Many of his books deal with war and showed the German human side of things as experienced by their soldiers and families at home, for instance Das geschenkte Gesicht (The Mutilated Face), which deals with a German soldier's recovery after his sledge ran over a personnel mine and destroyed his face, and how this affected his relationship with his wife at home. It places no judgment on the German position in the war and simply deals with human beings in often desperate situations, doing what they were forced to do under German military law.
Der Arzt von Stalingrad (The Doctor of Stalingrad) made him famous and was adapted into a movie in 1958. Some 83 million copies sold of his 155 novels made him the most popular German novelist of the postwar era and many of his novels were translated and sold through book clubs. He is buried in Cologne.

Lang geleden dat ik een boek van Konsalik heb gelezen. Ik heb beter werk van hem gelezen. In dit boek lees je over een wonder medicijn HTS die kanker zou kunnen genezen. Je leest over Erika die een tumor in haar buik heeft. Haar huwelijk is niet meer zoals het is geweest en samen met haar man Karl wil ze naar Rimini. Ze gaat met de secretaresse van haar man, Marion en haar vriend. Eenmaal in Rimini horen ze over het middel HTS, met z'n allen besluiten ze naar Joegoslavië te gaan om het middel te bemachtigen. Dit is niet zo eenvoudig. Ze gaan zich splitsen en komen op boten terecht. Schietpartijen, doden door de ziekte en gekken op de schepen, dit is een krankzinnig avontuur. Bestaat het middel HTS wel? Zoja wat is het voor medicijn? Het verhaal is makkelijk te volgen, maar had wel minder dik gemogen. Soms te lang en te uitgebreid over zaken die er niet echt toe doen, of wel, maar korter hadden gemogen. Een lekker tussendoor boek.
