One Master survived the inferno that destroyed the Order of the Illuminati. He may know that I survived, but does he suspect that I betrayed the Order?
Rudolf Heine has sent Hunters flooding into Westport, wreaking carnage on vampires, shifters, and mages. Normal humans are taking notice, and the shadow world teeters on the verge of being revealed.
The Hunters also may be hunting me. Do I stay and fight for my new life and my friends, or run again?
I made silver and turquoise jewelry for almost a decade, ended up in nursing school, then took a master’s in business. Along the way I worked in construction, as a newspaper editor, a teacher, and somehow found a career working with computers.
As to my other interests, I love the outdoors, especially the Rocky Mountains. I’ve skied since high school, with one broken leg and one torn ACL to show for it. I’ve hiked and camped all my life. I love to travel, though I haven’t done enough of it. I’ve seen a lot of Russia and Mexico, not enough of England. Amsterdam is amazing, and the Romanian Alps are breathtaking. Lake Tahoe is a favorite, and someday I’d like to see Banff.
I actually debated between 3 and 4 stars for this book... I still can't explain what's keeping me involved in the series but here I am, ready to pick up book 4!
During book 1 & 2 I was really curious to see which way the romance was heading... by this book I'm no further forward but not for the same reason ((rolls eyes))!
I really like the characters, but again, as in book 1, there's still no hierarchy... I don't feel Erin is too far in front as our leading lady (maybe lady is the wrong word!!)... all the characters are, well, just there!
The storylines aren't bland but they sometimes lack flavour and can end with the blink of an eye!!!
But the books keep me going so there's definitely something!
Not as good as the first two in some ways - but better in others, if this makes sense.
This one has plenty going on - a little too much. One action scene right after another without any downtime. On the other hand, Erin doesn't hide who she is and most people know at this point.
We get a new member of the group, a fun vampire named Shawna, who adds enjoyment later on. Josh has become a friend, and Trevor mainly a jerk with a final resolution that's comfortable. Sam still rocks as a boss and father figure. Blake is in the backseat due to an injury, but I have a feeling for a future romantic interest for him. Almost everyone has paired with someone romantic wise, except Erin, except for a random meeting out of the blue that is pretty shallow so far since the man is barely described. She's searching, though.
With all the build-up of the hunters, I figured some of the battles would be fiercer, but honestly even the head man seems taken down relatively easy. Erin doesn't appear as naive this time and at least shares some of that knowledge, but I'm confused on a few things. I thought being a ley line mage was rare but apparently not with this book. It's either my misunderstanding, or else the author has changed things around a bit.
We have few shifter or vampire scenes (other than red coat baddies and the new Shawna). After the cliffhanger of the second book, I figured the new Master of the city would take a bigger role in this book, but he doesn't. I like David and he's probably the only one who may be a possibility future wise for something between them, but it needs more development. Michaela is an enjoyable dhamphir character, and even Liam is getting his happiness, which is just sweet.
This does feel like a final book because of the wrap-up with the hunters, Erin finally finding a home and peace and acceptance, her deciding on her future career pursuits....but there is a fourth book, so apparently it is not the final. I'm kind of happy about that because I think Erin needs some more excitement in her life.
Supes other than the dhampirs and mages are being a bit greyed out and need a little more color added to them, and I'm curious where we'll go from here.
This is third in a UF series and you definitely want to read in order.
This is more of the same and that's a good thing. This one isn't quite as good as the others. It takes place over months and has a sequential feel to it as Erin and friends respond to a trickling invasion of leftover Hunters. I liked the aspect that showed the supernatural community come together along the lines Erin first forged. It shows how her broad-minded willingness to talk to others and give them their due worked as a pattern to build a broader understanding and permit teamwork that completely overwhelmed the enemies who thought they were all that.
Anyway, this isn't quite the four star read that the others were. But given how much I still like Erin and the secondary characters continue to delight it'll still round up to get there.
