Murder in the Mix #20

Snickerdoodle Secrets

Rate this book
A baker who sees the dead. One too many suitors.
And a killer. Living in Honey Hollow can be murder.

*A laugh out loud standalone cozy mystery by New York Times Bestseller Addison Moore* All books in the series can be read individually but are best enjoyed in order.

My name is Lottie Lemon, and I see dead people. Okay, so I rarely see dead people, mostly I see furry creatures of the dearly departed variety, aka dead pets, who have come back from the other side to warn me of their previous owner’s impending doom.

Everett has some serious upheaval coming his way that he never expected, and Lottie is determined to help him get through it. But with another dead body coming between them, things are bound to get in the way.

Lottie Lemon has a brand new bakery to tend to, a budding romance with perhaps one too many suitors, and she has the supernatural ability to see dead pets—which are always harbingers for ominous things to come. Throw in the occasional ghost of the human variety, a string of murders, and her insatiable thirst for justice, and you’ll have more chaos than you know what to do with.

Living in the small town of Honey Hollow can be murder.

This is the twentieth book in the Murder in the Mix series by Addison Moore.

First off, I have to say that this book series is more like an over the top soap opera than a normal cozy mystery. There are dead animals who randomly show up and give her clues regarding the murder. The cop love interest, Noah Fox has apparently died in the past and now come back to life. I have only read a couple of books in this series so I surely missed some important keystones along the way.

As I was reading along I wished for a bit more description and narrative of the setting surrounding Lottie. A lot of times I felt like I had no idea what was going on since my sense of where I was in the story universe seemed a bit iffy. There are character names starting with the same letter (for instance Everett and Evelyn[Evie]) and that can be confusing when quickly reading through a passage.

I am not sure why but I can’t quite buy Everett as a judge. Considering his stunning Chris Hemsworth looks, I could probably buy something like lumberjack or superhero. I would like to see him more in his own legal environment just to get a better idea of who he is. Currently, he doesn’t seem well fleshed out. I feel like as described he is all good looks and no substance. I need to see his brains to believe him in his judge role. Again, this is probably due to me missing the previous seventeen books in the series. I do indeed need to get a better idea of this series’s backstory in order to judge it properly.

Except for these few niggles, this is a fast and enjoyable read. You get hooked almost from the beginning wanting to know whodunit and what the heck is really going on.

I have to give kudos to the designer of the book covers of this series. They are just stellar works of art and I am sure Addison Moore has gotten a number of purchases just due to the impact of the colorful and well put together cover.

If you love a good cozy mystery, definitely dig into this one. But may I suggest that you start at book one and read through the series before getting to this one. It will be a more enjoyable experience and of course, make more sense to you in the end.

I received this arc from the author in return for an honest review.

