Christopher Coleman lives in Maryland with his wife and two children. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland with a degree in English Literature. A fan of classic and modern horror and thriller movies, his favorite movies are Rosemary's Baby and The Ring. When he's not writing fiction, you can find him reading, taking his kids to and from various sporting activities or watching horror movies with his wife who shares his affinity for the horror genre. His books will creep you out and leave you scared to turn off the lights and go to sleep.
Usually by the last book in a series, you can tell whether the author has had enough and just wanted to end the story, it whether they still love it. In this series case, I believe the author still had a liking for his characters. I loved the last book.
I'm not sure how but with each book, Coleman manages to demonstrate growth as an author. I appreciated that shift in narrator / perspective and it revived my waning interest. I failed to take good notes for this one but I found myself much more engaged this time around. I still can't figure out if there's any real rhyme or reason to the biology behind the crabs. Every book introduces some new facet that doesn't align well with what was previously established. I suspect the author hadn't given this key element enough thought and planning - and there's a fair amount of retconning and fudging of details to try to force some semblance of structure. I got this far so I may as well see how it all wraps up in book 4.
I was intrigued by book 3 as I understood it to be about Danielle who in the earlier books had seemed a more interesting character; certainly more positive and practical than Dominic. She managed to get away when Tom and James were captured and when this story starts she has holed up in a basement bar within the cordoned off area, venturing out initially for food. As time goes on, she develops more ambitious goals and creates the list of the title, crossing each item off as she achieves it.
The main problem with this book is that it seems to have been written by a different author. The first two volumes for me were a workmanlike 3 star rating. They had their issues, but on the whole the storytelling carried it through. However, here it never gets off the ground because it is bogged down all the time with plodding, overwritten prose. The smallest action has a paragraph dedicated to it, and it's as if the author was in a competition to use as many words out of a thesaurus as possible. Words are also used in totally the wrong context. At one point, a gun is 'strewn' and at another it is 'scattered', both when the weapons are dropped. In a scene where Danielle shoots some of the crab-monsters, their blood (though the simple word blood isn't sufficient, it's "crimson explosions") dye their bodies "like a Pollack" which as far as I'm aware is a type of fish unless it's meant as a nickname for a person from Poland.
The character is also made to behave so foolishly that it's a miracle she survives. On at least two occasions, she shuts her eyes when faced with a gang of crab monsters. And she's a total klutz, dropping her rifle and generally being ditsy. At one point, she leaves it by a doorway, is saved by random chance, and then fails to pick up the gun on the way out when she and the people she's with depart by the same exit. They are then all placed in danger by her lack of the weapon, as only one other character is armed and only with a pistol, when they need to be able to shoot the creatures from a distance.
There are obvious continuity problems which threw me out of the story, such as when a character has his arms stretched out before him and then, on the same page, has them tied behind him. Not only that but he transfers from the floor to a chair. A car is abandoned, there's no hint that they take a bag from it, but at the end of the story it seems they did (hard to see how they lugged it around when engaging in the various activities they have to) because suddenly they have the passports it contained. I could go on, but these were just a few of the issues that spoiled my reading enjoyment. It's a mystery why it is like this when the first two volumes were miles better: perhaps they were edited by a third party? I'm awarding a barely scraped OK 2 stars because it does pick up a little towards the end, but it was a severe disappointment.
The third book in Coleman's series is good. It has the same telltale vision of a desolate town where rabid monsters lurk around every corner and the protagonist struggles to fight for survival. But for me, this one doesn't hold the same enchantment as the first two.
Firstly, this story is written in third person instead of first, probably because the main character is not Dominic. This is the norm nowadays, but after reading Coleman's first two of the series, which were written in first, it makes this one fall flat and I feel separated from Danielle in a way I don't with Dominic.
Secondly, Dominic is brought back right about midstory, which I feel is too soon. His arrival would be better suited closer to the end so you don't have two very capable main characters running around. This both downplays the Dominic from the first two books, as he is now a background character to Danielle, and also makes the reader worry less about the safety of both characters since neither are suddenly killed off or turned in a miraculous twist.
I do enjoy the fact that Danielle has the list. I am a firm believer that in times of stress, a person should have something to ground them and center any spiralling emotions. I'm also glad she holds onto the list and continues it even in the end, showing that she is a determined woman of her word.
My fear with this series is that there may be too many. The novelty is in the uncertainty. -The first book starts in medias res, which is vague and filled with questions. -The second book has a gradual increase in information that may or may not be true and continues the journey of rescue or escape. -The third is a simple survival book with no real questions and no real answers. No mystery.
Don't get me wrong, this book is good, just not as good as the first two.
This book is kind of meh. I didn't really get drawn into it. Danielle's general mission is pretty neat, but her decision making process along the way seems a little flawed. Especially for someone who's been in survival mode for 4 months. It brings to mind the clownishness of 'The Walking Dead'.
