David Xavier—and all those he loved or counted as friends—would forever be mouth-watering targets to men of evil intent. His wealth could settle a small country’s foreign debt. Because of this, from the moment of his birth, his mother obscured his identity. Reborn as the man named Gabriel, however, he walked free into a world where the innocents and the weak cried out for a defender, for the hand of justice, for a guardian angel.

In response, an elite, paramilitary operation, Guardian, rose to stand between the evil men did and those whom they would make their victims. Gabriel was CEO. His goal was worthy and all consuming, but fighting on the side of angels didn’t make his nights less lonely or soothe the ache in his heart for hearth, home, and family.

He needed a courageous woman of unflinching integrity, of goodness and honor, to stand at his side. He’d given up hope of finding such a person. He thought he’d found her years ago. The sex had been combustible, but they’d met at the very birth of Guardian, when he hadn’t time for a personal life. Chalk it up to fate or bad timing.

Over the years, twenty-eight-year-old, Denver ER nurse, Anna Harriger, watched as all her friends, many of whom were former patients, found their soul mates, got married, and had children. Shoot, she’d been a bridesmaid six times. She figured she was destined to be the “crazy friend” that everyone liked but who, at the end of the day, went home to a solitary apartment. She wanted love. She wanted a family, but she refused to compromise her standards. She’d met her Prince Charming, but unlike the fairytale, after an incendiary night of sex, she’d never seen him again. Chalk it up to fate or bad timing.

When events throw them together again, each find their attraction vastly more than simply physical, but once again, Gabriel’s responsibilities pull them apart. After an absence of almost half a year, Gabriel returns for Anna, but she has vanished. He will do whatever it takes, for as long as it takes, to find her and bring her home, but fear dogs his efforts. Who was she running from? Why did she disappear so thoroughly? He knew his Anna. She’d have a very good reason.

A great story. I can't help feel a little nostalgic for the era this story is set in. This is described perfectly. This is the time I grew up in where mobile phones were not commonplace, people were not instantly contact able, infact most people smart phone today has more features than the spy gear of that era, also encapsulates the attutedes of the era and VHS of course (I remember them well).

Usually I hate prequels, to me they usually feel like spinoffs and unnecessary. This is not the case here, this book is a prequel done correctly. It is not only a great story of Gabriel, but of Guardian as well. A great Chance encounters as well. Thrn the book comes back to the present and picks up where the main story left off.

I like that the story show bother characters humanitarian dides but also dispite the physical differences bot the characters are a strong as each other. This story is as much Anns's as well. As I have seen Gabrial from other books of the series I pretty much pieced his character together but Anna is not mentioned as much so it was great to get to know her, though she is one of the few characters not involved with Guardian she save people in her own way one life at a time.

Dnf. It’s too long, too much info about everything but their romance! Plot didn’t make sense.

Firstly this book is written well. I like to read books that I don’t need to spell check every two minutes, or try to understand what a sentence means. Having said that it’s boring. I’m less than halfway through and there’s been a few conversations with them, one tiny sex scene, and that’s it! In six years that’s it.

The second problem I have with this book is MASSIVE. Gabriel runs his security company really well and he cares for women. So why on earth would that evil man still work with him, or be friends with him??? It doesn’t make sense that a man like Gabriel, who is so honourable would have a friend like Craig McNair. He’s already attacked a woman! Why is he still working with him!!! 😡😡😡 He obviously doesn’t trust him as he warned Anna, after she first met him to, “ Stay away from Craig.” So he knows he can’t be trusted with women??? 😡 Gabriel’s company is working the security and the case of a woman who has been attacked by a serial killer, and his second in command can’t be trusted with women??? Nope! Wouldn’t happen.

Quite a few of the reviews, have said the same as me about this book. So I’m not the only one who thinks it doesn’t make sense.

The other thing about this book, is the detail about Gabriel’s teams in war zones. This is maybe going to sound harsh, but I don’t want to read about war tactics and missions. If I did I wouldn’t read romance books. But then this isn’t a romance book! There hasn’t been any romance!! Even their one night stand had zero romance. I’m not really sure what category this book does fall into to be fair, as the serial killer case, just seems to him running round recruiting men and talking about the case.

