What does visionary entrepreneur, Elon Musk, know that you don’t? Randy Kirk and co-author Alinka Rutkowska propose to answer that question and more in their book THE ELON MUSK METHOD. As an avid reader of business books, I have to admit that I was a little disappointed in the review copy that I received. (note: I refer to the author in this review in the singular, as Mr. Kirk regularly refers to himself throughout the book. I’m not sure what capacity Ms. Rutkowska served, but as she is listed as co-author, I’m giving her billing here, as well.)
Kirk dissects Musk’s methodologies and beliefs in a straightforward, concise manner that is always welcome by the enterprising reader. He’s clearly done his research, and Musk’s quotes from the public record are liberally scattered throughout. The author lays the groundwork on a multi-point framework and works through what he suggests sets Musk apart from the rest of the pack. (Spoiler alert: Kirk approaches the hero-worship level in places. Despite his proposition that Musk is some kind of superhuman, I’m relatively certain that the man is… just a man.)
The chapters break down that framework further, discussing each point in some depth, citing examples from Musk’s career, and frequently underlined with further supporting evidence from Kirk’s career, as well. The information is useful, the insights are enlightening.
This is my first Elon Musk book, but it won’t be my last. Admittedly, the man is fascinating, and what he’s accomplished in his life thus far is astounding. With that said, though, this book left me scratching my head. I’m not a newbie to business books, by any means, and this work was less than impressive. It boils down to a lot of public-record quotes, some advice, a few references to the author wishing he could ask Musk this question or that, and not a lot else that the reader could not find in most other business books.
With all that said, this is a short and easy to digest book of business concepts. I give it three stars for its conciseness, balanced with a lacking spark.
Whenever I read a book that identifies a famous person and then recommends that we can improve our lives by emulating some of the things they do my first question is why this person. Well, the author answered that question very well in the first two chapters. The author rightly points out that there are some things that Elon Musk does that we could emulate in our life to make it better and I agree. The book is well written and does a good job of describing who Elon Musk is and what behaviors are worth emulating. The author then explains very well how to use the lessons from Elon Musk in our lives. The reader can greatly benefit from reading this book. If they do a small portion of the things Elon Musk does, I think they can improve themselves.
This book was interesting and it was great to learn the decision making steps that Elon Musk uses in his life. There were times that I felt I was an arm length away, because many of the strategies are not what I would use. That said, I enjoyed learning about the man and discovering how he set up his companies. It is also good to see he is human and has shared his turn of failures or disruptions. I would recommend it to any entrepreneur or person who loves learning about highly successful people.
Soon as I read the first few chapters I kept going. Very please with the information was given. A must for those who want an example to know what it takes to be successful.
