My Big Fat Greek Family!
Billionaire Adam Nicolos left his parents’ very successful and lucrative business in Greece to pursue his own business dreams in New York. When his four friends (including his brother Silas and cousin Loukas) drag him onto a cruise ship bound for the Greek island of Mykonos for Loukas’s thirtieth birthday party, he’s reluctant; he lost his wife and has a strained relationship with his parents, who didn’t attend his wedding or his wife’s funeral and want him to marry a Greek woman instead of the American he married and lost.
Loukas’s family owns the cruise line, so Adam can board a day ahead of the passengers. That’s when he meets Zoe, a makeup artist who desperately wants children but can’t have them. When his ex-girlfriend Elaina shows up on the same cruise ship (what a coincidence!), he convinces a reluctant Zoe to pose as his girlfriend to scare her off. All that happens is that Elaina digs in harder and speaks poison to Zoe, telling her that she doesn’t belong in her and Adam’s world. Adam disembarks right away and shares a few carefree days on the island without Elaina, but they must go to his parents’ villa for the party.
Before the nighttime party, both Loukas’s and Adam’s parents put on a daytime show featuring a volleyball tournament. Unsurprisingly, Adam is paired with Elaina, while Zoe is paired with Silas. Loukas serves as commentator and is blown away by Zoe’s volleyball performance—she never told anyone about her high school and college team experience. With a sprained ankle and a targeted hit into Elaina’s torso, Zoe wins the championship and the right to dance with Silas first at his “birthday ball”, as Loukas now calls the evening event.
Before entering the ballroom, Zoe overhears Adam’s mother complaining that Zoe isn’t Greek and is after him for his fortune, not realizing that Elaina is the gold digger his mother is accusing Zoe of being. Elaina also hears and whispers to Zoe that it’s obvious that she doesn’t belong. Zoe leaves in tears.
When Adam finds her, Zoe says she won’t get between him and his parents and bows out of their “deal”, knowing it will pain them both. Adam goes back to New York with Abby and tells off Elaina, burning his bridges in Greece.
Two months later, Zach confronts Adam in his office, tells him to stop moping, and talk to his parents. Adam takes his advice and discovers that his parents did come to his wife’s funeral but didn’t go where they’d be seen because they were afraid of being rejected by their son. Adam hasn’t seen them and assumed they didn’t care enough to come. With everything in the open, they reconcile and he asks them an important question.
Meanwhile, Zoe has gone back to New York and has tried unsuccessfully to get a makeup artist job. When she finally lands a gig at a fashion show, she doesn’t know that it’s Adam’ friend Tanner’s show until he’s greeted by one of the models. Adam is with him.
It turns out that the question Adam asked his parents was whether they’d give permission for him to propose to Zoe! She says yes, Abby gets to be the flower girl, and they live happily ever after!
I highly recommend this book.
