked for the firm whose client wanted to build condos, etc. on wasteland. There were rivals that wanted it to preserve nature etc.

The mystery part was interesting and who actually killed them was shocking to me. She discovered the first body while waiting to go into a book signing reading.

I liked her family and she had two trees which she named Romeo and Juliet. The one really silly part is that she would always drink 3 drinks at once even though they didn't work together. Every time she did that I would cringe!

I was drawn into this environmental, legal mystery so quickly that I took it in with me to the post office to read while waiting in the very long, socially- distanced line!

Perry takes a unique setting with the outdoors being a central part of the story. Not only is there a murder mystery for our protagonist, Jenn, to solve, but her love of nature helps her in ways she otherwise may not have seen. Jenn, the outdoorsy attorney, is likeable from the start, along with several other interesting characters.

The story revolves around Jenn who loves nature and the environment very much. Though she doesn't socialize much with people, she goes for a blind date, and during her visit, she finds a rare moss at the bookstore. When she takes a closer look at the moss, she finds a dead body.
.
After a while, we get to know that the body was of an amphibian expert who was appointed by Jenn's firm to give his insights and opinions about whether the firm should move forward with a particular project or not.
After this death, another murder case is found. The murder was of a community leader who was against the project.

Two murders in much less time than two when there is a link of the project in both the murders. Do you think these are related?
.
Jenn keeps thinking about it and she thinks that there is some connection between these two cases and now she is on a mission to find out what connects these murderers.
.
What do you think, will Jenn be able to find out the murderer? Or will she become the victim?
.
The story is quite interesting and I like the character of Jenn and her love for nature is indefinable. The way she connects to nature is so soothing.
The writing style of the author is so great that I finished this book in one sitting.

Murder mystery in a southern CT beach town mixes intrigue, environmental law, and small town politics. The main character, Jenn, is real and believable as are the others. They are people you’d meet in your own small town and are easy to connect with. What separates this book from many other mysteries (to me) is the expert way the author weaves in really interesting environmental and historical information into the plot It isn’t your average (and often predictable) murder mystery full of violence. Rather it’s a page turner because it is relatable, especially if you’re from a small town, well-researched and engaging, and full of twists and turns that keep you reading. I loved it and highly recommend it.

This was such an enjoyable book! It can easily be read in a day at the beach but I stretched it out because I did not want it to end. I admit I am a little biased as a friend of mine wrote it. So I actually read it twice to make sure my review was honest. Which it is. The characters are so real that it felt like I was watching a movie instead of reading a book. I am already looking forward to the sequel!

One murder in a small town should be shocking, but two murders? Count me in!

Jenn is a local attorney in Mayfield, CT where these two murders take place. Jenn happens to be the lucky woman who finds one of the bodies; an amphibian expert in town to help decide a legal case of the development of a large construction and property case in town. Jenn takes an interest in the case because she too loves nature more than the average person. She also takes an interest in Officer Matt who arrives on the scene when the bodies are discovered. Jenn’s law firm is part of the development deal and she just can’t stop thinking about this case.

I really liked the nature part of this legal mystery. I thought it was different than usual, and added something I wouldn’t have thought about. A silly personality quirk, I also love the Jenn was very into having several beverages at once. I love to have more than one beverage at a time and I thought this was such a funny thing to come up a few times!

I liked the lighter tone to this book and tbr small romance between Jen and Matt. I also enjoyed the coastal town location. As someone who drives between NYC and Boston several times a year I really enjoyed this book since I know right where they were talking about. I’m ready from more from KA Perry!

This debut mystery filled with quirky characters who cared a lot about the environment and their community was the enjoyable read I really needed to escape into. I loved the descriptive writing and the fast pace. I really liked Jenn, the attorney who always needed several drinks at once, and would love to see her in more books, but either way I’m looking forward to what Perry writes next.

I received a gifted copy in exchange for my review.

DNF. Maybe it’s because I just read Circe and my standards are high, but I could just not get into the writing in The Green Beach File. So incredibly clunky and awkward. I didn’t read enough of the book to give it a fair rating, but if I could just rate the writing I would give it 2 stars.

Into every crime fiction reader's life something like THE GREEN BEACH FILE should sneak. Quietly delivered to the front door, unheralded, decorated with a nicely atmospheric cover, with a blurb that doesn't quite telegraph exactly what is about to happen.
But you know it when it is happening. A feeling that this is exactly the sort of book that you've been looking for. It's the sort of book that makes you start to resent the need for sleep, and not regret ignored chores for one second.
There is not much to say without the risk of giving up some detail that’s best left secret. Soooo many time I wanted to just take one little peek at the end to see what happens to Jenn, will she solve the mystery? But I didn’t. I survived the heart pounding suspense and made it to the end of a very satisfying read. The surprises and twists keep the reader guessing up until the final page, and my first thought upon finishing the novel was that I wanted to read it a second time.
It is biting and witty; a fast paced perfect story of a shocking murder, a twisty plot, strong characters, and a storyline that stays with you.. And a DEFINITE must read if you enjoy this genre. YES!

