Flame and Ash

Rate this book
Witchbane Novel #4.

One hundred years ago, a sheriff’s posse killed dark warlock Rhyfel Gremory, but his witch-disciples escaped, and their magic made them nearly immortal. To keep their power, each year one of the witch-disciples kills a descendant of one of the men in the posse, a twelve-year cycle that has cost dozens of lives, including that of Seth Tanner’s brother, Jesse

Seth rescued Evan Malone from one of the witches, and they’ve fallen in love despite the danger and chaos, going on the road to complete the quest and bring an end to the ritual murders. Their relationship is new, their emotions are raw, and the danger is real. It’s a challenge to find their way as a couple while they’re on the road together in the close quarters of Seth’s RV, training in magic and combat skills to fight off a supernatural killer.

In pursuit of the next witch-disciple, Seth and Evan team up with older hunters Milo and Toby as their quest to stop a century-long killing spree takes them to a small town in the Blue Ridge Mountains. They’re ahead of the sacrifice cycle, with plans to stop the murders and kill the dark witch. Only this time, the hunters become the hunted when the witch knows they’re coming to get him, and has deadly plans of his own. When their lives are on the line, will love be enough?

Flame and Ash contains sexually explicit content intended for adults 18 and over.

Didn't know this was the third book in the series and it seems like the series follows the same people or couple. But I did enjoy this paranormal romance anywho, found it very fun story with compelling romance. Not sure if I want to start the series from the beginning or not.

A Joyfully Jay review.

Flame and Ash is the third book in Morgan Brice’s Witchbane series. This series has a really interesting premise that grabbed me from the first book. Each year for about a century, one of twelve witch-disciples kills one of the descendants of the sheriff’s posse that killed their leader, Rhyfel Gremory. Brice really has a knack for urban fantasy and I really enjoy the world building in this series and the creative ways magic is incorporated into the real world. I also really like Seth and Evan together and am enjoying the development of their relationship. I still think the men are at times quick to jump to the worst conclusions, but I like the way they support one another. I also like seeing Seth training Evan in magic and the way they are becoming real partners, both romantically and as hunters. In this story, we also get some nice side characters with Toby and Milo, which helps to widen the world building, as well as to show the close connection the older men have with the younger pair. So there is a lot here that I find really appealing.

Another awesome read in the Morgan Brice's 'Witchbane' series! Full review to follow soonish!

There's work, there's vacations, there are working vacations and then there's...travels with Seth and Evan. It's unlike any working vacation you could ever imagine.

Before I get into anything in terms of specifics let me just say if you haven't read the previous stories in this series and by read I mean read or listened to the audio, I strongly recommend doing this to get the full background on Seth and Evan. Also this series connects to the authors "Badlands" series and to some of her stories that are written under the authors name of Gail Z. Martin. However, when it comes to reading these stories or even the 'Badlands' stories it's definitely an individual choice. While I've read the 'Badlands' series, I haven't read any of the other stories that are connected to this series and so far I haven't found it to be a problem.

Seth and Evan met back in the first book when Seth rescued Evan from one of the dark witch Rhyfel Gremory's disciples (for more on this just read the blurb). Since then these two have discovered that they have a few things in common the most important being that they're attracted to each other and they both want to see Gremory's disciples defeated to ensure not just their safety but that of the descendants of the deputies who originally destroyed Gremory.

I've been enjoying this series on audio but when the opportunity for this story was presented I decided that I didn't want to wait for the audio...not that I won't get it when it's available because rest assured...I will. But I was just to curious to see what was in store for Seth and Evan as they travel to North Carolina seeking to once again do battle with one of Gremory's disciples and save yet another descendant of the orginal posse and this time they've got help...not just the intended victim and his boyfriend but the boys are meeting up with Milo and Toby, Seth's mentors in the demon hunting world.

Things have definitely stepped up in this one because if fighting these otherworldly bad guys wasn't challenging before this time around it seems that the bad guy knows they're coming and he seems to be more powerful than the disciples that Seth and Evan have encountered so far and he seems to have a whole lot more help.