For some reason Kris Michaels always worries about her new book on release day. That woman has got to stop worrying and just relax. She writes fantastic books (I have read them all) with absorbing stories and awesome characters.

Even though this is the start of a new off-shoot series from the Kings of Guardian, it explains Gabriel setting up Guardian with both an international and a domestic branch, how he met Anna, and his involvement with the King family. The road to the union with their soulmate is never easy for a Guardian and Gabriel and Anna get their fair share of road bumps.

From the moment we meet Gabriel in this book, he takes command. Each new interaction with other characters shows how he gains the loyalty of those around him. Anna is his perfect match. She is an "in-charge" type that gets things done and I loved her first encounter with Gabriel. A supporting cast of well developed characters keeps the story flowing smoothly.

The only troubling part of the story is the confirmation of the situation in South Dakota.

If you haven't read a Kris Michaels' book, you need to - start with "Jacob" (do NOT skip "Joseph"). If you can read M/M books - "A Heart's Desire" is such a fantastic story that I reread it a LOT (I skip the smexy parts - not my thing but love the story). If you read fantasy and M/M - the Everlight series "An Evidence of Magic" and "Incident of Magic" are also amazing. Also, I wouldn't bother reading reviews for Kris Michaels' book - it's a waste of time, when you could be reading her books.

Love the storytelling but...

There are things I loved a lot about this book. The storytelling was compelling. I typically hate books that are told entirely in the past especially when they are released after you’ve read a whole 12-book series and so already know what happens in the end. This is kind of Kings of Guardian prequel taking place mostly in the late 80s/early 90s. It is a page turner and reminded me of everything I love about this author’s compelling romantic suspenses.

This novel tells the story of David Xavier or as he’s better known in the Guardian world Gabriel, the founder and boss of Guardian Security the origins of him becoming the super secret spy black ops warrior person he is with his company and also finding love with zany, outspoken, strong and fiery nurse, Anna, who he meets under the worst circumstances, whilst searching for a serial killer.

My issue with this novel has more to do with the messaging and characterization of the hero, Gabriel. He is everything delightful except for the toxic company he keeps in his best friend McNair! There is no way that someone as intelligent as Gabriel did not know that McNair still had issues with misogyny and violence against women- even the way McNair is presented several times with the way he talks about women in front of Gabriel, the way he insulted and left bruises on Anna... Gabriel knew!!!! And to me, that makes Gabriel as culpable as McNair is! To me, whether or not he got his friend psychological help, he was an enabler to his friend to abuse women even if that may not have been his attention. I also have problems with the way a certain LGBTQ plot angle was explored- I fount it not necessarily the most responsible way to bring in that sort of plot to this story and potentially reinforcing homophobic stereotypes as side effect. This latter issue is a matter of opinion and sensitivity and on the surface is fine but I kind of felt uncomfortable with it. Not as much as I did about the problematic friendship between Gabriel and McNair which turned a 4-4.5star novel to a 2-3-star star one for me.

I still love this author’s writing but for the reasons above, even though I enjoyed the storytelling and the plot and the suspense and think this author is immensely talented, this particular book bothered me and although it was an engrossing read, to me, it was a problematic one.

Kris Michaels is an AMAZING storyteller and her suspense romances are the best im my opinion.
Gabriel’s book was everything and more that I hoped it to be and it’s my new favorite in all of the Guardian books.
So amazingly written.
I loved the era (80’s) the story was written in. That was my era and liked that I could’ve identify with many things.
Let me start with Anna Harriger.. love her so much!! She was dorky, sweet, caring and so strong. She was perfect for Gabriel.
Reading about Gabriel or the mysterious David Xavier was awesome. So protective of Anna. And love reading about the beginning of Guardian.
The storyline and the suspense were amazing and so good.
Usually I don’t like Anthologies, but like always Kris Michaels is amazing in everything she does.
I don’t want this series to EVER end.
If you like Security Suspense Romance or Militarily Romance, then you’ll have to read The Kings of Guardian, Guardian Security Shadow World or The Guardian Defender. They are a must read.

