I was very satisfied with the contents of the book and I liked that it makntains a very balanced attitude towards everything related to caring for and bringing up a newborn up to the age of three. It is an objective view on parenting and gives the reader the chance to make their own decisions on how they want to raise their children, while being aware of the implications. I guess what I liked most was the fact that the book shares hands-on advice on how to deal with crucial aspects of being a first time parent: from what things you will need in a nursery before the baby comes, to how to change their nappies, how to breastfeed, how to bathe the baby, care for their bellybutton etc etc. everything is covered in this book. I give it 5 stars just because it is so comprehensive.
Another plus: the language, very accesible vocabulary and everything is explained clearly. I also likes the photos, which come as a good addition to the written text. Maybe it would have been a good idea to offer explanations of the illnesses pictured in chapter 12 (baby's health) as it was a bit difficult to match the photo to a particular disease/condition.
What I didn't like: the magazine format makes it somehow difficult to follow the text, especially when you have to navigate between different pages to get a grasp of the entire content (ie: text on page 1 continues on page 5, there is a casette on page 2 related to what's on page 1 and 5).
Pluses: - Comprehensive content covering all aspects of childcare from 0 to 3 - Clear language that avoids the overly twee and infantilising - Cute baby pictures - Takes a firm stance on vaccination
Minuses: - Poor proofreading (I noticed numerous typos) - I found the magazine-style format disruptive and confusing - In several places the book contradicted itself - Hierarchy of headings was not always clear - Doesn't always give reasoning for advice/rules, making it harder to evaluate it or weight it against conflicting advice
Some advice that the book offers is not correct, especially regarding First Aid and some other practical advice but it is in general a quite good book.
