The true life experiences of RAF Pilot Officer Ron James, who was sent to the Dutch East Indies at the end of World War II to help with the release of tens of thousands of prisoners of war and internees who were held by the Japanese in the prison camps of Java. Being one of the first to arrive, he found himself embroiled in a colonial war that was developing as a result of the Indonesians' struggle for independence from the Dutch. This is a light-hearted, well written, personal account of his work as Embarkation Officer and Movements Control Officer at Air Headquarters in Batavia. It also gives a concise history of the events that took place.
Enjoyed the book although the outline does not match the content. The author was a young scales who enjoyed drinking and was quite sociable as young folks are but I was expecting something g more on the returning internees,he skips lightly over this but does go into detail about the brutality they suffered from the Japanese and the Malayan people. An interesting book, I enjoyed it,e enjoyed so.e of his escapades.he also knew how to ruffle a feather or two.
