The Metal Virus is spreading fast, and there's not a lot left that Sonic and the Resistance can do to stop it, except evacuate. But even that seems like it's going to be a problem, as everything comes down to...The Last Minute.

If you're looking for plot progression, you're in the wrong book. This volume is mostly devoted to the same day, covered from different perspectives in each issue so that you get the complete picture by the end and have to try and piece it together as you go. Character work isn't something I'd call synonymous with Sonic The Hedgehog, but this volume definitely dials that up to eleven with the focus clearly on the characters and their plight. Despair is also a new feeling for a Sonic book, but this one pulls it off. The stakes are undeniably high, and it doesn't look like there's any good way out of this one for anyone.

Surprisingly deep and emotionally powerful, if a little short on actual movement.

Review: Continuing the "Metal Virus" saga (oddly and discomfiting-ly coincidental to read during a pandemic), this volume is good, but a bit of a mixed bag. You don't feel that the story is going forward, since three of the four issues occur concurrently. This is why, previously in the Archie run, there were two series: Sonic, and Sonic Universe, to allow for multiple concurrent stories. So, while good, it is a bit annoying. However, this split narrative does allow for characters besides Sonic to shine, and some good character moments. The first arc in these series was decidedly Sonic-centric (as it should be, really), but the writer is doing a good job of trying to remind you that other people live and contribute to this world as well.
At the same time, things are getting darker, and since I know it won't last, I love the drama of it all. Sonic is pushed to doubt himself and what he believes, and ponder if he made a mistake in believing in the good of other people. Friends and companions blame him, or at least, he blames himself when he sees the bad shape they are in. It's a great question and blow to throw at our hero, and it's cool to see it play out.

Issue-by-Issue Synopsis:
#21- Tails is close to uncovering the cure for the metal virus. Unfortunately, his city is under attack from a new batch of zombots. Tangle and Whisper work to evacuate the city get into position for a rescue shuttle from Amy at Restoration HQ. Meanwhile, Dr. Starline goes behind Robotnik's back to hire the Deadly Six, alien/monster things with their own agenda. Tails is able to get the data he needs for the cure, but at that moment, his lab is attacked by zombots, destroying the data. He rendezvouses with the rescue shuttle, only to find out that Restoration HQ itself has fallen, with only one shuttle escaping.
#22- This story occurs concurrently with 21. Amy is channeling her best Sally Acorn as she tries to keep the Restoration organized. however, the place is overcrowded with refugees. The Chaotix arrive with a contained but infected Charmy, and then a refugee who was infected but hiding it begins attacking the others. Charmy breaks out, and soon everyone is in full-scale evacuation and panic mode. Due to the close quarters, few are able to escape, and most are turned into zombots, including Vanilla and Vector. Amy meets up with Tangle, Whisper, and Tails as shown in the previous issue.
#23- Concurrent with the previous two issues. Sonic is running, trying to generate the data for Tails' cure, when he runs into Robotnik and Dr. Starline. The two evil doctors are arguing, as it seems that the zombots are evolving out of Robotnik's control. Sonic demands Robotnik stop the virus, but Robotnik rebuts, saying he couldn't even if he wanted to. The two fight, and Starline realizes he's become disillusioned with his hero, Robotnik. sonic struggles with overcoming the virus, and realizes that, if he had simply not believed in the good in everyone, including Robotnik as Mr. Tinker and Metal Sonic, much of this wouldn't have happened. After escaping, Starline returns to summon the Deadly Six, who can control machines telepathically. Starline realizes they are probably planning to double-cross him, so he gathers some insurance. Sonic heads for Tangle's home village, now under attack.
#24- Things are getting darker for our heroes. Sonic meets up with the other heroes, evacuating Tangle's village, but there are few. Besides Sonic's own doubts, he realizes that many people hold him responsible for not stopping Robotnik when he had the chance, and therefore allowing this to happen. Gemerl realizes that Sonic's speed is becoming less effective at holding back the virus. Tangle has also been infected, but she consoles Sonic, stating clearly she doesn't think it's his fault. She heroically stays behind until no longer able to fight, letting everyone else escape.

Seeing how dark this is getting makes me wonder if they actually eased up on the emotion restrictions they placed on Sonic in the past… because it’s getting brutal as more and more Resistance members succumb to the virus.

Those bonds that were so positive and fun in the beginning are ripping my heart to shreds. But I like the angst so it’s fine.

I’m definitely wondering how this will all be resolved, because the image looks very bleak at the moment!!

short series review: The 2017 IGN reboot reunites the Archie Comics team of artists and writers, breathing much-needed new life into the Sonic franchise after the events of the Sonic Forces video game. Some new elements and characters were hit or miss, but overall, it's a joy to see the gang back together. Series review to come!

Who would have guessed a Sonic the Hedgehog zombie --er, I mean 'zombot'-- story would be so compelling? I certainly didn't see it coming!

This volume definitely helped make things feel more hopeless. Which, hey, stakes--love 'em, and it definitely helps solidify this as a pretty dark arc. I mean, with Cream watching her mother getting zombified, to Whisper actually not even speaking at a normal voice but YELLING for the first time when Tangle got zombified (though it probably would have been more impactful for me had I read their individual volume)...yeah the zombifications were a lot more intense this volume. But having both backups of the plans (from both Sonic and Tails) just felt a bit cheap and like it was to extend the story. Like have Sonic with the data but they have to find a new lab in order to produce a cure.

