I learned to cook with this book, Craig Claiborne's International Cookbook and Joy of Cooking. My husband was a cook at the time, so I learned quite a lot from him as well. I really tried to put together some of the feast days for friends and got a kick out trying to cook "in season."

You need a wine cellar to cook from this book.

I love the way the recipes are broken down into how long it will take you to cook; perfect for the time conscious. Yes, some ingredients mentioned in the book would be hard to find in today's world, but I think it's always interesting to read about what was popular back then. There were also interesting facts listed in the book. Overall, I enjoyed reading all 714 pages (minus some scanned pages).

I find this cookbook sadly impractical, as it is no longer the late 60s/early 70s, and I don't have access to fresh Atlantic seafood, and I don't throw the sort of parties where caviar is appropriate. But I love it anyway, as I love all of De Groot's writing, because his voice is so distinctive and entertaining.