It annoyed me a bit that there seems to have been confusion over which weapons Danielle had and how many rounds were left in each. It kept changing.
Also, 4'000 lbs is the weight of a heavy SUV, not a little sports car. I feel like someone who didn't really know much about cars would still be able to notice that fact.
The ghosts or crabs or whatever they actually were have escaped containment and are loose in the country, the United States. These creatures have one goal, eat. And people are their preferred meal. If they just break the skin, the humans also turn into the creatures. No, they are not aliens, they were created in a lab, right here in the good ole USA, by the military. Now destroying their creators and anything else in their way. What can stop them?
This was the third book in the series and I loved it almost as much as the first two. It was great to see Danielle again, as well as some of the characters from the first two, as well as some new ones. The crabs are alive and well, and scary as ever. There was a great deal of action and destruction in this book, and some questions were answered. I can't wait for the next one!
Do not listen to the people whom complained that the third book wasn't as good as the two first one! It takes another direction but in a really good way. I'm so hooked with that series that I didn't listen a single minute of tv for the last week. I'll count the next eleven days till the next one is available!
It was good, but to me not as great as books 1 and 2. It centers on Danielle alone in the cordon area, and I kind of missed the group storyline. (Spoiler alert) in the end she finds the others but 60 to 70 percent is her struggles. Read it just because its part of the series and is a good read!
I have to say, I was excited to read the next series from this author. The story was insanely tense. I will say, one character, in particular, made me excited and had me yell: "YES!", yet another character was removed once and for all. That character always got on my nerve, to be honest. Still, the character I was waiting for made me happy and I hope that character remains. :) Great book!
This story centers around Danielle and her survival and plan to get out of Maripo County cordon. Will she find the others? Have they escaped? Will she succeed in getting out? Is there something different about the ghosts that are still around after all the snow has melted? So many questions. Hold on to your seat as you read this well told tale! Highly recommend
Glad Danielle and Dominic are back together to continue the fight. The story is so fast paced that I didn't want to out it down. Anxiously waiting for book 4!!
Wow is all I can say. What action! There are so many heart stopping scenes in this episode. And what a kid Michael turned out to be… I love that kid. And the ending! You have to read this one!
I had no idea a 3rd book in the series came out. So glad I found out tho. The crabs are changing and Danielle isn't playing. Read it! 4th comes out in 11days!!!!
I like the storyline and the book is entertaining enough. I have a pet peeve with this author; too many bad similies. Think twice before you type "like".
This is the third installment to this series. Danielle is a survivor and has made a list that brings her closer to her goals. Her ultimate one is to leave this hell behind and somehow make sure the rest of the world knows about what the government has allowed to happen. What used to be people are now albino monsters and they are quick as well as savage. Will Danielle finish her list or will she become one of them? Great series and looking forward to book four!!
Once again this author has written an awesome thriller, very gruesome. I was really impressed with how Danielle 's character turned out. Looking forward to the next book.
Just finished reading this latest entry in the "They Came With the Snow" series. I've been intrigued with this series since the very first sentence of Book One. Certainly one of the most original takes on a "Zombie Apocalypse" scenario that I've ever had the pleasure of reading.
Christopher Coleman doesn't let his readers stop turning pages. With non-stop action, harrowing human drama, and mysteries lurking at the edge of every page, what's not to love?
If you're not reading this series, you really should be!
For that matter, I highly recommend all of Christopher's works. If you're a fan of horror, you will not be disappointed.
This third installment was so full of everything an apocalyptic book requires. There was fear, courage, anger and hope. Danielle was determined to complete her ‘list of goals’ and she was on track to complete those goals. I liked every moment of terror as I read along to see if she and the others would be safe or if their time on earth would be at an end. Now that the ‘corrupted’ ones are free from the cordon area, what is the rest of the world going to do? If there is another book, I have many questions that need to be answered.
A very creepy but exciting story, something similar to zombies, but not, actually. A real page-turner. Only problem is he needs a good proofreader. I'm not a member of the "grammar police," but there were so many spelling and grammatical errors that it started to distract from the story for me.
I absolutely LOVE anything by Christopher Coleman!!! Book 3 answers several of my questions about who, what, and where, but not WHY. Suspense thriller with a sci-fi twist plenty of action and adventure. This author keeps me always read for more!!! If you have not tried any of his series, what are you waiting for they are all AMAZING!!!
Another terrific book in the They Came With The Snow series. Danielle has a list of what she wants to accomplish. Can she overcome all the obstacles put in her way? Read The List to find out what she and her comrades must endure.
This is the third of a three book series. All three books were very good. I think I stayed on the edge of my seat. I have already bought some of Mr. Coleman's books and can't wait to read them. I hope you'll enjoy these books too. Happy Reading.