Becoming a Family

Addison Moore's Snickerdoodle Secrets (Murder in the Mix book 20) follows Lottie's journey into adoptive motherhood with her husband-in-name-only, judge Essex Everett Baxter. After Everett's psychotic ex-girlfriend Cressida Bentley was revealed as the sender of threatening cookies to Lottie, she screamed that if she spent any time behind bars he'd never know anything about their child--yes, he and Cressie have a child together. Everett didn't deny it, so Lottie prepares for a baby or small child. Then crime boss Luke Lazzari invites the 3 of them ("We're all dating," says Lottie; "It's weird") to the Red Satin strip club and introduces them to one of the dancers. Everly Baxter Bentley looks 20 and is 15, and while she looks like her father (black hair, cobalt blue eyes) she gets her taste and attitude from Cressida ("I don't have to listen to a cop! I've got a major craving for foie gras!") and it doesn't look promising.
Evie--nobody dares call her Everly--gets too close to Lottie's bio mom Carlotta for Lottie's comfort and downs whiskey in "cute little sample glasses" (a good sign because it means she doesn't have experience with alcohol; a bad sign because Carlotta doesn't seem to care how underage her granddaughter is) while Lottie fends off a libidinous bunny who belonged to murdered designer Mitzi, killed at her own trunk show--injected with poison and then strangled in one of her own scarves. The rabbit, named Fluffy, reminds Lottie of her adoptive mother Miranda, a widow who put her 3 daughters through college and opened a B&B before choosing a procession of bad-to-worse men: a pervert, a controlling emotional abuser, an operator of a swingers' website, a fake pastor who cons widows out of their savings, the philandering mayor of Honey Hollow, Vermont, and now homicide detective Noah Fox's scheming father, Wiley, who defrauded Everett's mother and faked his own death, only to show up in HH alive and ready to ensnare all too willing Miranda. He convinced her to jack up the price of her "haunted B&B" tours (which end with The Last Thing They Ate at Lottie's bakery; the victim always has one of the Cutie Pie Bakery's sweet treats in, on, or near their body), host seances (the first is a bloodbath due to the disgruntled resident ghosts showing their anger; the second is a bust due to their refusal to bend to Wiley and Miranda's whims; there's no third), and hire him as a bartender (without a liquor license; that offense gets the B&B shut down temporarily). After all that, Miranda still stays with him! She's not bothered about her daughter dating his son, a situation that frankly bothers me.
Mitzi, the designer/murder victim, had a circle of friends from boarding school known as the Pinewood Seven (now Six). Whenever Lottie mentions Pinewood to one of Mitzi's circle, that person skedaddles. It must be important, but Lottie doesn't know how until one of the Six says Mitzi was writing a book that her circle didn't want published. Evie says she can easily locate the book and transfer it to a flash drive--teens can do that in their sleep! Lottie and Carlotta, armed with distracting snickerdoodles, enter Mitzi's office building and keep the receptionist busy while Evie enters Mitzi's office and transfers files. Other than Evie mistakenly putting Mitzi's laptop in her backpack--a felony-level theft--the operation goes smoothly, and Lottie reads a thinly veiled account of 8 friends gathered at a fancy lake, one being bashed over the head with a tire iron, and the others stuffing his body in his truck and sinking it in the nearby marsh. She looks up the lake online and sees the outline of a red truck. Old Ruby! A member of Mitzi's circle had said "Old Ruby" and then clammed up. All of the Pinewood Six can hire the best lawyers Daddy's money can buy--except one, the only person who has a job--Carly, Mitzi's assistant. Carly saw Mitzi bash her friend's head in with a tire iron, then the other five sink his body in the marsh in Old Ruby. When she lost her job at the hospital for stealing drugs and a syringe, she decided Mitzi had to die asap. The crowd of women at the trunk show provided perfect cover.
Carly tells Lottie all of this in Cormack's extensive back yard, where the designer's spring event, a Debutante Revival, is being held. She then hits Lottie's head on the concrete pool deck and drops her into the deep end.
Fortunately, Lottie spots Fluffy first and begs her to tell Carlotta she's in danger at the pool. Carlotta relays the message to Noah and Everett, and they race to the pool to save Lottie. Carly is cuffed by Noah and arrested for murder of Mitzi and attempted murder of Lottie; the other five are charged as accessories to the murder of the boy Mitzi killed 11 years earlier.
Evie was assigned a 5-page paper on something she wants to change. She writes that she'd wanted a caring mother, a father she could respect--a family. Now she has one! Aww...

I just can’t get enough of this series, Addison Moore really knows how to test your limits. Hell, I’m still waiting for her to put Lottie, Noah and Essex together as honestly, them three together would make an amazing trio. However, Addison likes keeping us on our toes and no matter how much we wish for her to do it, she’s still playing hardball with this one. Although, I can not wait for the day Cormack either gets killed, thrown in jail or just walks away for good. She is seriously driving me insane and now with the little surprise she helped Noah drop on both Essex, Lottie, I’m actually hating her even more….. Addison knows exactly what she’s doing with these characters and I can’t wait for the day they decide to just take matters into their own hands. I couldn’t fault the story, yes even with crazy Cormack still being there. Although, I do wish that both Noah and Essex would put aside their differences and realise that whilst they both love Lottie, them being together would just work wonders. I am excited to see what Addison is going to bring us next and now that Evie is part of the family, I have a feeling that things are about to get a lot more exciting.