Pretty sure this is an unedited book. Just awful, awful dialogue, uncomfortable, awkward interactions between characters, and a weird motive for murder. The only interesting thing was that it takes place in Madison.

This was a quick read for me! Jenn is an attorney she doesn’t particularly love her job but she loves nature and that can be a distraction while she works. . When an amphibian expert is found dead in Mayfield Connecticut and then a second murder occurs people begin to get scared, murder doesn’t happen in Mayfield. It soon appears that the murders are connected to the development of a large parcel of beachfront between Boston and New York. The people of Mayfield want the beach preserved, and are not happy with the construction company or their ideas of expensive homes being built , but is any of them capable of murder?Jen is determined to go any length to solve the mystery. I enjoyed this book the small town and the characters who live there, the main character Jenn was relatable and her family was dysfunctional but fun and lovable. The book was different it mixed law and nature, while I read I learned so much about salamanders and trees. I give this four stars!

After receiving a copy of this book from the author herself, I decided to read it during my airplane travel time from KC to San Francisco. It was a quick, refreshing read for me! I loved it— it was a nice change of the type of “legal mysteries” I usually read. If you love “who done it” books and the environment.. then this is a book for you!

✨Review✨

Thank you so much to the lovely author herself for sending a free copy of “The Green Beach File” for me to review! This book is already available and readers will want to grab their own copy!

“A funny, engaging legal mystery for all those who love and enjoy nature-and reading at the beach.”

Do you love to read? Do you love nature? If you answered yes to both of those questions then I have a fantastic read for you! “The Green Beach File” is a legal mystery unlike any I have read before. It’s a short book of just about 250 pages and it kept my attention the whole way through. I loved the main character and would definitely read more books with Jenn solving mysteries. She reminded me of a modern day Nancy Drew. The mystery itself was shocking and fun to solve. I had so many theories just like Jenn did!

What I enjoyed most about this book was the overall theme of nature. I learned so much about herpetology, salamanders, trees, and nature in general from reading this book. I already am a big nature lover, but it further opened my eyes to how important it is to preserve history and our land.

If you enjoy a good legal mystery and love nature then this is definitely the book for you!

Living in the community The Green Beach File is based upon, made reading the book all the more enjoyable. Well written, it's a book I loved. One of those rare books where I want to read all the time but afraid to get to the end because, well, then it will be done.

I look forward K.A. Perry's next book. I'd love to see this become a series following the same characters.

Looking for a light murder mystery with suspense and thrills? Just go and grab this copy!
THe green beach file tells the story of two consecutive murders in the sleepy town of Connecticut where nothing such happens. On her way to meet someone, our protagonist Jenn who works in a law firm stumbled upon weird looking moss at the bookstore, her love for greenery and plants drew her there and she found a dead body.It was a murder, murder of an amphibian expert which was appointed by Jean's law firm for a development project. soon people of connecticut were shocked with the news of another murder, which was of a community leader who was in the news because of that development project as he was completely opposing it.
now what this project actually was?
It was 'The Riverfront Landing Project' which about construction of residential units on beachfront and was opposed by most of the locals.
Are these murders interlinked or being connection with project is just coincidence?
Not feeling much content with police officers and detectives Jenn sets herself on a mission to know about the connection between them. Who was behind these murders? Will Jenn be able to solve these murder mysteries?
Being a voracious mystery reader and because of its gripping plot I was totally into the story and finished it in one sitting. With a lucid language and such a beautiful and descriptive writing with this unique environmental aspect I found this book one of a kind.Pace is just perfect and as we turn pages we get to see amazing twists and turns which bring more excitement and fun.Even though its about murder mystery it was light and easy read with a perfect climax.

There is a wonderful list of suspects, motives and along the way, until Jenn untangles the threads and find the culprit which was much surprise to me.The mystery was simple to put together but hard to decipher.

Not only this is a well knitted story but it also makes us aware and enlighten us about nature, our environment and surroundings. Its well researched and address environmental concerns. Jenn's love for nature gives us a new perspective and vision.I got to know much about plants and trees; history and ecology.
I loved reading this! It literally made my day!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

"....every day we grow older is one more day to learn something new, which we may then use to handle each of the days ahead. She wished her trees could learn from the blight and find a way to stop it."
Review:
Jenn Bowdoin is a Mayfield resident but she works for Shipward & Waters a law firm that's keen on building at the Riverfront Landing. She is a unique character that takes three drinks at the same time and has a fascination with nature, she has two pets Romeo and Juliet who are both trees you might think it weird but read to find out why ;) she loves being out in the open breathing in the fresh air. Jenn was a very relatable character with a "yes" always on the top of her tongue to anyone who seeks help, she's a person who people often take advantage of thinking that they're naïve but in reality aren't so they just don't want to disappoint anyone. Matt is new to Mayfield Police Department and he meets Jenn at his first crime scene there and sparks fly they could be a lovely couple...or not. And let me not forget Claire her sister in law who's a born matchmaker and a character for sure, find out more once you get your copy!

