In this dark, suspenseful thriller, Alex North weaves a multi-generational tale of a father and son caught in the crosshairs of an investigation to catch a serial killer preying on a small town.
After the sudden death of his wife, Tom Kennedy believes a fresh start will help him and his young son Jake heal. A new beginning, a new house, a new town. Featherbank.
But the town has a dark past. Twenty years ago, a serial killer abducted and murdered five residents. Until Frank Carter was finally caught, he was nicknamed "The Whisper Man," for he would lure his victims out by whispering at their windows at night.
Just as Tom and Jake settle into their new home, a young boy vanishes. His disappearance bears an unnerving resemblance to Frank Carter's crimes, reigniting old rumors that he preyed with an accomplice. Now, detectives Amanda Beck and Pete Willis must find the boy before it is too late, even if that means Pete has to revisit his great foe in prison: The Whisper Man.
And then Jake begins acting strangely. He hears a whispering at his window...
Alex North was born in Leeds, England, where he now lives with his wife and son. The Whisper Man was inspired by North's own little boy, who mentioned one day that he was playing with "the boy in the floor." Alex North is a British crime writer who has previously published under another name.
When I first picked up the Whisper Man I had no idea about the book except for the cover. The cover and title sure scared me and I have put off reading this in fear my imagination can get the best of me. I was wrong and this was not the case at all; not because I am wearing my big girl pants, but the story is actually a poignant dark mystery, and a well written British crime drama and a suspenseful thriller.
Tom Kennedy and his son Jake move to Featherbank after his wife’s sudden death, to get a fresh start. However, death follows them by Tom discovering the body of an unsolved murder of a child in their new home, and a recent child abduction and murder in their new town.
I loved this book very much. Once I started, there was no putting this down. This book is the best cure for anyone in a reading slump! It had the right amount of mystery, suspense and hair raising moments.
Alex North’s writing is brilliant. The characters all had depth and complexity that is interweaved into the story with no loose ends. It is also a story about how a family navigates loss weather death or separation and how love and family are the ties that bind.
This book is so captivatingly executed that I couldn't put it down. I wanted to. I really did because there were times that it scared the life out of me. "The Whisper Man" is the thing of nightmares, but not for the reason one would expect. I got to a point where I saw this book turning into a crude, vulgar horror-nightmare and I just didn't want to continue reading. But I couldn't reject such a well-written story, so I persevered and I am SO GLAD I DID. This story was horrifying; don't get me wrong. But in a way, it was tastefully horrifying in a manner that didn't take cheap, easy shots at just physical fear. It pushed the boundaries of the emotions of fear that really projected to the reader in a way that was extraordinarily morbid and beautiful at the same time. Simplistically, this book was phenomenal and definitely worth the read- even for paranoid, panic-stricken readers such as myself!
Just finished our Group Read!!!!! I will say that books involving kidnappings are ones that I tend to read sparingly, and I’m not sure why that is exactly. I think that’s why I tend to stay away from police procedurals in general. However, this book intrigued me before it was even out, and I was eager to read it!! I’m glad I did. I thought it was engaging, the characters were relatable, the ending was excellent and overall it was very well written. 4 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Great complex characters and multiple narrators weave together an unsettling story right down to the last sentence. Well done, I will definitely check out more by this author.
This is a well written suspenseful thriller. Clever story design with excellent side stories that add dimension that add to the story without taking it off course. A couple of very creepy moments which are difficult for my personal taste, not bad enough to keep me up at night, but keep it from a “5” rating.
Tom Kennedy and his son Jake move to the small town of Featherbank after the death of his wife. Years before, young boys Jake’s age, were abducted and murdered by “the Whisper Man”. He’s now in jail but another boy has been taken and then Jake starts hearing whispers at his window too.
I am on page 123/355 and am about to DNF. Who can change my mind? I read all the glowing reviews and just don't get it. The plot, for a supposed thriller, is agonizingly slow and the characters are flat, whiny, and one-dimensional...I do not understand all the hype...?? Update: finished it...eh.
I am SO SO HAPPY that i chose to read this. It was soooo good and incredibly written in a way that its easy to understand and not confusing at all. I love love jake and tom somuch. It unexpectedly made me cry with the last few chapters. It made me feel every emotions, i never even think that was possible. Also, this is by far the only book that made me feel goosebumps several times !!
April Read.....The Whisper Man by Alex North ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. A recently widowed father sets out with his young son to start fresh. While trying to connect and build a relationship with his son, Tom Kennedy finds himself not only trying to save his son from his own mental and emotional demons, but even the possibility of physical ones as well.
What a complete disappointment.....was so looking forward to this but that's two days am not getting back , Alex north is no Stephen king either...it could of been so much better with the imaginary friend the son conjures up boo !!

It was a great read. Very emotional father/son relationship gave this horrorish thriller mystery some relief from the built up tension. I enjoyed how everything that confused me came together in the end.
THIS MIGHT BE MY FAV BOOK EVER. THIS IS EVERYTHING I’VE EVER WANTED IN A THRILLER. SO TERRIFYING AND BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN!!! I will accept no negative criticism on this one!! Sorry not sorry!!! A MUST READ
Every time I read one of Alex North’s my heart it’s on a roller coaster, honestly, there’s no other author that can make me feel a variety of emotions they way he does.
Full disclosure, I listened on audiobook and I fear I missed some things - just wasn’t as hooked as other story lines have gotten me. Will definitely be giving it a re-read.
When i started it I was a little confused. The more I read the more everything made sense. It was almost like a puzzle that came together at the end. I won’t lie when I would read it at night I would have to turn on a funny tv show to fall asleep too
If you leave a door half open, soon you’ll hear the whispers spoken. If you play outside alone, soon you won’t be going home. If your window’s left unlatched, you’ll hear him tapping at the glass. If you’re lonely, sad, and blue, the Whisper Man will come for you.
I was really looking forward to this book and it did not disappoint. North delivered a book with just the right amount of make-you-shiver moments.
After the sudden death of his wife Tom Kennedy attempts a new start with his son Jake. Their new town however holds dark secrets of its own in the form of a serial killer-The Whisper Man. Twenty years later a child is abducted and killed in a similar way in spite of the Whisper Man being in jail. Copy Cat or is there a deeper link?
The progression of the story was almost flawless (down to the very last line!).I found it to be just the right length with great characters.
