I have been reading a number of books lately where the premise of the books sound good and they are very much needed in the marketplace, but the author fails to deliver for numerous reasons. This is one of those books.
What started off strong, VERY quickly became a book filled with what felt like fluff and unimportant self promotion of irrelevant experiences. This was only supplemented by frequent tangents the author would go on related to issues having zero to do with the topic of the book.
In all honestly, the only reason I finished this book was that I had signed up to review via Netgalley.

Why I was interested in this book: Having been in leadership positions for over 30 years, I am always looking for ways to effectively communicate, assess and lead. I had not heard of responsive leadership before and thought this might be something new to add to my leadership skills.
My assessment: The 7 Secrets of Responsive Leadership is a great book. I really appreciated how it was laid out, broken down and provided solid, clear and inclusive examples. Jackie Jenkins-Scott knows what she is talking about and has years of experience to support the skills she shares. The topics are clear and presented with bullets, outlines, steps and lessons. And the examples are of real people and organizations. Jenkins-Scott also provides a through-line of her own experiences that are relatable to each topic. She preaches what she practices.
The challenge is that business-books are typically presented quantitatively. Most of these skills (or secrets) are qualitative. And that’s great! We need these types of examples, too! These practical communication skills complement the book/units with examples that are practical lessons/parables that are great for building upon our life resources.
Jenkins-Scott presents leadership in terms of your role within an organization, so the skills are also applicable and relatable to many people at many levels of leadership. What I also really love about this book is that there are many different examples of different types of organizations and people, including many examples featuring underserved or underrepresented people, non-profit and for profit businesses, social services, and people with various races, sexual orientations and ethnicities.
Stories of the human condition: As mentioned above, this book contains ways we can grow and develop new leadership skills that are qualitative and applicable to most situations, both professionally and personally. Jenkins-Scott’s caring nature to provide examples that depict many different types of readers across the country makes it very easy to read and is quite relatable. Finally, the personal examples provided by Jenkins-Scott add an almost memoir feel to the book.