My Rating: 5 STARS!

Gabriel

Funny, but I read the whole series of the "Kings," before Gabriel's beautiful story.
I know this review is backwards, but ..... Oh well ! Gabriel is a beautify written story with characters of grit, determination, loyalty and love. Gabriel and Anna love story shows, for one, and the !most important reason, Gabriel's money did not matter to Anna. She left when threatened, to protect him. That is the true definition of love !

I’ve never known a book that made me feel so much ❤️ ⁣

I’ve loved the Kings of Guardian for so long, every book gets better & better, but just when I think I’ve read THE best one of the series...the next one outdoes it.

Gabriel and Anna is a MUST READ book! ⁣

Gabriel IS Guardian, this is his story, we go back in time to see where it all started, we see the beginning of Gabriel and Anna’s relationship (I loved reading about dial up internet, and the introduction of mobile phones lol I’m showing my age!) what an epic intense journey they have to HEA, it’s certainly a wild ride! This was a rollercoaster of a story, just when I thought the story would wrap up, the author hit us with a twist or turn, it’s not a quick read but I was so wrapped up with the characters and storyline I could happily listened to this audiobook on repeat.

'Whatever it takes, for as long as it takes'

Back to where it all began, a dark, dangerous and heart wrenching story but we would expect nothing else from the Guardians series. Gabriel may be a man of huge power who runs one of the most dangerous companies in the world....but Anna is the strength that allows him to continue day after day and I love that here we see a softer, more human side to Gabriel when he interacts with Anna. We also get to see Guardian Security as we know it today take shape and grow.
This is a great series and whilst the timeline of the books is split across Guardian Defenders and Kings of Guardian they all intertwine and overlap.

Unfortunately, this is likely my first and last Kris Michaels book

The author was confused whether most of her book takes place in the mid 80s or the mid 90s. Motorola didn’t release a flip phone until 1996…definitely NOT mid 80s, even as an alpha or beta model. Achey Breaky Heart was released in 1991…definitely NOT mid 80s. Yet other references clearly confirm that the first part was supposed to have occurred in the 80s (shows that went off air in 1986 or 1989).

If you’re going to make pop culture references, it takes 30 seconds on Google to make sure they’re remotely plausible. The editors/proofreaders let the author down here…it should have been an easy catch. Details like these are an unnecessary distraction from what otherwise should have been a cool and relatively unique storyline for modern romances. Such a bummer.

Also, it’s nada not “nadda.” Also, also…an alpha male “protector” type would never use the modern slang word “spill”…and especially not in 1980. I wish romance authors would more believably write the MMC’s perspective and certainly his dialogue. Many times, it might as well be the FMC thinking or talking.

I then lost all respect for the FMC when she gets snide and outright disrespectful with the security guards and staff who are protecting her friend, who is in grave condition and danger…going so far as to say the cringeworthy “do you know who I am!?” Yet when the rich, hot guy comments on the incident, she’s suddenly just SO understanding of the need for the security she was so offended by just a few minutes earlier. To me, that was pandering and unctuous and made her look like a gold digger. What she really should have done was go back and apologize.

Anyway…I could write more, but overall I like the story idea, but the book didn’t live up to it.

I really enjoyed this book. I like Gabriel and Anna., and the special click between them. It’s really the prequel to the Guardian series. I hope we visit with some of the other characters from this first book later on.

