Pokémon Adventures Volume 5 serves two purposes. It’s first and foremost, a conclusive end to the Johto adventures, as well as a solid transition volume into Hoenn. It’ll be exciting to see more adventures with Ruby and Sapphire! Additionally, this series remains a great All Ages series that I definitely recommend for tween and young teen comic fans.

Some of the darker elements of the series may not be good for young readers. However, I think if you have a 12 to 15-year-old who loves Pokémon in your life, this might be a series to consider sharing with them. It’s definitely worth any trainer’s time.

This edition marks the end of the gold/silver arc and the beginning of ruby/sapphire arc. This story as a whole is amazing, and this is yet another incredible entry. I will be describing the beginning of the ruby/sapphire arc to avoid spoiling the ending of gold/silver. Ruby a young boy who wants to be a contest star has recently moved to the Hoenn region with his mom to be with his dad. His dad is a gym leader, and one of the strongest trainers in the region. However despite his past, Ruby no longer has any interest in competitive battling. However his father has made his disapproval of Ruby's dream very clear, and has banned him from participating in contests. When he runs away from home to live out his dreams he meets a wild-child named sapphire. The two of them find themselves caught in the crossfire of an invisible war, and soon they'll be the only ones that can save the region.

The Gold/Silver arc got a bit confusing by the end but I'm excited about the Ruby/Sapphire arc. Those have never been my favorite either in the games or the anime but the manga is cute so far!

A huge chunk of this omnibus covers the end of the Crystal saga (which now has all of our previous characters included for the finale)! It was awesome seeing everyone back together again! Lots of battles, a twist or two and sad backstories included…
I loved the ending of this arc. I loved seeing the trainers reunite. Is Red in a love triangle..? lol!!!! Pick Yellow! Pick Yellow! Maybe I’m biased… haha!!!
I love how Green and Silver had a brother/sister relationship. They both shared a traumatic childhood but Green was able to get them out of it. And Silver came back to save her in the end. Very nice to see.
The only thing I was questioning was why didn’t we see Koga and Janine reunite? We finally saw Koga but no reunion with his daughter?! Maybe these characters will be back next arc? We shall see…

The remaining part of this volume started “The Fourth Chapter”. In this new arc, we have Ruby, who only cares about the beauty of his Pokémon and Sapphire, a feral girl who can sniff out Pokémon like a wild beast! Obviously, these two are complete opposites and become rivals instantly. This is absolutely hilarious to me! I love this idea! Also, we have Devon Corporation that has created all sorts of Pokémon gear… and Team Aqua??? Is Team Rocket no more?

And so the Gold, Silver and Crystal adventures end. Pokémon Adventures Collector's Edition, Vol. 5 is a mixed bag. The Gym Leader contest is very good though a bit short. There is also a really good epic feel with Everyone since Vol 1 being involved in the final battle. What lets it down is some of the main characters. Gold wasn't a great character already but making him the saviour of the day felt forced and doesn't really help with his character. Crystal annoyingly is relegated to a supporting role despite being a much better heroine and character than Gold.
And then there are the villains; The Mask of Ice identity is so obvious is laughable and along with Will and Karen once again sees the series making villains out of non-villain characters, which is a terrible idea. Karen's personality is a complete switch around from her established personality and Will is quite Annoying; worst that this is is one characterisation he has ever gotten.
The start of Ruby and Sapphire is intriguing but once again we have an unlikable male lead with Ruby. Sapphire's personality is more interesting being the opposite of May from the anime and makes her a lot more fun.
Still a very good book, but the villains and male leads need to be worked on.

This set of chapters covers the bombastic end to Gold, Silver, and Crystal's adventures, and, by extension, the journey's end of every other protagonist from the previous volumes. I was genuinely not expecting to be this invested in the final battle for this arc. I was pleased to find that it effectively brought back and connected nearly every character and plot point introduced in the series, satisfyingly. The battles are as interesting and creatively choreographed as ever, and the final big bad was a properly intimidating foe for the characters to struggle against (also a bit of a genuine surprise at the reveal of how they carried out their plan.

Also, a neat introduction to Ruby and Sapphire. This series always manages to impress me with how it keeps each story arc feeling fresh with every new set of protagonists that have unique goals and character traits. And here, I loved that this one frames Ruby's and Sapphire's stories around their individual races to get every contest ribbon and gym badge, respectively.

I was sad to see the original storyline of Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Gold, Silver, and Crystal come to an end. I kind of figured that Pryce was the Masked Man all along, but his background story was heartbreaking. This just goes to show that grief can lead a person down many paths, including one of anger and resentment. The final battle was epic to say the least. My only complaint is that the original story arc had to end. But, I am loving the adventures of Ruby and Sapphire! Having grown up with the video games, I was pleasantly surprised to see the switch of the roles of these characters. I did not picture Ruby being such an enthusiast of Pokemon contests. Sapphire’s wild side caught me off guard, too. Overall, I am enjoying these adventures, and my only regret is that I didn’t pick them up sooner! Here’s to more adventures in Book 6!

It was five stars for the first two volumes that was most of the book and three stars for the last volume. The finale battle takes place and all of the characters from the previous volumes are roped in to battle Ho-Oh and Lugia together and defeat the ice faced man. I really enjoyed the final battle scene with everything coming together and all the secrets being revealed. I thought the bad guy would be someone else because it seemed to obvious but oh well. The last volume I don’t care for the characters at all yet or how they are portrayed.

This book is great and packed with action and adventure! I like the characters in the book and that there is a new Pokeball, the Time ball! and the masked man is actually Pryce! An old Gym Leader.
Pryce is the ice type Gym Leader. No wonder they call him the mask of ice!

I was so used to reading those tiny mangas that the words felt so big on the page, and I didn’t have to wait for a week between every volume. It was nice

Volume 6 of the Pokémon adventures collector's edition wraps up the Gold/Silver/Crystal Arc and starts the Ruby/Sapphire arc. The GSC arc is wrapped up amazingly, with some incredible fight scenes and stunning visuals. The RS arc looks to be something very different, seeying as our two protagonist now follow different journeys seperate from one another: one wants to complete all the contests, one was to beat all the gyms. It's exciting to see where they will take this new arc. Volume 5 is a worthy conclusion and an incredible new beginning.

Another great read within the Pokemon manga series. Another story arc is completed and another son begins shortly afterwards. In this volume, the Johto region story arc is concluded with Gold, Silver, and Crystal (Crys) as they discover who the mysterious "Masked Man" is and what his opportunity goal was in the end. The story arc includes characters (i.e.: Yellow, Green, Blue, Red, and the Kanto gym leaders) and I thought it was a fitting way for the end.

The series then heads to the Hoenn and focuses on Ruby and Sapphire as the main protagonists. Ruby, who wants to become a Pokémon coordinator and Sapphire, who wants to be a champion in Hoenn. The story concluded with our heroes going out their journeys; however, due to a bet from Sapphire, after 80 days, they will meet up to see who has been successful in their endeavors.
