This was fun. I like the way these authors write and I enjoy the universe, but I have to agree with the general consensus - this is Die Hard in Space, or Space Die Hard, as Cal from Space Team would say

This story is muchly related to the movie Die Hard, but it has its own personality and plot, and what a plot! Nothing seems what it is. The authors take us to a wider spectrum of reality, a mesh of SciFi, thriller and detective procedure, that is so well defined and potent, with a dash of humour that helps remove the sting to an otherwise impressive action packed premise, with a phenomenal villain. A fast paced storyline and an AI so ingenious and creative, I’d like to have one! The characters and background events are laid out in clearly labeled segments that come together into cohesive, rolling action.
The ending was certainly a surprise! I didn't see that coming. Hopefully Resonant Abyss #2 comes out soon, because I’ve got questions and curiosities that need answering, and the sooner the better! I’m delighted with this new series!

Notes:

Good popcorn read.
- Needs another run or three of editing.
- Flint, Rachel & Lars were great.
- Plot line was fairly cheesy and totally makes me want to re-watch Die Hard.
- I felt like all the character names were based on action flicks. =P
- Plot wise, the authors took an abrupt turn and twisted around a few times towards the end. Hopefully, plot progression will be less jumpy in the following books.

Resonant Son. J.N.Chaney

Flint Read is an ex Union cop. Unjustly fired for something he didn't do, coupled with the issue of him assaulted his boss which he richly deserved. He is now a security officer in an extremely large and powerful corporation. The company during the graveyard shift has been taken over by terrorists and the employees are being held as hostages. Their is a valuable commodity hidden in a secure vault and the intruders are executing hostages to get the passcode. Clint is their only obstacle standing in their way. He is being aided by an AI (artificial intelligence). This is an extremely action packed fast read. Enjoyed immensely!

Let me start off by saying that I liked this book. I don’t know how I feel about the fact that Chaney has started yet another series that I want to dive into. It seems like most of my TBR is filled with his books. I don’t know how I will find all the time that I need to read everything he puts out. But I digress.

Even though I liked it, I do have some issues. Let me get the first elephant out of the way. This story was basically a “Die Hard” retelling. I don’t know if it was meant to be an homage or if it was just a rip-off, but nonetheless, it only took a few paragraphs to see it. I was hoping that there would be a note from the authors talking about how the movie (or original book) was their inspiration, but there was not one that I saw.

I have to be honest. It was so glaringly obvious that I almost stopped reading and Lemmed* the book. (For full disclosure I saw the second book in the series and read the synopsis. Because I liked that story I decided to keep giving this book a chance, mostly to get to the next one.)

I know that coming up with original ideas is hard. There is always a chance that you will have ideas that seem a lot like something someone else created This is one reason why some authors won’t read anything in the genera that they are writing while working on a new book. They don’t want to be subconsciously influenced by what they are reading. I also know that this is not the first story to take a page or two from “Die Hard.” But this was a lot more than just some overused tropes.

I guess the thing that bothered me the most is that I have read enough by this author to know that he can come up with some good ideas and doesn’t need to borrow so heavily from other sources. I just hope that the rest of the series is more original.

The only other problem that I had was that I felt that the main character, Flint Reed, was a little two dimensional. I don’t feel like he had any growth at all. It seemed the world changed around him, but he just stayed the same. I would have liked to see him learn something about himself in the end. (I guess you could say that his realization about how bad his relationship with Heather was and not taking her back, which I saw coming a mile off, was some growth, but I don’t know if it was enough.)

If I had to give one more gripe, I would say that this book would have been better written from a third person limited point of view rather than first, but this is purely my opinion.

Now, what did I like about this, and over all I did like the story. Aside from the elements that screamed “Die Hard,” (I mean Flint runs around barefooted the whole main story and he had to run over glass that was shot out!) This was a fun story. It was fun to read and there was a lot of action (though it was because of all the action that I thought this should have been third person). I thought the action was well written. There were even several places that made me laugh out loud. That is always a plus in my book.

The authors call this a space thriller, and there were some points in the story that caused me some genuine anxiety. And this is considering that I knew it was the first book in a series and that Flint made it through. It really had me on the edge of my seat.

I also liked how the setting was much smaller than the other books by Chaney. All his other books tend to span a galaxy while this one stayed in one city and for the most part just one building. It was refreshing to have a story that was much more compact. I think the fact that Flint was effectively trapped in a building added to the tension. Add to that a constantly ticking clock and you really feel like every decision has real consequences.

I also liked that this book was not focused on the Union Military. The look at the lives and actions of people that are not on the Union’s most wanted list gives a better glimpse into the universe that Chaney is creating. There was some good world building and even though the book itself is very limited in the setting, it helped to expand the universe as a whole. It reminds you that even though the Union government itself might have some real issues, most of the regular people who live in the Union are normal people just going about their lives. It was good to see a character that doesn’t have the fate of the world resting on their shoulders, at least for this book.