The plot was not engaging enough and the recounting of the beginning of story between Anna and Gabriel did not convince me that he truly loved her here. Anna certainly loved him but he did not showed that he really loved her. For what I saw in the present timeline their love was epic and they truly loved each other. The only reason he got together in this book with Anna is because of Jackie without Jackie he would not bothered to meet Anna who he called his past hook up and he would have got with one of his another woman as a wife. He had no time to spare to seek Anna but he had time to date and have sex with other women. Epic fail.
Gabriel was supposed to be a top alpha but here all I saw was a weak. He wasn't strong enough when confronted with the killer and he was weak dealing with Craig.
Anna was a second best to Jackie the victim and to his best friend Craig McNair. Between the first time and 6 yearsa later when they got together, he just considered her a hot hook up, even if he did not forget her. They tried to see eacher other 2 or 3 times for another hook up but the time wasn't right in 6 years. He could have made time for her if he wanted but I guess she was not important enough to him besides being a good hookup that stayed in his mind. In these 6 years apart it was implied that he saw and dated another women and had sex with. You can see that Anna had feelings for him and was infatuated with him the first time and she certainly pined for him.
They only got together after 6 years because he cared about Jackie the victim and he wanted to protect her and find the serial killer. When Anna and Gabriel got together the second time he told her that what he felt for her wasn't love and simply lust, not even desire and that they needed to explore to a daily basis.
I don't know why she kept silence for all the times that the villain threaten her and hurted her. She wasn't even fearful of him. That one of the times he threaten to break every bone in her body and make her suffer was disgusting and she did not tell to Gabriel? But hein, even if she told him it would change nothing of the outcome. BECAUSE HE DID NOTHING TO PROTECT ANNA FROM CRAIG EVEN KNOWING THAT CRAIGH HATED HER, BRUISED HER AND IN THE PAST TREATED HIS OTHER WOMEN IN THE SAME WAY. HOW HE COULD BE FRIENDS AND CONFIDANT AND TELL ALL HIS SECRETS TO A PSCIOPATH? IT SHOULD WEAKNESS AND POOR JUDGMENT.
He only started really wanting a relationship with the heroine after he glimpsed more of her inner character and goodness. Really? You should care for her without it. When why the Hs always loved the OWs even if they are a gold-digger bitches while the heroines need to be a saint to the Heroes to love them?
His only concern was for securing the protection of Jackie and when he thought that the killer caught Anna, he was not desperate or even concerned for Anna's life, in his thought the killer would need her alive. WTF? It's the way you should feel for somebody that you should care? He almost got killed by the killer because of Jackie he put his line on her but I never saw him doing anything remotely for Anna.
I know that after they caught the killer and they got separated because he had commitments he put people watching and reporting to him, even seeing if she was cheat on him or not. WTF. And he did nothing to protect her from Craig, he knew the vitriolic hate and contempt he had for Anna and did nothing. Oh, after seeing the bruises, calling her slut, tramp, the only thing that he did was warning off and threatened Craig, but it did nothing to stop Craig to go after her. How he can so obstuse in seeing the hate, no he wasn't obtuse he saw but I guess I suppose he did not felt enough for her. Even after she declaring that she loved him the only response was that he thought that he loved her, you can see that he wasn't even sure. What a joke putting a team to watch over Anna, the same people that answered to Craig too and can overruled any command that he gave.
HE FAILED EPICALY. ANOTHER THING THAT I HATED IT WAS THAT CRAIG WAS KILLED IN A MISSION AND NOT BY ANNA'S HAND OR GABRIEL AND I BET THAT GABRIEL FOR ALL THE TIMES THAT HE THREATEN CRAIG HE WOULD HAVE NOT KILLED HIM EVEN IF CRAIG HAVE KILLED ANNA. IN THE END GABRIEL STILL EXCUSED HIS BEHAVIOR BECAUSE HE WAS BLIND THAT CRAIG WAS GAY AND LOVED HIM. WTF. ANNA WASN'T HIS PRIORITY FOR WHAT I CAN SEE.
AND ANOTHER THING THAT I HATED IT'S FOR AFTER HE FOUND OUT THE EXTREMES THAT CRAIG DID ON ANNA AND HE DISAPPEARED HE WASN'T REALLY SURE THAT HE REALLY LOVED HER DESPITE FEELING PAIN FOR 9 MONTHS UNTIL HE FOUND HER AND THE BABY. HE JUST GOT SURE THAT HE LOVED HER AFTER HE SAW HIS DAUGHTER THE FIRST TIME. WTF. I GUESS HE DID NOT LOVE ENOUGH. IF CRAIG HAD KILLED AND BURIED ANNA, GABRIEL WOULD GRIEF FOR A TIME AND LATER FORGOT HER AND STILL HAD A DEEP FRIENDSHIP WITH THE VILLAIN.
They gave their daughters the name of Jackie while the first daught also was named after her father. It should make Jackie his love interest instead of Anna, Anna also loved Jackie as a dear friend.
It took decades and 4 children after for Gabriel to truly love his wife. Sorry I don't care much about Gabriel after reading this book.

