I really enjoyed reading Eleanor Duckett's Death and Life in the Tenth Century. This was good, readable, well researched history. I have found a new historian that I actually enjoyed reading. Yeah!!! Will read everything she has written.

Straight forward Germanic focused history of the tenth century. From Charles the Fat to Otto III. Very clear and informative about an array of subjects about life at that time. Although one does wish the book covered common life in more detail, this was often passed over for the kings and popes and their conflicts. I always want to know what Otto the shitless is doing in each century!

3 stars for the rather dull prose
5 stars for the accurate historical information; which is what truly matters in a book about history

Hence the 4 stars

History can be factual and still very well written and engaging ie Ernle Bradford.

This is still very much worth the read for enthusiasts of the Middle Ages such as I

I loved it. This is not only one of the most comprehensive and informative books on a part of the early middle ages, it is the most readable and engaging I have encountered.

Older book that is a great introduction to the 'Century of Iron' in Europe - doesn't miss much and provides a lot of jumping-off points to relevant chroniclers and additional texts that supplement this area from both a scholarly and colloquial standpoint.
