Rate this book
The Commonwealth’s attempt to negotiate with the K’Soth Empire has failed. Dr Marcus Cuvier is missing, presumed killed by the Emperor’s hand along with most of his delegation, and now the Imperial security forces search for the last few survivors who have now become desperate fugitives amidst the vast, sprawling metropolis of the Imperial capital. Meanwhile, Admiral Rylance marshals her fleet to move against the uprising in the Commonwealth’s border systems and prepares to bring the Navy to bear against the human separatist movement calling itself the Shining Dawn. Whilst in the 61 Cygni system, in the wake of a terrorist bombing, the Commonwealth’s Intelligence Bureau attempts to root out the culprits and bring them to justice. But there is a greater threat to all of humanity. The K’Soth Emperor is about to unleash his vast fleets and numberless legions against the Commonwealth and crush all of human civilisation beneath his heel. Now only the Commonwealth’s hopelessly outclassed armed forces stand between humanity and annihilation at the hands of the Empire

Top shelf military space opera

Very highly populated genre for sure but nevertheless I’m a big fan of Dan Worth’s universe building.

This is Book 2 of the prequel to the Progenitor trilogy. The story focusses on the buildup to the Ksoth war but in the meantime gradually reveals the underlying (bigger) plot which was put in motion by much sinister forces.

Great read for fans of military sci-fi.

**Spoilers from here on**
Rather unbalanced storytelling this time. Some parts of the book read like it’s actually a first draft, whilst other parts are brilliant (the Klondike battle, events at the Ksoth research facility, insight into the Arkari plot, etc).

Like book1, this episode also could do without the entire Gates-Cally-Costanzo storyline. Utterly boring and pointless. Fully skipped their chapters. Again. Shining Dawn overall is far from credible. Needed much more work (to lay out a more sinister reason to betray humanity) but then again that’s also totally unnecessary. I guarantee you an editor would cut these bits out and instead look for more science, ships weapons techs etc.

I’m critical of the a/m bits because I love the author’s work. Can’t wait for book 3! Thank you.

A worthy second book in the successor trilogy. The world building and attention to detail is excellent as always and the action never flags.

Well thought out, great attention to detail, good atmosphere building

If I have a quibble it is that some of the individual stores could do with slight trimming down

But a fun read nevertheless

Another great sci fi piece by Dan Worth, the journey continues as the civilisations start to bed in amongst the overall plot - next stop book 3
