One vampire. One witch. A love that should have survived the ages. Avery lived by three simple rules. Never be outside after dusk. Never give up fighting to survive. Never give in to the one man who ruled her heart and shattered everything they shared when he walked away from her. Conner has one mission: to capture the witch who killed his father and make her pay for her crimes. The problem is she’s the only woman he’s ever loved. The same witch whose innocent kiss made his immortal heart quicken with her freely given love. He walked away to save her life, and in return, she took everything from him. She left his world in ruins, and his heart a shattered mess. Can he ignore the attraction that still burns between them and get justice for those she murdered in cold blood? Or will her past be enough to convince him to forgive her?

It's about surviving the odds, and learn to shine from within, no matter what happens. It contains dark situation, and past memories and scars that the heroine has overcome, and lived through to reclaim what she lost. If you're sensitive to that situation, this book isn't for you.

That was disappointing... And not because the book was dark. Because it was and I was fine with that. I have read darker stories. Or because the book was full of triggers (rapes and torturing continually). Because it was and I did not really mind. I have read more taboo reads. Or because the main protagonist was a cheating bastard with the lowest IQ that I have seen in any of the paranormal romance books that I have read. Because he was and I could live with that.
But really I thought that the love story between Avery the toughest witch and Connor the king of vampires was a complete mess.
Their hatred that spans in hundred of years is based on a huge misunderstanding. And this misunderstanding was based on the fact that Connor blindly and stupidly trusted his father, while he never trusted the woman that he loved.
It is a fairly short story but very soon I had figured out all the twists which were only happening for the sake of twists.
So,yes I have to admit that this was my least favourite book by this author.
Okay, so wow. This book was dark...like DARK. It was tough to read what Avery went through and to continue experiencing a different type of torture from the man she loved for over 200 years...I felt so bad for her.
I really liked this story and when Conner found the truth, I needed more from him. I wish we got into his head a lot more than the one chapter we did get pretty early on. I think it would have fully cemented what had happened to them so long ago. I know it was Avery's story and her hardship to over come, but in order for them to move forward I think the readers needed to feel his pain and guilt.
I really enjoyed their story but I wanted it fleshed out. I know Hutchins was writing a novella when she came up with this story... BUT I NEEDED A FULL FLESHED OUT BOOK.
I think the book was poorly written, violence for the sake of violence! The sexual content was just so awkwardly worded that it was unappealing and a bit cringe worthy. Very disappointed, I did read to the end but it really didn't get any better.
I read it within a couple hours. It’s definitely a page turner. Heed the trigger warnings because the torture and brutality is intense. I love dark reads so it was perfect for me. A couple things that prevented me from giving it 5 stars. One...the grudge that spanned centuries was over a misunderstanding. Second...he always watched her from afar so why wait as long as he did to take her. He killed so many innocent parents but they didn’t seem to bother Avery. Third..I would have liked to know what happened with the school, the children and especially Clara. It was glossed over. Having said this, I still want to continue reading the series. I’m excited for Laura’s Book.

To simply put it, this book destroyed me. Absolutely destroyed me. I went from flipping the pages quickly to crying due to the emotion this book demanded from me. Amelia Hutchins as usual, delivers a story that just grabs you from your heart and sucks you in til the very last pages. When we finally find out what happened to Avery and all that she’s been through it just made me cry. Especially when we find out about Hope that part particularly killed me. Overall the book took me on an emotional roller coaster and I can say that even with the dark themes to it, I thorough enjoyed reading Avery and Connors story.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book gets a disturbing dark five stars.Vengeance has never looked so good.Word of warning though,do not read close to bedtime as it casts a shadow as black as a raven's wing that continues beating even after the last page is put to rest that lingers into your dreamscape.
As any Amelia Hutchins book, this one grabs you by the throat, latches on to your pulse, and sucks the very essence from your soul as you writhe in ecstasy from the pain and beauty and punishment of it all.