I love a good mystery/adventure type story I have to admit I don't usually go for stories that delve into the supernatural quite as much as this series seems to but as with all things 'never say never' because I am all in on this one. These stories work for me, while the details are enough to give me a solid sense of the paranormal it's done without any real horror, which totally works for me.

I've also enjoyed seeing Seth and Evan's relationship grow to the point where both men are starting to feel like they could have a future together as long as they survive fighting Gremory's disciples and the other things that go bump in the night that they seem to encounter along the way.

And not to surprisingly I also lost a little bit of sleep with this one, but it wasn't due to the spooky stuff...nope, it was a case of 'I just need to read one more page...' and we all know how things go when you fall down that rabbit hole...just one more...no really just one more...and then before I knew it, I was out of pages. Well done dear author, well done.

There is one more book in this series and then I guess if I want to visit with Seth and Evan I’ll have to start over. We get to meet and see more of Seth’s mentors, Toby and Milo. We haven’t seen them...and then only briefly since Thanksgiving in book 3. if you love the author's other hunter novels (Badlands, Treasure Trail, Deadly Curiosities, and Night Vigil)...and I do... you will get to see some of the characters that make cameo appearances to help out Seth and Evan. If ghosts, magic, suspense and deadly bad guys are your cuppa tea then you're going to love this entire series. Please be aware that all the Witchbane & Badlands series are same sex romances/adventures.

Wow, another amazing story. Seth and Evan are really growing as witch hunters, and are on the hunt for another killer in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Here they meet up with Seth's mentors Toby and Milo who help destroy the witch. This story was more intense as the witch knew they were coming and some of the townspeople were in on it. The ending was fantastic because who doesn't like explosions! I'm ready for the next book.

"Flame and Ash" is the third volume of "Witchbane" series, that I like a lot, written by Morgan Brice. It's not a secret that since my adventure with Seth and Evan started, I have been interested in the characters of Toby and Milo, who play such a huge role in Seth's life. However, I admit that I didn't expect that I would be able to meet them "in person". I don't know why, but I really thought that they would be just "voices on the phone" for the rest of the series. So you have no idea how happy I was when Toby and Milo appeared physically in "Flame and Ash." Until now, they have been my weakness and I have been extremely interested in them. But now, I'm just madly in love with them. In this volume, the author managed to presented story, feelings, sense of humor and personalities of these two mature hunters, and she also in a truly charming way showed us the dynamics of the relationship between them and between them and Seth. I am sure that after reading "Flame and Ash" every reader will be delighted they get to know Milo and Toby, just like me.

I believe there's no doubt that in "Flame and Ash" the main themes that are one with others, and to some extent even dominate them, are family and love. I think it is understandable if we consider the fact that in this volume we find four different couples, including two married couples, which in fact form two families – one largely biological and the other "found". It's true that Morgan Brice always puts emphasis on these topics, but this time they really are the most important. The very fact that Seth finally has the opportunity to introduce his boyfriend to his "foster parents", Milo and Toby, says a lot about what we can find in this novel. However, this is not all, because the plot of this volume refers to family and love in many other respects. I must admit that I really like the interesting and wonderful way in which in this part the author presents these very important topics, that I love so much in many of her series.

In the novel, I also like the fact that Morgan Brice has somewhat decided to surprise us by reversing certain roles, which we do not expect. I will not reveal what exactly happened, because I don't want to spoil your fun, but I can assure you that despite the seriousness of the situation, this plot twist will really appeal to you. In my case, it was the reason I smiled involuntary, the wider as one of the characters really spoke my mind while commenting the situation. In fact, the mentioned role reversal is important because it changes the dynamics of relations between the characters, especially the main ones, as well as affects the action itself. I also think that it is important for the continuation of the series, as it proves how far ahead of Seth and Evan have already beaten at this moment, but also makes us fully aware of what is still ahead of them.

Another topic that caught my attention in this volume of "Witchbane" is human envy and jealousy. The author showed this problem in a really perfect way that touches us deeply. And that's because of the madness it presents. I admit that I was really surprised when the author raised this topic in her novel, because I didn't expect it at all. So imagine how surprising it must have been for our characters.

