My name is Lucius Samuel Stockhelm. I'm an inspectre, a paranormal detective with a ghost sidekick. I work out of my home in New Cross, Ohio. As far as I know, I'm the only non-professional inspectre conducting supernatural investigations. You can find me in the Harken, just ask Toledo the barkeep. Believe it or not, I'm not even sure why I’m doing this kind of work.
Though I have learned a cross is a powerful weapon but anointing oneself while confronting a demon isn’t that easy. Oh, and let’s not forget holy water and salt; the two most used items in my arsenal against the demonic. Yes – these are the tools I’ve been given to defeat the occult.
With being fired from the post office and a decent night’s rest becoming an issue of some importance, I need work, and soon. A distraught call to my neighbor, a professional inspectre, starts this line of dominoes, making me believe things are looking up, but they are about to go from worse to terrible. Someone is leveraging dark supernatural forces to commit a series of horrific murders. Tracking a multi-killer takes me into the dangerous underbelly of New Cross, from shady characters to demons, while I try and defend myself with archaic tools against the unholy of unholys.
In this supernatural mystery series, you’ll find more than ghosts and demons. There’s an array of interesting characters with deceitful behaviors, a plethora of occult activities, with a historical backdrop to boot. Come along and have a look – it’s just what you need to brighten your evening. Turn on your gaslamp, but make sure it’s low so you don’t spook the visitors. Now it’s time to take a peek behind the cover and see what’s on the other side of the mirror.

Ohio born author D.W. Rigsby moved to Florida, completed finishing his high school, and joined the US Army in 1991-1995 where he worked in telecommunications. Re-entering academia he earned his BS Information Systems degree in electronics/information technology and has spent over 20 years in computer networks. A special note on his site shares that ‘he’s passionate about writing stories we all enjoy. He wishes to contribute to this bonding of souls across the entire world.’ He has published three novels to date – TOKUS NUMAS (science fiction), THE BROKEN CHRISTMAS TREE (also set in Ohio), and now, INSPECTRE.
Rigsby has a gift for establishing atmosphere from the opening sentences – not an easy task when dealing with paranormal subject matter. But read the opening moments and we are there! ‘I laid in bed, waiting on Alarbus. I knew he was there. He was always there. I stared into the bleak darkness and closed my eyes. I saw the poor woman clutching her torn blouse; the knife in his hand, coming at me; his dismembered body in the hidden tunnel of my cellar. I forced my eyes open and waited to hear his groans. What would it be tonight? The long moan that goes on until daybreak or the wolf’s cry until the moon’s light has faded? Whatever it was, it would come. The wind lapped at the shutters like water against the shore. I turned onto my side, put my hand under my head, and tried to get comfortable. I turned onto my other side, laid there. A few moments passed, and I grew impatient and turned onto my back, sprawled out like the Vitruvian Man. When would Alarbus cry out? Not a night had gone by, when the hour grew late, near midnight, without his presence. Whispers from out the dark like a spider’s web weaving its way into my thoughts where it tangled. “What do you want from me?” I muttered into the night, staring at the ceiling and hoping he would answer, hoping he would tell me what he needed, then leave me be. It was what Mr. Decker, my neighbor, who dealt in these sorts of things told me. Spirits who haunt the living want the living to give them something; the key was to find out what they wanted. The hairs on my arms and neck stood on end when I heard the boards creak as though someone had entered my room. “Alarbus?” I rose from my bed. I gripped the lantern from my nightstand, adjusted the wick, and put a match to it. The globe glowed, pushing back the blackness. I spun in place, catching a glimpse of a shadow. I growled through shut ivory. “What is it you want from me? I know you want something.”
But on to the plot – ‘Does one life matter more than another? Lucius Samuel Stockhelm a former postal worker with a gun, a bottle of bourbon and a ghost will be forced to answer this question. In 1891 strange murders are happening in New Cross, Ohio. These are not the typical murders of a lover’s quarrel, robberies gone wrong, or even self-preservation. The deaths are surrounded by mysterious symbols, people seeking the extraordinary skills of a doctor to heal their loved ones, then dead people turning up. What will Luc do? Will he join forces with his neighbor to find out who’s behind the murders, or return to his normal life after the spirit that haunts him is banished? In the late nineteenth century, a man discovers that he is haunted by a ghost Alarbus and seeks the aid of a paranormal detective to get rid of it, only to end up becoming embroiled in one of the detective’s cases.’
Excellent creative juices at work in this fine novel, and the author has a solid concept of how to blend paranormal with credible beings. Recommended.
I have a major gripe and it's one I've ranted on before, because it really does irritate the life out of me. It is my very strong opinion that if I pick up a book that is labeled as book 1, I should be able to read it without confusion. If there is a book before it, even a short one, that needs to be read for it to make sense, then it isn't book 1, it's book 2. That prequel (or whatever) is book 1. A book labeled as book 1 is where a reader should be able to pick up without trouble. Can there be prequels? Sure, but they can't be integral to understanding the events of book 1 and not be counted as such.