A note about Chaste: I do like that Erin isn't willing to go the one-night-stand route. And since none of her tentative relationships have turned out to be lasting this continues to be pretty chaste.
I loved all books in the series. Kickass heroine, friendship, redemption, intrigue... All there. I also love that the books focus on the story line, actual relationships and not just hookups. Sometime you really just want to read about adventure, intrigue. I hope the series continues. The story can go so many ways.
I should say right from the start that I really enjoyed this book, but the author really does take some liberties. There are so many murders, kidnappings etc in this one small city that nobody in their right mind would ever live there. In the last book Westport got a new vampire master, yet there are still dozens and dozens of vampires running around kidnapping children. It all adds to the excitement, but it does stretch my belief in the 'world' she has created. She also played games with Erin, which annoyed me;
Overall this was a fun, well paced paranormal story. If possible I would have given 4.5 stars.
I’ve really enjoyed the first three books in the Rosie O’Grady series. Wonderful characters and an interesting storyline plus great fight scenes. Funny lines and lots of laughs. What’s not to love. Check out his succubus series as well.
Another terrific outing. I like that Erin is moving forward and building a wonderful network of friends. This series holds your interest throughout and is well worth your time. A standout in this genre.
Still enjoying the overall but this is the third book in the series and things really aren’t much different in character growth or overall progression from the first book. And, gosh, it would be nice at this point if there were ANY decent romantic chemistry. Sheesh! I know urban fantasy isn’t romance but there should be at least a little bit of something in the relationship dept. I just don’t want the stories to get boring and if something doesn’t switch up a little, I’m afraid they will.
As always, BR Kingsolver has written a creative and entertaining read. The third book in this urban fantasy series continues the story established in the first two books.
Erin is still working at Rosie O’Grady’s Paranormal Bar and Grill as a bartender and is happier than she thought possible. For the first time in her life she has friends and she is helping people rather than killing them. She is looking for love, but as yet hasn’t found it, but in the meantime she has her friends and that’s more than she’s ever had before.
There seems to be a problem still in Westport, with young people going missing and vampires causing trouble. There also seems to be a distinctly alarming number of Hunters in town, leaving Erin panicking about what or who they want. However, she has friends in various parts of the paranormal community who she can ask for help or information. She’s no longer alone in facing off against her old organisation, and that makes them slightly less scary.
Erin is an interesting character who is at once naive and very very worldly wise. She has lived through real trauma during her training and also been kept very isolated. This leads to an interesting dichotomy in her character. With this third book she is more educated in the ways of ‘normal’ people and has learnt how to trust others. This book shows how all the hard work, she’s put in over the previous books to understand her new reality, has paid off.
I also really enjoy reading about the paranormal community in Westport. The characters written to surround Erin are entertaining and well thought out. Erin’s friends are written to be well rounded, consistent and they are fully fleshed out.
The writing in this book is as good as always. The standard of story telling employed by this author is very high and I enjoy reading her books tremendously. Whenever a new book comes out I try and read it within the first week. This book is another example of why I will continue to do so.
I picked up the first volume after reading a Facebook comment by a friend of a friend. She had called this "not your mama's urban fantasy."
Boy, was she right!
Rosie's Bar is a hangout for witches and mages, some half-fae, and other paranormals in Westport, a smallish Oregon city by the Pacific. It just happens to be at the intersection of two major ley lines, conduits for magical energies. A young woman called Erin McLane, who has many secrets, has sought refuge in Westport, supporting herself by working at Rosie's. Erin draws trouble after her, possibly coincidentally, but maybe because of her mysterious past.
If you enjoy urban fantasies that have compelling and likeable characters, tight plots, and humor, by al means, treat yourself to this series.