Anyways this book had me on the edge of the seat till the very end and I've bitten my nails down to the bone, it was that thrilling. It's written in third person narrative and so at first it was different to read but once I adapted to it I was on the verge of breaking down and reading it all in one sitting and guess what I did do it LOL and the writing style was unique and easy to understand, the characters were totally relatable too. The author had me wanting more and more than she gave at the beginning (a very good thing to keep the suspense and intrigue element) this fast paced book could be your weekend read too so grab it right now and start reading!!

Author:K.A. Perry
My Ratings: 4.9/5 star

This novel is a great suspense and psychological thriller. The twists and turns in this book are really amazing. The novel keeps you engrossed through out the read and its plot has been on the nail biting lines.

This novel has the right pace of read. I am so very impressed with author Perry’s writing. It’s so energetic and engaging that every chapter which unfolds gives you another new level of excitement. The lead character of this story Jenn is an environmentalist. While having headed for the blind date, she finds the abnormal moss in a bookstore parking lot. Having given a closer look she finds is to be a dead body stored in a cooler. Now here starts the mystery ; isn’t that amazing read to find who actually killed the another senior environmentalist. And shortly after this, there is another murder.

These murders at the small town creates havoc situation and how that gets solved is a great read of this book. I will not be spoiler to mention the climax, but I must say that it has the best ever climax in my recent reads.

I would re-read this book only for the Catchy writing. Author certainly scores bonus point fo this. This book takes you through the goose bumpy ride of suspense, thriller, mystery, investigation.

I would recommend this book for all those who are in love with murder mystery kinds of read.

An beautifully narrated story with unexpected climax

This thrilling story starts when in a community of Connecticut, a series of murders surface. Jenn, Associate in an environmental lawyer. in a tiny bound city in Connecticut is turned in an directions whereas attempting to find who in this little city, can be a killer. The author incorporates a fantastic understanding of community life, wherever everybody is aware of everybody else. A plausible scenario that might occur in several potential communities. Within the finish it had been an sudden character end was guilty.

Every character bear an individuality that admires me. I adored her elegant approach of putting in the atmosphere of cozy mystery. the outline of the scenic beauties ar excellent. whereas reading I could visualize them ahead of my eyes. The characters are so real I felt like I was watching a movie instead of reading a book - which is always the sign of a good book in my opinion. The lead character, Jenn, may be a relatable every-woman with funny quirks and hangups. She's a bit like you and me, except that she lands up within the wrong place at the incorrect time, and shortly the reader is on for the thrilling ride to seek out out who committed the murder. It’s a mystery in a small New England town with likable and relatable characters. This well crafted mystery can leave you hoping we see another book within the future that includes attorney Jenn.

The Greenbeach File is a book full of thrill and suspense, mysteries unfold every few pages which keep you engrossed to the book. This thrilling story starts when in a small town of Connecticut, a series of murders take place. An attorney Jenn who is tired of blind dates set up by her sister in law finds a dead body hidden outside a bookstore she was supposed to visit. It all seems to be related to a beachfront in Mayfield. Who could be extreme enough to murder for the environment?

Environmental thrillers are rare to find, atleast for me this is the first one that I read and I loved it. Despite the crime and legal investigations, it feels like a light enjoyable read. I might as well say its perfect for reading at the beach in a summer day. I really liked the energy of the characters, they were relatable and real, there was almost a humorous factor to them.

The story seemed very realistic, something that could easily happen anyday to any of us. Its a well researched, interesting and clever book, with an equally clever protagonist who is very likable. I would've enjoyed it even more if I got a sense of urgency in the scenes where they talk or find out about the crimes instead of them being so causal. I'd definitely recommend this book if you're looking for a light fun read.

The book is a roller coaster ride. It talks about so many things. There was so much to learn, be the main genre be crime and murder. There was a lot of information about the environment and plants and trees which was so engaging to read.

Coming back to the story, the story revolves around Jenn, who isn't the perfect clever attorney. She doesn't love her job, has no innate ability to solve mysteries, no superpowers, and no awesome legal skills. But she does have her love and respect for nature—which tends to distract her from her legal work, yet still somehow guides her.

First, an amphibian expert is found murdered in the fancy shoreline town of Mayfield, Connecticut. Then, a second, shocking murder of a well-respected community leader occurs. Why are there murders happening in a town as peaceful as Mayfield? how much will Jenn stretch the law to solve the mystery?
Read to know more.

~The narration is lucid and the language used is intriguing and thrilling.

📚The green beach file📚

A great combination of mystery and suspense that keeps the reader guessing right to the end. This is a legal mystery, with a unique and interesting storyline. Once you pick up this book, you won't be able to put down.

The main character, Jenn, is real and believable as are the others. They are people you’d meet in your own small town and are easy to connect with. What separates this book from many other mysteries is the expert way the author weaves in really interesting environmental and historical information into the plot. It isn’t your average (and often predictable) murder mystery full of violence. The characters are unique. The book isn’t always focused on the mystery. It is also about how the protagonist, Jenn who learns how to deal with her life’s problems. The book also has great humor that makes you laugh when you are not expecting it.

The synopsis was so interesting and then I was just pulled in even further by the actual story! This one was full of suspense, and I found myself feeling desperate to get back to it. Only 258 pages, so it’s a pretty quick read!
I highly recommend this exciting murder mystery.
