Head to Birch Harbor, Michigan and visit the Hannigan sisters, who live and love on the quaint shores of Lake Huron. Birch Harbor is a romantic women's fiction series and a family saga by the author of The Farmhouse.Book House on the Harbor
Elizabeth Bromke writes women's fiction and heartwarming romance. In her stories, she weaves together family dynamics and the triumphs and trials of modern relationships. Echoes of the past flavor her books with nostalgia.
Elizabeth lives in the mountains of Arizona. There, she enjoys walking, reading, and cooking with her husband, son, and their sweet Golden-mix, Winnie.
After many years of drifting apart, Nora Hannigan's daughters have been brought back together in their little hometown of Birch Harbor. The occasion: Nora's death.
Kate: the oldest; recently widowed; her two boys are in college; she has no true income. Amelia: the struggling New York actress/waitress; never married, no children, but always in a noncommittal relationship - usually with younger men. Megan: the brooding sister whose marriage is on the rocks; one teenage daughter; considering following her dream (matchmaking). Clara: the youngest - by a long shot; teacher; former caretaker of sick mother; the only one currently living in Birch Harbor.
When the sisters meet with their mother's lawyer to read her will, they learn something that shocks them all. They'll need to unravel the reasoning behind the shocking revelation, determine who should really get what, maintain their sisterly relationships, AND cope with their own personal struggles.

This is NOT a romance novel, but there are mildly romantic subplots happening for each of the women. Kate's personal life realizes the most progress. It's written in a way that had me cheering for all of the characters. There's no real "bad guy" except for the situation: the family secret was not handled in the most ideal way. There's lots of tension and family drama. The secret isn't revealed to the reader until nearly the very end.
The ending provides closure/resolution to the current dilemmas, but introduces new information and questions that left me eager to read the sequel. Some novels lose steam after reaching the climax, but this story continues to be engaging and exciting until the very end!
OVERALL Mild language, including taking the Lord's name in vain. Implied immorality (extramarital sex). Themes: family, love, fairness, honesty.
*** I received a complimentary copy of the manuscript from the publisher through Booksprout. Opinions expressed are my own. ***
A heartwarming story that will melt your heart. A very hard book to put down. Very well written and interesting characters. First time reading this author but won’t be my last.
This is a well written book with a cast of strong, well developed characters and an interesting story line. The author brings four sisters to Birch Harbor together for the reading of their mother's will which reveals a family secret that shocks them all. Along with the subplots the author weaves an entertaining story with drama and tension and keeps you reading to the end to find the answer to the secret. I enjoyed reading their story.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
I really enjoyed this first story in a new series. We get a great introduction to the sisters and their family dynamic. Even though its pretty easy to guess what the secret is I found it interesting seeing how it all unravelled. The story drew me in from the beginning and had me curious about the story to keep turning page after page. I'm looking forward to reading more in this series.
Nora Hannigan, matriarch of the Hannigan family, has died, and her four daughters, Kate, Amelia, Megan, and Clara are there to take care of the funeral arrangements and the reading of the will. It's just a formality as Nora had everything taken care of awhile ago. Well, that's what the Hannigan girls believed, until they find out at the reading of the will, that Nora made some changes to her will before she died, and one of the girls is left out of the will. (cue the dramatic music)
This is a story of four sisters who I imagine used to be very close, but life took over and they've kind of drifted apart. Now they're all back together because of their mother's death. Through chapters from each sister's perspective we learn what their lives have been like up until now, and a little of what they hope for the future. We see how they deal with the changes in their lives after the death of their mother, and the huge surprise she left them in her will.
I like the alternating perspectives in the chapter so we get to know each of the sisters, and more about their mother. I don't want to give anything away, but they end up having a bigger issue to deal with than who's going to get which property. I liked the way the situation was handled and that the sisters were closer at the end of the book. Each of them had come to decisions about their lives, some more painful than others.
