An orphaned boy, uncontrollable magic, and a destiny to recover a nation’s honor.
Ren has passed the trial to become an apprentice sorcerer, along with four others. Together they must adapt to life on the floating city, that is the Amethyst Nation.
Alongside Ren is Shaya, the twins form the Emerald Nation: Abaze and Adaku, and a young boy from the heart of the Ruby Nation: Goban. They’re forced to work together as a team if they want to advance, but each apprentice has something holding them back. Their instructor isn’t helpful, and would rather be anywhere else.
It falls upon Ren and Goban to lead the class through their group test. If they fail, Ren’s hopes for becoming a sorcerer will disappear.
Nicholi (N A K Baldron) is the international best-selling author of the Chronicles of the Seventh Realm, where Science, Magic, and Two Worlds Collide.
He lives in a small town outside of Austin, Texas with his life partner Sabetha Danes and their daughter whom they homeschool. After years of living in the city with the big house, they chose to downsize to their tiny house and dedicate their lives to art. Their long-term goal is to live on a sailboat and see the world.
I am enjoying the novellas written by Nak Baldron that are set in this fantasy world. Each one has its own flavor, like a bite-sized story within a bigger story. I never know what to expect, but each one is a page-turner with great characters! The Apprentices' Library is similar to an academy story where the action is around students learning to hone their magic. The dynamic between the different personalities is believable. Find out what happens!
I received an ARC. This is my honest and voluntary review.
Oh. My. Goodness. Twist at the end! Smashingly successful installment in the series! But first, let me begin at the beginning. Ren has been accepted in the Amethyst Nation as an apprentice sorcerer and he is excited and anxious to start his new life. Now, with the other apprentices, he begins to study magic and the how's and why's. But his tablet no longer works and he realizes without it, he is quickly falling behind in his reading. And as they are told that they will be judged individually and as a team, Ren realizes he is holding his team back. When he realizes this, he really starts to grow. And he sees things in his fellow apprentices he had missed before. The bond between some of them grows as the bond between others loses strength. There is growth in all the apprentices by the end of the book and it is so amazing to watch it all come together. It's a quick read, but I sped through it because of the story. It's so well written and really draws you in. I am so excited to read the next book!
Joining the newest apprentices, this book really builds further foundations for the different nations socerer prospects within the Seven Realms. You get further insight into Ren's personal shortcomings, meanwhile he builds meaningful friendships that give him support through his struggles. Lots of questions left suspended at the end, left me anticipating more background information on multiple characters and wondering not only what will come next, but what's going on back in some of their home nations.
Ren and 4 other pass the initial exam to become apprentices and start their training. Several of them have some struggles to overcome, as they make their way through their studies. Abaze is a jerk, and I hope that he can get over himself at some point. I really enjoyed watching the others make their way towards becoming a good team. The twist at the end was unexpected and I am looking forward to the next book. I can't wait to see what happens next.
What an excellent read. Due to other commitments I hadn’t read this earlier but having now done so I have to say how brilliant it was. The characters interact well together and it’s hard to put the book down . I was glued to it. Look forward to the next installment.
The 5 individuals (Ren, Shaya, Adaku, Abaze and Goban), who passed the Mage trials start their training. They quickly learn that things are not as easy as they thought it was going to be. The instructor gives them very little assistance except to tell them to study in the huge complex library and when tests of different types will be held. Adaku is already trained but studying hard since her brother Abaze is not. He thinks since he is a Prince he does not have to do anything so she must carry him in each test. Shaya, Ren and Goban form a group but study separately. When Ren says he would rather study alone, Shaya and Goban agree. They meet for meals but study separately. Ren is failing badly because he does not know how to read regular books and times. He has only ever used an ereader but it does not work in an ancient Library. Goban saves his bacon by summarizing the books and giving them to Ren. Definitely, a great read even though I felt like someone should have kicked Prince Abaze's butt and read the book to see if they do!
good The apprentices have been selected and now have to study so they can pass a test where they are to work together. After the test there is a feast where an apprentice is chosen by a mentor.
This series keeps getting better. This is the fourth installment in Ren's tale, and it picks up where the last ended.
Ren finds himself as an apprentice in the Amethyst Nation's sorcery school. We find the five students getting acquainted with each other and their new surroundings. The main purpose is to be taught and tested so that they can be chosen by a Sorcerer to be their pupil.
It is apparent right away that Ren is falling behind in his studies, but his new friends are right there to help him. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters better through this story. It was amazing to get to watch how they grew not only as individuals but as a group as well.
This is such a good story that I found myself cheering out loud at the ending. I will leave that part for you to read for yourself, and hopefully you do the same. I would highly recommend this book, and the entire series. I am already impatiently waiting for the next one to see what happens to Ren and his friends
Five young apprentice sorcerers starting school at the Academy. This is called Ren’s story but it is really about all five of the apprentices. They all come to the academy ready to learn but Ren has a problem with all of the reading. He can’t read as fast as the others. Goban has a hard time with speaking mentally. Ablaze is just lazy and doesn’t want to put in the work. Shaya and Adaku seem to have the most skills so far. But they have to work together in order to pass their first test and gain a mentor sorcerer. But Abaze doesn’t want anything to do with the other except for his sister Adaku. He thinks he is better than them and preys on Goban. What will happen if they can’t pass the test? I loved these characters and can’t wait to find out what awaits them in their schooling
4.5 stars. I’m as torn between perfect 5 and not. A wonderful continuation to the series of Ren and Shaya. Moving on in the apprenticeship to become sorcerers each character had to overcome hardship mentally and emotionally to connect with the ways magic. Easily able to connect with the characters and a quick and solid novella.