What amazes me about this author is how varied the series are. Usually an author has similar but different series, different twists on the world's they build or continuation of an existing story but with a new main character. I've read the Succubus series, the Chameleon series and now the Rosie O'Grady series. Each book I read cover to cover in a day (I read multiple books a day 🙄). They are all well written with wonderful characters. I wish the Succubus series hadn't finished, and I can't wait for the next Chameleon book, but this series has been a welcome suprise. I look forward to the next book, of this series or any other written by this author.
The series is steady on the 3 stars mark from me. What I do appreciate is that Erin’s thought patterns aren’t as robotic to me anymore. Or maybe I just getting used to the author’s style. What happened to the SUV she was using that was confiscated from two of the bounty hunters? And didn’t Frankie give her an expense credit card? I’m a little confused right now? A little anti climatic about the last council member. And wheeeeeen is Erin going to find an actual beau worth her time?? The archeologist seems planted.
Book 3 ties up some lose ends for Erin and finishes on a happy note. Not sure if more books in the series are forthcoming and the ending is a neural point to end the series, or leave it in an hiatus. Personally I'm hoping this series continues. Character development along with world building is great and we see additional characters starting to be born in the pages of this book. Overall this series is definitely worth reading.
This book is much the same as the last two. The plotting is quite similar with just a few more friends around. Erin is growing by millimeters. The similarity in the plots is underwhelming me.
Dark Dancer, the third installment in B.R. Kingsolver's entertaining series, Rosie O'Grady's Paranormal Bar and Grill, takes us deeper into the lurking danger our heroine Erin has been living under: the fear that the remaining leaders of the Illuminati, from which she escaped, will discover her location and come after her. And Erin still doesn't have a boyfriend. I mean, come on, B.R., give the woman a break!
Erin is a mage and, until 6 months ago, a Hunter for the Illuminati. Highly skilled and trained in fighting and magical arts from the time she was a child, Erin discovered that her assassination assignments were not about making the world a better place but were, instead, grabs for power by the secret society. Wracked with guilt and shame, Erin went on the run, hiding her identity, and settled down in Westport when she got a job as a bartender at Rosie O'Grady's, a well-known secret bar and grill patronized by paranormals. The larger world of humans isn't aware of most paranormals, but Erin, a mage herself, is friendly with all manner of mages, witches, Fae, vampires and shifters.
Now Hunters have started showing up in Westport, bringing murder and chaos, and Erin is convinced someone has discovered she's there and is trying to flush her out. The battles, intrigue, and suspense make a compelling narrative, and I was drawn even closer emotionally to the characters who have become Erin's friends and supporters. Her self-deprecating humor and inner turmoil of guilt fighting with her determination to survive add to the richness of the story. Upon finishing, I was delighted to find there's another book, which I promptly started reading last night.
Oh. This is my favorite of the series (so far)! A lot of action and a bit of crazy. 4.5 swords
This series continues world building in each book and I love it. In this book we really get to know the group of friends Erin has made. They are an interesting mix of skills and personalities. That might be my favorite part. :) I love when I learn more about characters naturally, especially when it truly fits the narrative. It's kind of like being a part of the group and getting to know each other.
I can't decide if I'm going to leave 4 or 5 stars. My rating may change after I think about.
I was very disappointed in this book- I was expecting so much more. The interesting parts were so few and far between that it could barely hold my interest. It was like the same old stuff. I did like the ending however.
Couldn't ask for more! This series has everything you could ask for: good writing, good characters, adventure, action, and all the paranormal you would normally have to read several books to find.
The story draws you in and keeps your attention. The action is near-constant. The characters make you want to know them; to be a part of the action.
Anyone who like to read paranormal and super-natural genres will love this series. With witches and mages, vampires and werewolves, the far and a secret organization out to cause chaos, what more could you want?
Now that I've finished reading this series I'm off to explore what other books and series are available by this author. I hope you'll enjoy the same!
I enjoyed the strong capable women working together. Learning about the different types of magic is fun too. I would recommend reading the books in order but it is probably not necessary.