I don't consider this a romance, but more of women's fiction. I look forward to reading more books about Birch Harbor. There is some mild cursing in the book. I received a complimentary copy from Booksprout. All thoughts expressed in this review are my own.
This a family saga about 4 sisters who are brought back together at their family home after their mother dies. The eldest has the task of administering their mothers estate which holds secrets. I usually enjoy a family saga and this sounded good but sadly I didn't really enjoy it. It just seemed to take forever to get going and it was too predictable. I don't think this author is for me.

After the death of their mother, the four Hannigan sisters, Kate, Amelia, Megan, and Clara, are gathered for the reading of her will. It seems the youngest sister, Clara, wasn’t mentioned in the will at all, which shocks everyone. There are also questions about some of the items the other sisters inherited. As they attempt to find out why Clara wasn’t included in the will and how they can come up with a solution to give her a fair share of their mother’s estate, they start searching through their mother’s property and personal belongings, looking for clues that might shed light on this predicament. Their father is also still missing. They find more questions than answers.
A story of family secrets, new beginnings, growing together as a family, new friendships, and new love interests. Not all questions are answered so you would need to read the next book in the series to hopefully get those answers.
A mother passes and 4 sisters come together to deal with the loss along with the reading of the will... straight forward right?! Wrong!! This books sucks you in and keeps you there till the last page, the way things unfold and you connect with the characters who are all very different, have great depth, things you like or not so like about them and a big secret hanging over them all that will change their lives going forward. This is a book I would read over and over as I loved it so much and now I can not wait to see how things unfold for Kate, Amelia, Megan and of course the baby of the family Clara.

As I started reading this new series - A Birch Harbor Series, I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book but the story drew me in and I'm looking forward to the other books in the series. This is the story of four sisters dealing with their mother's death and some unexpected things happening with the reading of her will. Kate, Amelia, Megan and their much younger sister Clara are all dealing with things in their lives. The details of the will gives them an opportunity to change the direction they are all going and also brings them together to form a deeper bond as sisters. This first book didn't have much romance in it but left some hints of what will be coming in the other books. I liked the feel of this Michigan town with its lake houses and coming mystery about a lighthouse that may belong to the sisters.

House on the Harbor by Elizabeth Bromke This is my first book from this author, the story has a very strong plot and excellent strong characters that worked very well together, every chapter was written from each one of the four sisters, given you their the perspectives.
Exceptional, well-written, and intriguing that just draws the reader in from start to finish. the emotional pull to the story is quite extraordinary. I found it was easy to read and felt very true to life. It's full of intrigue, it's gripping and emotional, a great story that kept me entertained and engaged from beginning to end. I will definitely continue to read other books from this author. This is certainly a book I would have no hesitation in recommending. I highly recommend 5*

Nora Hannigan's death brings her four daughters back home to Birch Harbor. But when the lawyer reads the Will, there had been a change made and they hear something totally unexpected that will put their own issues on the back burner while they try to deal with their new reality! A family secret not dealt with now focuses their attention amid lots of drama along the way. It will definitely hold the reader’s interest as we wait to find out more details.
This was a good and interesting read with a touch of mystery keeping the reader centered. It certainly gave the sisters a time for introspection and examination of their own life decisions. Will they come out better for the experience? Grab your copy and find out what is revealed.
In House on the Harbor the reader is introduced to four sisters who have gathered in their hometown of Birch Harbor for the reading of their late mother's will. For some reason the estate was not divided equally as expected, one sister being completely ignored. Three sisters moved away from their home town leading independent lives, whilst the youngest sister stayed, living a quiet life and caring for her mother. Yet it's the youngest sister who's left out of the will.
Whilst trying to unravel the secret of the will, the fours sisters are having to come to terms with their present lives and decide what the future might hold.