I read the many great reviews here, and got this book based on that. But I'm seriously confused, because the book reviewed and the book I just read have some big disconnects.

First, i wasn't sure of the age of the H and h. There were many references to cultural things that were pretty far in the past. Valley Girl references? I grew up in the 60s and 70s, so this made sense to me, but didn't fit with the characters or the time this book was supposedly written. Farrah Fawcett hairstyles? VHS tapes? Many characters without cellphones? There's nothing wrong with this, but it didn't seem to fit with the tone of this story, which tried to appear very modern.

The H...he seemed great. At the same time, he was sort of cardboard. His dialogue was weird. It sat somewhere between British mysteries from the 30s and "upper crust" diction. I started to picture him as a buff David Niven, clutching a sleek pipe and asking for vodka tonics. Not my cup of sexy tea. Sure, I get that he's got more money than Warren Buffet, but his dialogue sounded really off, and made him kind of inaccessible as a love interest. I mean, what is this guy? An international jet setter? A Special Forces dude? A super rich guy ala Bond? Trying to mush all those together did not equal 1 clearly constructed hero.

The h...she seemed far more realistic. But again, I couldn't really get a bead on her age. It's not that the character's age mattered, but it was the disconnects between things she said, the cultural references, and her basic makeup that just didn't go together.

The showstopper for me was the closeted, abusive, alcoholic, murdery best friend of the H. Wow. He was so many stereotypes of actual stereotypes that I couldn't keep up. This character was one of the most offensive ones I've read in recent history. I simply couldn't swallow a closeted gay man who hates his secret love so much that he physically abuses the women who get close to the secret love. What??? And the absolute topper--the h wouldn't reveal this repeated physical abuse to her H? And maybe the final topper--when the H actually sees and hears his closeted best friend saying and doing frankly unforgivable crap to his h, he feels "a serious conversation" is the response? Double wow wow. The H is repeatedly described as a guardian of the down trodden, particularly women, yet he refuses to deal with his closeted best friend, who's a hair away from serial killer status. No. And the seriously weird deathbed/confession scene that's about 3 paragraphs long yet neatly ties up many years of felonious behavior was nowhere close to believable.

There were many things I wanted to love about this book. But the weird cultural positions of the characters, their odd language, and the insane best friend kept me from being able to fall into the story

3.5 Stars, a bit of a disappointment

I’ve read the first three books in the Kings of Guardian series and I’ve enjoyed them. I was introduced to the character of Gabriel in those books, so I was looking forward to reading his story, but I found it a bit of a let-down. First off, I found the character of Anna to be pretty annoying. I also could not believe some of the life-endangering mistakes Gabriel made, considering he’s the head of some major security firm. I also had a hard time reconciling him keeping his “best friend” as not only his second-in-command, but also his friend given what he had done to a woman in Gabriel’s past, especially after he did it to Anna as well. I could not remain in a relationship with someone who was okay keeping an abuser, especially my abuser, close.

I also thought the book was too long. There were two stories, the first being the one I thought the book was about, but the secondary story focusing on Gabriel’s best friend I did not see the purpose of or need for. I did not think the secondary story added anything to the book, in fact it’s where the book really lost me. It made me see Anna as weak and I was just really mad at Gabriel that he kept a really bad person in his life and near the woman he loved

Finally, I know this book was supposed to take place at an earlier time, but I feel the author made Anna seem pretty immature. Having grown up in the 80s I remember the Valley Girl “speak,” I even used it when I was in middle school and high school, but by the time I was in college, and certainly working in my career, I had totally, like, given it up. I feel Anna continuing to use it so frequently, so much so that she made herself cringe when she used it, was annoying and made her seem much younger than I think her character was supposed to be.

