STEVE NILES is one of the writers responsible for bringing horror comics back to prominence, and was recently named by Fangoria magazine as one of it's "13 rising talents who promise to keep us terrified for the next 25 years."
Niles is currently working for the four top American comic publishers - Marvel, DC, Image and Dark Horse. He got his start in the industry when he formed his own publishing company called Arcane Comix, where he published, edited and adapted several comics and anthologies for Eclipse Comics. His adaptations include works by Clive Barker, Richard Matheson and Harlan Ellison.
Steve resides in Los Angeles in his bachelor pad with one cat. While there's no crawlspace, there is a questionable closet in one corner and no one is quite sure what is hidden in there...but we have an idea.
(B) 75% | More than Satisfactory Notes: Goes super-fast, all blood and blasts, but still not so exciting, albeit barbaric it's so generic, no meaning to its fighting.
Steve Niles comes along and just pushes along a storyline that really...doesn't need to be made.
We have our hero Kick Ass now in control of a bunch of gangs and is trying to do better on the street. The idea is far fetch as fuck but COULD be interesting. Do something productive with the gangs, give us a inner look at trying to make the streets better....or can do a average story of the bad guys teaming up to kill Kick-Ass but somehow she still gets the upper hand.
This is kind of a lame addition to the Kick-ass series. It's not badly written, though Niles misses the Millar edginess. Also, the art is okay for what it is but the fights scenes and such don't look particularly well done. The thing with this is that it's a fast read but not all that interesting. I wish I could write Kickass simply because I love the idea but this was just meh. A 2 out of 5.
Millar and Romita Jnr handed the book over in a difficult place, humorless and with Kick-Ass as a crime boss - leaving little scope for Steve Niles to be innovative., so essentially we have civilian as a crime boss story… just average, if that. Also Romita Jnr set the art bar so high that it was never going to be matched, nevermind beaten! If you want to give us a Black Kick-Ass, create a new concept, this will always be compared (unfavorably?) with the original, and even worse you hand it over to other creators showing little loyalty to the creation! This average and somewhat trite volume gets a 6 out of 12.
Kick-Ass raises her own street gang and fights the Juggernaut... sort of! So I was a big fan of the first volume as I thought it brought something new to the series. Now we're back with a new volume and a new creative team! The story follows Patience as she is now using Maurices old crew as her vigilante gang, as they take over all the gangs of LA while also giving her enough money to look after her family. That is until she fights a new mob and a new kingpin!
To start with what I enjoyed, I still liked Patience as a protagonist, she is a compelling character while also having a Breaking Bad vibe, as everything she does, she does for her family. I like the vigilante gang Patience uses as it reminded me of the Sons of Batman from DKR. I was a bit worried about going into this volume with the new creative team, but Steven Niles does a good job in the writing department. It's not on Mark Millar's level but it's decent and the issues are definitely more action-packed. The artwork is also good, nice and clean looking which I like to see in comics. I still miss John Romita Jr's art, but the new art is decent enough!
In terms of what I didn't like, it was mainly with the finale. Similarly to the finale at the end of the first volume, it gets a bit too over the top for my liking. Patience once again wins based on pure dumb luck, which is not a bad thing, but it feels less satisfying when she finds easy solutions when the odds are heavily against her. Also, I wasn't joking when I said she fights the Juggernaut, she literally fights a "super villain" who looks like the Juggernaut, no two ways about it! I guess you could say its a more grounded version, similar to how Big Daddy from the original series looked exactly like Batman. But it for me it added to the over the top ridiculousness to the finale that I mentioned earlier! In the end, I just wish they came up with something else for a final confrontation.
In conclusion, this was another solid volume from this series! I will still collect and read it, I just hope the next volume can improve on some of the issues.
Started reading this, and I realized that I needed to read vol.1 first. I did. And I was amazed at Mark Millar's writing even when it feels maaayyybe not full-ass (see what I did there?) he has a way of conveying these relatable characters in tough situations. Even when there is tons of action, you know who the characters are, how they feel, and why they do what they do more or less. Steve Niles story picks up with the momentum of the pace that Millar has set up, but it just doesn't have the same depth IMO. It is fun though.
I don’t think this book needs to be a Kick-Ass book, but as far as what the story is and where it’s going, I’m enjoying it a lot. This is a totally different side of Kick-Ass in a new hero that feels weirdly familiar though to the rest of the book, so I don’t mind the legacy character.
Not much has changed since Book One. Patience has been fighting her own personal war against crime. She's been using skills and tactics she learned while deployed as a soldier in Afghanistan. Several of the gangs have been absorbed into her group. Blood money is being funneled back into the community to make up for all the damage the gangs did previously. She's, essentially, Robin Hood'ing it (yet CONTINUALLY monologuing about how she's barely scraping by). There's only one local mob boss to take out, and he's a well hidden nuisance. She pushes and the boss pushes back, hiring Violencio (looking less tattooed and heavily burned since he was locked up in Book One).
More fights.. More hospital visits... A visit from an old friend... and secrets that might not make it to the grave
(At this point I'll sidebar and say that the art is also VERY different these issues. It's time like this that a strong story is needed to make the art style change less noticeable. Crime stories have a gritty feel, and at least that is a mark in the artist's favor. Book Two gives us nothing new. It feels like a shortened version of something that could have been great.) ------ Bonus: She REALLY likes jumping out of windows Bonus Bonus: Violencia armored up as Marvel's Juggernaut? Vinnie Jones did it better in the movie
An interesting premise, Kick-Ass in charge of the mob, but nothing very interesting is done with it. The fights and action are just okay, the plot is nothing new, in fact she behaves dumber than was established last volume. All these traps and ambushes were so obvious. Not too much in the way of character development, either. Too bad because Frusin is a trooper.
Volume 2 of the New Kick-Ass was excellent. The story continues with her rise to power and deals with both a new adversary and an old one. The new Kick Ass must learn to deal how to stay steps ahead of her enemies using her military skills.
All I can say about this volume is that its' a must read and eager to reading Volume 3 as it becomes available.
Not as good as the first volume, but not that bad, either. Now the new Kick-Ass is the criminal boss of Albuquerque, looking to take down one more rival and cement her position. But things are never easy. The artwork here by Frusin is good stuff--reminds me of Eduardo Risso. This isn't earth-shaking stuff, but it's an easy read and I'll be checking out the next volume soon enough.
Steve Niles and Marcelo Frusin take over and the best thing to be said about it is that it's fine. Kick-Ass has taken over a lot of the criminal activity in Albuquerque with one gang remaining. She's funneling money back into the community while treating her gang members better. She's still a gang lord though whether she likes it or not. It all just seems very derivative and by the numbers.
Actually 3.5 starts. Just can't go to 4. Don't hate what they are doing, but don't love it. Kind of drags. I'll probably keep up reading the trades when I can get them free electronically from the library, but not enough left in this series to continue with the pull box.
One of the things I like about comics is that as different authors approach existing characters they can come up with something better. The New Girl is way better than the original Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl, especially compared to the currently on-going Hit Girl story arcs.
2.5 nothing amazing but curious enough to find out what happens in vol 3 or maybe I’m bored . Doesn’t compare to the original kick ass but I appreciate what he’s trying to do with the chosen protagonist and storyline . The theme is a bit lost
The new Kick-Ass has become the head of a growing criminal empire, with the view of using it to take down all the rest. Here she comes up against some tough, smart gangsters who for some reason keep not killing her when they have the clear opportunity.
Loving the new female Kick-Ass. Great characters and thoughtful plotting combined with amazing art make this one of the best graphic novel crime/ action series. Highly recommended.
