Benyamin (born 1971, Benny Daniel) is an Indian novelist and short story writer in Malayalam language from Nhettur, Kulanada, Pattanamtitta district of the south Indian state of Kerala. He is residing in the Kingdom of Bahrain since 1992, from the age of twenty, and his works appear regularly on Malayalam publications in Kerala.

Since I won't be able to read a book for the entire week due to some personal commitments, thought I could finish a book quickly so I wouldn't slow down on my yearly plans. The novel is written by Benyamin, who is known for his novel ആടുജീവിതം Aadujeevitham. The entire novel takes inspiration from a short passage at the beginning of the First Book Of Kings in the Holy Bible where a girl from Shunem called Abeesagin is mentioned. She is appointed by the court to meet the needs of the ailing King David and my needs, I meant ANY NEEDS NECESSARY.

What is fascinating about the novel is how the author built a connection between this small passage and the Song Of Songs depicting a romance between King Solomon and Abeesagin. He tells a story that ends in tragedy due to the malicious acts of people who wanted only power and would do anything to attain it.

The first part of the story describes of the meeting of the lovers and it is depicted in the most beautiful way possible with the author borrowing phrases from the Bible itself at times. He has done justice in depicting the beauty of Abeesagin and their eventual falling in love. But where the book slows down is when explaining the fight for power between two parties which has striking similarities to many stories from history including Ramayana. I don't think you will find me exaggerating when I say that some characters even resembled characters from A Game of Thrones.

After reading this, I had a conflict in my mind whether to give this book 3 or 4 stars as the start of the novel deserved 5 while towards the end, the quality started to deteriorate. Still, I decided to give it 4 stars after I finished writing the second paragraph of this review as I realized that I had missed the message of the novel until then. The author wanted to tell the story of Abeesagin, a girl who was used by men in their struggle for power and was discarded as a useless rag afterwards. She don't have much voice in her destiny which is determined by her greedy father or a foolish lover or an ageing king or power hungry queens. The author speaks in large volumes about many women in the society who, just like Abeesagin, are just mere pawns in the acts of the might and that is what finally made my mind

Beautiful story telling as usual by Benyamin..but a little bit too much of divine love... But Kudos to the author for making up a story' from just the names in the Bible..

"അബീശഗിൻ" - ആടുജീവിതത്തിനു ശേഷം ഒറ്റയിരിപ്പിന് വായിച്ചു തീർത്ത ബെന്യാമിൻ്റെ മറ്റൊരു പുസ്തകം. "ഒരു പെണ്ണിനൊപ്പം ശയിക്കേണ്ടത് ശരീരം കൊണ്ടല്ല മനസ്സ് കൊണ്ടാണ്" അബീശഗിൻ അനശ്വരമായ ഒരു പ്രണയ കഥയാണ്. മുപ്പത് സംവത്സരങ്ങൾക്ക് മുൻപുള്ള ഓർമകളിലൂടെയാണ് ഈ പ്രണയകാവ്യം ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത്. ഒന്നിക്കുവാൻ പല അവസരങ്ങളുണ്ടായിട്ടും ഒന്നിക്കാതെ പോയ സോളമൻ - അബീശഗിൻ പ്രണയകാവ്യമാണ് ബെന്യാമിൻ ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിൽ പറയുന്നത്. മരണനേരത്ത് പോലും അബീശഗിനോടുള്ള പ്രണയവും കുറ്റബോധവും ആയിരുന്നു സോളമൻ രാജാവിൻ്റെ ഉള്ളിൽ. അവളെ കാണുമ്പോഴെല്ലാം ഇരട്ട പിറന്ന മാൻകുട്ടിയെപ്പോലെ എൻ്റെ ഉള്ളം തുള്ളിച്ചാടാറുണ്ടെന്നാണ് സോളമൻ രാജാവ് പറഞ്ഞത്. ഇത്രമേൽ മനോഹരമായി ഈ അനശ്വര പ്രണയത്തെ വർണ്ണിക്കാൻ മറ്റാർക്കും സാധിക്കുമെന്ന് തോന്നുന്നില്ല. ബെന്യാമിൻ്റെ മറ്റൊരു മാസ്റ്റർപീസ്👌🏻😍 ❤"മടങ്ങിവരുക.. എൻ്റെ ശൂനേംകാരത്തീ, മടങ്ങിവരുക.. ഞങ്ങൾ നിന്നെ ഒന്നു കണ്ടുകൊള്ളട്ടെ.. മടങ്ങിവരുക.. മടങ്ങിവരുക"❤