I’m so happy to be reading Seth and Evan again! Not only that, but this story is set in Boone, North Carolina where I lived for several years…always love reading something set in a familiar locale. Plus getting back into the whole witch disciples storyline—I look forward to these two guys continuing to take these baddies down. Even better was that this time around, Seth’s mentors Toby and Milo join them to help, plus we get introduced to a new couple, one of whom is the target this time around. I’m hoping we might see more of them at some point in a future story.

Seth and Evan’s relationship seems more solid than ever, and even with that we still get more relationship development in this book (I love that). They’re just as hot as well…maybe even getting hotter together (you’ll see what I mean ;-) ). Even if a bit of a wrench is thrown in at one point…

Though the core legend on which this series is based and the resulting methods of fighting the disciples seem to remain constant, you’ll find some interesting new places, supernatural creatures, and objects to capture your attention (you can be absolutely sure on my next trip to North Carolina I’ll be checking out the Road to Nowhere since it’s an actual place with an intriguing history!). The paranormal aspects of the story, the angst brought up thanks to someone from Seth’s past, and the fight against another disciple had me reading this story through in a single sitting.

Flame and Ash is another excellent addition to this series, and I’ll be here waiting for Seth and Evan’s next adventure. This book was a 4.5-star read for me, and I know fans of the series will definitely enjoy it. This is the third book in the series, and you really do need to read these books in order to get the full effect. There are also mentions of characters from the author’s other series, though you don’t need to have read those to enjoy this one. This story is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

The narration: I really enjoyed the narration. Kale Williams did another solid job, and I found myself fully immersed with Seth and Evan once again. The story flew by, and the voices were consistent with the prior books in the series. 5 stars for the narration!

From that review: The search for the ancestors of the lynching party that killed the evil mage and mission to destroy his disciples before they continue their killing sprees picks up in Flame and Ash, book 3 of Witchbane.  And with each new black disciple Seth and Evan are investigating with the intention to find his next target and kill the disciple, Brice manages to deepen the horror, up the suspense, and just in general, make each book a deadlier and finer novel to read

Thank you for the ARC read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review.  Seth is still on the hunt of the witch-disple that killed his brother with Evan there to help him. The two make their way to Boone, North Carolina to help save another descendant of the men that hung a dark witch. With the helping hands from Milo and Toby, can the save the next targeted man? Or is this one more cunning in his ways? This was such a great read, love the witchbane novels. Highly recommend these books for any m/m, supernatural hunting.

Following the premise of the first book, this time Seth and Evan are in North Caroline, trying to stop the next disciple from completing his ritual.

We met Seth’s mentors and father's figures, Milo and Toby, and I really liked the guys :D And it was funny to see how nervous Evan was about this meeting, with its 'meet-the-parents' feeling.

The relationship between Seth and Evan keeps building step by step, although there is still quite a bit of strain, and the work they are doing doesn't make it easier.

And I enjoyed the world-building a lot, so yes, even when I find so many sex scenes annoying, my enjoyment of the stories is bigger so... I keep listening :P

One thing to take into account is that there is a lot of crossing between series, if you have read them, you'll recognize them; if you haven't, well, you might wonder a bit about who these persons are but isn't really an issue and you can follow the story with no problem.

As always, Kale Williams' narration is wonderful.

Another enjoyable paranormal romp with 'hunter-duo' Seth and Evan as they reach North Carolina to dispatch the next witch-disciple before he sacrifices the next male in the Henshaw family line. Coming along for the fun and games are Seth's 'gay step-parents' - older hunter-pair Milo and Toby who provide back-up man-power as well as strategic planning and magic-craft.

I appreciate the changing locales to this series as Seth and Evan traverse the length and breadth of the land to hunt down these twelve witch disciples. However, I wonder if the author might have been over-ambitious with having to come up with no less than twelve separate/distinct plots whilst avoiding repetition and preventing readers from experiencing deja-vu. So far so good - a solid 3 stars.

I love this series and these guys, so from very happy to read the next in the series. An added bonus was Seth’s mentors and stand in dads Milo and Toby playing a big part in the story. After several cameos from them in previous books, it was great to get to know them ‘on screen.’ I loved their banter, and it’s obvious that they’re very much in love. I liked the way they accepted Evan as part of their family.