Aside from the issues I mentioned above, I really did enjoy this book. It is a fun fast paced read with lots of good action. If you enjoy Jack Reacher type thrillers or are a huge fan of “Die Hard” and all its tropes, then I think you will like this book. However, as much as I did like the book, the similarities with “Die Hard” were a big issue. Because of this, I have to take some points off. I give it 3 out of 5.

*Lemmed is a term coined on the Sword and Laser podcast by Veronica Belmont and Tom Merritt. It means to decide to not finish a book. It comes from Stanislaw Lem, author of “Memoirs Found in a BathTub,” a book that Veronica could not get through.

Resonant Son follows the character of Flint Reed. Reed is an ex-cop with a very convoluted back story that we get to learn about during Resonant Son, but at the start of the story (and in the Blurb), you basically learn pretty quickly, that this guy is the love child of Bruce Willis (From Die Hard), and Arnie Schwarzenegger, only unlike Willis, he has been kicked out of the Police, his wife has left him and the rest of his life, well, I just won’t ruin the surprise, but if you were in the boot of a car that was hit by a semi-trailer that then dropped off a cliff into a burning nuclear reactor, You would still be having a better day than Reed is having…..
Resonant Son has taken this poor guy, and then thrown him into the Original Die Hard Movie, only with bad guys that make Hans Gruber look like a Kindergarten Teacher.
This book is just so full-on, fast paced, action packed, thrill-ride, that you will not only won’t be able to put it down, you will be re-reading sections just to make sure that what you just read actually really happened.
You find yourself reading a part of the book and thinking that was so awesome, NO WAY, and literally having to go back, and read it again, and then you stop for a couple of minutes just to absorb not only just how brilliant the scene was, how exhilarating the action wat, how brutal and gritty things were, but just to actually play it all out in your head and let it all sink in.
Once it has, you hop back into your proverbial car, and scream back off into the book again, totally enthralled by this utterly amazing ride that is just sensational, from the moment it begins, right up until the very end, in which there are all these really cool little twists and turns, and you actually find yourself making ‘ooohhh’ or ‘aahhhh’ sounds, as things drop into place.
This is an outstanding action story, but there is some absolutely inspired technology that allows for extraordinary world-building for the story to play out in. The entire backdrop that the story plays through is just stunning and whilst there might be a few questions here and there, you get so caught up in the action and the story, that you just don’t care.
One of the highlights of this book is the character work. No offence to anyone, but with this type of kill em all and let somebody else do the head count type of book, (and by that, I only mean the bad people, I do NOT condone any form of gun violence in any way shape or form, nor does this book), you don’t normally expect a lot of depth from the characters.
But I was pleasantly surprised to find that the main character and the utterly hilarious (and in my opinion), best character of the book, Lars, a Super High-Tech AI, were actually exceptionally brilliant characters. The constant banter between Reed and Lars was funny for the most part, and kept the book moving at a rather amusing pace. However, it also allowed for several interesting flashbacks into Reeds past to fill in backstory of what had happened to Reed, as well as Heather, Reeds now ex-wife, as well as a couple of other characters that I won’t give away for spoilers.
Reed’s character was really well done, his mixture of cocky ‘Bruce Willis’ smart-arse ex-cop, whilst at the same time, the PTSD, rather shattered shell still trying to hold on, was really well done.
Lars was just brilliant as the side-kick and comedic relief. His commentary, as well as his well placed comments, MADE this book at several points.
Overall, this is just an outstanding book, on a multitude of levels, and will appeal to a huge range of readers, from Action to Sci-Fi, others just looking for a good read, others still looking for the start of a good series. This is going to be the start of a brilliant series, get onboard now.

Unoriginal

It was a pretty good book if you overlook the fact that it was a blatant ripoff of Die Hard. I expected John MaClain to pop up. Had the bare feet walking through glass, a weapon attached to his back behind his head, except in this case it was a sword instead of a gun. But hey, if you can’t think up your own ideas, use someone else’s. It was still a pretty good story. Say Die Hard with a sci-fi twist. Worth reading.

If you really like Die Hard, this is your book

Lots of action. But it borrows a LOT from Die Hard. A LOT. Now, I like Die Hard, so it didn’t bother me that much. But be warned.

Really good read.

Aside from being way too close to a particular movie in several places, the book otherwise was fantastic, and more than, made up for it, and was totally worth the read, making me look forward to the second in the series.

I was unfair in my initial score. It's not a bad book but I am becoming weary of these shoot-em-up sci fi books - my problem, not the author's.

