Amy J. Murphy is not a Jedi. (Although she’s married to this Scottish guy that claims to be one.) Nor is she a powerful mutant with adamantium claws and super-fast healing, or leader of the human resistance battling to overthrow cyborg overlords.

But, she is a fantastic liar.

She discovered this power at an early age and chose to wield it for good instead of evil (even though the evil part remains highly tempting.) With this power, Amy writes books about space opera featuring kickass heroines. These books are sometimes confused for military science fiction which is an easy mistake to make. She’s ok with this as her debut novel, Allies and Enemies: Fallen, was a finalist for the 2016 Dragon Award for Best Military Science Fiction or Fantasy Novel. At some point, she infiltrated the ranks of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) and refuses to return the cool membership card they sent her when they figured things out.

When not geeking out at science fiction conventions, she’s hunkered down in an isolated farmhouse in the maple syrup guzzling state of Vermont with the aforementioned Scotsman/Jedi and two canines that possess the ability to speak. She gives away free books if you write her a nice message via her website www.amyjmurphy.com.

I read the previous books in the series a while ago, so it took me a bit to remember who some of the characters were. There was a lot going on in this book, it starts some years after the last one, with different characters off doing different things, which I know will all connect together at some point, but they didn’t manage to do that by the end of this book. It felt like the end of an episode, rather than the end of a book, with everyone still up in the air and nothing resolved at all. That didn’t concern me too much, however, since I can go on to read the next book in the series, which will hopefully wrap things up in a satisfactory fashion. I’m off to do that now and looking forward to it.

At the very end of Allies and Enemies: Exiles, the previous book in this exciting sci-fi series, there is some welcome news about Sela Tyron, one of the main characters. A twist I did not see coming had negatively affected this former military officer, but there at the end was a sliver of good news.

Six years later as the fourth book of the series, Allies and Enemies: Legacy opens, Sela appears to be back to her old self, kicking butt and taking names as a bounty hunter (key word being ‘appears’). The war Sela, her husband Jon and his sister Erelah helped start between the three guilds uneasily sharing power in the Reaches, a backwater corner of the galaxy, is long over. But winning a war doesn’t guarantee peace, especially when the ambitious and greedy take up positions of power.

This review is based on an advance copy provided by the author through StoryOrigin for that purpose.

Political intrigue isn’t the only thing for residents of the Reaches to worry about, though. A unique and potentially devastating new threat is introduced to readers in this installment, and I can’t wait to see what happens when this menace is revealed and the lead characters begin dealing with it.

It is typical of this series that this new danger is first revealed through the actions and thoughts of characters who were peripheral in previous books. One of the strengths of this series is the author’s ability to create and develop interesting characters, and I especially enjoy how secondary characters are spun off into independent adventures that circle back around to encompass the main players and become part of the overarching storyline.

Another strength of this series is exciting action sequences, and although Allies and Enemies: Legacy seems to have fewer action scenes and more political intrigue than earlier entries in the series, there are enough to keep readers satisfied. Combine the political maneuvering with the scary new threat, and it feels like the author is setting the stage for some real fireworks. Suffice to say, I’m really looking forward to reading Book 5.

I really need to go back and refresh my memory with this series. This book was quite an enjoyable read but I had trouble remembering everything that occurred in the past books. The story ends on a bit of a cliffhanger but the next in line is out and I’m looking forward to continuing the saga!
