There aren’t any actual monsters in the dark. At least, not the kind of monsters that scared children imagine as they huddled under their blankets. That’s what Shawn told himself. But Shawn is about to find out that the reality that has comforted him since childhood is subject to change. Zombies are real, and Shawn’s about to come eye to eye with one of them. He’s just a guy with a borrowed baseball bat, trying to figure out how to get home. With the help of a new friend, maybe he might make it out without becoming one of the monsters himself.
This was a short bonus chapter for The First 30 Days told from the POV of Shaun. I like that the author is telling different POV stories from the book and really enjoy reading this world. I can’t get enough of it. Reading how circumstances beyond the characters control brought them together really brought the story more alive. This was an extremely short enjoyable read and I just wish there were more.
Great, quick bonus chapter for THE FIRST 30 DAYS. We get a smidge of how it all began for Shawn. Just enough to keep me happy after finishing the main book. I really hope the author continues on with more of this world. I need more!!
Shawn goes for a late night gym session and is surprised to find that he is the only one there. The sound of multiple sirens outside has him wondering if something bad has happened and he starts to think about the flu virus that is said to be killing people, something he thinks is an exaggeration. As he tries to leave to get to his car, he is confronted by a man who looks violent or high and Shawn is a bit concerned about getting by him, and starts to look for another exit from the dark building.
This is a very short sort of preview chapter for book one in the series which I already own and will hopefully be reading soon. Shawn comes across as a normal guy and I liked the setting for this chapter.
2,5/5. War halt nichts Besonderes, war aber auch nicht furchtbar. Ist halt ein Bonuskapitel, das ich nur gelesen habe, da ich eine Reihe auch zu Ende lesen will, die ich einmal angefangen habe.
Okay, so at the end of “The first 30 days” it asks if you want more and tells you to get this book, which is about 1/2 a chapter long and tells you nothing of importance you didn’t already know.
A short story detailing the beginning days of the male MC, Shawn, from The First 30 Days. It's a quick and enjoyable read that helps flesh out his character.
A late-night workout session at the gym leaves Shawn trapped in the building with an office geek and a baseball bat for company as the zompoc breaks out around them. This was an interesting story, decently written, with enough internal monologue for me to empathize with poor, sweaty Shawn and his need to go home. The title and the cover of the story threw me, however. "First Contact," for me, presupposes alien contact, not necessarily an outbreak of zombie proportions. And the bat on the cover, in all its Lucy-inspired, barbed-wire-wrapped glory, had me envisioning crazy, vengeful Neegans running around espousing paramilitary bullshit.
I'm glad I got neither of these assumptions, but this story instead. Nicely done.
