Donny Lentini is a talented young man hungry for his mother’s love. To please her, he becomes guardian angel to his mob-wannabe father. When the father is murdered and found with his hands hacked off, Donny is dealt a set of cards in a game called vengeance. The pot is stacked high with chips; the ante, his soul and the lives of loved-ones. With the help of friends—ex-con, defrocked Jesuit Bill Conlon along with former high-school nemesis, Antwyne Claxton—he digs for whether the murder had anything to do with the mob’s lust for a real estate parcel owned by the family of Donny's lover. He’s new at this game. He doesn’t cheat, but plays his cards well. And he gets what he wants.
A well-written story following a minor mob character while It explores real family conditions; mob fiction fans will enjoy this story while others will relate to the AA component.
It took me a bit to get into this story. Certain things came out that I kind of related to like Donny's mother's dementia and his love life, which brought more emotion into the story other than anger. This story had a lot of good and bad scenarios as it progressed, revenge being the motivator. I enjoyed the closeness of Donny, Bill, and Antwyne, and how they helped back each other up. I did not quite expect the ending, though should not have been surprise.
I received a copy of this story through Goddess Fish Promotions, and this is my unsolicited review.
This crime fiction has so many elements that make it a stand out. The characters were so deeply developed, they almost walked off the page. The dialogue style changes were impressive. I love the mob lore too. Fun read that kept my interest.