Centuries ago, vampire Prince Conner saved the young witch Avery from the plague and brought her to his home, vowing to protect her forever. Knowing he wanted her with him always, Conner saved Avery with a combination of a spell and his blood, making her immortal like him. Their love grew but was forbidden, for vampires and witches coupling brought a death sentence down upon their heads. Conner, feeling he had to break the hold they had on each other in order to save Avery, walked away to slumber eternally and left Avery with his father the King with the promise he would protect Avery, erase her memories, and then let her start her love and life over without the taint of him.
The next Conner knew, he was awakened by his brother to learn Avery had slaughtered his entire family as well as thousands more vampires. Conner vowed to make Avery pay and waited patiently until he was able to make her to stand punishment. But Avery tells a much darker tale of what happened during that lost time.
No one, and I mean no one, does dark and depraved romance like Amelia. There’s something about her novels that rip you apart and spit you out while at the same time enveloping you in a dizzy erotic spell from which you cannot escape. And this is no different.
Avery and Conner are explosive once he has her back in his clutches. Now the King of the vampires in England, Conner wants nothing more than to make Avery pay while at the same time losing himself in her silky flesh. And even though it’s been 200 years, Avery feels her body responding to Conner the way it always did.
Conner is cruel. He’s had a poison of revenge running through his immortal veins for two centuries. In order to save those she loves, Avery lets herself become his prisoner but can never forgive Conner for leaving her to the evils she experienced.
I love how Conner and Avery experienced every single emotion with each other while working through what had happened to her while in his father’s castle while Conner lay cold and sleeping in the ground.
I laughed. I cried. I screamed at my kindle. Such an amazing ride. Amelia has a way of pulling you into her story so you actually feel the emotions whilst reading. Avery has been hiding in the mountains from the only man she’s ever loved. She’s protecting herself from her past life with Connor. Connor will get Avery back wheee he needs her. He will punish her for her actions so long ago. 2 hundred years they have been apart and every day they’ve wanted each other. I couldn’t put this stunning read down. Can’t wait to read more in the next book.
The storyline itself was good, but the dialogue was incredibly repetitve and full of exposition and endless monologuing. Once you get past the fact that the main H speaks like a cartoon villain, the plot becomes more palatable.
You get a little worried when straight off the bat before you even read chapter 1, there is not one but two warnings... and they are there for a very good reason. If you’ve read anything by Amelia Hutchins before you know she writes dark and intense stories with characters that are very broken, but souls are strong and fight to live on. And that is exactly what you get in this one, please heed my warning this books is very dark and contains triggers, so if you are looking for rainbows, unicorns and sunshine, you have come to the wrong book.
Avery is the strongest and oldest witch alive, but she is not trusted by the other witches, as Avery has a past with the enemies. Teaching at a school that is hidden in the mountains, never staying out past sunset or getting up before dawn, Avery believes she is safe from Connor and the rest of the Vampires that are after her.
After watching her for 200 years it’s now time for Connor to get his revenge against Avery. But what he never expected was to find out that the enemy he thought he knew wasn’t what it all seemed. Both are under the impression that other betrayed and abused their trust.
I did really enjoy this story, it’s full of twists, turns, dark, intense, horrifying and romantic scenes, It has a little something for everyone. My heart broke for Avery after discovering what had happened to her, but by the end it was all back together. Amelia has done such a fantastic job with this book, she would give little hints, remarks throughout the book in regards to what Avery had endured, which caused my mind to go in overdrive imagining what happened, all to finally find out and be so shocked, slightly disturbed and be no where as close to the truth. (To be a fly on the wall to read Amelia’s web browser history 😉) I am really hoping to get another novella on Connor and Avery in the future.
Amelia has given us yet another Emotional Roller Coaster story. If you are looking for a cookie cutter love story this is not it, but if you are looking for a book that sucks you in and doesn’t let go this IS the book for you. This story will make you feel ever emotion possible as you go through what the characters go through.
In true Amelia style, this story’s heroine who has been through he!! only too come out stronger for it, Avery, the hero in this story is more of an anti-hero who you will hate to love, Conner. There is a whole lot of hotness between the two main characters and if they can get passed what they went through in the past they might have a changes of having a HEA (Amelia style).