I will probably go back to the Kings of Guardian series at some point and finish it up, and I will likely try the next book in the Guardian Defenders series (Gabriel was the first in this series). I was disappointed with this book, but I know I have enjoyed other books by this author.

I have liked Gabriel since he was first introduced in the Kings of Guardian series. I was therefore excited to finally read the story about the man himself. He is an amazing and generous person whose main goal in life is to make the world a better place and to keep people safe.

Anna is a good person as well. Being a nurse can be extremely difficult, but she makes the best of it and tries to make her patients comfortable. She laughs and sings and even becomes friends with many of them.

The chemistry between Gabriel and Anna is hot every time they are together. Neither of them were in a position for a relationship when they first met years earlier, but then meeting again was as if fate wanted them to find each other and become a couple.

Overall, I loved getting the back story for Gabriel and Anna and I plan to continue reading the remainder of this series.

How I wish for...

I am in a difficult place. Aging with health issues myself and caring for my partner as she struggles with her problems. She gets fatigued and that leaves me with time to spare, dark, quiet insomniac nights - so I read.
This book is the 18th book by Kris Michaels that I have read and I have read them in completely the wrong order. Unusual for me.
My OCD does rebel at such wild spontaneity but the point is this -
the books end happily. This is important. This is escapism. A place where the world does not hurt you. Characters appear regularly in the series and you can get to know them. You become invested in them. Friends possibly. Fiction relies on the willing suspension of disbelief and this I now find to be extremely therapeutic.
This book “Gabriel” is in many respects the origin story of Guardian - the company.
It is formulaic, it is adventure and romance, it is not Dickens or Dumas. There is humour, there is sex, there is eyebrow waggling, there is peril and there is grief. This is basically life. This is a story to bring you from darkness to light. It makes me feel better, happier and restores a little bit of faith in a world where justice can win. Thank you Kris Michaels - you are helping me. I am grateful.
Motto to live by -
“Whatever it takes.
As long as it takes.”

I was wondering if I wanted to go back in time....but I'm glad I did.
I've missed Ms Michael's writing and I really enjoyed listening to how the foundations were built.
I simply loved the research put in to ops and logistics and I must say I didn't peg the baddie till it was almost on top of me.
and the SUBLPLOT oh my word it was awesome....your mind Ms Michael's is intricate and wonderful. I've read all of the J's and the Shadows and although I have 2 or 3 exra extra faves....all of them are exceptional...well that's my opinion anyway.
there is that wonderful mixture of family, down time , angst and black ops, gut wrenching emotions, suprise, shock , love, romance and hot steamy scenes.....what more can you want.?
Matt Haynes is the solo narrator but he does a wonderful job. I've listened to him in all the guardian books and he merges his tone and inflections into an easy flow that becomes familiar with each book and individual character.
Maliki has popped up in the J's books and has intimated his story,...so yay...now I get to know.
my little picky bit was the hero not seeing the forest for the trees...(no spoiler) but I broke it down and looked at POV's ...then I realised the feasibility. once again great read and nicely narrated

Gabriel (Guardian Defenders Book 1)

This was a suspenseful and passionate love story with David( Gabriel) finding the love of his life a nurse named Anna. She was fiesty and brought love to his lonely life that he never expected to find. She was someone that loved him and not his money or power. Anna had also found true love in David. They went through several terrible obstacles after their first one night stand and did not see each other for six years. His company Guardian Defenders helped out a case where a serial killer failed to kill one of his victim's six years prior when Gabriel was helping out with the case. Jackie was the victim and Anna was her nurse. This was the start of their love story Anna and Gabriel. Jackie lived and the killer escaped. Six years later Jackie was attacked where she moved to New Orleans and was attacked by the original serial killer. Anna and Gabriel reconnected when she came to take care of Jackie again and he came to help catch the killer again. This suspenseful action packed story picks up again with more obstacles they have to overcome to get their happily ever after. I highly recommend this amazing love story between Anna and Gabriel.

PERFECTION!!!! WONDERFUL BOOK!