You’d think that with Lottie’s stalker (Cressida) now being charged for stalking her, that her life would be simple? Nope, that’s not how things work for Lottie in Honey Hollow, instead when things just start looking on the bright side, life decides to throw more surprises at her. This time, whilst Cressida is currently on bail, both Noah and Essex are hard at work trying to find out who and where Essex’s secret child is… Baring in mind, they only know about this because when Cressida was getting arrested, her parting words was that Essex did in fact have a secret child. So you can imagine that Lottie is having the time of her life with trying to comfort him in finding them, then she’s got the bakery to look after and lets not forget her roommate….. Her bioligcial mother. So her hands are full, but as you’d expect trouble never seems to go far when Lottie is concerned as yet again she ends up finding another body… Will Lottie be able to get to the bottom of this case, or is she finally going to run out of chances? Also, how will things go in the search for Essex’s secret child, will they be found or was it just a ruse from Cressida to keep out of jail?

well Everett is looking for a daughter he never knew about. Lottie says she will be behind helping him.
Of course, there is another body, and this will not help either of them. Now that the daughter is in the picture (Evie) and the chaos she will create. Everyone pressuring Lottie to pick one of the guys, but she is still having trouble deciding on either Noah or Everett. How finding the murder is not going to be easy to find. But who is it? Let's hope that Lottie will not get hurt this time. Not to ruin anything but Noah drops a bomb shell. I still want Cormack out of the picture she is crazy and psycho. She just adds too drama like here is not enough already.

Shocking

Just when you think you know the characters. One goes and give you a shock of the century. Lottie has a lot going on with Everette and his new found daughter Evie. Lottie has become a mom by proxy.
But it’s the current murder that has taken place that Lottie needs to solve and fast. But with that murder come a very dark secret that has been silent for many many years. It’s finds itself way to the surface and it will affect many lives. But is it enough to commit murder again?

When it sounded like I was complaining, I think I was wrong. The further I read in this series, the more I realize that I am actually reading it to find out what's going to happen next between Lottie, Everett, and Noah. The mystery was still fun, and it led me on a wild chase to identify the villain. By the time we got to the big reveal, I wasn't surprised to discover who dunnit, but it did take me almost until the end to finally figure it out.

eek! more complications!

Cressida was telling the truth! Evie Baxter is alive and well.

Lottie steps up as mom to the girl, and Everett eagerly assumes the parental mantle.

And, of course, the murderer is promptly taken to task.

Wow another killer ending

Didn't see that coming as the comedy murder clash in this telling tale. A breath of fresh air in a way a story is told read all alone or in a series. Frankly, I'm all about the series.

Murder at the fashion show

This time the ghost is a rabbit, who sounds a lot like Miranda, in more ways than one, thinking about what rabbits are known for.

I enjoyed the new plot twists a variety actually throughout the story. Lottie seems to get more naive as the storylines continue. She invariably misses the underlying issues and believes the fairytale given. Eventually the lightbulb comes on. She’s a seasoned crime fighter and with abilities she’s completely aware of even though yes that somewhat changes. She used be more on the ball Investigation wise. Lord knows she still can’t figure out her heart versus her lust. Always wanting what’s not hers at the moment. It’s nauseating at this point. I no longer care who she chooses just choose!!

Snickerdoodle Secrets is the twentieth book in the Murder in the Mix Mystery series. This series stories builds on each other so I would suggest reading them in order to get the most out of it, but you could always read them as a stand alone if you wanted to and not be to far behind.
Lemon has a gift of seeing dead animal of those who will experience back luck soon, but lately deadly luck. Like all the books in this series, when Lottie sees a ghostly animal she knows death is soon to follow.
Snickerdoodle Secrets really holds a punch. This story has more secrets that are being reveal than just the killer hiding. Several secrets from the past are being discovered, some good some not so good. Some of the secrets are used to help discover the true killer. But the last chapter of the book packs a punch of a secret I dont’t think I would have seen coming even with a warning. Each new book in this series gets better and better and I get more excited for what the next books might hold. This book will not disappoint and I am eagerly waiting for the next story to see what Lottie will be up to next.

A good time for all

Snickerdoodle Secrets is the twentieth book in the Murder in the Mix series by Addison Moore and it's fantastic as always. Town baker Lottie Lemon is once again doomed to stumble upon a dead body. Using her ever-evolving transmundane abilities and with the help of a ghostly bunny, Lottie and friends must hunt for killer among the residents of Honey Hollow. Underneath the murder mystery remains the ongoing love triangle between Lottie, Everett and Noah. After the bombshell dropped at the end of the previous book, I was dying to find out what happened next and I definitely wasn't disappointed.