There was one panel where the zombots looked like Gen Z zombies (able to use each other to climb over walls). And the fact that the virus not only infects humanoids but any living thing? Even if you survived the initial outbreak, you would have trouble finding food and would eventually starve to death because there would be nothing left to plant or harvest.

I was not familiar with the "Deadly Six." It might have been from another comic series or from the games, but I feel like their introduction wasn't as well done as some other characters that appeared in other parts of the canon.

Sonic finally has to experience what the rest of us do--exhaustion from running. He's had it too good for too long.

I liked the fact that the cover of issue #24 showed the characters and all their zombot forms, but it was really busy. The art in general was really good, as per usual for this series.

Nooooooo Eggman literally said "We're not so different, you and I" to Sonic TToTT. And I'm not getting the dislike for Dr. Starline (at least in the comments of the website I read the volumes on). Is it because he's actually smart and not headstrong/a planner? Because that's what I call a villain. A disillusioned fan whose hero doesn't live up to his expectations? His archetype is the same as Syndrome's from The Incredibles!

Hi everyone! It’s Ariel here, and I can’t wait to tell you about a super exciting book called "Sonic the Hedgehog: Volume 6, The Last Minute."

In this book, there’s a big problem! A nasty disease called the Metal Virus is turning everyone into robotic zombies, and even Sonic is at risk. The virus was created by the evil Dr. Eggman, and it’s spreading everywhere. Sonic is still fast enough to avoid getting turned into a zombie, but it’s getting harder and harder.

Sonic and his friends—Tails, Amy, and the rest of the Restoration team—come up with a plan to fix everything. Tails is going to make an antidote to cure the virus, Amy is going to help people and organize rescues, and Sonic will try to figure out more about the virus to help them find a cure. But when things don’t go as planned, they have to act really quickly to save the world.

I loved reading this book because it’s full of action and adventure. The drawings are really cool and show Sonic and his friends fighting against the virus and trying to stop Dr. Eggman’s evil plan.

My favorite part was when Sonic and his friends are racing against time to stop the virus. It’s really thrilling and shows how they work together to solve the problem.

If you like fast-paced action and heroes working together to save the day, you’ll definitely enjoy "Sonic the Hedgehog: Volume 6, The Last Minute." It’s an amazing book with lots of excitement and heroism!

Happy reading!

10/10 JUST for the final story alone, Holy shit Issue 24, lets get into that first
I LOVED Issue 24, Alot of things have gone wrong and now the characters are all caught up
Sonics speed might not fend off the virus for long, and is mentally and physically exhausted
Tails is going to fucking lose it if he hasn't already
Cream is dead inside
Amy is tired as fuck
Espio is broken, he lost his 2 team members and is now considering he should've KILLED Mr Tinker.
Whisper is... oh god. After reading the mini series, this hits so fucking hard when she loses Tangle
Tangle... Tangle still manages to put up a smile, even after being infected. and goes out with the 2nd coolest sendoff
Vector goes out like a CHAMP
Starline's perception of Dr Eggman is completely broken, and is now bringing in the DEADLY SIX.
Eggman is great as usual. even having a moment of reflection in issue 23 about being mr tinker again
The art is AMAZING, for all 4 stories, you feel like it gets worse as it goes on, even when it can't.
15/10

The stakes are getting so real! We have very few surviving main characters that haven't been infected by the Metal Virus. Only Amy Rose, Tails, Cream, Espio, Silver, and Whisper remain among our main cast, Rouge is apparently missing from action, and Sonic is becoming less resistant to the Metal Virus by the minute. Meanwhile, Dr. Starline has recruited the Deadly Six who plan to betray him and Dr. Eggman, though Dr. Starline appears to have some sort of trickery up his sleeve as well. With all the devastation, it looks like we're finally heading toward a resolution toward this arc, and I'm so excited!

I commend Ian Flynn for writing what is essentially a zombie comic/story for children and general audiences, but with the pain, devastation, emotion, and ramifications of an adult zombie story. In this volume, it was devastating seeing Cream, Espio, and Whisper mourn the zombification of Vanilla, Vector, and Tangle, as you feel no character really have immunity in this battle.

I do like the focus on the characters just reacting to the events as they unfold as we see a lot of characters just trying to survive. The situation just keeps getting worse every time they think they have some way of surviving the virus, something happens either because of an error they make or something they did not think of. It is pretty tragic and the emotion feels genuine. Also Dr. Starline is losing more and more faith in Eggman as he no longer sees him as the legend that he believed he was and it feels like he is going to become the main villain soon.

flynn didnt need to go this hard making the rawest sonic comic
(spoiler)'s sacrifice and the pages where (spoiler) found out (spoiler) left behind make this a 10/10 honestly
and having 3 issues all take place at the same time as everything goes wrong for 3 different groups, its fantastic

I find this volume to be an improvement over the previous volume. We see the potential for a solution, we see more of a concrete antagonist for Sonic to fight against, and we get some Sonic and Amy interaction. Still quite depressing and a detraction from the upbeat Sonic I know and love.

I never would have thought that a Sonic-themed comic would shock me so freaking much. I even felt my heart break seeing another failure and zero chance of mission success. I can't wait for the next volume in Polish!

Continues to amp up the tension and drama with dynamic action. Fun to see Sonic trying to force himself to remain optimistic. The art team does a fantastic job making him look exhausted which sells the mess this group is in.

The idea that every issue takes place at the same time but focused on a different character seems cool at first, but then it becomes tedious. Just move the story forward already!