I say all that because it's pertinent to In Light Of Death. I had no idea what was going on for well over half the book. There must have been a lot happen in that 116 page prequel that I didn't know existed when I picked up book 1. The reader is dropped into In Light of Death, lost and confused. And honestly, even once I piece together what was happening, it still felt like cheese clothe. I felt like my grip on understanding was always tenuous and Rigsby made no effort to firm anything up.
Which is such a shame. Because there toward the end, I actually came to like Stockhelm and Alarbus. I might have been interested in reading more of their adventures. But as it is, I will not be continuing the series. I just spent too much time uncertain of what was happening and trying to follow characters' leaps of logic, because (I as a reader) wasn't given enough information.
This is a really solid paranormal mystery. It begins with Lucius trying to rid himself of a ghost that has attached itself to him and turns in a mystery that really kept my interest. Alarbus and Lucius are perfectly written, as the frustrated ghost and the man who is frustrated to be haunted, as they learn to work together. The story really is compelling and engaging to read. It's a fast read, because you won't want to put it down.
this book was slow to get into at the start but once there I thoroughly enjoyed the book. the characters , Lucius Stockhelm and Alarbus (the ghost of the man Stockhelm murdered) spend a few days and nights tracking down a mysterious ritual murderer. there are loads of sub plots and characters that weave in and out of the few days while Stockhelm try's to rid himself of the Alarbus who is hunting him.
I like everything about this. the Bromance between Stockhelm and Alarbus is great, there are moments of great humour and moments of high suspense.
Id recommend it to people to read. I got this book as part of a freebie with the promise of an honest review.
This story never took off. I read 80% of the book and was hoping that it would get better but I didn't care about the characters at all. There was no character development. I would be hard pressed to even tell you what the book is about but let me try. This guy is haunted by a guy he killed (for good reason) and another guy who says that he can get rid of the ghost keeps sending first guy on errands (relating to other murders) to pay for his help getting rid of the ghost. I just didn't care who the murderer was, why the "hero" was being sent on all these stupid errands, or even why the ghost was sticking around. It took a long time for the author to get anywhere and when you got to one destination it just lead to another quest. No answers. I happily put it on my "could not finish" pile.
A macabre tale, following the ex-postman who is being haunted around what might be a late 19th century New World setting - all this isn't clear. Much takes place in the gloom and darkness of winter, and the interaction between the living and the specter was (for me) the most clever and interesting. I had to push myself to finish, discovering the implications of this as the first of a series.
As I am a gatherer of books, I collect books and ebooks from a variety of sources: Goodreads wins, Bookhub, BookFunnel, emails from authors and publishers, and others. I do lose track of their sources. But, as a reader, I feel I should give an honest, unencumbered review for all I read. In this case, I won an ebook copy recently from a Goodreads drawing.
Simply Superb. I enjoyed this book immensely. It’s very different from other books that’s I’ve read, but that’s one of the things I loved about it. The plot is very clever, and I quite enjoyed that Luc was the only one that could hear and see the ghost. The funny banter and quit wit between them was great. D.W. Rigsby has done a wonderful job with this entertaining and enthralling story. Being contacted by a spirit certainly wasn’t a normal occurrence for Luc Stockhelm. Initially Luc thought he was losing his mind, however this ghost who he named Alarbus, certainly seems real enough. Especially since he’s carrying on a conversation just like any other living human being with Luc. Alarbus needs Luc’s help, and since it looks like Luc isn’t going to get any peace from him until he completes this task, he agrees to help out. Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as Alarbus first thought, and he was sure he would be able to disappear with Luc’s help. What makes this alliance between Alarbus and Luc even more unusual, is that Luc killed him when it looked like Alarbus was about to murder a woman. Luc thinks that his neighbour Mr Decker, might be able to help with getting rid of Alarbus, although he only seems to be sending him on a wild goose chase in gathering information. Mind you the information is getting quite interesting since it looks like they may have uncovered a “Multi-Killer” operating in and around where they live. This book certainly gave me hours of enjoyment, and it’s well the 5/5 Star Rating.
Inspectre - Written by DW Rigsby When do you become friends and co-workers with a Ghost?
It's 1891 where we find Mr. Stockhelm, a former postal worker with a gun, a bottle of bourbon and a ghost, pulled into a strange task in the middle of the night to retrieve a name deposited in a cryptic message in the pages of a book at the library. He finds out innocent children are being murdered in a bizarre ritual. He's off to piece the clues together and put a stop to what is happening. There's no turning back.
What did I like? I loved this storyline, it was so interesting and captivating. The idea of working with a Ghost so save others was beyond the original.