One of my favourite things about this author is the crossovers with other series. The phone calls with Simon from the Badlands series made me very happy, as did the references to other characters who have their own series within this world. I also like the sense of family, with everyone looking out for each other, and working together to lend a hand if needed within someone else’s story.

I like that Seth and Evan both have IT jobs that they can do as well as being hunters so they have money coming in. It gives the storyline more of an edge of realism, as they still have to deal with the usual day to day issues that most people do in that regard.

Another touch of realism is Evan and Seth still hoping, yet wondering, if their relationship will work out. They haven’t been together long, despite having been through a lot together, and I thought those doubts made a lot of sense. I also like that these guys always do their research, rather than rush in blindly to do battle. The author has put a lot of thought into the worldbuilding and how all the puzzle pieces of the plot fit together, and it shows. I always appreciate that these guys don’t recover instantly from a fight either. Injuries take time to heal as does the head space and emotional trauma that goes with it.

I love the magic system, and how Evan especially is growing in confidence as a hunter, and being able to work rote magic. Having the ghosts help out is a really cool idea!

I liked the supporting cast in this story. Although they were out of their depth, they rallied around to do what they could in order to keep their own safe. I hope we haven’t seen the last of Scott, Steve, and Kyle.

The final showdown is edge-of-seat turning page reading. I found it a very satisfying read, and wonderfully action packed. I liked that it was a group effort, with everyone playing their part.

I’m already looking forward to the next book in the series, especially as they’ll be heading to Charleston where Cassidy, Teag, and Sorren from Deadly Curosities are.

I’d recommend this book to readers who enjoy urban fantasy/paranormal stories with likeable well-developed characters, great banter, fabulous world building, and a plot that keeps you turning pages.

Flame and Ash is the most recent addition to the Witchbane series and I think the best one thus far. Mostly that is because so much of the universe has been created by this point that the individual storytelling is freed up. You really are best served if you have read the previous two books and the novella to fully appreciate this book.

Seth and Evan are headed to NC in this book to deal with yet another witch-disciple before he can take another sacrifice. They are meeting Toby and Milo which makes Evan nervous as this is kind of a “meet the parents” thing for him as these two men are so important to Seth. They’ve managed to take out one witch (when Seth saved Evan) and another in Pittsburgh. They don’t know if the disciples communicate with each other so aren’t sure if this witch may be prepared for them. They figure they may have the element of surprise as they are ahead of the 12 year cycle so this witch may not have made his move for his sacrifice yet. However this witch is prepared and ready to go on the offensive. Complicating their hunting and this mission is the fact that both Seth and Evan are intended sacrifices so the witches that they hint would be only to happy to take them as well even if they aren’t the particular bloodline that they have been sacrificing for 100 years.

The action here is exciting and tense. I think I might have held my breath for many pages as I was reading! But the hunting and action is also balanced by the building bond between Seth and Evan and how they are navigating this relationship that developed so quickly and intensely. There is a lot that happens in this book to strain that relationship and both think at one point or another that it may be too much for the other to deal with. I really liked that the emotional side of the book was given as much attention as the suspense and action parts.

Having read other of Brice’s (and her Gail Martin pen name) series it was fun to see the cameo appearances by MCs from those books. I really like the way the author intertwines her worlds.

I’m definitely looking forward to more of this world, and the rest of the worlds in this universe!

A fantastic urban fantasy that will engage your mind and heart.  I loved the  journey through spells, hexes, witches, ghosts and so much more in this fascinating read.  This was a one sitting read for me because i could not put it down.  I loved getting to know about Seth's adopted family, Milo and Toby, they are terrific characters .  The story-line was compelling and i was surprised a few times.  I loved the writing and the characters just get better and better.

Seth and Evan are in love and work so well as partners.  Their survival and love will be tested in this incredible story.  I love how they find their way to a HFN ending as their quest continues.

This is book four in the A Witchbane Novel series and it is best read in order.  There is a lot of world-building and character development that the reader would miss if you just read this book.  I feel it is not a stand-alone book.

