The Sherlock Holmes Collection

Rate this book
The consulting detective, Sherlock Holmes, and his faithful companion Dr Watson, are two of fiction's most intriguing figures.

This volume contains all four Sherlock Holmes novels - A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of the Four, The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Valley of Fear - as well as all the short stories originally collected in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes.

Facing down Victorian villains and elusive criminals with nothing more than his formidable powers of observation, Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes still has an unmatched ability to entertain.

Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.

Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.

A Favourite Quote: “‘Your life is not your own,’ he said. ‘Keep your hands off it.’
“‘What use is it to anyone?’
“‘How can you tell? The example of patient suffering is in itself the most precious of all lessons to an impatient world.’”
A Favourite Beautiful Quote: “[T]he heath-covered countryside, with the glowing clumps of flowering gorse, seemed all the more beautiful to eyes which were weary of the duns and drabs and slate-greys of London. Holmes and I walked along the broad, sandy road inhaling the fresh morning air, and rejoicing in the music of the birds and the fresh breath of the spring. From a rise of the road on the shoulder of Crooksbury Hill, we could see the grim Hall bristling out from amidst the ancient oaks, which, old as they were, were still younger than the building which they surrounded.”
A Favourite Humorous Quote: “Miss Morstan's demeanour was as resolute and collected as ever. I endeavoured to cheer and amuse her by reminiscences of my adventures in Afghanistan; but, to tell the truth, I was myself so excited at our situation, and so curious as to our destination, that my stories were slightly involved. To this day she declares that I told her one moving anecdote as to how a musket looked into my tent at the dead of night, and how I fired a double-barrelled tiger cub at it.”

I finally did it! After 67 hours 44 minutes and 59 secs I FINALLY finished the audio book of "The Sherlock Holmes Collection" by Arthur Conan Doyle. I've never read the Sherlock Holmes stories so I was a bit wary of starting them but I actually enjoyed them. There are a few that I got a bit lost with and had to rewind but there was only one or two times that I had to do that. Stephen Scalon is an excellent narrator, very clearly spoken and a variety of voices for the characters. The only things I didnt like was 1. The length its sooooo long but you can obviously listen to a story and stop it. The second thing is the language it uses, I know its written in a different time but my good he uses complicated words!