What an awesome and satisfying story! It was perfect! I loved every word..... Gabriel and Anna's love story was so beautiful and heartwarming. After reading all of the Guardian series books it was wonderful to get the backstory on the mysterious very powerful man that was featured in all the books as the top man behind everything to do with the Guardian teams and their culture of steadfastness, loyalty and support for each other.
This book was a pleasure from beginning to end.... Once I started it I could not put it down... I am writing this review at 2:30 AM in the morning.😁. There was so much action, suspense, twists and turns and unexpected happenings that I was kept riveted and engrossed throughout the entire story!!! I highly recommend this book and am looking forward very much to the next books in this series...... I can't wait to see what Gabriel and Anna's children get up to and am so glad that the Guardian series seems like it will continue on... I am very fond of all the other characters and it was great to find out how the Kings met Gabriel and the beginnings of the dynasty.

David ‘Gabriel’ Xavier was making his dream of Guardian Security a reality when fate threw a woman’s brutal assault threw him in the path of perky, loving nurse Anna Harriger. Gabriel’s self-assigned chore was to catch the brutal serial killer and; Anna’s to help the patient heal mentally and physically. That doesn’t mean there wasn’t enough energy for mutual attraction!

Their memorable night six years ago kept them alive in their minds until they met again and it seemed as if no time had passed. The assaulted woman had been re-assaulted by the same elusive killer but for whatever reason, Gabriels #2 (best possible nickname for him) hates the mere thought of Anna and does all he can to separate them and chase her off.

Having first read ‘Kings of Guardian’ in its entirety, it was good to see younger Gabriel in action. Brutality against women is here, kudos to the well-fleshed, deliciously vicious toned-down, dedicated villains here. To this reader’s taste, that wasn’t the only highlight, the outing elements all delivered! If Guardian wasn’t already a favorite, it would be!

This book kept me guessing and kept me up late a couple nights reading way past bedtime

I could never figure out why Craig was so mean and angry about Gabriel and Anna being together. With the stress of starting a new company, Gabriel didn't really have time for a relationship, but the first time he met Anna he knew she was something special and wanted to find out what made her that way but it was just the wrong time. Six years later they find each other again and decide to take a chance and see where things go. When Gabriel is shot she decides to stick around and be his home nurse and get to know each other more. Then he is called away on a mission and I thought Craig was going to kill her, but he just severely beat her and threatens her friends and family if she ever sees Gabriel again. So she loses the guys that are following her and goes into hiding to protect herself and unborn child that no one knows about. Will Gabriel be able to find her when he finally gets back? Will he just take the baby like she overheard Craig say? What happens to Craig because Gabriel told him if he ever touched Anna again, he would kill him.

Great book

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I’m hooked. I plan to continue with this series. This book grabbed my attention right from the start and I barely put it down - only for work and dinner. This is well written with very interesting plots. What I like about it most is that although the topic is about a serial killer, this author did a good job not making this dark. The bad guy is around, but not the focal point of the book. Gabriel and Anna are the main characters and they are the main ones throughout the book.

I really liked watching their relationship grow. They had chemistry right from the beginning. And their friendship soon grew with fun banters and hot moments. Gabriel is such a strong, capable alpha. He’s very sweet to Anna. I like how he likes her the way she is and her kind hearted, quirky personality really appealed to him. Lots of action and not too much self reflection, which is the type of books I like to read.

I recommend this book and can now see why there is such high ratings for this.

Gabriel is the first book in the Guardian Defenders series by Kris Michaels. With this series, Ms. Michaels delivers a compelling mix of romantic suspense, tactical action, and emotional storytelling. It’s another spin-off from the Kings of Guardian series, and definitely doesn’t disappoint, retaining the same high-energy pacing and interconnected worldbuilding I have come to expect from Ms. Michaels, while also introducing us to new operatives with their own unique missions and personal challenges.
Each book can be read as a standalone romance that’s wrapped up in a high-stakes operation - but I would be remiss not to mention that together they form a cohesive web of loyalty, trust, and found family.
Once again, Ms. Michaels delivers authentic action sequences grounded in military and covert operations, distinct character voices that make each operative memorable, interconnected relationships that add an extra dynamic to the overall series, and the perfect balance between suspense and romance.
Happy Reading…

I borrowed Gabriel ~ Guardian Defenders ~ Book 1, by Kris Michaels from the Kindle Unlimited Program.