I was gifted this book from the LesCourt Author Services and i freely give my honest opinion and review.

*Received A Copy To Review From The Author*

I have to say, this wasn't my favorite entry in the series. There's nothing really wrong with it. I don't know if maybe my mood was just off but it kind of felt like I was reading the same story...again. Seth and Evan find an evil sorceror (I already forgot which term is used in the book, just go with it), they investigate for a few days, then there's the big fight, evil guy dies, Seth and Evan ride off to find the next witch-disciple (there's the term). Rinse and repeat. Of course there are some differences, but the overall feel is the same. I did like seeing the more personal family side out side of the hunt. I liked Toby and Milo, and seeing Evan be nervous to meet the "parents". I also liked that Seth and Evan are contemplating life after their mission is over and what that will mean for them. I'm still invested in their happy ever after.

Seth and Evan are still fighting to keep all the other descendants alive. This was an enjoyable book and I really liked reading about Toby and Milo more, instead of being on the other end of the phone, they are there in person and kicking ass. Fighting spirits and witch-disciples, Seth and Evan are also trying to build their relationship into something more stable and lasting.
What I love about this series is how the author pulls the men & women from the other series into this one, I like the overlapping books even though they are two different series.
The author's storytelling in each book changes but it all wraps around the main storyline of the dark warlock and his witch disciples. It's a great Urban Fantasy/Paranormal series.

Another enjoyable read in the series this time the boys team up with Toby and Milo, the hunters who trained Seth and are like family to him.
This relationship added another dynamic to the interactions with Evan and Seth able to envisage a 'forever' life together.
I like the way these books are interconnected (Simon played a part in this one). I do wonder if the author intends to write a book for each disciple of if she intends for a final showdown with the disciples coming together as a group. As much as I enjoy the series I don't know if it can support another 9 books on disciple hunts.

Flame and Ash is the next book in the Witchbane series by Morgan Brice. If you remember correctly, this was the series I struggled with, but wow! This one kicks up the action and the heat. Seth and Evan need to watch their backs, but they have another team to help them.

The book started a bit slow, but when it picked up, it was full-throttle. The characters are becoming more developed and more interesting, and the plot is getting more intriguing. So many twists and turns to keep you read. I'm really starting to fall in love with this series! One click today! 4.5 stars.

Seth and Evan are set to hunt down some witch disciples together with Toby and milo and a few other friends. They are hunting down the ones who killed Jesse, Seth's brother.
This storyline is good, and the characters well developed. There is suspense and magic going on, and to be honest, I liked this story. It also works well as a standalone for those who have not read the previous books.

This review and much more can be round at Love Bytes Reviews

Note: This is the fourth book in this series and it builds on the events of the previous books. There are major spoilers for all of those books and it is recommended to read this series in order.

Evan and Seth are leaving Pittsburgh after ridding the world of yet another of the witch-disciples there. They head to North Carolina to meet up with Toby and Milo, fellow hunters who have acted as surrogate parents for Seth, training him in the finer arts of hunting 🙂 They have been together for years and are very good at their jobs and are connected to other hunters and resources. Even though it’s early in the cycle, they are on a mission to save the next sacrifice – a young man named Kyle Henshaw.

Working with Toby and Milo, the begin their research and recon. They meet surreptitiously Kyle and his boyfriend so they have an idea of how to keep him safe. Turns out his boyfriend Steve is the son of an old acquaintance of Milo and Toby’s who has some idea of what they might be up against. There are some suspicious townspeople though and Evan feels like they are being watched. And of course they are. But when the boys go missing, everyone is worried that the cycle has been moved up and the witch-disciple has already grabbed them right out from under their noses.

