A. A. Warren – Recipe for a Space Fantasy Author:

Mix one part Star Wars with one part Star Trek. Stir in liberal amounts of Conan the Barbarian (books, movies, comics… all varietals.) Toss with Dune, Flash Gordon, Dungeons & Dragons, and Saturday morning cartoons. Add a pinch of video games, and season to taste with comic books, Steven King novels, B-Movies, and whatever speculative entertainment you have on hand. Let simmer in a New Jersey suburb until partially mature, then finish in La La Land, Southern California.

Sear with Godzilla’s atomic breath. Serve chilled with a beer and cheese platter.

“Victory or Death.”
Fast paced action and adventure, an amazing combination of SciFi/Fantasy, with alien ancient artifacts, mysterious power wielding sorceress, an incombustible warrior..it gave me no respite, from beginning to end, a rollercoaster! “Orion’s blazing bow!” This book has totally snagged me, way beyond my expectations! The writer continued to hold my attention without time to breathe, jumping from one scene to another, from one discovery to another. The first chapters were a truly emotional, lump in throat, shed tears moments. The whole story is captivating, a fight for Talon’s own freedom and of the rest of beings. Looking forward to read book #2, Talon The Raider!

First things first, I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

As is my wont, let's talk about the narrator first. He has a good assortment of voices and skillfully controls his tempo.

As often happens with deep-voiced male narrators, however, he struggles a bit with the feminine voices. And most of the narration is devoid of any emotional inflections.

Now, the story.

Let me start by saying I didn't fully realize what I was getting into, and in many ways this story simply isn't my cup of tea.

In hindsight, having now looked at the full Amazon description, I realize I should have read that before listening to the book.

I was expecting more Conan-influenced arena combat, sorcerers, and dark gods and just a little bit of science fiction. That's the message I got from the cover as well as the short description I read.

However, for not being the sort of thing I would normally read, I found I enjoyed it more than I would have expected, had I known what to expect.

Talon is an interesting character, strongly reminiscent of the warrior of the same name from the old fantasy film, The Sword and the Sorcerer.

The other members of Talon's team are well characterized, if not quite so fleshed out as Talon himself.

There is some really intriguing history and mythology in the universe the author has created, and apart from a few snags (a few clunky sentences, passive voice, and while not technically incorrect, using "grit" instead of "gritted" as a past tense word rankles me a bit), the prose is well written and error free.

And finally, in spite of being a little on the predictable side, the ending was exciting, well put together, and satisfying.

If you're primarily a fantasy reader and looking to inject a touch of Sci-fi into it, this probably isn't the book for you. However, if you genuinely enjoy science fiction and want to try some with a heroic fantasy flavor, this might be exactly the thing you're looking for!

Going into Talon, I did not know what to expect, having little experience with the literary Sci-fi genre. However I was pleasantly surprised with the fun filled and adventurous narrative put forth by the author. The characters are a delight to read, especially Talon. Talon is a refreshing protagonist and a lethal warrior who is joined by others on an adventure through the galaxy that left me wanting more and more of Talon, whose character evolved beautifully throughout the novel. I did not even want it to end. The most refreshing part for me was the fact that Talon The Slayer did not strictly feel like a sci fi novel, but an action filled and adventurous one with a golden heart, fun banters between the characters and an interesting main antagonist. A wonderful mixture of Conan and Guardians of the Galaxy, Talon The Slayer has me excited for the next book in the series. Hats off to the author.

Excellent read. Kept me interested throughout. Plenty of action and a few light spicy parts. Thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to next book in the series. I definitely recommend this book and this author. I have read a few of his other books and he has yet to lose my interest

Talon Slayer is a fast paced and action packed book! Even though I thought this book would be an even mix of sci-fi and fantasy instead of mainly sci-fi, it was still a very interesting and good read. Warren did a great job with the world building and character personalities and their backstories. I wouldn’t mind seeing what happens next in this adventure!
Travis did a really good job narrating this book. He did different voices for all of the characters and pulled them off really well. His performance kept me engaged and entertained throughout the whole book and really brought it to life!

This was a fun title and brought me back to the days of films like Krull, Flash Gordon, Conan, and The 5 th Element. The main character reminded me of He-Man with some wickedly advanced weaponry. I am definitely going to check out the second title in this series as well.

Honestly, I hadn’t read any sci-fi or fantasy for more than 3/4th of a decade before I started this book. The only sci-fi/fantasy books I’d read in my life were children’s books and this exotic book that starts the Tales of Talon series blew me away. It was a refreshing change of pace as I’d mostly read action thrillers set in the real, current world from the last few years.