House on the Harbor is first in the series about the Hannigan sisters of Birch Harbor, each book is complete without a cliffhanger.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Booksprout, this review is my honest opinion and completely unbiased
What a heartwarming story of four sisters trying to navigate their mother's death and the secrets left behind. Kate, Amelia, Megan and Clara have had a strange upbringing. Clara is the youngest by far and was the only one to stay with their mother during her decline. Kate is a recent widdow and has some decisions to make about her own life. Megan is in the middle of a divorce, her future undecided. And Amelia is a struggling actress in a city that could eat her alive. All four of them have each other but not really. They have gone their seperate ways and are together for the reading of the will. Once its read, they have to deal with the aftermath together. This story was heartbreaking for me at points. I can see the love they have for each other but how sibling rivalry comes out. I can also see how strong they are when they stand beside each other. I look forward to seeing out each life proceeds from this book. They all deserve their own HEA.
I absolutely loved this book. Four sisters have returned home to bury their mother and deal with her estate. It is the first book I have read by Elizabeth Bromke and she really reined me in. She gives the readers a fairly good insight into all the sisters, even though the main story for some will appear in the next books. She did an incredible job of drawing out the mystery. At first you just know that SOMETHING is going on, but she gives you absolutely no hint as to what that something is. You are given tiny bit by tiny bit and it keeps you wanting to stay with the book and just keep turning those pages! Now I can't wait for the next book! I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.
I enjoyed this book, House on the Harbor by Elizabeth Bromke. It was hard to put down after I started reading it. The shock at the reading of Nora's will when the four daughters are at the lawyer's office is nothing compared to the family secret that is revealed later. The suspense of what the secret is takes most of the book to be revealed, but that is what keeps you reading. The book ends well and makes me look forward to the next book about this family, because it is clear that there is more to come. I highly recommend this book.

A quick read-finished it in one afternoon. A family of four girls are dealing with the aftermath of their mother’s death and each gets a few surprises!
Though this was an excellently written story, it simply didn't grab me as I believe it was meant to do. I took forever to get the four women straight in my head, and even at the end, only two are clear to me. The circumstances in which they find themselves are certainly believable, but it left me with no situations in which one or more would have behaved differently from the others, and they all clump together.
It wasn't hard to anticipate the big reveal. And I found the legal arguments to be weak, at best. "We can't contest because..." is BS. Any will can be contested, and I fail to see how the lack of paperwork can affect a daughter's legal rights. The women eventually seem to come to some agreement which, in my mind, is the correct move from the start.
It's obvious there's more to this story; the backstory may be long and involved and lead to more clarity. I just couldn't get interested enough to look forward to #2.
Elizabeth's writing style is comparable to that of Olivia Miles. Every story I've read by Elizabeth has a warm, inviting feel that allows me to sink into the story and fall in love with her characters. House on the Harbor is one of those books that will draw you in and while it slowly unravels, it leaves you with no choice but to turn the page and read the next chapter to find out what happens. This author is now my go-to author for women's fiction.
House on the Harbor by Elizabeth Bromke is the first book in the Birch Harbor series. Four sisters, dealing with the death of their mother, discover a family secret that will shock them. Kate Hannigan is in charge of her late mother’s estate. She plans to divide everything equally with her sisters. However, she doesn’t realize that her mother changed her will just before her death. During the reading of the will, she discovers one sister has been left off the will. The reason why means a family secret is forced to be revealed. Meanwhile, her sisters are dealing with their issues. Amelia is a struggling off-Broadway actress who seems to go from man to man. Megan is dealing with her pending divorce and the possibility of dating again. And Clara, the baby of the family, is about to question everything she knows to be true. I was intrigued by the book synopsis and looked forward to reading a story about four sisters. The story was good. The will excludes one sister, why? But as the story progresses, the secret is about to be revealed and then something stops it. Time after time after time. The secret is…oh what there’s a knock on the door or the phone rings, you get the picture. Once the secret is finally revealed, it is a total let down. And why their mother left this one sister out of the will is absolutely ridiculous. Meant to be a story with lots of twists and turn, eventually I just said enough already! By the end, I didn’t care for the characters, their lives or their relationships. Overall, I do not recommend House on the Harbor and I will not be continuing the series.