Scott, Toby and Milo’s old friend is a huge help in getting everyone to safety where they can work on a plan to neutralize the threat. But then things go horrible wrong and Even is left to come up with a plan with the rest of the team to save Seth and to rid the world of one more witch-disciple. Thankfully the team is able to work together to save the day, although there are some casualties 😉

I think this might be my favorite so far of these books. The creepy factor is off the charts at some points. I loved the historic setting and the teamwork with Toby and Milo. The pacing of this book was the best yet. I could have done with so much of the recounting of previous installments, but maybe other people like that. Evan really comes into his own in this book, which I really appreciated as I felt the power dynamic in their relationship wasn’t great in the previous books. Seth respects the heck out of Evan, but Evan really needed this win to bolster his confidence. Toby and Milo are great characters and I loved hearing their perspectives on their love story 😉 There were some nice twists and turns in this one that kept me listening to see how things were going to turn out. Kale Williams does a fabulous job voicing these characters. He is such a talented narrator and I always look forward to listening to the books he narrates. There are a lot of characters and a few regional accents in this one and I though he nailed them. Definitely recommend as a strong addition to this series. I’m looking forward to Book 5!

Audio: Five Stars
Narrator: Mr. Kale Williams
I jumped on this audio because it contained two of my favorite things, an amazing paranormal from Morgan Brice and narration from Mr. Williams. What a dynamic combination! I loved Kale’s melodic tone, and he did a masterful job in bringing this thrilling, roller coaster of novel to life! The variety of different voices was impressive. Seth and Evan have such chemistry, and this creative audio highlighted their solid relationship. The portrayal of the evil disciple had a wicked and creepy edge which captivated me. I found this production did such an amazing job bringing the complex world of good and evil to life. I highly recommend this audiobook that you might want to listen to with the lights on.
Story-line: This is a heart-pounding paranormal tale, that would be helpful if you visited the Witchbane series in order, however it can still work as a stand-alone. Seth Tanner is on a dangerous mission. Years ago, his brother Jesse was mistaken for him and murdered during a ritual sacrifice from supernatural beings. Since that horrific day, Seth is hellbent on avenging his sibling’s death and preventing further killings by destroying the evil forces. Along with Evan Malone, his significant other, they are heading south for another fight to stop the witch disciples from gathering power from their dark force, the long-dead warlock Gremory. This dark warlock cursed the 12 men that made up the sheriff’s posse that killed him. Every year, one of the witch disciples goes after a descendant from the posse to murder him and feed off that power to give them immortality. This 12-year cycle has caused multiple deaths of innocent men. Evan was supposed to be killed but was saved by Seth. Now they are romantically linked and Evan is helping Seth go after the remaining witches to destroy them.
This story has them teaming up with seasoned monster hunters Milo and Toby. I enjoyed the dynamics between the cranky and fearless older men. It is a hard life and it has aged them quickly. Seth and Evan are developing familial ties with an eclectic group of men that challenge the creatures from our nightmares. Ms. Morgan’s series is innovative and I was quickly absorbed in the story from the first chapter. Even though the central theme is the same, stopping the eternal serial killers, each novel remains fresh. I loved how much Evan has changed from a timid and scared young man into someone willing to give up his life to help his boyfriend Seth in their grisly quest.

I enjoyed this story, was held in suspense, particularly for the last third of the book. I liked all the mentions of characters in other series & kinda sorta hoped that more would show up too. I also see potential for other side characters, but who knows if there's any intention there. It was funny at times too, even with the murder, mayhem & general drama. The audio narration was great - I've become a huge fan of Kale's in the past couple years.
One issue I had - and it's one I almost always have with Brice/Gail Z. Martin's works - continuity errors. She could really use an editor to double check that one aspect. Numbers of months that passed between events changed each time they're mentioned, things were referred to as having never happened before, (or something of the like), when they had, and occasional repetition when not needed - not a subtle reminder to the reader about something that happened in a previous book, but something repeated within a matter of minutes/pages or chapters, as if it had never been said/thought by the character before. It makes me a bit twitchy sometimes, BUT, that having been said, I have still really enjoyed the overall stories, characters, and story arcs in Brice's/Martin's books. (I do wish that the couples could be a little less insecure in their inner monologues - he loves me/he loves me not, but that's romance for you, not just these books.) I will be continuing to read books within this world.

I have to say that if I want to read paranormal mystery there are 2 authors I know at the top of my head that will provide a good read and one of them is Morgan Brice.

