With Us in the Wilderness - Bible Study Book: A Study of the Book of Numbers

Rate this book
The Book of Numbers continues the historical narrative in Exodus, the story of God’s people newly freed from Egypt’s shackles and wandering toward the promised land. Numbers is a story of wilderness wandering, but it’s also a story of God’s presence among His beloved.

Join Lauren Chandler in this 7-session, in-depth study of the Book of Numbers and God’s people. Discover how even when they rebelled—and this book tells of many rebellions—God’s love and promises remained. It’s in that love and those promises the children of Israel found their identity and where we must find ours today.

I’m really loving this study. I don’t know if it’s the history or the focus on the tribes and the vast number of people that were out there with Moses in the wilderness, but it feels epic to me. That God is pouring into me how big this story is. The temple now resides in our hearts, for those that know Jesus and the whole time I’m studying these people of the promise land— I think they must be so in awe of how Jesus is in us, the veil torn.

It’s alot of days and a lot of Old Testament numbers and Leviticus to trudge thru, yet somehow Lauren brings a freshness to this study. I’m a visual learner, so I love that she loves maps. Seeing how the temple was land out and the tribes surrounding it. It just brings something to the study. A realness to how it truly happened.

I absolutely loved this study! I have never been drawn to study Numbers before, but Lifeway had the videos available for free so I bought the book and followed along.

First, I would encourage anyone who is tempted to work through the book to do so without worrying about having access to the videos. One of my huge pet peeves is Bible Study books that are useless with having access to the ridiculously expensive leader's kit that contains the accompanying videos. You can complete the entire study even if you don't watch the videos.

I disagree with the reviewer who complained about "busy work" in the homework. Yes, the homework was deep and took over half an hour each day. But, that was what made it so rich for me! Digging into the details, and writing them down in charts made them come alive in my mind and made me remember them more. I also loved that she pulled in scripture from other parts of the Bible to teach with. One of the things I appreciated about the physical book is that the pages were good sized with plenty of margin to write down verses or notes.

There was so much about this study that was wonderful. I now think of Numbers as it’s Hebrew name of In the Wilderness. The arrangement of the camp is a beautiful picture of God at the center of our lives. Learning the wilderness experience in depth has already made other parts of the Bible more meaningful to me. I am in the middle of a year in Psalms and I loved learning that even though Korah was killed by God because of his rebellion, the sons of Korah later wrote Psalms that worshiped and praised God. I have always heard the phrase "the Lord is my portion" but I had an Ah-ha moment when I realized it refers to the fact that the Levites were not given land as the rest of the tribes were because God was their portion and their inheritance. The biggest lesson out of it for me is that our wilderness experiences are not mistakes or cruelty, but times of testing from God and that He is there with us during the whole journey. We can choose to do it the easy way or the hard way.

I really hope Lauren writes more Bible studies. I would love to roll straight into Joshua and continue the journey. I would do another one of her studies with no hesitation!

I really enjoyed doing this Bible Study with a group of friends. The subject matter was made interesting by the questions, the application, charts/lists/etc. The author did a great job of helping us dive into the text and not be afraid of the hard sections. I wasn't too excited about the book of the Bible (it's not my favorite) but by the end, I was really glad to have gone on the journey and I learned a lot.

This was a fantastic study, the homework was a little intense, but so worth it! So thankful for this in depth and intentional study - we can truly learn more about who God is and apply lessons learned, from this Old Testament book full names and (you guessed it) numbers.

This is the first Bible Study I’ve ever done and it was a great change up in my quiet times. Lauren Chandler covered so much in this study—both academic and personal. I really enjoyed and would recommend this study.

A really nice study to get me thinking through a book of the Bible that normally intimidates (or gasp maybe even bores) me. She brought it to life in a new way and helped me to start applying the truths in it to my own life. I did not necessarily relate with a resounding YES to all of her questions to make it more relatable, but I do feel that this study has brought me closer to the Lord and in deeper communion with Him. That's a win in my books any day!

God & Glam Companion Read for the Numbers

This is the best Biblical study guide I've read. It's a great mix of accessibility and depth, while leading the reader on a scavenger hunt through the Bible to uncover the truth on their own journey to the Promised Land.

This is one of my favorite Bible studies I have done. I have watched the videos with Lifeway Online Bible studies and enjoyed the series so much. I also did it in combination with First 5 through Proverbs 31. I bought this study years ago and just had not gotten to it, so when I started this study on Numbers, I combined them.