House on the Harbor is available in paperback, eBook and audiobook
The House on the Harbor is the opening book written by Elizabeth Bromke in her Birch Harbor series. This series centers around four sisters Kate, Amelia, Megan, and Clara. There are so many secrets revealed throughout this story and the suspense will definitely keep the reader wanting more. This story deals with family drama but how they deal with it is simply amazing. Each of the sisters have their own personality that adds to this story. The characters are not only likeable but also enjoyable.
As the four sisters deal with the passing of their mother and her strange ways they are all surprised at what they discover as her last will and testament is revealed. As the girls set off on a discovery as to why their mother purposely omitted the youngest sister, Clara, from the will they are shocked at what they find. This family has many skeletons in the family closet. Then there is also the mystery as to what has really happened to their missing father. The sisters are truly amazing as they support each other on their journey but whether it stays this way is another story.
I was not given a complimentary copy of this book to read and review. I was not approached to post a favorable response. I have rated this story with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story filled with love, forgiveness, and family.
Congratulations to Elizabeth Bromke on an amazing start to her series. I will be reading the next book to see what happens next.
I read this book for my library book club. It was all right, but it was really annoying at times (because nothing is ever said outright--things are only hinted at, thus dragging the story out) and somewhat confusing most of the time. The book is about four sisters who must deal with their mother's estate upon the matriarch's death. They meet with the handsome local lawyer in the small Michigan town where their mother lived with the youngest daughter, Clara. Upon the reading of the will, it seems that Clara, who had taken care of their dying mother until the end, is left out of the will completely, inheriting none of the properties or items her mother had owned. The story is choppy and disjointed, told through each sister's viewpoints, all of whom end up sounding like the same person. Some misplaced paperwork from the lawyer's secretary at the end of the story clears up the mystery of Clara's exclusion from the will.
The characters were well developed, the dialogue (both verbal and non-verbal) was of such high quality that I felt like I was watching an up-close movie. I loved it. I liked how it was on the up-and-up, meaning the relationships were wholesome and real, with faults just like we see and feel in our lives( but without tons of cheap drama.) I appreciate that.
The pace was great, she gave me images I haven't seen before. I loved the minor characters (the sweet middle schooler was a favorite). They added to the story. The one boyfriend made me laugh because he was so ridiculous without realizing it. I'm still chuckling.
The scenery was beautiful. Details really made me feel alive and reflect on times I've been in similar situations.
The potential for other great stories is rich. I look forward to them!
It was very slow, the "secret" was very predictable. And honestly not that great of a secret anyways. I found it hard to understand their reasonings behind it. And why were they all confused at the will reading if the oldest 3 knew the secret anyway? I couldn't get into the characters either, they seemed snoody and judgmental, unlikable even. And the fact that they are all waiting on their mothers properties to be divided so they can get a profit and finally start their own lives kind of disgusts me. They are all seemingly mid to late 40s, why don't any of them have anything of their own going for them. Clara is the youngest and is the only one that seems to be a hard worker not waiting on an inheritance to get a career. And they refer to her as "immature" I finished it but probably won't read the next one
I listened to this book on Audible and really enjoyed it and the narration. We meet four sisters at the wake of their Mother's funeral, Kate, Amelia, Megan and Clara. Afterwards Kate is told she is the executor of her Mum's will, she thinks ok, let's split thngs four ways and we can all get on with our seperate lives but..... A family secret comes to light that could shake the foundations of all their relationships, can the sisters learn to really stick together no matter what?
I liked the characters and the growth that they made during this first book in a series, I liked the setting - the town sounded so lovely. This was my first book by this author but it won't be my last. Would recommend.