Compared to a life of love which is lived out to all eternity, the story of a lost love does attract a bigger audience. It could be due to the fact that everyone has fallen in love at least once and a good subset of this populace would have also lost in love. Maybe it is this common chord that binds it all together but there is an abundance of such lost in love stories in literature and cinema. Benyamin’s Abeesagin is also a story of love and loss with the novelty being the part that it is a story set in biblical times.

King David is in power when the narrative begins and while he is a legend, the flipside shows him to be a frail old man and his son Solomon who is heir apparent is a hopeless dreamer. One night while he cavorts around his father’s lands, his eyes fall on Abeesagin who is the daughter of one his slaves. There isn’t much of a story to speak of but the language is poetic and reminiscent of biblical renderings.

Most of the books you read give you a little fragment of memory to carry with you but some do not. This story falls into the second category. It is neither bad nor good, it is just there. A quick and easy read !

ബൈബിളിൽ ഒരു പേര് കൊണ്ട് മാത്രം സ്വാധീനമുള്ള  അബീശഗിൻ എന്ന പെൺകുട്ടിക്ക്, കഥാകൃത്തിൻ്റെ ഭാവനയിൽ ഒരു പ്രണയഗീതം രചിക്കുകയാണ് ഈ കഥയിലൂടെ... സോളമൻ്റെ ഉത്തമഗീതം പോലും അവൾക്കുവേണ്ടി ആയിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ... ചരിത്രത്തിൻ്റെ ഗതി തന്നെ മാറ്റിമറിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള, പേരു പോലും എവിടെയും രേഖപ്പെടുത്താതെ മറഞ്ഞു പോയ, ഒരുപാട് സ്ത്രീകൾക്ക് വേണ്ടി... കൂടെ അധികാരത്തിൻ്റെ പ്രഭയിൽ ദൗർബല്യങ്ങളും നിസ്സഹായതകളും ഒളിച്ചു വച്ച് കടന്നു പോയ സോളമനെ പോലെ ഒരുപാട് ഭരണാധികാരികൾക്ക് വേണ്ടി...

cant call it as a novel... a short story... i suppose... ഭാരതീയ ഇതിഹാസങ്ങളെ അധികരിച്ചു ഒരുപാട് കൃതികൾ മലയാളത്തിലുണ്ട്. എന്നാൽ ബൈബിളിലെ ഒരു കഥാപാത്രത്തെ, അതും ഒരു അപ്രധാന കഥാപാത്രത്തെ കേന്ദ്രീകരിച്ചു ഒരു കൃതി ഇല്ലെന്നു തന്നെ പറയാം. 'രണ്ടാമൂഴം' പോലെ, മൂലകഥയിലെ വിടവുകൾ സ്വന്തം ഭാവന കൊണ്ട് നികത്തിയാണ് അബീശഗിന്റെ കഥ ബെന്യാമിൻ പറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഒരു നോവൽ ആക്കാൻ വേണ്ടി വെറുതെ വലിച്ചു നീട്ടിയും, ഉപകഥകളും പറഞ്ഞും വായനക്കാരെ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടിക്കാത്തത് എടുത്തു പറയേണ്ടതാണ്. ഒരു നോവെല്ലയുടെ വലുപ്പം പോലുമില്ലെങ്കിലും, നല്ല വായനാനുഭവം നൽകിയ നോവൽ.