What will you like? The lead character Mr. Stockhelm is an unusual guy that just needs some direction in his life and this Ghost is just the one to get it moving in the right direction. When he figures out what the stakes are he is gung-ho in doing all that he can to make things work. I personally could not stop reading, I started late at night and had to finish, or I couldn’t sleep. Well worth the read!!!! I received this from the author for an honest review with no other compensation.
In the year of 1891, in the town of New Cross, Ohio, Lucius Samuel Stockhelm discovers he is not alone in life. A spirit, Alarbus, has joined him with special requests. The first request is for Luc to bury his half-gone body, but only in a cemetery. They argue back and forth. Luc's neighbor, Mr Decker, becomes concerned about missing young boys. There is one boy who witnessed an abduction, and soon Alarbus and Luc are on the hunt to find the boy to keep him safe, and to find the culprits. This is a unique, captivating, paranormal investigative novel. I've never read one which is so very creative by the author. If you like paranormal stories, you'll love this one.
The book has an interesting premise. Luc killed a man and is now haunted by him. Oh, and on top of that, he was formerly possessed by a demon. Ok the code of getting tho rid himself of the ghost, he is manipulated into performing some errands. He is nosy and has a conscience so he gets in deeper until he's in mortal and spiritual danger. I liked the story, but it dragged in places and could have used a good editing to fix typos and poorly constructed sentences. He also introduced several possible romances, but, sadly, they were never followed up on. I am glad that is another book.
As I said in a review on Amazon this is not really my genre. I am not generally fond of supernatural stories. This one, however, held my attention pretty well, though I was interrupted in the read by the holiday season of Dec. 2017. I found no reason not to award five stars. There were no major distractions, no errors in characterization from one part of the book to the other, nothing in short, which got my attention. I did enjoy the characters in this book and might read another in the series merely because the characters, even Alarbus the ghost were enjoyable.
Inspectre is a murder mystery set in the 1800’s with an annoying specter, an out of work postal worker, a mysterious next door neighbor and a strange doctor who claims to heal, and a Ouija board.
This was an odd story with many characters that were not defined which made it confusing at times. It was difficult to follow the storyline but I wanted to find out who the murderer was and why the postal worker, Luc, Stockholm was being haunted by the specter. This is the beginning of a series of mysteries by Inspectre Stockholm.
It was interesting, however, to read about how difficult it was to live at the time in the 1800’s.
It is rare when you can read a book that catches you in the first page and has you bound until the end! Great premise and characters, though, I could have used more of one, and less of another, lol! There were parts that had me guessing, but truly, I just kept going to find out what happened next. From making me burst out laughing, to great story-telling, thank you Author!
Paranormal detective fantasy at its best! This reminded me a bit of what Sherlock Holmes would be like if Watson was the ghost of a man Holmes killed. The banter between Luc and Alarbus is fantastic and I laughed out loud multiple times. I am quite looking forward to the next book, which is already loading on my kindle.
Story is intriguing and style holds to the creepiness of it. Keeps your interest as your mind races to figure out all the clues before it's too late. Would recommend to all. Can't wait to read more!
Inspectre, definitely a different way to spell inspector but is that all it is? Disbursements to demonic possession or heavenly rebuke? How many people, children, must die before the reader can solve the mystery? Is it even solved? For the answers to these questions I would suggest you purchase the book forthwith. D.W. Rigsby has a true talent in telling a story. Few typos but not enough to take my enjoyment out of this read. I love a good mystery. A mystery that introduces me to a new and interesting character such as Luc Stockhelm and his "Dr. Watson" is just that much better. This book could easily morph into a continuing series as Rigsby has conjured up enough nuances and interesting twists that can be further explored in the next novel. Enjoyable read from start to finish. I recommend for all readers old enough to handle the subject matter. Violence and paranormal activity. However, the truth is out there.
Inspectre by Rigsby. Original plot, interesting storyline, but I couldn't wait till the end to see if Luc loses Alarbus. Of course, there's a tidy denouement which you'll have to read to find out.
I recieved a copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest review. My opinions are all my own and are in no way influenced by the author or publisher.
What a gloriously entertaining read.
It had a few issues, it's pacing being one and it's mix between lack of details and too much details being another. The pacing was slow and a bit all over the place. The background details were provided at seemingly random places in the book. Most times it was easy to forget I was reading something set in 1890's Ohio (which is a place I know nothing about let alone know anything about it at that time period) and not in the modern day....until some random little word reminded me. Yet there was tons of useless info about guns and times and things like that. It would have been nice to see this info spread out more and embellished upon so the reader could visualize it rather then having to rely on imagination and Google. It was obvious some research went into this...It Just would have been nice to see that research on page.
But that's really my only grip. Overall the characters were Good and felt real to their setting, the plot was Good, and it ended up being a relatively quick read.
I would recommend it for anyone who likes historical with a bit of mystery and supernatural elements and knows this time period and location.