A.A. Warren made his name in the literary field with his neo-noir series built around his protagonist Thomas Caine, which he writes under the name Andrew Warren. But he’d been a big fan of sci-fi, classic pulp books, and Marvel comics from decades.

The universe of this series built around Talon is influenced by Star Wars, Guardians of the Galaxy, Conan, John Carter, Dune, Flash Gordon and lots of Dungeons & Dragons.

Talon, a young hulking muscular warrior, is initially a gladiator slave fighting his way to freedom. One of his eyes is a red crystal and his favourite weapons are a plasma axe and two scimitars.

I have to mention, this fictional world is eons in the future where humanity has colonized the galaxies and are living side by side with alien life forms. The political condition is similar to Star wars where an evil dark lord and his General have staged a coup against Prince Lucian of the Tygon Dominion. The conflict between Lucian’s rebels and the other evil players force Talon into a cosmic adventure.

Talon is broken free from his master. But due to biological ID scanners, he’d be recognized as a slave and returned to his captors. So, Lucian offers Talon his freedom in return for helping out with an operation. The mission proves to be a personal journey where Talon regains his memories and finds his purpose and his race.

Enough spoilers. The fun thing about Talon’s crew is that it consists of Selene – an immortal alien sorceress who has a mystic connection to Talon, Zobo – a humanoid wolf alien who is an aged military captain and an experienced pilot, and Arva – a former assassin who was given a purpose and rescued by Zobo. The chemistry in this team is fun and hilarious at times.

Talon’s social interactions and his relationships are fun and weirdly exciting that draw comparisons to comic book characters. His bond with Selene and Arva is a fun triangle.

The array of minor side characters could have been built and developed much better. Like I said, this book felt more like a comic-book or a graphic novel than an actual book in terms of narration, characters and storytelling. And this is not necessarily a bad thing.

With fights of all kinds and a heavy dose of adventure, this book felt very similar to Guardians of the Galaxy and many other cosmic series of Marvel comics. The plot ends up being about a conflict between two space gods, with Talon the key to solve the problem.

This has just the right amount of mystical fantasy elements and a good amount of sci-fi and technical elements. But the narration does not go in depth with both. The narrative is short, crisp, fast and not in the level of detail that would have explored this universe a bit more.

The book felt more like a graphic novel or a movie than a prose book with words due to its quick visualization and crisp flow of events. Hopefully Mr. Warren may one day make this Talon series into a graphic novel and bring out a more fantastic experience.

I was seriously influenced by this book as it made me wanna read more in the Space Fantasy genre. More than that, this book was the push I needed to green-light and develop my ideas for numerous series in the Space Fantasy genre. Hopefully I’ll start writing my projects in this genre sometime this year when my current projects clear up.

I’ll be reading Talon the Raider which is the second book in this series sometime soon. I can let you know that Mr. Warren has finished writing the third book, Talon the Hunter and it will hopefully release soon.

If you’re like me and read only a few select genres, I think Talon the Slayer is a great place to branch out your reading experience. Trust me, it is more fun than watching the current Star Wars movies or reading the volumes of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Was torn between giving this book three stars or four stars, ultimately went with three although it was good enough that I'm considering looking for the next novel in the series. Unlike a lot of other Amazon novels I've read...

Premise: Conan the Barbarian in a vague/legally distinct Star Wars-like setting with its own mythology and cosmology (basically it's Life versus Death instead of Light versus Dark.)

Review: After an opening/prequel chapter that drags on a bit and doesn't really add to the plot except introduce a tomb raider that the protagonist almost strangles later (and honestly probably should have,) we are introduced to Talon the Slayer. The plot quickly goes from zero to sixty in the span of about half a chapter as the protagonist moves from one action scene to another often with little downtime in between. And without spoiling too much, the novel uses many of the same story beats as Star Wars Episode IV. We have an exiled prince fighting to reclaim his throne from a rogue general, a planet-destroying super-weapon, and a plot involving a long-lost warrior order. Overall it's not bad but it's not perfect.

I felt a bit of a problem with pacing, as Talon moves from one fight to the next with relatively little down time. This keeps the plot moving but at the same time the setting doesn't get a lot of room to breath and grow. As for characters... the characters are perhaps a bit simplistic but they're not particularly obnoxious or badly written. For the most part they're a nice palate cleanser after nearly a decade of Hollywood tripe. Talon himself is alright, very taciturn and combative at times (although I probably wouldn't have even noticed if it wasn't apparent the author was playing with it to either speed up or slow down the plot as needed,) but otherwise not all that bad of a guy for a "Conan in a space opera setting" protagonist. The only characters that irked me were the two antagonists. The moment I read them together it was apparent that they are both of the "too stupid to actually win" school of villainy. Their downfall was enjoyable but predictable.