How a king loses his cool to the love of his life. A fictional extension of the old testament. ( Kings and Song of Solomon). The love which Solomon had for Abeesagain was sweeter than wine.

This book is intense in some parts but it failed to keep that flow going for me.

കാലം നമുക്കുപിന്നിൽ നെയ്തുവച്ച ഇതിഹാസങ്ങളിലും  പുരാണങ്ങളിലുമൊക്കെ പലപ്പോഴും ശ്രദ്ധിക്കപെടാതെ പോകുന്ന ചില പെൺ  കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ കാണാം.   മണ്ണിനും പെണ്ണിനും വേണ്ടിയുള്ള തേരോട്ടങ്ങൾക്കിടയിൽ  ആണ്ടുപോകുന്ന ആ പെൺകരുത്തിന്റെ മനോവ്യപാരങ്ങളും അവൾ  ആ ചിത്രത്തിനു നൽകിയ മിഴിവും എത്രമാത്രമെന്നും  പലപ്പോഴും സാഹിത്യാദരന്മാരാൽ  വിവക്ഷിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. കുമാരനാശാന്റെ ചിന്താവിഷ്ടയായ സീതയിൽനിന്നാരംഭിച്ച്, ഊർമ്മിള,  ഗാന്ധാരി എന്നിങ്ങനെ കഥകളിൽ ഉറങ്ങിയവരെ ഉണർത്തിയ ധാരാളം സൃഷ്ടികൾ ഉണ്ടായിട്ടുണ്ട്.

പഴയനിയമത്തിലെ അബീശഗിൻ എന്ന സ്ത്രീയെയും  അവളെ പ്രണയിച്ച ശലോമോൻ  രാജാവിന്റെയും കഥയാണ് ബെന്യാമിൻ ഈ നീണ്ടകഥയിൽ വിവരിക്കുന്നത്.  ദാവീദിന്റെ പുത്രനായ ശലോമോൻ ഒരു മഞ്ഞുപെയ്യുന്ന തണുത്ത വെളുപ്പാൻകാലത്തെ  സവാരിക്കിടയിൽ  അബീശഗിനിൽ അനുരക്തനാകുന്നു. എന്നാൽ കാലം പലപ്പോഴും അയാളെ പ്രണയത്തിൽ നിന്നും തട്ടിമാറ്റികൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. കൈവരുമായിരുന്ന  എല്ലാ സൗഭാഗ്യങ്ങളും അവൾക്കുവേണ്ടി ഉപേക്ഷിക്കാൻ അയാൾ  തയ്യാറായിരുന്നു. രാജപദവി സ്വീകരിക്കേണ്ടിവരുമ്പോൾ അയാൾ പ്രണയിനിക്കുവേണ്ടി സ്വന്തം സഹോദരനെ കൊല്ലുന്നു. രാജത്വത്തിന്റെ ആദ്യകൊല അവിടെ ആരംഭിക്കുന്നു. പീന്നീട് അയാളുടെ തേരോട്ടങ്ങളിലും വെട്ടിപ്പിടിക്കലുകളിലും ആരോടോന്നില്ലാത്ത  പകയിൽ അന്തപ്പുരം വെപ്പാട്ടികളെ കൊണ്ട് നിറച്ചു. ഒടുവിൽ വാർദ്ധ്യക്യത്തിന്റെ പുതപ്പിൽ ആരും സഹായിക്കാൻ ഇല്ലാതെ കിടക്കുമ്പോൾ അയാൾ അബീശഗിനിലെ  പ്രണയം  ഓർമ്മിക്കുന്നു .

പ്രണയം മുന്തിരി ചാറുപോലെ ഉന്മാദം നിറയ്ക്കുമ്പോഴും   രാജ്യത്തിനുവേണ്ടി ഫറോവ രാജാവിന്റെ മകളെ സ്വീകരിക്കേണ്ടി വരുമ്പോഴും വീണ്ടും  അബീശഗിനിലെ  പ്രണയം കയ്പുനിറയുന്നു. അയാളിലെ  പ്രണയത്തിന്റെ  ഉത്തമഗീതം അതോടു കൂടി  അവസാനിക്കുന്നു.
സത്യവേദ പുസ്തകത്തിൽ ഒരു ചെറുകനലായി  പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ട ഒരാശയത്തെ ഒരു മനോഹര സുന്ദരശില്പമാക്കി മാറ്റി യിരിക്കുകയാണ് ബെന്യാമിൻ.

