Great Battles of World War II

Rate this book
The Second World War was the final global conflict of the twentieth century. It involved more combatants, and a wider range of battlefield terrain than any other conflict in history, from the frozen plains of Russia to the baking Libyan desert, and from the atolls of the Pacific to the skies over Britain. In Great Battles of World War Two, Michael Dudley has taken a fresh look at the crucial battles which decided the outcome of the Second World War, beginning with the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940, a feat that boosted the morale of a nation during its darkest hour, and reaching a climactic end with the final bloody reckoning between the Red Army and the Third Reich amongst the ruins of Berlin.

All things considered,I can say it's an OK book. Recommended for anyone who has not much knowledge of the history of World War II initially and wanted to read a concise and fast reading of the subject. But for WWII nerds, probably all information available in the book is already well known. There are several errors in spelling which can be misleading. For example,P-40 Warhawk is referred to as P-400! Also, F4F Wildcat is an aircraft operated mostly by US Navy and US Marines but not by USAAF. Seems minor, but pretty important if accuracy of facts must be considered.

If you enjoy very specific details of WW2 this book is for you. As someone who finds individual battles and wars fasinating, this book does an amazing job at covering a very large range of battles in all areas of WW2. Including much less covered areas such as Africa.

My biggest criticism of the book is it spits out a LOT of Names and Facts/Locations that are very hard to keep up with / put any importance to. Still very entertaining but might have benefited with more maps to show a slight visual to go along with the pages of locations and people that were named.

Overall: worth reading if WW2 and specifically battle tactics is up your alley. If not, I would find something else.

Good read for people with minimal education or not a great insight to Second World War history. On the other hand, it left out major details and skipped a lot of important info surrounding the battles that were listed. 3.5 stars

Mediocre at best. Dull writing and full of typos. Do not recommend.

Book is ok, it is a good, general overview of the entirety of the war. It outlines what’s important, and the generality of what happened. My complaints would include the book going to slow or fast through subjects, sometimes lingering on something that’s been explained already, or quickly skimming over something that has zero other context. I have very bad memory and tend to forget things often, I’m getting tested for amnesia, so a quick and concise book like this is good for any reader.

A good chronicle of the battles of World War II. I didn't study that much of the world war in school, so this was a good background read to get up to speed.