While this is a standalone, I highly recommend reading at least a few of the previous books in the series. This book is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page. You'll laugh, you'll cry and you'll fall in love with many of the hunky men surrounding the energetic heroine in this spirited story from a wonderful author.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

OMGosh!!!! Lottie and the crew are at it again. Dead bodies, cops, suspense, mystery and intrigue. Noah and Everett are still the good looking ones and the bakery is still making up scrumptious eats. This is such an amazing story and a wonderful addition to a phenomenal series. I just can't get enough of this series. The characters are relatable, fun, developed, and complex. The town is described with enough detail that you can close your eyes and see the whole of Honey Hollow in your mind. The story is well written, fun, exciting and keeps me interested from beginning to end. I'm never disappointed when I read one of Addison Moore's books and the Murder in the Mix series is no different, if you don't count Lottie's ability to see dead fur babies and the occasional dead person. Well done to the author. I'm looking forward to seeing where she takes us and the residents of Honey Hollow next.

Lottie, the Honey Hollow baker and part time sleuth, is at it again. She sees a rabbit at the gala. Since she has the ability to see the ghostly pets of a person who is soon to be dead, she knows that someone is up to no good. Who will it be and who did it?? In the meantime, Everett is searching for his child that Cressida recently told him about. She refuses to tell him where the child is or any other details about them. That will certainly complicate things. Lottie has promised to help him with his child. Lottie's love life is still complicated as she’s still dating Noah while being married to Everett. Then there’s the unexpected ending. Wow! What a plot twist! Can’t wait for the next book in the series!!

Get your tissues ready! This one will get you in all your feels!! Lottie has once again stumbled upon a body. Poor Mitzi has been strangled by one of her very own fashion scarves at her very own flash sale. It is up to Lottie and her new floopy eared, long since dead friend to solve this murder. Lottie certainly has her hands full enough with the case. Then comes along Everett's teenage daughter who is a sarcastic spitfire just like her father, but underneath it all she is a hurt little girl who just wants to be loved and accepted by her parents. Lottie is determined to love her like her own and give her the family she never had....but where does that leave Noah? Get to reading so you can be as mind blown as I was! I can't wait for the next book!!

Every book in the Murder in the Mix series can be read as a standalone from the mystery perspective, but honestly you should really start with book 1 and read them in order. They are quick, fun, entertaining reads.

Lottie Lemon just wants to fall in love, run her bakery, and live happily every after, but she talks to dead people, and they always seem to guide her and turn to her to solve the latest murder mystery. She is surrounded by an amazingly funny cast of characters that are always there to support her quest for the truth.

This is such a fun series. Easy to binge. Binge-reading is so much better than binge-watching, and this is definitely the sort of series that will keep you entertained while you read it.

Addison’s writing is as addicting as Lottie’s sweet treats! The murder in the mix series is a non stop keep you guessing series. That being said oh mylanta Snickerdoodle Secrets might have become one of my favorites in the series to date!
When another body is discovered by Lottie she makes it her mission to find a killer, while feeding the masses her delicious treats. The whole gang is here and then some to keep the twists, turns, and guesses coming. This is the perfect read to curl up with and submerge into the world of Honey Hollow!

This book is part of a series but can be read as a stand-alone, although I highly suggest going back to book one and starting there.

I am really loving all of the books in this series They just get better and better as they go. Lottie and the gang seem to find dead bodies and intrigue every chance they get. One of these days Lottie, Noha and Judge Baxter will all figure out how their relationship is going to work out and then I think things in Honey Hollow will start to get really interesting. I just love this series to death.. The entire gang just feels like part of the family.

I am glad to say that Addison seems to keep coming up with these books and keeping me hooked and up at night reading when I should be in bed sleeping.

I read this book to satisfy a book challenge that required the cover to have a rabbit on the cover...

I had such a hard time finishing this book! I had to pause it several times before I forced myself to suffer through and finish.

The writing felt so whimsy and the storyline was so bizarre!

Holy smokes! That’s the only words that came to mind while reading this entire book! I have often said other books were my favorite but the characters in this one, along with the many storylines definitely give the others a run for their money! It’s hard to tell much more without giving anything away so I will wrap this up with a warning.....be prepared to fall in love with Everett all over again!

Addison Moore knocks the one out of the park! This book in the Murder in the Mix series is bursting at the seams with all the different plot twists! Lottie Lemon is not your average baker. In Honey Hollow she is known for so much more--including discovering dead bodies! It will take Lottie, Everett, Noah, and all of her other friends and family to uncover this recent murder--not to mention some spectral friends.