First of all, I didn’t even remember what the book of Numbers was. It sounds tedious, but Lauren Chandler is quick to point out, that the original Hebrew meaning actually meant “In the Wilderness,” which does better describe the book. While there are two sets of numbers, which count the people as the begin the wandering in the wilderness and another when the generation has passed and a new generation will go to the Promised Land, the rest of the book is about this time in the wilderness. It is basically, a continuation of Exodus - Moses leading the people - and has many stories you might know - the spies going to the promised land, the budding of Aaron’s staff, the story of Balaam and the talking donkey and Joshua gaining leadership.

At the end, she notes “Life seems to be a series of mountaintop moments, wilderness wanderings, and mundane days in the plains.” p212

Just like the Israelites, we do go through all of these times in our lives. This study is thorough. There are a lot of days with a lot of work. (30-45 min some days), but I learned so much from it and enjoyed the back stories and way she put it together.

I honestly never expected to love studying Numbers so much.
1️⃣ Seeing myself in the Israelites; also their seasons of mountaintop, valley, and “plains days”.
2️⃣ Seeing God’s promises and how so much pointed to Jesus.
3️⃣ Seeing the numerous times God reminds Israel to remember his faithfulness and even provides means of remembering— because he knows how important that is to our faith. Made my story-loving heart thankful!
4️⃣ Thanking God for the people in my life he’s given me as mentors along the way, as Joshua was able to have a front row seat to Moses’ relationship with God.
5️⃣ Even just the overlapping timing of some other books I read with overlapping themes, and our church doing a mini series on part of Numbers as part of a capital campaign for a new home for our church.
So much good stuff to glean from Numbers that I’ll continue to chew on! Thank you Lauren Chandler for your faithfulness in writing this!

Really gleaned a lot from this study of Numbers, and liked Lauren Chandler; she maintained focus, called attention to things I could have easily missed, and added humor at times.

My only suggestion to others is to complete the study during a quiet season of life, as there is quite a bit of writing with this workbook. Most of what was suggested tied in with the daily study; however, there were a few sections where I thought some of the questions a bit much, like the section with the sacrifices that were required of each tribe. I ended up typing the required sacrifice, as the sacrifice was repeated for each tribe, and glued that into my book instead or writing the same thing twelve times.

So, choose a quiet time in life to complete this wonderful study, use a pencil 🙂, and don't be too critical of yourself if you skip sections. Even Lauren makes that suggestion at the beginning of the study - to not let the 'homework' become a burden.

I learned so much. Highly recommend.

A great study!! Chandler breaks down all the information in Numbers into digestible chunks so you can fully see how God orchestrated the Israelites’ wilderness wanderings in preparation for the Promised Land. Most of all, how all of it foreshadows Jesus: God’s plan for our salvation.

On a more personal note: No study is a one size fits all when it comes to the questions or points. That has nothing to do with the author being ineffective; it has everything to do with where God has you in that moment of your life. The last day of the seventh week reinforced this with the analogies to mountaintops, wilderness, and the mundane plains— the seasons of our live. Don’t espect every question or point to “hit a home run” with you. That’s the point of growing. I intend to do this study again sometime. I want to see where I have grown.

Much like the study my small group did last year on Hebrews, who would think to do a study of the book of Numbers? Along with it's neighbors Leviticus and Deuteronomy, it's the part of the Bible turns people off of Bible reading plans.

However, Lauren Chandler focuses this study around the fact that Deuteronomy is the story of the people of God wandering in the wilderness and reminds us of other biblical stories of wandering in the wilderness, which I think is a pretty relatable topic for most of us living in the world today. There's a lot of reading, but also a lot of thinking/feeling questions, and is definitely one of those studies where you can get out what you put in.

Meh. I’m sure it’s great for some people. I can see that it is. But for me, it wasn’t it. I want to study the history and mindset of the people THEN. And then let me associate with them as I am led by God to do so. But she did a lot of the leading into places that were so off and not relevant for me, it just took attention away. I wound up skipping those parts and just trying to lean into the Word more.

There were some great points/wisdom in this, but there was A LOT of busy work! The homework was cumbersome, with no real reason for answering at least 50% of it. I love homework and really digging into a study, but busy work frustrates me.

First study by this author. Excellent.
The material is great. Did this study with a group of community women over a long period of time. We didn't conform to the week to week time-line. Highly recommend!

Such a great study! Highly recommend.
I did it solo without the videos. I’m sure they are a plus but I didn’t feel as if there were gaps because of it.

Would have given it 5 stars if the video sessions were a little more teach-y and less like a devotional. The book itself is a great study in an often overlooked books of Scripture.

Really enjoyed this study. I have read the book of numbers before, but never enjoyed it. This study helped me appreciate the book better, especially the lists of names and numbers. Lauren’s video teaching are encouraging not just repeating all the homework but highlighting themes in a way that relates to our everyday life.