Despite my complaints though, I did enjoy the book. It was a fun little sci-fi action romp, something I needed.

Conan Meets Star Wars

Talon the Slayer is the first book in the Tales of Talon series and it was epic! It was a fast, fun, adventure through space that conjured up images of Conan the Barbarian and Star Wars around every corner. The story is not a short book, but I still felt like I was at the credits far too soon because of how engrossed in the story I was. If space adventures or warrior heroes are your type of story then you'll love this book.

Talon is sold into a life of slavery and battling in the arenas as a gladiator from an early age. He's doomed to a life of fighting and death until a mysterious sorceress finds him and drags him into an intergalactic war that gives Talon a purpose and a chance at freedom. Determined to win his freedom without being a slave to anyone else's plans, he sets off with a crew into an adventure that will change the galaxy for better or worse.

This was a fun book. The characters are who they are. If you're looking for a story where the characters change and evolve into someone new, this isn't it and that's not a bad thing. For me, this story brought to mind thoughts of barbarian heroes like Conan. Talon is a warrior and will do things his way. He's not stupid, he's not a pawn, and he'd just assume chop you to pieces with his battle axe than to hear your plans to rule the galaxy. The story was a blast and I'm looking forward to seeing what adventures await Talon next. If space adventures or barbarian warrior stories is your type of thing, you won't be disappointed by this one.

There are some adult situations in this book, so I would recommend it for more mature teens or adults.

This is a truly fun filled, action packed adventure... I knew that I was in for a good time from the very start!
It was advertised as a "Conan the Barbarian meets Flash Gordon" pulp fiction, but I don't think that's quite right... it's close, but more like Conan meets Star Wars, and when I figured that out, I kept hearing John Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra in my head! LOL
I can always count on it being a sure thing when I get a book narrated by Travis Baldree! He's really, really good at his craft!
Grab a plate of snacks, and sit back to enjoy the story! You decide if the London Symphony Orchestra plays out as a backdrop! LOL

Interesting premise, well-written, intriguing characters and excellent worldbuilding, intriguing mysteries and questions that I’d like to see answered, but for a story that’s billing itself as a sci-fi Conan, I wish it was just ten percent grittier.

For example (and I don’t think this counts as a spoiler since it’s at the beginning) things kick off with Talon fighting a bunch of other gladiators for his freedom, but they’re all robot gladiators. Much better would have been for him to fight a bunch of other gladiators who had been promised freedom for victory as well, then saluting all the others. It would have underlined his character much better than a bunch of extemporaneous speeches about free will.

So more He-Man than Conan. But I can see myself reading the next one.

Science Fantasy. This is a fun book. It starts out with this man in a fighting arena. It's a common trope. I've seen it in Angel, Supergirl, Star Wars, and so many others. But it's a good trope. He's never been to any other world before, or at least, never seen any other world. He's a slave, and confined to his quarters. He gets his hundred victories and is supposed to be freed.

Well, that doesn't happen.

This is full of magic, space battles, unique species/aliens, and a ton of fun. I enjoyed it. I wouldn't say it's my favorite book, but it's definitely a 4 Star in my book.

For me Talon the Slayer was Conan the Barbarian and Star Wars mixed into a story together. You get the fantasy elements of Conan fighting his way through his enemies with the space battles and tech of Star Wars.

It's a comic book with lots of action - and that usually makes me happy. But there's very little story and no character development - which one should expect in a comic book. Too light for me.

Victory or Death

It felt like the former when the book didn't end in the latter for me, though it felt like it most of the time. While the settings were fine, and the action intense, none of the main characters ever really seemed to develop from just words on a page into characters in a story. That made this whole book feel like a huge drag and drain to read, sadly. The real hero, in my opinion, is the illustrator because the cover is part of why I stepped into the book to begin with, and what kept me going until the very end, albeit slowly.

Good pacing interesting story elements, it shows a hero or antihero not sure which finding his own destiny. I wish the author luck and I hope to read more from him in the future.

Fast moving page turner!
It you like Star Wars, Guardians or Masters of the Universe, you'll enjoy this one.
There is a good bunch of villainous corporate types and sniveling politicos up against our protagonist heroes.
So why wait?
Just go for it!