ബൈബിളിലെ രാജാക്കന്മാരുടെ ഒന്നാം പുസ്തകത്തിൽ ദാവീദിന്റെ പരിചാരികമാരിൽ ഒരാളായി മാത്രം അറിയപ്പെട്ടവളാണ് അബീശഗിൻഗിൻ. എങ്കിലും മറ്റുള്ള ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് പരിചാരികമാരിൽ നിന്ന് അവളെ വ്യത്യസ്തയാക്കിയത് അവൾക്കൊരു പേരുണ്ടായിരുന്നു എന്നതാണ്. സോളമന്റെയും അവന്റെ പ്രണയിനി ശൂനേംകാരത്തി അബീശഗിന്റെയും പ്രണയ കാവ്യമാണ് ബെന്ന്യാമിൻ തന്റെ വായനകാർക്ക് സമർപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. ഇസ്രായേൽ രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ രാജാവായി മാറിയെങ്കിലും തന്റെ പ്രണയിനിയെ സ്വന്തമാക്കാൻ സോളമന് സാധിക്കുന്നില്ല. തന്റെ അമ്മയുടെ വാശിക്ക് മുമ്പിൽ നിസ്സഹായനായി അബീശഗിനിനെ കൈവിടാനേ അവന് സാധിച്ചുള്ളു. തന്റെ പ്രണയത്തിന്റെ "ഉത്തമഗീതം" " വീഞ്ഞിനെക്കാൾ മാധുര്യത്തിലും വീര്യത്തിലും അവൾക്കായി സമർപ്പിച്ച സോളമന്റെ അവസാന ശ്വാസത്തിലും അവൾ മറയാതെ നിന്നു.

ബൈബിളിലെ പഴയനിയമത്തിലെ ഇതിലെ രാജാക്കന്മാരുടെ രാജാക്കന്മാരുടെ പുസ്തകത്തിലെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളെ തികച്ചും വ്യത്യസ്തമായ ഒരു രീതിയിൽ നോക്കി കാണുന്നതിനും അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനും ഗ്രന്ഥകർത്താവ് ശ്രമിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ആശ്രമത്തിൽ വിജയിക്കാൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തിനു സാധിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്...വേദപുസ്തകത്തിലെ ആശയങ്ങൾക്ക് ഉപരിയായി അതിലൂടെ തികച്ചും വ്യത്യസ്തമായ ഒരു രീതിയിൽ ഒരു പ്രണയകഥ നമുക്ക് മുന്നിൽ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുകയാണ് ബെന്യാമിൻ.എന്നാൽ ബൈബിളിലെ ഇതിവൃത്തങ്ങൾക്കൊപ്പം ചേർത്തുവെക്കുമ്പോൾ മാത്രമാണ് ഇതിലെ ആശയങ്ങൾ പൂർണമാകുന്നത്. പുറമേനിന്ന് ആദ്യമായി ഈ കൃതി വായിക്കുന്ന ഒരാൾക്ക് നല്ല ആശയങ്ങൾ എത്രമാത്രം ഉൾക്കൊള്ളാൻ കഴിയുന്നു എന്നത് സംശയകരമാണ്

The book is based on the biblical story of Solomon and Abeesagin in the Song of Solomon.
It narrates the events that constantly kept Solomon and Abeesagin apart, throughout their life. This is the story of a man who betrayed his half brother and took his kingdom, a king broke his promise for a woman and a brother getting killed by his half brother. The true love of Solomon and Abeesagin is the heart of this novel. Very short novel(70 pages) but an interesting one.