Great story but silly ending. Okay, I enjoyed this Bruce Willis Die Hard far in the future with the help of a stuffy AI and the author is beginning to be one of my favorites but then he let the detective get out of the job into ...hmmm no I can't tell as it will ruin the story so you will have to read it if this is your kind of SciFi. I still think it is good and worth a couple of hours on your Kindle.

3.5 stars. I found it entertaining, and plan to read the next book in the series. This author seems to borrow heavily from the work of others though. This book is clearly a sci-fi version of the movie Die Hard, with both characters and many scenes lifted with few changes. I also read a couple of books from his Ruins of the Earth series, and that has characters that feel like clones of those from the Expeditionary Force series by Craig Alanson.

This was free with A+ , and I like the narrator, but the story.....blatant rip off of Die Hard. That wasn't the bad part. I hated the ridiculous flash back scenes with Heather. They served no purpose and were just filler. Overall this story was so cheesy. Waste of time. Too bad I already bought book 2 (it was on sale, so....)

Way too much like Did Hard

If you saw the movie "Die Hard" starring Bruce Willis, you pretty much know the plot of this book. Just move it to the future, but still use guns with bullets and gun powder. Oh and an annoying AI.

Bruce Willis for the future

Great sci fi twist to the storyline, added characters make it more than a retelling. Can't to read next chapter.

This was an easy read but so close to the Die Hard storyline that it was a shame and just got annoying. The author could have made it a great story without doing that.

Diehard thought he'd take a 60s spy novel to the far future. Engaging writing, but I nearly put it down several times because of the forehead slapping stereotypes.

Okay action fans, this one will keep your eyes glued to the page as your fingers clutch your book or e-reader in a white-knuckled death grip praying Flint Reed is up to the task before him. Simultaneously, readers will snicker, even openly laugh, at the unintended and, for Reed, frustrating, banter between him and an artificial intelligence called “Lars”.

Flint Reed, framed and fired from the police department, has become a security guard for an intergalactic mining corporation; a business whose CEO, Mr. Oragga, has secrets hidden in his safe that have deep meaning for someone. Who is not exactly clear. Whoever they are, they are willing to make hostages of Orraga’s employees and attempt to breach a supposedly unbreakable security system. What follows is utter chaos. In which Reed becomes a target in more ways than one.

Reed and his ex-wife Heather, are well-developed characters. Reed seems to have an inhuman capacity to absorb punishment, physical, mental and emotional. The relationship he develops with Lars helps him maintain his sanity as well as helping him survive physically. Heather, a much more limited character, proves to be a deep, caring woman with Reed’s best interests in mind.

So, action readers, are you ready to take the fall with Flint Reed? It’s a long way down from floating Sellion City to the clouds covering the surface of the gas giant planet below. Maybe you’re afraid of heights…like Reed. He didn’t have much time to worry about it; maybe you won’t either. Maybe you’ll just be able to enjoy Reed’s anxiety, and one of the better action novels I’ve read, from the safety of your chair…while Reed dangles!

Fast paced, plenty of action.

This book is really well written, fast-paced full of action and the hero you will like. The hero loses his shoes, he tries to find shoes, he loses his weapons, he tries to find additional weapons. He does exactly what I would do if I were in his place he looks for the things he needs to get the job done. I enjoyed this type of hero. Flint is A hero you can get behind and enjoy because his actions are realistic. The only thing I did not like was I think some of the fight scenes went on too long. I don’t know realistically if a body could take the kind of punishment he took. Besides that an excellent read. Going onto the next book in the series give the book a try I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

A SyFy “Die Hard” with Twists

This is a well written SyFy tale that weaves in and out of “Flint Reed’s” life as he deals with a group attempting to rob the company he works for while also the night watchman on duty. Little does he know that what’s about to transpire will catapult him into fame and fortune due to his unselfish acts while working against the robbers and for the employees trapped in a hostage situation. On top of this dilemma he also has serious personal issues that keep popping into his mind thus hindering progress. Out of no where an AI is introduced that becomes his savior and leads him to success. Lots of sub plots and lots of interesting twists and turns kept me interested til the end. I recommend this for anyone who wants an action packed race to a rewarding conclusion.

Enjoyable so far...

Both JNC and CH seem to work well together and have created a great start to this series. The plot (fortunately) only follows the Die Hard movie plot (loosely) for the first half of the book and is different enough to be enjoyable in its own right. The second half is completely different. The characters are fleshed out nicely and are, on the whole, likeable. Highly recommended.

Die Hard in space is good

This is now the third book I read with J.N. Chaney as the author. After reading Last Reaper and Messenger, I will admit that Resonant Son is more entertaining than the previous two.

This was an awesome book.
The plot, while coming out of Die Hard, still was great and the MC and the cast were also great, especially the A.I. Lars.
Managed to read this fast because it was actually interesting from start to finish.

Looking forward to the next book.