The thing is that the reads, as good as they are, they never have that zing for me that will propel them to amazing and unforgettable. And the same was here as well. Seth and Evan going after another witch disciple. They do their thing and around 70-75% they fight the bad guy. The only thing different here is that Milo and Toby are present as well.

Nothing wrong with all that but when Seth and Evan mention their training with other hunters, their sparring sessions, I want a bit of that! I want to see some side action when it comes to their lives and not the same ol' "my brother died and I must avenge him" or "my parents through me out and I have no home" or "I hope he loves me as much as I love him and we can live our lives". Those have been going on for the past 2 books and now in this one as well and as much as it is the motivation of the characters in the beginning, they really need to move on from that being mentioned round and round and round, again and again for pages on end.

At least there was some relationship development here, however glossed over and I think that Seth and Evan are more solid in it now so maybe we will be spared those musings in the upcoming books.

An ARC of 'Flame and Ash' was graciously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Seth & Evan back again (an audio review)

I’m enjoying the Witchbane series. I remember the first book was a little shaky for me, but I’ve since settled into the stories quite nicely. Seth lost his brother violently to a supernatural force and once he determined the pattern of victims, he made it his mission to prevent further killings, thereby weakening the otherworldly creatures. He saved Evan’s life and, having lost everything, Evan decided to join Seth on his quest. But he’s a graphic artist who knows nothing about the occult. So it’s been a steep learning curve for him – and me.

We meet an older pair of ghost hunters on this journey through the Blue Ridge Mountains – proof this can be a life-long occupation. Or obsession. Just depends on your perspective.

This time it’s Seth who is truly endangered and Evan who must lead the rescue. He never hesitates. The bond between the men is unbreakable and I felt that emotional pull. The story hit home with how we have family who reject us for who we are (Evan) and those we embrace as found family (Seth).

I’ll end by saying Kale Williams is doing a great job with this series and I was pleased Simon Kincaide from the Badlands series made an appearance. Plenty more ghosts to hunt, plenty more stories to come.

When their lives are on the line, will love be enough?

This time around we find the boys in the Blue Ridge Mountains facing their greatest challenge to-date and being hunted by the very being they are hunting. It was great to go on this adventure with the boys and see how they were holding up both romantically and individually. Doubts still resurface from time to time, but their connection was still holding strong and their chemistry? Well, that’s something I’ll let you find out for yourself.

Morgan Brice continues to build her world with even more interesting elements all the while keeping the reader engaged and invested, not only in the overall conflict but also in the romance.

Toby and Milo join Seth and Evan in this adventure. I enjoyed their presence more this time around because I could experience first-hand the connection they have forged with the boys.

Action-packed, fast-paced and engaging, this series has been a surprising treat for me to read.

Overall this was an enjoyable read about monster hunters protecting humanity from the supernatural. Reading about the developing relationship between Seth and Evan is enjoyable and the addition of Milo and Toby adds a family feel to the character interactions.

This particular book highlighted the fact that the characters in this series are almost all men who are in relationships with other men. This is a perk if you are looking for that type of story, but it does add another implausible aspect to the series. Considering that approximately half the human population is women, an explanation might be in order.

One thing that improved in this is volume of the series is the visual descriptions of scenery and action sequences. The setting was much easier to imagine and the descriptions felt a bit more vivid.

Once again, Kale Williams adds an extra bit of flavor to this series with has soothing voice and masterful performance.

In this installment of the Witchbane series Seth and Evan’s hunt takes them to the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Seth’s adopted father figures Toby and Milo join the hunt. The book gives details about Toby and Milo’s past and how they got together. It was great getting to see their care and concern for Seth and the way took Evan under their wings as well. As with the rest of the series, there is a great mix of paranormal action and sexy times. One of my favorite things about Morgan Brice’s writing is the detail she gives the settings for her stories. Flame and Ash takes place in an area I spent time in when I was younger, and she included places I loved to go. It was especially fun to read about Milo and Evan’s visit to Mystery Mountain, which I believe is based on Mystery Hill, a crazy attraction I loved in my youth (and have visited as an adult!) I highly recommend this series.