Warring: This book does have some triggers and the author warns you about them on the 1st page. What these characters went through to get to where they are now was not sunshine and roses but it made them who they are, Survivors!
I highly recommend this book and ALL of Amelia Hutchins’ books. I can’t wait until the next story she gives us.
This book so exceeded my expectations I can't even believe it. If you've read Amelia Hutchins before, you know she doesn't mess around. She's dark and she's intense and her ladies always start off a little broken. But OMG...Avery. I have no doubt that many readers are going to find a little bit (or a lot) of themselves in Avery. She hasn't just been broken, she has been utterly destroyed and Amelia strips her down so completely that your heart is destroyed in the process. My heart ached for her, truly ached. Because that's what Amelia does, she creates these unbelievable characters that wrap themselves so deeply around that they sink right into your soul.
Avery's history, all that she endured, is so brutal. Conner's hurt and the betrayal he's had to live with has completely consumed him as well and you can feel how torn apart he is inside. The truth he has to come to accept is heartbreaking. How the two of them come together to put all their pieces back together is a dark and intense journey. I love them, absolutely love them.
Amelia’s books have been getting darker lately and this is probably the darkest to date.
I wasn’t expecting the dark turn this book took. I wasn’t expecting the extensive damage that Avery was dealt by Connors family.
Avery is a very strong female character that had to deal with being completely destroyed by her “family” and came back and took control of her life after it all happened. Currently Avery runs a school for young witches and especially those that are seen as “broken”. Connor has been the king of Vampires for 200 years and has finally been able to get his hands on Avery. Both are under the impression the other betrayed and abused there trust.
At parts this story got difficult to read because your imagination takes hold and the torture Avery went through is hard to imagine..
In the end, like Amelia always does, she throws in some major twists! I hope that we see more of this story from Amelia’s writing and not just the group of authors writing this series.
Avery the strongest witch in the world is turned immortal by Connor the Prince of Vampires to save her life from the plague. They eventually fall in love.
However the King of Vampires has other ideas for what he was suppose to protect and set free when Connor goes into an internal sleep.
Connor comes for Avery even though at first he doesn't want to hear or believe the dark and twisted things his father did to Avery let alone allowed others to do until he sees the damage himself. (This is where the trigger warnings come to play because it is truly TWISTED). Man I wouldn't be so forgiving being called a whole until he was forced to see otherwise. She definitely loves him considering she could have kicked his ads at any time.
Can Connor and Avery move on from the past to a HEA? You'll have to read it to find out!
It took me a while to read this. I never want Amelia’s books to end. I just want to crawl inside them and stay there a while. This book gripped me and didn’t let go. Avery is a bad ass witch who learned to take no sh**! When you first start to read Avery’s story it sucks you in. You’re right there with her experiencing her fear. Her love, her hatred.
Connor is a vampire determined to get to the truth and will stop at nothing to get it. Together they become a force to be reckoned with.
This book touched me in so many ways. You feel Avery’s heart wrenching story and you don’t want to stop listening because you want to hear how she became this bad ass survivor. She hides herself from the world and from Connor in fear that he just won’t understand or accept what has been done. But others will understand she is more powerful than she seems
I usually love Amelia’s work. But this book has to be my least favorite. The story was cookie cutter, repetitive and their was introduction of characters with little understanding of who they were. There was an extraordinary amount of time repeating about how Conner felt betrayed by Avery where some of those repetitive could have been spent on developing a ton of characters that were introduced and played supposedly crucial roles in the two main characters fate. But instead people were tossed in there given a few sentences as to there significance and then killed. Plus the level of brutality that Avery suffered was over the top. I get that she likes to bring these women back from these brutal pasts and come out stronger, but this was on the sick side of things for me.
Take it with a grain of salt, just not my cup of tea this go around.