David Xavier, a reclusive billionaire, also known as Grabriel Alexander or Alpha within the Guardian International Security Company leads a dangerous and exiting life with his goal to make the world a better place. With the motto of whatever it takes, for as long as it takes, he sets goals and works hard to achieve them.

He needs and finds a strong woman in Anna Harringer, a nurse with a wonderful sense of humor and outlook on life that Gabriel can't resist. These two do not have an easy path at the beginning of their relationship as he hunts for a killer, runs overseas operations and is expanding his company by searching for good people.

Wonderful book about good people, working hard to reach hard but worthwhile goals and raising a family both theirs and those they care about.

Ever since I started the series months ago I have been wondering about Gabriel and Anna what their story was. Wow, what a story it was. It was filled with jealousy, danger, a serial killer, action, romance, and great storylines. This is what I have come to expect from Ms. Michaels and her Guardian series and spinoffs.

Gabriel leads a double life and he needs a strong, independent woman to stand by him. Anna blew into his life briefly but left an impression and six years later when they had cause to meet again she was no different. Two remarkable characters destined to be together even after being torn apart for his job or from his own best friend.

Ms. Michaels had done it again. Gabriel is incredible as is Anna and their story is nothing short of amazing. I was sucked in from the beginning and the story would let me go until the end. I look forward to more and more Guardians!

Action, Intense, Steamy, Wonderful Characters, Unpredictable, HEA, Page-turner

Gabriel is the first in the Guardian Defenders series. I’ve read many of Kris’ books and Gabriel did not disappoint! I’ve always been intrigued by the man behind the legend of Guardian Security. He’s always been a mysterious character. Now, I feel like I know him and Anna much better. Although, I’m sure there’s always more to know about the illusive David Xavier.

If Gabriel is at the heart of Guardian Security, then Anna is its soul. Because without Anna, I don’t believe that Gabriel would be the man he is today. There were multiple twists, surprises, and the intensity kept me going. This is a story about love, dedication, trust, and loss.

I love the Kings of Guardian; and now, the Guardian Defenders have captured my heart.

Excellent!

I started reading Ms Michaels Guardian books and then discovered “Gabriel.” It was good to go back to the beginning of “Guardian” and read the backstory.

The characters were fairly well developed and story well written. The flow of the story was excellent. Seeing the love grow and develop between Gabriel and Anna was well done.

Ms. Michaels is a talented author keeping the reader engaged. She writes of emotions that we can relate to our own lives. I haven’t always liked some of her characters in each of her stories; however they are what we find in our own lives-the good and the ugly.

Recommend this book and others in the Guardian and Guardian Shadow series!

this was... weird. it had a pretty entertaining story overall, and i enjoyed the characters, but it was set in the weirdest time ive ever read. it had mentions of the god damn AIDS epidemic. it was really strange. like, i think it would've been a lot better if it had just be set in a more modern world. the overall suspense of the killer and the attacks was super cool, but it just felt like it didnt fit with other aspects of the story. that being said, it really wasn't bad. it just wasn't my favourite book, you know? i might even check out other books by the author in the future, because the writing styel was pretty good, but i dont know. we'll see. go check it out if you wont, dont if you dont, you know how this works. love yall.

Intriquing plotline!

A very slow book to read, but often interesting! Anna and Gabriel were an odd match, but made it work! While I didn't see the attraction, they muddled through it!
The Guardian Agency was a vague organization that protected the weak and righted wrongs......I guess, because there was no construct ever offered! Copius threads from that organization were thrown into the storyline with disastrous effect and rediculous angst!
This book was slow and tedious and I had to pour through pages of verbiage, which added nothing to the story! If the author took out all the "detail" about clandestine missions it could have worked! The book is really an interesting romance! The suspense had it's moments!