This story starts out calm and peaceful, lulls you into a false sense of security but it’s anything but! Avery is a powerful witch with a past involving a vampire who is out for revenge. Conner knows she’s his mate but wants to punish her for killing his family and he has finally caught up with her. Now that he has her the calm is gone and a dark, hot story evolves. She can’t help but want him and he can’t keep his hands to himself even when he doesn’t believe the reasoning behind slaughtering his family. Their story is violent and primal but in the end, very very awesome! Conner and Avery will draw you into the dark with them.
I’m a little speechless on this. Not really sure how to put my feelings together. This book reminded me, emotionally, of how I felt reading Claiming the Dragon King but its much darker. My heart broke. I was angry. I was sad. Those are my most common emotions throughout this book. From what happened to Avery and the way Connor and everyone treated her because they didn’t know. I cannot say I enjoyed the book due to the content but Amelia’s writing was good, as always. If you are looking for a dark read that pulls these emotions from you, this is a good book to read. There is a HEA. And I’m really glad Laura gets a book. I am looking forward to diving more into this world.
If you are looking for a good vampire and witch read this is it. Paranormal romances are one of my favorites, but I’ve been in a slump with this sub genre, well not anymore. The first chapter had me enthralled by Avery and Conner stories. Avery is a strong female lead, she is a powerful witch that fell in love with a vampire. Conner the King of his hive, in love with the woman that killed his family. You see their stories unfold and the prejudices that surround them. I read this book through one sitting and couldn’t put it down. I will warn that this story may have triggers for some readers. It does go into dark experiences, but all in all it was well worth the read. I loved every word of it and soaked it up like a sponge.
This book was just like I said, WOW. The main character, Avery, was extremely rough to read because of the horrible things done to her. Please do not let that stop you reading this book because as we all know and love about Amelia that is just the beginning! She is one amazing character!! I usually end up really liking the main Male character in Amelia's stories but I still think Connor is an ass! This book is way shorter than Amelia's other books but it is part of a series with other authors. You do not have to read this series in any order or even read the other books in this series. I highly recommend this book!!
I'm left reeling from this story, but in a good way. Amelia has done it again. What she has done was totally topped her last book IF she is wicked. Which by the way is also full of twists and darkness, but from a different series. Anyways, this was so intriguing and keeps you invested in the characters and their story. The trials these two went through and what happened to get to the amazing end was inspiring. This book was truly hands down spectacularly written. I cant wait for October to get here to get Laura's story.
Another wild ride from Amelia Hutchins. A witch and a vaporware not supposed to fall in love. But as we know, love wants what it wants. And the road to love never did run smooth, did it? Amelia takes on a journey of twists and turns, heart break and devastation, than bends your mind. You will hate the characters. You will love the characters. You will cry and want to hurt some of the characters. I was sad when it was over. And can't wait for them next story. Also would love to see Hope have her story told! Definitely worth reading!
I laughed.
Scorned lovers.. Check Crazy sexy vampires... Check Badass witches...Check Second Chance Love Story... Triple Checked!!!
Just when you think Hutchins can't get any better or come up with anymore decadent characters.. she's all like.. here hold my beer for a minute.
I'd love to spend a few minutes in her mind just to see where all these different personalities come from. I can't wait to read Laura's story... PS ... No this is not a cliffhanger. The next story is based on a secondary character, so hide the pitchfork and get your booty to reading.
Wow is all I can say after reading this book. I'm still left reeling from this story, from the get go your thrust into the heart of Avery and Connor. There so much anger, hate, deceit, and betrayal. And when I thought I had it all figured out I was hit with a major surprise that I didn't see coming that left me totally shock. I will say this much though this story will horrify you, make you hot with desire, all while you sit back with your mouth agape and your eyes wide. I really hope this turn into a series.
This book had we gripped from the get go. You could tell from the way Avery spoke that something was hunting her and if she was discovered it meant her death. We get swept away in the action of the book very quickly, vampire hives, magic schools and dark secrets keep the story moving at a fast pace.
This book was so hot, addictive, disturbing and amazing. Can't recommend it enough, so what are you waiting for get reading!
